I was six when he died. I wouldn't go on to appreciate and adore AIC until I was 24, when my depression reached an extremely low point. This song- really the entire JOF EP- spoke to me. Dirt did too. Of course I listened to Mad Season as well. These lyrics gave me so much comfort. My family found out around this time, my older brother was an addict. Once again, I turned to this band and Layne's voice for comfort. Luckily, my brother is on the road to getting clean and sober. I think he just made it into a year sober, If my memory is right. I'm in better headspace too. But I'll never forget this was one of the two artists that got me through an extremely tough part of my life. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. Stay safe and alive out there, friend. Be kind to yourself.
I also was 6 when Layne passed away. I discovered this band way too late and yet they quickly became my favorite ever💗 Their music is just so unique and beautiful. Even if im not an addict or depressed person I can still enjoy the melodies and gorgeous singing 👌
AIC's most underrated song. Imagine "I Stay Away," "Rotten Apple," and "Don't Follow" on Unplugged. Time constraints from MTV executives limited the amount of songs AIC could perform, but fuck that. The musicians know more than the MTV executives. MTV should have allowed AIC to perform these songs to release them on anniversary/bonus feature releases. "Angry Chair" almost was not performed due to time constraints. Thank God AIC fought for that. "Nutshell" thankfully was played and is still my favorite on Uplugged (better than the studio version) followed by "Down In a Hole" and "Would?."
No fue extra! Faltaba un aparte más,... Jerry se confundió y el batero lo siguió y el pobre Layne tuvo que seguir cantando el estribillo, por eso se da vuelta y los mira...
I just LOVE how Layne sings the chorus at 4:17... The Jar of Flies version is more solid, while the live version sounds like a jam. I think this song, especially the one played in this show, is one of the best AIC moments of ALL their career... Even with the little mistake at 1:44 haha. So powerful, so emotional. I just wonder why they didn't played it at the Unplugged.
Could be... Rotten Apple's like a hidden gem... Althought for me it's in my top 5 AIC songs, there's plenty of people that never heard of it. Cheers from Brazil.
I once had this dream where I was driving through a foreign city at night. It felt so eerie yet I knew I was safe because Layne was in the car with me, and he was singing this song. The car’s stereo was playing the instrumental part, but it didn’t sound like the studio version. This is the closest I’ll get to hearing it while I’m awake. R.I.P. Layne and Mike.
@@TheStepmonkey I was standing near the stage and he was definitely out of his mind. His behavior clearly showed it. I remember it very well. He finished a bottle of alcohol in the beginning and threw it in the audience. Accidentally hitting a woman on the head who got quite injured..So, he was either drunk, high or both..The injured fan didn’t file any charges against the band to my knowledge. And nevertheless, he and the band played very well.
I love that this video surfaced and I love that there’s footage of him singing one of the most beautiful songs ever!! Love ROTTEN APPLE. Layne is truly one of a kind will always be missed. 🤍
This is my favorite live version of the song. The one filmed in the Netherlands was played like the performance on Jar of Flies. This show as a whole was great. Laynes is obviously very high but still puts on a great show.
@@billybob6845 It's not low at all, it's reality. Watch the whole Rotterdam show, or even just they playing What The Hell Have I. It's obvious he's high.
well for now on when ever I hear someone yaking about the Netherlands I'm gonna think hey that's 1 of the 2 only places where they actually have a recording of Layne singing this beautiful song.
.not sure way its wasn't done at unplugged but I'm taking a guess that it was too on point. Layne is broken he appeared to have difficulty putting himself up straight on a stool. Rotten is a fall from grace I doubt layne wanted to be reminded of that and neither did jerry. Rotten is such a calling card to the devastation laynes life had become. I cant listen to ritten without crying its too symbolically relevant and layne sung that with such brutal honesty that it really hit home for me. Miss him so much everyday... always💔
@@_c3a3m_88 i see what you mean, it's just an example how raw his performance was though and kinda showing everyone that life he sings about is no lie.
Lane being high didn't help, but you can tell this is probably the first time they'd played this since they recorded it a month earlier...He couldn't remember any of the lyrics. I feel bad for Layne, but honestly I feel worse for Jerry and the rest of the guys. They had to watch him slowly self destruct.
Right Coast they opened with it when I saw them on 9/25/93 at the Aragon in Chicago. They played the whole thing behind the big white sheet in front of the stage. You could only see their silhouettes and layne was wearing a huge witch hat. After Rotten Apple the white sheet dropped and they slammed into Them Bones. Incredible performance
To be fair, I play this on accoustic here n there and every single time I never remember every line and lyric. The way the lyrics are make it very hard to remember imo
ruclips.net/video/bx_zEDR4xa8/видео.html 5:40 For anyone looking for an “unplugged” version of this, here. Unfortunately fragments of a sound check may be as close as we get for now. I have yet to find an actual concert version, hopefully it exists out there somewhere, but I’m not sure as of now. If it does, please share!
If you watch the video of the whole concert you can see that Layne was in a TERRIBLE state. Completely erratic and messing up a bunch of songs. I think the solo that Jerry did at the end was kind of for himself, I can only imagine how hard it was getting through that show, seeing Layne in the state that he was and not being able to do anything about it. It’s pretty heartbreaking.
fucking amazing... i hate to say it but this was my dope song... everytime I made it past the hardest day 5... and made it through the hard part... and there I was with a bun in my hand... crawling back to start..... =/

I love this song, love AIC, & totally love Laynes voice, but he kinda butchered the lyrics! But it's still awesome....I'm guessing he was mind altered at the time. No one can mess up this good!!
Is Layne high at this concert? He doesn’t seem to be connected to the audience. Honestly if I saw this performance live I would wonder if he were bored or high. This isn’t his greatest. He isn’t hitting his high notes. Hmm

You were born in ‘96 like me
Layne always looked over at Jerry when he fucked up on a song. 1:47 case in point. You'll find this throughout his career.
As every creative partners must had their own rapport, i notice that as well. Sadly that kinship was severily affected later.
Jerry was/is defacto leader.
jerry was always the leader. he always was the composer and lyricist, layne was only the singer but the soul of the band

Layne was, is, and forever will be the incarnation of perfection.
Well said, best singer in rock history 💗
So sad how most songs off the two "mellow" EPs were never performed live often. This was incredible.
Don Gato honestly this song is the most underrated song on the EP
@@josecano9210 this is definitely one of the best but I’d say the most underrated is don’t follow
Yep. Had Layne made it through, they would have not only played the EP songs live, they would’ve continued writing songs like these.

I was there! Layne was high as a kite and certainly not at his finest that night but it was still a good concert in my opinion.

This could have been one of their greatest live songs. That last chorus was nails.
