With both Ali and Waltz, I think you need to forget the fact that they had previously won an Oscar. It should not be an issue whatsoever. It’s always been contentious giving someone a ‘career Oscar’ and I think it the same should apply with someone who has previously won, it should be awarded to the best performance irrespective of previous awards or non-awards.

Sure Stallone had a narrative but he actually had some baggage with him while Rylance was a very respected dramatic actor both on screen and stage plus he was always very kind and humble. Tarantino really crafted an exquisite masterpiece in that one.
Brad Pitt's acting as Cliff Booth seemed flawless because the body language of Cliff Booth embodied into himself. All of his gestures, micro expression and the subtlety of his acting as Cliff Booth are worth winning an Oscar. Although I seemed to disagree with the assumption of Pitt's role could be co-lead. Cliff Booth is definitely a supporting actor, not because of his screen time but because he was meant to compliment Rick Dalton.

I’ve seen so many Bale movies recently; he’s going to go down as one of our generations best. From American Psycho, 3:10 to Yuma, Batman, to VICE and some of his more recent work like Pale Blue Eye and Hostilities. He’s so good.
Mark Rylance didn't get enough love that night, just because not as many people knew who he was compared to Stallone and they didn't appreciate his subtle acting and he also gave one of my favorite speeches
I think we'd get along super well Brian, I find myself almost always agreeing with your takes. Grant should have won over Ali 100%. I thought Ali was too technical in the role, especially in his emotional scenes. Some scenes felt forced and I think Grant was just phenomenal and was robbed of that award.
I haven't seen Beginners, but I certainly will check it out now, because based on the award win and your description of the performance, it seems like this was the perfect blend of deserved and also lifetime achievement Oscar. It sounds like a "Damn, he still got it." type of award.
I live in an area that only gets big Blockbusters and I drove 3 hours to see Whiplash and it was worth it. Absolutely incredible movie and JK Simmons is the Lion's Share of that
Stallone really lost the Oscar when he didn’t thank Ryan Coogler and Micheal B Jordan on stage at the golden globes. I still think about how awful that moment is since Coogler was the driving force behind Creed and had talked about how big a fan he was of the rocky movies. Really showed the kind of person Stallone is.
I know the best supporting actress winners of the 210s are coming soon and I just want to say Monique performance and win for Precious from 2010 is by far 4 the BEST of that decade!!!!!
Rylamce gave a masterclass performance in bridge of spies. He is also a far better actor than stallone in general. So I get hia win. For me he was second from the line-up. I awarded Tom Hardy that year.
I love Brad Pitt, but i think he is playing himself, not much of a challenge. I also think once upon a time in Hollywood is a little bit overrated, it is my least favorite or Tarantino, but to each their own.
I thought Brad Pitt was just good or okay in OUATIH. He does have a magnetic and charismatic presence, but does that make it an Oscar winning performance? I don't know. It's also arguably category fraud, as is the case with others this decade.
I feel the same way. That’s the one Tarintino movie I fell asleep on. Which never has happened with any of his movies; not even death proof. I just don’t get that movie.
I liked his performance too. As I liked him in Mr Nobody and Requiem for a dream. (Un)fortunately he accepted that role in Suicide Squad and that killed his career.

I think you should have added some additional context to the significance of Stallone winning in 2015. He was playing a character that HE created nearly 40 years ago. This was and is a beloved character, with many recognizing Rocky as one of the great American hero characters in film. Not to mention that he totally killed it in that role in Creed, and the award would've meant SO MUCH to him.

Just me, but Mark Rylance's performance in Bridge of Spies (which I love) is just the kind of thing I love. Where you can tell what he is thinking, just from the way he moves his eyes. I agree heartily, I love Richard E Grant. Despise Louise Fletcher.
I honestly think Eddie Redmayne should have been nominated/won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Marius in Les Mis. Sure, that film has its flaws but Redmayne's performance is a standout of the film, and as you said all the other nominees that year had already won Oscars. Also, it would have been a better win for Redmayne than winning for The Theory of Everything.

@@j.d.t.5761I would give it to Al Pacino. I ultimately think the 2020 best supporting actor race went to Pitt primarily because he was the only one who hadn’t won an acting Oscar (put it this way, if Al Pacino had not won an Oscar by the time of the Irishman, he easily wins)
I love your top 4! I thought Brad Pitt was just good or okay in OUATIH. He does have a magnetic and charismatic presence, but does that make it an Oscar winning performance? I don't know. It's also arguably category fraud, as is the case with others this decade. As always, wonderful commentary and video!
Christoph Waltz's performance in Django Unchained being labelled supporting may be a bit confusing to some but I personally would still consider it a supporting role because the character himself says he's supporting Django because it's Django's story which is why he usually does things in Django's interest and not his own. This isn't as iffy to me as Brad Pitt being the stunt double to Leonardo DiCaprio or Mahershala Ali being the client to Viggo Mortensen both being labelled supporting roles.
I have to disagree with you about Rylance. He was brilliantly nuanced in Bridge of Spies, playing a Russian spy (or at least a man accused of being one) and doing it in such a way that does not give him away at least until the end. Everyone in the movie hates him, including all the extras, except Tom Hanks, and yet they respect him. He needed to be a particular kind of convincing to pull all that off. I don't know how other actors would've interpreted the role. The movie is not Spielberg's best, but still worth a rewatch, if only for the acting from the likes of Plemons, Rylance and Hanks, the script (co-penned by the Coens), the score by the perennial bridesmaid that is Thomas Newman and great work by Spielberg's usual posse. The problem with Stallone (even though he was great) is that he was playing a role and character that he already played in like 6 other movies, starting with Rocky back in the zero hundreds. You should know by now how the Academy feels about sequel performances (hint Angela Bassett).
I don’t know if you ever consider this, but have you ever considered doing a ranking of Oscar winning performances directed by the same Director, like Martin Scorsese?
I agree on waltz as colead in django. Also that probably dicaprio wpuld had won in aupporting and also that psh should had won for the master. Also with Ali and richard e. Grant. We agree on nearly everyrhing again. Yeah!!!
The only thing I would disagree with is the idea that someone doesn't deserve an award because they already won one. Each year should be individual and each performance should be judged accordingly
*spoiler for this video below* I don’t know why, but the moment of Brian announcing J.K. Simmons as the winner, instantly followed by a clip of him blankly slapping Miles Teller twice in the movie, is strangely hilarious.
1. JK Simmons 2. Christoph Waltz 3. Sam Rockwell 4. Christian Bale 5. Jared Leto 6. Brad Pitt 7. Christopher Plummer 8. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) 9. Mahershala Ali (Green Book) 10. Mark Rylance
This category has honestly aged really bad 2 Oscars for Ali & Waltz 🙄 - Captain Phillips & Can You Ever Forgive Me were better Jared Leto 😖 Mark Rylance 🤷♂️ Sam Rockwell 👍 JK Simmons 😍 Christian Bale 😍 Brad Pitt 😍 Christopher Plummer 😍
Ali and Waltz won their 2nd oscars due to recency bias Anyone could’ve won over Leto… terrible actor Stallone lost due to popularity bias Bale’s performance is very forgettable, Wahlberg not even getting a Lead Actor nomination is crazy Pitt deserved that win but he was a lead as much as Leo Plummer’s win was a legacy win but his performance in Beginners is truly amazing Three Billboards is fantastic and Rockwell and especially McDormand both deserved those oscars Moonlight is a true American cinematic masterpiece. As a gay man myself growing up in a similar culture and environment, there were moments in that film were I thought it was me, especially the scenes in school JK Simmons win was for the common people. A movie that’s so universal that I don’t know a single human who dislikes it. Simmons performance might be the greatest acting performance this century aside from Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Bardem in NCFOM, Ledger in TDK, Theron in Monster and Washington in Training Day
I wanted t disagree with you on Mark Rylance, who is such a remarkable actor, but I'm not sure if Bridge of Spies is his best work. I'm glad he has an Oscar, but I wish he had been nominated for The Outfit. It's a very stagy film, but his performance - particularly his ability to have such extraordinary energy in moments of perfect stillness - is phenomenal.
JK Simmons's performance is indeed the crown jewel of this decade, which includes a mix of worthy winners and others who were merely OK.

I’ve seen so many Bale movies recently; he’s going to go down as one of our generations best. From American Psycho, 3:10 to Yuma, Batman, to VICE and some of his more recent work like Pale Blue Eye and Hostilities. He’s so good.
Makes me sad a completely forgotten performance took what would have been a historic Oscar for Stallone.
Mark Rylance didn't get enough love that night, just because not as many people knew who he was compared to Stallone and they didn't appreciate his subtle acting and he also gave one of my favorite speeches
Please, I need the best supporting actress and other decades, please.
Great Video Brian! When are we going to see the last Meryl Streep Video. We’re waiting……….
Really showed the kind of person Stallone is.
cry about it, people can forget to thank others on stage.
It was SO wonderful to see Christopher Plummer get recognition for his outstanding performance.
I think Pitt should have got one for 12 Monkeys, but alas,
i think he deserved both Oscars the years he won both of his acting golden globes
I know the best supporting actress winners of the 210s are coming soon and I just want to say Monique performance and win for Precious from 2010 is by far 4 the BEST of that decade!!!!!
Precious is a 2009 movie so it won't count for that list much like Waltz's Supporting Actor win for Inglorious Bastards didn't count for this list.
Rylamce gave a masterclass performance in bridge of spies. He is also a far better actor than stallone in general. So I get hia win. For me he was second from the line-up. I awarded Tom Hardy that year.
Are you going to do a version for the 2000's of every acting category?
Love you videos, Brian! Never miss one! Mahershala is my favourite in Moonlight. Maybe just because he’s so so beautiful I don’t know 😂🎉❤
1. JK
2. Mahershala (Moonlight)
3. Christian
4. Christopher
5. Mahershala (Green Book)
6. Brad
7. Sam
8. Christoph
9. Mark
10. Jared
Christian Bale was great in The Fighter, but also thought Geoffrey Rush was excellent in The Kings Speech
Also John Hawkes in Winters Bone and Garfield for SOcial Network. great year for supporting
Bale in lead for me, cause He IS colead and Hawkes in supporting
I disagree with Jared Leto
That performance was actually multi-faceted and really impressive
Well deserved win, and had no completion that year
I liked his performance too.
As I liked him in Mr Nobody and Requiem for a dream.
(Un)fortunately he accepted that role in Suicide Squad and that killed his career.
Do you think a cis man should be playing a trans woman 🧍♀️ in a movie?
I'm sorry, but seeing a cis man win for playing a trans woman is just sickening.
1. JK Simmons (Whiplash)
2. Brad Pitt (Hollywood)
3. Christoph Waltz (Django)
4. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
5. Christopher Plummer (Beginners)
6. Mark Rylance (Spies)
7. Sam Rockwell (3 Billboards)
8. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
9. Christian Bale (Fighter)
10. Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers)
I liked Pitts’s performance in 12 Monkeys a lot better than Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Not disputing the win here - just think the Academy missed the boat with that earlier film
Ah, yes. J.K. Simmons. Or, as I will always call him, Dr. Emil Skoda. Law and Order super-fans will know what I'm talking about there! 😊 By the way, you should do a video about songs that should have been nominated, but weren't. (Hint, hint. "Stayin' Alive" 😄🕺)
My Top 10 Best Supporting Actor Oscar Rankings of the 2010's

1. Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa (Inglourious Basterds)
Yet to see Beginners.
I still think about Chris Plummer’s acceptance speech. Very funny.
My Ranking:
#10 - Brad Pitt (On a Technicality because he's Leading) - My Pick: Al Pacino - The Irishman

8. Samuel L Jackson- Django Unchained (2012)
7. Willem Dafoe for Florida Project (2017)

3. Bale deserved if you see him supporting (2010)
2. J K Simmons deserved (2014)
1. Tom Hardy- The Revenant (2015)
thats my personal list and rankings
I love Lincoln and I love Tommy Lee jones in it. But tbh I saw a little too much of Tommy Lee Jones in his character and not so much his character
Please give us your own oscar choices for best picture! Qpuld be auch a great video! 🎉❤ I think we had nearly the same picks. I have whiplash and three billboards, too.
Captain phillips is such a great film.
I do agree Ali was a co-lead in “Green Book”. It was a good performance but definitely not the best in the category.
Just me, but Mark Rylance's performance in Bridge of Spies (which I love) is just the kind of thing I love. Where you can tell what he is thinking, just from the way he moves his eyes. I agree heartily, I love Richard E Grant. Despise Louise Fletcher.
I heard Sylvester Stallone Speech at the Globes hurt him because he didn’t mention Michael B Jordan and the Director
I honestly think Eddie Redmayne should have been nominated/won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Marius in Les Mis. Sure, that film has its flaws but Redmayne's performance is a standout of the film, and as you said all the other nominees that year had already won Oscars. Also, it would have been a better win for Redmayne than winning for The Theory of Everything.
the winners i would have chosen for the decade are
-Christian bale the fighter
-Christopher Plummer beginners
-Philip seymour hoffman the master
-Barkhad Abdi captain Philips
-J.K simmons whiplash
-Idris Elba beasts of no nation
-Mahershala ali moonlight
-Willem Dafoe the Florida project
-Richard E grant can you ever forgive me
-Joe pesci the Irishman
For 2019, it would be Willem Dafoe from The Lighthouse.
DiCaprio and Jackson were AMAZING in Django
I love your top 4! I thought Brad Pitt was just good or okay in OUATIH. He does have a magnetic and charismatic presence, but does that make it an Oscar winning performance? I don't know. It's also arguably category fraud, as is the case with others this decade.
As always, wonderful commentary and video!
Ive loved JK since Oz and Im so happy hes gotten the recognition he deserves.
Joe Pesci was better than Brad Pitt.
Bale’s performance was absolutely deserved. He steals every single scene he is in.
Not including Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds on this list is crazy to me. But then again I understand this list is just your opinion
Yeah!!!
Three billboards is nearly a masterpiece. I think it definitly ahould had won best picture and screenplay, too!!!
A race between keaton and redmayne. I literally cried for keatons gg win!! I agree with Stallone
I agree with you that Whiplash was the best picture of 2014. I also agree that Stallone should've won best supporting actor over Mark Rylance.
Thanks
I'd swap 'Christoph Waltz'-Django Unchained with 'Christopher Plummer'-Beginners at Number 9
not the spoiler of the first two spots in the background
The only thing I would disagree with is the idea that someone doesn't deserve an award because they already won one. Each year should be individual and each performance should be judged accordingly
*spoiler for this video below*
I don’t know why, but the moment of Brian announcing J.K. Simmons as the winner, instantly followed by a clip of him blankly slapping Miles Teller twice in the movie, is strangely hilarious.
1. JK Simmons
2. Christoph Waltz
3. Sam Rockwell
4. Christian Bale
5. Jared Leto
6. Brad Pitt
7. Christopher Plummer
8. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
9. Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
10. Mark Rylance
This category has honestly aged really bad
2 Oscars for Ali & Waltz 🙄 - Captain Phillips & Can You Ever Forgive Me were better
Jared Leto 😖
Mark Rylance 🤷♂️
Sam Rockwell 👍
JK Simmons 😍
Christian Bale 😍
Brad Pitt 😍
Christopher Plummer 😍
JK Simmons would be on my top 10 acting Oscar wins ever list
JK Simmons and Plummer are my #1&2
Ali and Waltz won their 2nd oscars due to recency bias
Anyone could’ve won over Leto… terrible actor
Stallone lost due to popularity bias
Bale’s performance is very forgettable, Wahlberg not even getting a Lead Actor nomination is crazy
Pitt deserved that win but he was a lead as much as Leo
Plummer’s win was a legacy win but his performance in Beginners is truly amazing
Three Billboards is fantastic and Rockwell and especially McDormand both deserved those oscars
Moonlight is a true American cinematic masterpiece. As a gay man myself growing up in a similar culture and environment, there were moments in that film were I thought it was me, especially the scenes in school
JK Simmons win was for the common people. A movie that’s so universal that I don’t know a single human who dislikes it. Simmons performance might be the greatest acting performance this century aside from Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Bardem in NCFOM, Ledger in TDK, Theron in Monster and Washington in Training Day
Mr Plummer ❤
J.K. Simmons was the best actor that decade 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 even more than winners in leading actors, like Phoenix, or Day-Lewis.
I think Jack here was asleep. @4:18
It's funny how humans can wrap their minds around things and fit them into their version of reality. Rick Riordan
