With both Ali and Waltz, I think you need to forget the fact that they had previously won an Oscar. It should not be an issue whatsoever. It’s always been contentious giving someone a ‘career Oscar’ and I think it the same should apply with someone who has previously won, it should be awarded to the best performance irrespective of previous awards or non-awards.

He literally has said countless times. Blanchett may have 2 Oscars and may have given the better performance, but this was Yeohs moment. I'm like you argue Oscars should celebrate the best of merit, but than pick and choose which narratives piss you off or not. If you're biased and like a narrative, sure. Just be consistent

    • @rebekahp4083

I think the problem with Ali and Waltz’s second wins is that the second performances are both for roles that are not nearly as strong as their previous wins in the not so distant past. It’s not so much that they’re previous winners, it’s more that they had demonstrated much stronger work very recently.

Not only do I think Stallone gave a better performance than Mark Rylance, but I don't think that the Rylance win aged well. • @heymistercarter.
    @heymistercarter. 25 дней назад +12

I think what happened with Waltz for Django Unchained is that the majority of the race that year seemed to be between PSH in The Master, Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook, and Alan Arkin for ARGO. There was no real major contender that was sweeping the season that year, so there may have been a divide in votes between those three. And maybe because of that divide, Waltz was able to sneak in and take it. I think, looking back on it now, we can all agree that PSH had the better overall performance and was more deserving of the win, but hindsight is 20/20.
Though honestly, Samuel L. Jackson getting in and winning for Django Unchained would’ve been fitting too, since he controversially lost Best Supporting Actor for Pulp Fiction (another Tarantino film), and this could’ve been a way to make up for that.

I would call Christopher Waltz supporting. He is assisting Django in his story. Django unchained is about a man trying to free his wife, Christopher Waltz is assisting in that. He is also not there for the final half of the third act. He seems lead because he is quit the talker especially compared to Jaime Foxx's more subtle performance and because of the big moment he had at the end of his arc. I do agree with you that Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson give amazing performances and either one of them would have been a more satisfying win. My pick would be Samuel L Jackson

It's not one of Spielberg's masterpieces but it's still a fine watch. Sure Stallone had a narrative but he actually had some baggage with him while Rylance was a very respected dramatic actor both on screen and stage plus he was always very kind and humble. Also I'm happy that the late great Christopher Plummer won an Oscar. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is very rewatchable in so many ways, Brad Pitt was excellent and so were the ensemble. Tarantino really crafted an exquisite masterpiece in that one.

All of his gestures, micro expression and the subtlety of his acting as Cliff Booth are worth winning an Oscar. Although I seemed to disagree with the assumption of Pitt's role could be co-lead. Cliff Booth is definitely a supporting actor, not because of his screen time but because he was meant to compliment Rick Dalton.

I have to disagree with you about Rylance. He was brilliantly nuanced in Bridge of Spies, playing a Russian spy (or at least a man accused of being one) and doing it in such a way that does not give him away at least until the end. Everyone in the movie hates him, including all the extras, except Tom Hanks, and yet they respect him. He needed to be a particular kind of convincing to pull all that off. I don't know how other actors would've interpreted the role. The movie is not Spielberg's best, but still worth a rewatch, if only for the acting from the likes of Plemons, Rylance and Hanks, the script (co-penned by the Coens), the score by the perennial bridesmaid that is Thomas Newman and great work by Spielberg's usual posse. The problem with Stallone (even though he was great) is that he was playing a role and character that he already played in like 6 other movies, starting with Rocky back in the zero hundreds. You should know by now how the Academy feels about sequel performances (hint Angela Bassett).

I honestly think Eddie Redmayne should have been nominated/won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Marius in Les Mis. Sure, that film has its flaws but Redmayne's performance is a standout of the film, and as you said all the other nominees that year had already won Oscars. Also, it would have been a better win for Redmayne than winning for The Theory of Everything.

Just me, but Mark Rylance's performance in Bridge of Spies (which I love) is just the kind of thing I love. Where you can tell what he is thinking, just from the way he moves his eyes. I agree heartily, I love Richard E Grant. Despise Louise Fletcher.

Ali and Waltz won their 2nd oscars due to recency bias
Anyone could’ve won over Leto… terrible actor
Stallone lost due to popularity bias
Bale’s performance is very forgettable, Wahlberg not even getting a Lead Actor nomination is crazy
Pitt deserved that win but he was a lead as much as Leo
Plummer’s win was a legacy win but his performance in Beginners is truly amazing
Three Billboards is fantastic and Rockwell and especially McDormand both deserved those oscars
Moonlight is a true American cinematic masterpiece. As a gay man myself growing up in a similar culture and environment, there were moments in that film were I thought it was me, especially the scenes in school
JK Simmons win was for the common people. A movie that’s so universal that I don’t know a single human who dislikes it. Simmons performance might be the greatest acting performance this century aside from Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Bardem in NCFOM, Ledger in TDK, Theron in Monster and Washington in Training Day

John Mahoney in ‘Say Anything’ had better be on the list.

As to your point about Plummer winning in an otherwise unrecognized film, remember, his best competition that year was Nolte, in an even more drastic example. Beginners is a solid movie with a good story... warriors is not. Warrior was honestly a pretty bad film, it was just graced with the presence of Tom Hardy Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton all giving it their best. I respected Plummer a lot as an actor, and he deserved an oscar, but I'd be lying if I didnt day I would have preferred for Nolte to win.

Wow, I (respectfully) disagree with a lot of your comments! Okay, I agree with your low ranking of Waltz, I don't think his Django Unchained work was award-worthy, while PSH should have won that year. Jared Leto's win looks embarrassing now. And JK Simmons probably deserves his top ranking. But, 1.) Yes, Richard E. Grant should have won in supporting that year, because Ali's outstanding performance should have been nominated in lead instead. I thought his Green Book work was better and more memorable than his work in Moonlight. 2.) Rylance deserved his Oscar and should have been ranked top five on this list. 3.) Christian Bale stole every scene he was in in The Fighter, he was the best part of the movie. 4.) Sam Rockwell and his character are easily the best things about Three Billboards - the plot has holes throughout it and the other performances were fine but not great. Rockwell's acting and his thug-who-finds-redemption character are the reason to watch it.
