2nd Question, when filming basketball, do you zoom out when the ball is shot, or follow the ball at the same focal length? I've been struggling with this a bit.
i'm shooting a 2-day tournament in a couple weeks that my dad put together. i've and made a highlight video for him in the past, but of course, i want to make it better this time around. so here i am checkin' out your video. i'm planning on 1 cam handheld/monopod switching between 2 lenses (28-75 & 70-180), and cam 2 dedicated to gimbal work, planning on mounting a gopro behind the backboard, too.
@@petersarellas i'm definitely looking forward to it. the challenge is going to be trying to balance out the highlights that the players want to see vs. the creative or (dare i say) "cinematic" way to show the tournament.
Sometimes it is a team of people but there is definitely a trend (possibly fuelled by capacity limits and Covid restrictions?) towards smaller content teams and the need for immediate content is greater than ever so those in-game edits help get the job done efficiently!
Im shooting my daughter's club soccer games and Im using the Sony A74 with the 70-200mm 2.8 II or the 100-400mm 4-5.6 What is the best frame-rate to shoot the video in and is it best to stay on a good tripod a distance from the field?
I’ll usually shoot most of everything in 60fps with key moments in 120fps, and for soccer yes I’d recommend a tripod or hi-hat in a fixed position as it’s basically impossible to move with the continuous play
Video looks so good dude! What settings are the camera on when filming? 4k 24fps? What aperture do you normally run and shutter speed? At 6:00 - 6:10 there's clips which are slow motion but then look like they're shot at 24fps also, what's the sequence settings for that?
Hey Manveer, thanks for checking out the content. I usually shoot 1080p120 at f4 with 1/400 aperture and edit on a timeline at 23.976fps. I’ve got a video way back on this channel going over my gear and settings so you may want to check that one out if you want more details.
Appreciate that! When you add the lumetri colour effect in premiere go to the creative tab and in the “looks” drop down menu select browse and then choose the LUT you want to apply. I’d recommend applying this effect to an adjustment layer and then dragging that adjustment layer over all clips that you want to apply the LUT to.
Great video you make it look easy. Are you shooting in 1080? Would you make an IG reels of this game? If so how would cropping in effect the image of the reel. Last question do you record the WHOLE game waiting for something to happen?
I filmed this game all in 1080p120 and then scales up the 1920x1080 image to fill a 1080x1920 composition (9:16 aspect ratio so 178% scale) when posting Reels on Instagram. Instagram compresses everything pretty heavily anyways so as long as my composition is good and I’m doing what I can to preserve image quality throughout the exporting and uploading process I don’t worry about it. I record the game in short clips and after I film a clip with either write down a quick note about it with the file number for referencing later or will delete the clip if I didn’t get any good shots and nothing notable happened. I usually stop filming at every made basket or dead ball unless the play is moving quickly.
Yes sir always. Is it easier to follow the ball in the air, if you shoot sitting down? That’s my biggest struggle. You should do a video on that lol. I could use it
@@hotballsportshighlights honestly i dont find it easier one way vs the other, its really all about practice and getting used to the flow of the game to the point that following the ball and capturing key moments is second nature
Love the video! Any insights on your philosophies on zooming. I see you zoom in and out quiet a bit while shooting. Wondering if you have anything you tend to try and do.
I usually am quite liberal with zooming in and out to frame a shot, and will often zoom while panning with a subject so that I can almost “edit” a shot in-camera by transitioning my framing from a wide to a close-up or vice versa to keep focus on the subject. Sometimes I’ll often zoom in or out quite aggressively then use the motion blur created by these zooms later when editing to create in-camera zoom or whip pan transitions that help my edit flow together more smoothly.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Full frame lenses (will be written as “Sony-EF” lenses) will work on full frame cameras like the A7iii as well as crop sensor cameras like the a6500. Crop sensor lenses (written as “Sony-E”) will work perfectly on crop sensor cameras like the a6500, but to use them on full frame cameras like the A7iii without getting a harsh black vignette on the outside of your image you will have to crop into Super 35mm/APS-C mode.
Hello. I am a sports videographer. I shoot for a local high school and the gym’s lighting is bad. The videos end up having a purple look in it that I hate. Any suggestions for me?
For me I like to not have a whole bunch of random projects on a card and would rather that file C0001 is the first file of the shoot that day so that’s why I format, but if you have enough space on your card for what you want to film then it isn’t mandatory
Thank you for sharing your process. When you say you pop out the SD card, do you replace it with another incase you have to get another shot while editing?
Nice, that's seriously a lot of work to do during a game. Do you ever work with a crew large enough that you don't have to be on the computer and filming at the same time?
Having a dedicated editor and shooter working in tandem would be nice but typically it’s myself solo or with one other person, and I’d prefer to get two angles of the game and have to deal with in-game edits than sacrifice potential footage. If I could get a team of 3+ then having a dedicated editor would definitely be good.
Hey I just got the 70-200 and I’m kinda shaky, are u using something to help stabilize the camera? Your videos are actually so great btw thank u and keep it up!
I’m just pulling the camera strap against my neck and keeping a knee on the ground or standing to stabilize. I also have my camera built out with a cage so that extra weight helps a bit too. Glad you’re enjoying the videos!
There are a lot of things that go into it. Practice, having 3 points of contact (2 arms and neck strap as suggested). If you shoot Sony like Peter and have ibis that definitely helps. A cage setup that is ergonomic will help etc
You didn't talk about any certain settings, ISO, f-stops, fps, manual or automatic settings that you use, Go in depth with the LUTS and why you pick those particular LUTS, or even what makes a certain shot cinematic. Those details are extremely useful, and you didn't even mention them.
Hi Jada, I have many videos on my channel going over all of the topics that you’ve mentioned and have answered many questions relating to those in the comments sections of my videos. I’d recommend checking out my videos on “best frame rate and shutter speed for sports videos”, “my camera gear and settings”, and the colour grading tutorial where I talk about my LUTs in more detail to begin with. I hope these help answer your questions.
Holy.. You are inspirational! I aspire to be like you one day. I just have one question.. Do you prefer Auto Focus or Manual? I don’t know how your A7iii doesn’t try to auto focus on a different subject Lol It’s kinda frustrating. Good job on the vid!
Man that’s so cool to hear I appreciate it 🙏🏼 I use autofocus almost 100% of the time. Usually I do continuous AF with focus area set to zone, and if I find that is giving me issues I’ll change the focus area to centre and frame the subject accordingly.
