I love my Robert DeNiro, my Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson or Marlon Brando, but no actor ever, regardless of their gender, has given me the kind of feelings Meryl Streep has. In 2017, I decided to buy every film she got Oscar-nominated for on DVD, and watched them all in just a few weeks. It was a masterclass in acting, simple as that. So many memorable characters with so many layers and depth. She is indeed a cinematic treasure:) She will be 75 shortly. May she live another 20 years at least!
I have a same experience. I felt in love with her through "Devils" and never seen any of her films before. In 2008, after "Mamma Mia!', I decided to watch all of her Oscar-nominated films and felt overwhelmed after. "She has so many 'crystal masks'! How could she do it!?" - I said to myself.
Agreed, instead of Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins, Amy Adams should've been nominated for Arrival. What a strong, layered performance, especially seeing how the story's structure hinges on there not being a bum note in her acting.

As a hopeful romantic my favorite performance of hers will always be the Bridges of Madison County. She should have won over Susan Sarandon. Everything is subjective but that is her performance I love the best.
My favorite modern actress ever. Meryl Streep is a legend, truly one of the all-time greatest actors. Her performance in Sophie's Choice was truly SPECTACULAR! A true career defining role. I loved her performance in August Osage: County as well.

I still think she should have won for Doubt, no doubt about it. She also should have won for Devil Wears Prada. She should have 4 with Kramer and Sophie being her other two. Very good job, Brian.
Doubt is my pick for favorite Streep nomination. The obvious choice might be Sophie’s Choice for many but to me it’s a testament to how just fantastic of an actress she is. You can debate for hours abt what her career-best performance is within the top ten and no one would be technically incorrect.
One of my favorite performances although not Oscar movie stuff is "It's Complicated" with Steve Martin as Streep's leading man. I love that movie and will watch it any time I find it playing.
I used to always think people were referencing some classic romcom about a woman having to choose between two guys whenever they said "this is a real Sophie's choice" just for me to find out it originated from a movie about A MOM HAVING TO CHOOSE WHICH ONE OF HER TWO CHILDREN TO SAVE
Postcards and a Cry in the Dark are two of her most underrrated noms and performances. I can even say that Meryl may have given her best performance in A Cry in the Dark.

I completely agree. It's definitely in my Top 10. I think some critics unfairly accused Meryl of chewing the scenery. But the character of Violet is written as having fits of histrionics....and with good reason: she's a drug-addled elderly woman who's dying of cancer and is in considerable physical pain on a regular basis (as well as emotional pain of course). So I don't think Meryl's performance comes across in any way as "showy" - just realistic. Plus her character doesn't act that way throughout the entire film, which makes sense considering the ups and downs someone in her condition would be experiencing. I always cite the "cowboy boots" scene as an example of one of Violet's more restrained moments. And I think it's probably the most affecting scene in the movie. I compare it somewhat to the "getting divorced" scene from Prada. It really gives the viewer some insight into why this miserable, seemingly horrible human being acts the way she does. And Meryl of course performs it beautifully. Perhaps a little verbose on my part regarding this topic - LOL - but I thought I'd use your positive comment about OOC as a chance to share my similar view that Meryl does tremendous work in that film.

It's also uncomfortably exploitative with all the scenes of elderly Margaret Thatcher suffering from Alzheimer's. Julie & Julia should've been her third Oscar, her performance as Julia Child is full of life and just a delight to watch every step of the way. A much better biopic role than The Iron Lady. A great movie (the Julia parts at least) that always makes me hungry, lol. Her performance is close to the top for me. Streep called The French Lieutenant's Woman the worst movie she's made, lol. I can never watch Sophie's Choice again. It was too devastating, especially the titular scene. Great video! I need to watch The Bridges of Madison County now.
For years, I didn't really get the Meryl hype. I thought she was fine. But then I finally saw Sophie's Choice and I said to myself "I totally get it now". That performance (especially the choice scene) is one of the best ever put to film.

Not sure I can go there with you but her performance in it was fantastic. (I think you mentioned this in another video, but is there a director with more variable quality output than Robert Zemeckis? Can’t think of one offhand.)
Does it bother anyone that it took her twenty nine years to win a third Oscar but it only took Frances McDormand three? I don’t consider McDormand in the same league as Streep or Hepburn or Bergman.
I don't get how Frances McDormand has three Oscars either. In no way does she display the same versatility as Meryl or other actresses like Cate Blanchett who only has two. And to be frank Katharine Hepburn always came off as just Katharine Hepburn to me no matter the role she played. Meryl got all the roles, praise, worship and nominations for decades. Not feeling sorry for her having to wait that long for her 3rd Oscar. I thought she should have won her third for "A Cry in the Dark" back in the '80s. .

Great video as usual from you. I really don’t know how it is that you don’t have a major syndicated TV show. So thorough and great presentation. I’d love to see you cover Frances Mc Dormund. The academy sure loves her, as do I btw. Thanks for the Streep series ❤
Great video, Brian! Your hard work never goes unappreciated. This kind of content is my favourite thing about YT. My top five would be; Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, Postcards from the Edge, August: Osage County and Adaptation.
Meryl Streep has said she thinks her performance in French Lieutenant's Woman was massively overrated. (Graham Norton Show, 2016) There's a video edit of Julie and Julia that only features the Julia bits. I prefer it. I *loved* Florence Foster Jenkins (film and performance from Streep) so much more than Iron Lady (film and performance). I love this kinda thing, though. Thank you!
I think this is the ranking video we were all waiting for, even if wd all knew what No. 1 would be! Obviously, Sophie's Choice is her master class but I was pleased to see my favorite Streep performance in Bridges where it was on the list! Always love your videos and how prolific you are. Keep them coming!
gosh, i balled my eyes out watching the bridges of madison county, it was such a heartbreaking love story. and as a german i can attest that in sophies choice she speaks german with an eastern european/slavic accent. if its truly a polish accent i cant say, but her accent was very authentic!

I will never forget how disappointed I was that Meryl didn't win an Oscar for "Doubt." That long multi-decade Oscar drought SHOULD have ended there. Great movie. I would have loved to have seen her win for "Julie & Julia" as well. Despite being a huge fan of Meryl Streep, somehow I never saw "Bridges of Madison County" until very recently. (I think I avoided it because Clint Eastwood bugs me.) What an amazing performance she gave!!! Brilliant. (True to form, I was really irritated that Eastwood had the NERVE to give himself top billing over Meryl Streep in the credits. It's just absurd.)
Hi Brian! I would really love if you used chapters in your videos - it would make them so much easier to watch especially when I'm not able to watch a video all in one sitting 😊
Love Meryl Streep and i loved your video. I pretty much agree with you especially about Bridges of Madison County and of course her best performance in Sophie's Choice! She truly is a master of accents. No one comes close to the way she becomes the character
When you got to Into the Woods, you should've played Jared Leto's joke when he presented the Oscar that ceremony. I love Into the Woids, but it kinda perfectly summed it up: "Tonight, we honor four great women, and in accordance with California state law, Meryl Streep."
I wholeheartedly agree with your choices, especially the top 3, I have watched Sophie's Choice only once, because it was just soooo heart wrenching, but I will never ever forget it or her performance
I think the only Oscar winning performance that is up there in the S-tier cielings with Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice is Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind.
Into the woods, there was so much excitement around meryl streep performance because she was singing. The hype was so much, they marketed the movie around meryl streep singing
6. The Post (as Katharine Graham) 5. Out of Africa (as Baroness Karen von Blixen) 4. Florence Foster Jenkins (as Florence Foster Jenkins) 3. Julie and Julia (as Julia Child) 2. Kramer vs. Kramer (as Joanna Stern Kramer) 1. Sophie's Choice (as Zofia Zawistowska) Haven't seen her other nominations yet. Film I would nominate her for: Little Women (as Aunt March)
I haven't seen all of her films, but for me August In Osage County and The Iron Lady are my Top 2. I started Sophie's Choice but I just couldn't get past the first couple of scenes. I forgot about Doubt! It was surprisingly good. My God, that scene with Viola Davis was gut-wrenching!!!
My personal top 5 of her Oscar nominated performances: 1. The Bridges of Madison County 2. The Devil Wears Prada 3. A Cry in the Dark 4. Kramer vs. Kramer 5. Sophie’s Choice.
Sweet list. I would pop Postcards into the top 10, removing French Lt. Woman. Cry in the Dark and Silkwood, often forgotten performances, but 2 of my favs.
I remember watching Sophie's Choice years ago, after reading all the praises critics have lavished on her performance, and thinking to myself: ok what's so great about it? But as the movie unfolded, I got more and more absorbed by both the film and her totally devastating performance, absolutely in tears by the end of it. It's a performance that even now makes me tear up when I think about it. By far her best role... and I'm glad she won an Oscar for it.
Maybe I'm not discerning, but Florence Foster Jenkins is one of my favourite Meryl characters ... she CAN sing so to sing so badly and out of tune on camera ... it's highly entertaining to watch. I loved that movie.
To Australian ears, Meryl's Australian accent in a "Cry in the Dark" was a bit off. But she was imitating Lindy Chamberlain who was of New Zealand origin - so a New Zealand/Australian hybrid.
Good job, Brian! For me, her Iron Lady performance ranks a lot higher. I know a lot of people are not crazy about that film. I saw what she did as a master class in acting, and, for me, that was the film. I also rank A Cry in the Dark and Prada higher.
Annette Benning in American Beauty, Hilary Swank in Boy's Don't Cry, Reese Witherspoon in Election, Kirsten Dunst in The Virgin Suicides, and Cecilia Roth in All About My Mother. These should've been the 1999 Best Actress Nominees with Annette Benning winning.
I would have put POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE at number two. What a great performance! I loved her in that movie. SILKWOOD would have been number three. She should have won her third Oscar though for A CRY IN THE DARK.
Please do a video on ranking Meryl Streep's other performances that were not nominated for an Oscar. It can be top 20 or top 10. I bet Death Becomes Her is #1 and we can find others like The River Wild, Mamma Mia, Marvin's Room, Little Women in the ranking.
Brian actually did a video like this recently. Just check his recent uploads, you should find it easily. And (hint hint) I think you'll be very pleased with his choices! :)
I agree with your rankings. I'm not as hard on "Florence Foster Jenkins" performance as you or anyone else discussing Streep's Oscar nominations. Did you know Streep was not originally cast as Joanna In "Kramer Vs. Kramer"? She was cast in the JoBeth Williams role, and Kate Jackson was cast as Joanna. The filming was going to overlap with Jackson's filming schedule with her television series "Charlie's Angels." However, Aaron Spelling wouldn't budge, and Jackson has to drop out. Then Robert Benton moved Streep into the role and cast Williams as the naked woman the little boy encountered in the hallway late at night. 😅
Meryl Streep definitely should have won Oscars for "Bridges of Madison County" and "Doubt." "Dead Man Walking" is a bland movie and Sarandon is a so-so actress. As with Streep not winning for "Doubt" it was simply Kate Winslet's time giving two extraordinary performances in the same year.
Please give a rank ing of Glenn close oscar nominations and her top 3 performance for which she wasn't nominated @the academy contender +the academy contender
Agreed 100% about the number one and what it is said about her performance in Sophie's choice. For me is the best one of all time in cinema. Btw, Jessica Lange that year was incredible too in Frances. 1982 was amazing with these two unforgettable performances.❤
Not surprised by "Florence Foster Jenkins" at the bottom, but I guess I forgot about it because I figured it was a fight between "Ironweed" and "Music of the Heart". The latter one is such a safe, conventional movie.
Hey! Thanks a lot for your videos. We just like the same stuff. Pulp Fiction is so good, a turning point for cinema, vthat I guess the Academy was overwhelmed with Pulp Fiction.
I don't agree with many of your comments and opinions about the nominations, especially about IRONWEED, which is a fantastic movie! Also saying over and over again that she chose roles as Oscar baits, is really bad. You're making assumptions and bringing Streep to a lower level. This should not be your approach. And obviously you don't like many of her movies. So I ask myself why you do segments on Meryl Streep?? Likes baiting?? Not impressed. Her films, including IRON LADY & ONE TRUE THING are great!
FYI: Silkwood is FINALLY streaming! YAY!!!!!! It’s on Hulu/ Disney + and the moment it was recommended to me I-let’s just say I apologize to my neighbors who heard me gasp so loud! 😂. I never clicked on a link so fast!
Streep's Miranda Priestly dominated Devil Wears Prada, even when she wasn't on screen - a testament to her iconic characterization.
OMG OSCARMAN!
And at the Oscars ceremony when she did a little ad lib from her seat with Anne and Emily was icing on the cake.
My husband was so affected by Sophie's Choice that he saw it once and swore he'd never watch it again.

The last 6 I wouldnt nominate her, but she definitly should be nominated for The Hours and Death becomes her.
The G.O.A.T.
Doubt, Bridges of Madison County & Devil Wears Prada also deserves Oscar
That scene in the rain in Bridges.....absolutely devastating!!!
Meryl Streep has said she thinks her performance in French Lieutenant's Woman was massively overrated. (Graham Norton Show, 2016)
There's a video edit of Julie and Julia that only features the Julia bits. I prefer it.
I *loved* Florence Foster Jenkins (film and performance from Streep) so much more than Iron Lady (film and performance).
I love this kinda thing, though. Thank you!
1.) Sophie's Choice, 2.) The Bridges of Madison County, 3.) The Devil Wears Prada, 4.) SHE-DEVIL, 5.) Kramer vs Kramer
I see what you did with your DVD collection. 😂 I loved Florence Foster Jenkins. She was so funny and very moving.
This is a wonderful piece of criticism. Bravo.
It feels like Adaptation is a little low. That would be one of the wins I'd give her, she's truly unforgettable in that film.
Into The Woods is my fav all time Streep movie and performance
100% agree about Sophie's choice. Many of her nominations were just because she's Meryl Streep and were undeserved in my opinion.

Justin Henry was 8 years old when he was nominated for Kramer vs. Kramer.
Doubt was amazing and she was indeed amazing in it.
I never get tired of Meryl's content. Plz keep doing it. Haha.
Thank you! With a (very) few minor quibbles, but Doubt, Bridges, Sophie-absofuckinglutely!
Meryl Streep in "Sophie's choice" and Glenn Close in "Dangerous liaisons". These are my two favorite performances of the 80s. And of all time i think
Hi Brian! I would really love if you used chapters in your videos - it would make them so much easier to watch especially when I'm not able to watch a video all in one sitting 😊
Couldn’t agree more on A Cry in The Dark; it’s criminally underrated and deserves more love and mention. The performance is flawless!!
Thanks for another excellent video, Brian! I agree with your choices.
Love Meryl Streep and i loved your video. I pretty much agree with you especially about Bridges of Madison County and of course her best performance in Sophie's Choice! She truly is a master of accents. No one comes close to the way she becomes the character
1. Cry in the Dark
2. Sophies Choice
3. Prada
4. Kramet
5. Bridges
6. One True Thing
7. August
8. Silkwood
9. Ironweed
10. Adaptation
When you got to Into the Woods, you should've played Jared Leto's joke when he presented the Oscar that ceremony. I love Into the Woids, but it kinda perfectly summed it up:
"Tonight, we honor four great women, and in accordance with California state law, Meryl Streep."
6. The Post (as Katharine Graham)
5. Out of Africa (as Baroness Karen von Blixen)
4. Florence Foster Jenkins (as Florence Foster Jenkins)
3. Julie and Julia (as Julia Child)
2. Kramer vs. Kramer (as Joanna Stern Kramer)
1. Sophie's Choice (as Zofia Zawistowska)
Haven't seen her other nominations yet.
Film I would nominate her for: Little Women (as Aunt March)
Although Meryl is not my favorite actress, I am here to support Brian, 52minutes is quite an effort.
Well done! Thanks a lot ❤
My personal top 5 of her Oscar nominated performances:
1. The Bridges of Madison County
2. The Devil Wears Prada
3. A Cry in the Dark
4. Kramer vs. Kramer
Postcards from the edge should be top five. the movie is fantastic. She is phenomenal. This was massively underrated on your part.
Lindy Chamberlain had a distinct accent. Meryl wasn't doing a generic accent. She was doing Lindy.
Hell to the Fuck no.
I agree with all, but not in bening winning. Swank deserved that win for sure
Doubt is her best performance of all time.
I would have put POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE at number two. What a great performance! I loved her in that movie. SILKWOOD would have been number three. She should have won her third Oscar though for A CRY IN THE DARK.
I think the same way. Was blown away by that performance. Also didn't hurt that Sam Neill was in it. I've loved him since My Brillant Career.
Amazing video ❤❤❤
Long list of mereel streep
Amazing she get alot of nomnations for her all role
❤❤❤❤
An oscar worthy video
Please do a video on ranking Meryl Streep's other performances that were not nominated for an Oscar. It can be top 20 or top 10. I bet Death Becomes Her is #1 and we can find others like The River Wild, Mamma Mia, Marvin's Room, Little Women in the ranking.
Brian actually did a video like this recently. Just check his recent uploads, you should find it easily. And (hint hint) I think you'll be very pleased with his choices! :)
Thole hours was her best not nominated for an oscar
My favorites is Florence Foster Jenkins.
I lose my breath watching Meryl in movies. I have my favorites. She will always be one of my top five favorite actresses.
go with the photographer.... I read the book. The book was great.
My ranking
1.sophie
2.doubt
3.august osage
4. Devil
5.iron lady
6.kramer
7. Adaptation
"Doubt" is her best non winning performance (although"Bridges" is up there). I loved this movie so much.
Meryl can do anything. Hell she can play me in a film and get an Oscar nomination out of it.
Brian, have you ever ranked Katherine Hepburn’s 12 nominations? I think that would be fascinating to watch! Great video, by the way!
I couldn’t agree with you more on her win for Iron Lady! It hurt me for Viola Davis to lose, but she is a legend! 💯📠
