Mark Ruffalo deserved the Oscar for Poor things no doubt. But the performance I loved him the most for is the desperate father he played in Reservation Road. That role deserved the Oscar without questions.
The thing about Mark Ruffalo is that, as someone else said, most of his performances are about 'normal people' dealing with 'normal problems'. So, he will rarely will get over the top or full method acting. But I think, despite having 4 oscar nods, we have definitely taken his talents for granted. He reminds me a bit of actors like Ethan Hawke or Catherine Keener (two of my favorite actors working today, btw). They rarely go with the 'hero role' (well, Mark plays the Hulk, but that's the exception) or the big bravado performance. Instead, they show us how complex the human being can be with minimalism acting.
Can you do a video about Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the elusive oscar? I mean, he's been on the business since before he was even ten and has gone through different stages in his career: a child star, a teen idol, an indie darling, a blockbuster leading man, a writer/producer of its own projects and nowadays a bit o a character actor. He has done a bit of everything, from comedy to drama and action. He's worked with some of the biggest names in the industry (Spielberg, Nolan, etc...) and has given us some really wonderful performances (at least, most of the time). I think most of us thought during the 2010s (when he was on his peak) that he sooner rather than later we would get an oscar nod. Sadly, that hasn't been the case yet. And even though he hasn't been as active as before (I think partly is because he has been more focused on his family), I would love to see him oscar nominated one year. He's 43 after all.
Thanks, Brian, for another excellent video. I so wanted Mark to win for "Spotlight." He also did very well in "Dark Waters." I don't know why that movie "crashed and burned." It was well done and based on a true story. Go figure!
Tbh rewatch all performances by supporting actor last year i feel like Mark Ruffalo by far is the best performance of that year.. and this year i feel like same thing will happen to Felicity Jones in best supporting actress category
I love "Spotlight." It's one of my favorite films. That's my most loved performance from Mark too. He burns with such focused energy as Mike Rezendes. I didn't think he could beat the great Mark Rylance, but I did hold out some hope. I love Mark in everything, but I'm with Brian - he was a scream in "Poor Things," a real revelation. I hope he'll get another role that rich that might bring him to the top at last.
Amazing video, Brian! Always loved him as both an actor and a person. Always delivering solid work, I loved him in Poor Things and he would have been way more deserving than the mid RDJ in Oppenheimer. Also think his work in Spotlight would have been a better win than Rylance in Bridge Of Spies. I see him having go to a traditional biopic format for the Oscar win. Thanks for yet another rewatchable video ❤
His first Oscar nomination definitely should have been for Best Supporting Actor in Zodiac. Despite that film having a star studded ensemble cast, his performance stood out as so weathered, passionate and genuine. I still would have given the win that year to Bardem, but it baffles me how he, and the film in general, wasn't recognized at the Oscars.
Man that first nomination fight are all films and performances I love so much. It took me a little while to warm up to Mark, it was A Normal Heart that won me over and I've been a huge fan for years now and hope he gets his Oscar soon.
Since you’ve made a video on Kristen Stewart and the elusive oscar, could you do one on his former ‘Twilight’ co-star Robert Pattinson? After all the tremendous effort he’s made to branch out of the franchise and all the wonderful and diversive performances he’s been giving us (I honestly haven’t seen him play the same character not even twice) I think he deserves it.
I REALLY loved Mark in the independent film 'My Life Without Me.' It's a REALLY small film, though he has a big part in it. Great little gem...🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😍😍😍.
He is so amazing in so many roles. I feel he should have gotten a nomination for Zodiac. Then Spotlight is one of my favorite performances ever. His performance as an obsessed journalist and Jake Gyllenhaal's as an obsessed detective in Prisoners are 2 of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen. I do not mean they're both obsessed with their current cases just their jobs and work they do in general.
This guys had one heck of a career thus far. One of his best and never spoken about is the movie Infinitely Polar Bear where he plays a dad with bipolar opposite Zoe Saldana.
I’ll have to watch Poor Things bc I can’t comprehend the thought of Mark Ruffalo doing something “dazzling” - every performance I’ve seen of his has been exactly the same
He’s absolutely fantastic in it. Even just the silent clips here were making me crack up as I remembered him in those scenes and pictured his voice. I’m going to have to rewatch it.
Think Ruffalo should have gotten the nomination (and being competitive) for You Can’t Count on Me or Margaret. And I think he should’ve put some pressure on Christian Bale with The Kids Are Alright; that would have been a great Oscar win
Those are two of my favorite performances from Mark. He really stood out for me from the beginning with "You Can Count on Me." Already such a layered performance in this very early role.
Remember how Mark Ruffalo thought he was going to win for Spotlight when Patricia Arquette announced the other Mark with the letter "R" as the first letter in his last name as the actual winner 😂😂😂
that was Sweet. His Best performance for me was his first YOU CAN COUNT ON ME.He got left out because he was such a fresh face on the scene, wasn't a teenager or deaf or some old acting teacher....I don't think the Academy trusted him yet.Although I do love themoment in FOXCATCHER where Tatum brings up his Daddy Carrell to say hello and Fuffalo plays with with kids instead of jumping up and greeting his (brothers) majesty, cokehead Carrell's character. Behavior tells you more about a characters priorities than anything amount of dialogue. I thought that film was Terrific.
Surely Amy Adams will be the topic of a future episode of this series, yes? Glenn Close and Annette Bening, sure, but Amy Adams seems ready and current for this series
The only person who I think was worthy to beat RDJ in supporting actor was Robert DeNiro for Killers of the flower moon. Though RDJ was still my choice
To be honest, I’m fine with Mark Ruffalo not having an Oscar. He’s a good actor and I like him, especially in films like Zodiac, but I don’t think in fifty years time I’d be like: “Y’know who should’ve won an Oscar, but didn’t? Mark Ruffalo.” Especially when several of the greatest never won, like Peter O’Toole. And I really do think Downey deserved it for Oppenheimer, not only is Oppenheimer a fantastic film, but so is his performance in it, there’s a lot of inferiority to his character and he has a very great script to work off of.
Much as I love Mark Ruffalo gotta disagree about RDJr,'s win for Oppenheimer. I walked out of the theater predicting Best Pictture, Director, Best Supporting Actor wins.

People take him for granted. He’s a good hand, as my dad would say. He’s reliable, but he’s never the showstopper.
Yeah he needs that one role where he just brings the house down.
Poor Things is Mark's best Oscar nomination. Ironically, he almost didn't make the cut.
The editing in this video is incredible.

I second this!

If you think about it, he plays Bruce Banner who is just an ordinary guy, though his “problem” is not so ordinary.
His best role was on HBO’s I Know This Much is True.
He really should have Won for Poor Things.

Very engaging case study, I'm going to have to give this video here FIVE MARK RUFFALOS!
Mark Ruffalo is one of my favorite actors. Especially in The Normal Heart and Spotlight.

He has contrary views on Palestine so he will not win.

Amazingly edited video! Thank you 👏🏻
I love Mark Ruffalo he’s one of my favorite actors, I loved him since 13 going on 30
I fell in love with him in 13 Going on 30. But fell in lust with him in Collateral.
I think he is Male Glenn Close , When they give a powerful performance then their fellow nominees also very very competitive 💔 poor thing 😢
I think Peter O Toole was the male Glenn Close. It still baffles me how he never won a competitive Oscar.
Glenn Close is far better than Mark.
I REALLY loved Mark in the independent film 'My Life Without Me.'
It's a REALLY small film, though he has a big part in it.
Great little gem...🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😍😍😍.
I’ve been hooked on Ruffalo since Collateral. That slick back with the cigs, yeah that did it for me

I just watched You Can Count on Me last night, he was amazing in that. Linney deservedly got the Oscar nom but Ruffalo probably should have as well
Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Ed Harris - what else is new?
Left out the persistent detective he portrayed in Collateral with Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx

" quirky men" so well.

Me too. It was funny and so very real. Mark shone in it too. ❤
To me, RDJ was the Ultimate Supporting Actor winner of last year, his character felt like a person who could exist in real life!!
I felt like he was acting like himself.
🤔
Since when does RDJ not play an egotistical narcissist? He shouldn’t have won the Oscar.

Yes. One of my favorites in Mark's career.

I hope he continues to do great work but hopefully more lead roles
He deserved it for Poor Things. RDJ was good, but Ruffalo’s performance was miles better.
Mark Ruffalo should've won best supporting actor for Poor Things
