I am staggered how Richter can take even a comparatively simple, uncomplicated sonata like this and make us hear it with new ears yet without gimmickry, affectation or excessive individualism,. Wonderful.
Not only this sonata. I think Richter never gets the right tempo. He is either too slow or too fast, but never right. (You can read what Rubinstein said about his tempi in Beethoven Sonata). I believe, though, he is right in russian music.
This piece has no tempo or dynamic markings at the beginning, there is no 'should'. Personally, I think everyone starts this piece too quickly and I love how he opens slowly.
It's marked ANDANTE and there is nothing in the character of this music that exudes urgency. It's a very introspective piece that is best served without exaggerated pathos etc. as played by Richter here and Gilels, Backhaus, Schnabel, Gulda etc. to mention several of the greatest Beethoven interpreters.
That's okay - there isn't one interpretation to suit all sensibilities, not to mention the different periods in one's life which bring about change and morphing tastes. After hearing this hundreds of times since my youth I especially enjoy this quiet, simple (but soulful) version. I just don't hear this music as being energetic...at least not the first movement andante...Also, please note that it wasn't composed at the time of the explosive Waldstein Sonata (although the opus number 49 would lead one to believe the contrary), it was composed much earlier.

richter's playing of this sonata made me love classical music...
Все гениальное- все просто
Очень важно передать характер и Рихтер это смог
He is amazing.
This sonata is probably the simplest to play among all Beethoven's sonatas, technically speaking.
But it requires talent to play it with this climate.
Outstanding rendition and interpretation ~
Bellissimo
He really nails this sonata.
This verb "nail" doesn´t fit for this kind of playing this Beethoven.
Andante 0:00
Allegro 5:29
粗布来了
This sonata isi andante, and he play very slow

Hardly you´ll find a Richter interpretation without any deep sense, even not in this "sonata facile" of L.v.B.
He got it wrong. The very first few bars should give a sense of urgency-urgency to tell his passion for love

I can't get into this Andante mood. Get less energy(tiring) after listening . not my idea of enjoying music.

I would agree..
