A very difficult piece, both technically and musically. Even 5he master did not play it cleanly. Oh well, neither did I! Screw it!

Excellent but, actually, square. I like more risk and testosterone. Richter is fine, but always a bit "cool". 🥶

Two performances of this make me cry. Always by Russians. Richter and Lugansky.

This is so much slower than his other more viewed performances. There's a better (more clearly audible) sense of the rhythm. Richter is one of the best interpreters of Rachmaninoff, as far as sticking to the sheet music, and able to telegraph emotion and the atmosphere of what he plays in the same category as Vladimir Horowitz, in my view.

This sonata is probably the simplest to play among all Beethoven's sonatas, technically speaking. But it requires talent to play it with this climate.

Not only this sonata. I think Richter never gets the right tempo. He is either too slow or too fast, but never right. (You can read what Rubinstein said about his tempi in Beethoven Sonata). I believe, though, he is right in russian music.

Hardly you´ll find a Richter interpretation without any deep sense, even not in this "sonata facile" of L.v.B.

The subtle direction of the profound piece is NW; this is also this aeon the subtle direction of Germanic Patriarchal Attribution... to say Northwest Wind is a sort of Expression in Paganism or Animism... Straif is the ogham, of course, most representative of this work; Our Best patriarchal direction to have is that of Scottish Celtic, NNE- the Anglican or English, Dutch and Finnish such attributions were removed from the aerth, long ago. The Patriarchal Direction of this country, using the Illusory Names America and U.S.A., has generally been the worst of the 32 such, called Penalty and Atavism. The Slavic or Balto-Slavic such attribution has not been removed from the aerth. This land is best and veraciously called Nova Scotia, or Alba Nuadh- no joke, using the English language is one of the worst; Scottish Gaelic, the top best; German and Irish Gaelic, possibly but less probably as good. Fast so gut, Deutsch und ihre Richtung! A condition called Jecethmeqeswyeq means very incredibly low energy, the "blahs", etc.; is the result of such patriarchal Dyssync. Thejerexzen or Shifting Yoga is the top best indication; Shifting to the Celtic Patriarchal Direction; the National Direction to West, same as subtle Germany, France and many other coutries. Official changes of country's Name and language would be very incredibly good. There can't be a country Britain, as it was removed from the sublimte 13 Hierarchical ones, was replaced by Scotland. The work can also be attributed with Saga...

I’ve listened to over twenty other performances of this prelude, from piano rolls of Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff himself up through Lang Lang and everyone in between, even obscure performances by people like Alicia de Larrocha, and chasing down leads (you must hear Cziffra!” “Moisewitsch!”) but the best performance, definitively, is this one. If I had the chops and had the ability to study this piece with any of the pianists I’ve heard play it, I’d choose Richter, hands down.

Listened to quite a few "renditions" prior to Richter's. The difference (big difference) is that R.'s the only pianist who's completely in control throughout. He knows where he's headed, always. With "the others" it's pretty much about "How can I get through this thing."

Richter is astonishing. For those of us who have tried to play this... I desperately want to see his hands on the keyboard. How does he make this sound like this? I'm assuming it's not a magical piano that has six strings under each hammer or something. I struggle to get the volume correct with clean, crisp clarity.

I heard him live during his American tour in the mid-1960s. His demeanor was very modest, not showy at all,, yet his presence and his sound were enormous. It was a breathtaking experience.

It’s the sheer volume of sound that Richter can create that separates this performance from every other (in that he could achieve this with a truly unique ability). This piece can be so ‘block chordal’ that lesser pianists descend into pure bashing to create what they perceive as the desired fortissimo effect. From 01:47 (a bit before the central passage starts) one can hear the exquisite balance and evenness on these bass octaves in the left hand. Richter never loses the roundness of sound and so the tolling sonority has a truly massive legato effect that carries the listener without knocking him/her unconscious at the beginning of every bar. His fortissimi are nuanced and graded so there is always progression and a sense of emotional travel in the phrasing, regardless of whether he is at the very depth of the piano’s register.
