  • In Part 3 of this video series, I'm going to talk about the Body Budgeting system, and how deeply it's tied in with our emotional experiences. We don't have emotions that aren't a direct reflection of our body budgets, and so, it would make sense, I think, if we want to understand ourselves and the emotions we're experiencing, to understand what this body budget is all about, and how it's creating our emotional experiences.
In the next video, I'll be talking about some of the problems that arise with this new understanding of emotions, in connecting with our body budgets, and in paying attention to how our emotions are at the mercy of the state of our bodies. Check it out here!

In the first two parts of the series, I worked on debunking some of the outdated myths and misconceptions about emotion, and laid out the Theory of Constructed Emotion. Check them out here if you missed them:

In Parts 5 and 6, we're going to take all of these ideas about interoception, body budgets, and how emotions are made, and work towards an understanding of how to master our emotions. Those two are going to be the most important parts of the series, I think, and I'm excited to share them with you next week!
If you're into this series so far, and want to get into parts 5 and 6 sooner, please consider joining my Patreon. I'm uploading all of my videos there, ad free, before these videos go live on RUclips, and I'm sharing the scripts there in advance as well, in case you prefer reading to watching.

I'm also inviting you to join the Discord, where we're discussing a lot of these ideas, and more, amongst a group of really cool, smart people, all in the spirit of nonviolence and curiosity.

If you want to read more about the Theory of Constructed Emotion, you'll love the book "How Emotions Are Made" by Lisa Feldman Barrett. It's a beautifully articulate description of emotional construction, and is super thorough, with a bibliography longer than some books. Check it out:

Hey Simon, will you consider uploading these videos as podcasts on Spotify? :D

Yeah! I’m thinking that, once I’m done the series, I’ll splice it together into a big audio file. I’m not sure how that’ll work, since I have a lot of intro, recap, and conclusion in these videos, but maybe there’s a way to make it work? Or would it make sense to upload them as separate files, just as they are in the video? Can podcasts be under 15 minutes long?
