It’s the sheer volume of sound that Richter can create that separates this performance from every other (in that he could achieve this with a truly unique ability). This piece can be so ‘block chordal’ that lesser pianists descend into pure bashing to create what they perceive as the desired fortissimo effect. From 01:47 (a bit before the central passage starts) one can hear the exquisite balance and evenness on these bass octaves in the left hand. Richter never loses the roundness of sound and so the tolling sonority has a truly massive legato effect that carries the listener without knocking him/her unconscious at the beginning of every bar. His fortissimi are nuanced and graded so there is always progression and a sense of emotional travel in the phrasing, regardless of whether he is at the very depth of the piano’s register.
Very insightful commentary! You must know your way around the keyboard pretty well yourself! Thanks so much for enriching my understanding of Richter's incomparable artistry.

Richter is on another level here, perhaps even beyond what the great composer himself could have delivered. This Alto/Regis cd -- unbelievably available at budget price -- is a lasting testament to Richter's incomparable pianism. Thanks for posting.
Richter is astonishing. For those of us who have tried to play this... I desperately want to see his hands on the keyboard. How does he make this sound like this? I'm assuming it's not a magical piano that has six strings under each hammer or something. I struggle to get the volume correct with clean, crisp clarity.
I heard him live during his American tour in the mid-1960s. His demeanor was very modest, not showy at all,, yet his presence and his sound were enormous. It was a breathtaking experience.
I don't really care for Rachmaninov, but this piece of music has always haunted me ever since I heard it years ago. It still enters my head out of nowhere every couple of months.
I'd put this recording up against anything in the entire history of music. I genuinely believe it could be the greatest combination of composition + interpretation that humanity has ever produced.
Could be sounds from moving una corda and sustain pedals. Acoustic pianos can sound like this when changing pedals. You can hear this same phenomenon at the beginning of Pathetique. ruclips.net/video/M_124D_7KoU/видео.html

This is it...I have found it. I know already that there are none better than this. Richter, dear amazing Richter....
Yes,dear ,beloved Richter and Rachmaninoff...
No words can describe this performance. This is beyond piano and beyond music.
This interpretation puts me in another state of mind... absolutely stunning! Bravo!

Very well said!
This is exactly what I always wanted to say.. but you just put the reality in words so clearly !

Only true painters can achieve this musical beauty, depth and story-telling. Thank you universe for these 2.
Indeed the finest playing and interpretation. Never heavy, always mindful and so soo musical. Thanks for posting this.
no words can describe the magical beauty of this composition nor the magnificence of this interpretation by the great richter
As if you can hear the soul of Rachmaninov speaking. Thank you so much, Sviatoslav Richter.
7 years ago your wrote this. 7 years later it is just as true for another soul. God, the greatness that is expressed here.

Pianist Benno Moiseiwitsch (a very close friend of Rachmaninov) told this prelude was Rachmaninov's prefered one.
no words to describe the power in this Prelude. so beautiful - especialy in Richter's hands!
Magnificent! Definitive.
Nobody does it better sviatoslav my piano hero since 1972
Mine too.
this is my favorite interpretation
Outstanding!

This is my favorite piano piece. Richter plays it the best.
The GOAT.

So beautiful, deep, and transcendental... Pure and timeless... An amazing rendition!!
Amazing ..... Awesome .....thanks you Master Richter ......
I don't really care for Rachmaninov, but this piece of music has always haunted me ever since I heard it years ago. It still enters my head out of nowhere every couple of months.
@-insert forgettable name- Bach is overrated as a musician due to how intensely influential he was.
@-insert forgettable name- just not my thing. Nothing wrong with his abiliies
Rachmaninov is so deep . There is no right or wrong here , just our personal feeling . Art is no quantified .
I performed this prelude in church when I was 17 years old.
when were you born ? Maybe you are a reincarnation of Rachmaninoff ?
Two performances of this make me cry. Always by Russians. Richter and Lugansky.
I'd put this recording up against anything in the entire history of music. I genuinely believe it could be the greatest combination of composition + interpretation that humanity has ever produced.
Thank you , amazing ! Any information about chronology of this masterpiece? When and where it was created ?
03:18
3:28
The climax is exactly half way through.
And no one else needs to play this.
Ah, but there is room in my heart to love Alexis Weissenberg’s version....
Anyone else notice the cut from 4:18 to 4:33? the mics sound as though they have been moved. 4:33 merges back to the original very sloppily, too.

I'm with you, the change in sound quality and panning is quite jarring.
yes. I've noticed that too. I've heard the piece so many times.. I always felt someone merged 2 recordings?
@@utki17 I suspect it's a merge. My guess is that he was really happy with the take but there was a problem with that little section so something got redone.
You can hear similar cuts in some of his other prelude recordings (e.g. Op 23 No 7) where the panning suddenly becomes narrower or wider
