- For almost 40 years, Meryl Streep has portrayed an astonishing array of characters on stage and screen, garnering three Academy Awards for Best Actress and an unsurpassed record of 19 nominations. Her latest film is Stephen Frears’ “Florence Foster Jenkins,” based on the inspiring true story of an eccentric New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer. “Florence Foster Jenkins,” which opens August 12, is just one of a number of hit films in which Ms. Streep has sung, including “Into the Woods,” for which she earned her 19th Oscar nomination, “Ricki and the Flash,” “Mama Mia,” “Prairie Home Companion” and “Silkwood,” among others. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear her talk about the connection between acting and music with New York Times chief classical music critic Anthony Tommasini.

MERYL STREEP IS SUPERB. As an actress and as a person at the same time.
She gets him. He is too passionate... and she always brings her best foot forward, she works with him and make this interview amazing. wow.
Well said!
Very well observed, Meryl is an incredible intelligent but humble and kind person.
Meryl Streep is the most fantastic actor who can wrap you up into the role she's playing.

Not only is Meryl Streep the greatest actor of our time, but she she is a brilliant mind with such depth of empathy and awareness of all that matters in being an interesting and successful human being.
I do love her a ton, but she is not the greatest. It’s not a fair statement. That encourages people to pit women against each other. There are plenty of other great wonderful actresses. I think each woman in the industry should be her own standard. Thank you and goodbye. We need to stop saying that she’s the greatest. She is great. She’s wonderful. & leave it at that:)
@@cece8095 But what the original commenter said about her empathy and awareness is very true. She has told so many wonderful stories of interesting women from our world. It was absolutely unbelievable for me when she came to Australia in the late 80s to play Lindy Chamberlain, who had been accused of murdering her baby, because the Law didn’t believe her when she said “a dingo took my baby” Meryle did her bit to join our protest to prove Lindy innocent.
It took years. A very shameful part of our history.
While writing this, she has shared her knowledge of our Indigenous people which is awesome.
She is a wonderful woman, who keeps her own ego in perspective.
@@cece8095 By the way l do appreciate your initial comment about comparison.
@@cece8095 There is nothing wrong w/ competition. It doesn't need to mean to pit people against each other. It just means striving to be better for yourself. When I was young, there was always someone better at something than me. The best typist in the class made me push to be better and catch up. I had nothing against the person who was in the lead spot, it just gave me something better to shoot for myself. Meryl is one of the best actresses. It doesn't take away from other great actresses to recognize her excellence above most. I can't think of a better actress, just others somewhere in her league.
When she said "you'll have to stop me", I was thinking no Meryl please talk forever!! Love her
Only an actress with the experience and caliber of Meryl Streep can impersonate and give the right colors to all these interesting characters.
What a priceless gift this remarkable lady is to all of us. She's as emotionally generous as she is bewilderingly talented. I saw her for the first time in 1979 live in a NYC off-Broadway production of Brecht/Weill's Happy End. I'd gone because I loved the show, and had no idea who Streep was or would become. After that mind-blowing performance, however, I knew.
Oh I envy you! This gave me a chill. I am so keen to visit NYC for many reasons and one of those reasons is to visit the Performing Arts Library; they have video footage of her earlier stage performances.
Is there anything else you can tell us about watching that performance?
@@samsong24 If you know the show, you know her character (Halleluiah Lil) has virtually ALL the songs. And OMB did she sing them! Bilbao Song, Surabaya Johnny, Sailors’ Tango, and on and on. It’s a piece I knew by heart, every moment of which she did more perfectly than I could have dreamed. You could tell she was a volcanic talent. She wore her hair in long puffy curls, almost Afro-style, and simply glowed. Her co-stars, Christopher Lloyd and Grayson Hall, were both excellent but paled by comparison. I kick myself to this day I didn’t go backstage after for an autograph. It was the late 1970s so you could still do that, and this was before Manhattan and Deer Hunter. Still, it remains the most remarkable stage performance I’ve ever seen.
Thank you so much! Theatre is such a precarious thing and most of the time it only stays alive by memory. Such a treat to be in direct contact with somebody who had this experience. I could just pick your brains all day lol. Have you read her biography? It's really good and goes into great detail about her time at Yale and how she was just ready for it from day one. @@jeffwatkins352

I love Meryl Streep. Don't we all. I find her so real, so unaffected and her gorgeous gentle voice has made every character she's ever played unforgettable to me. I love how elegantly she dresses too.
Here, she has dressed very modestly. It’s unusual in this day.
Such a beautiful soul. She is so gentle and gracious. Her gift is the ability to listen and hear the words that are omitted from the conversation. Her charm and wit is unparalleled. Thank you Meryl.
"A very big personality who was confined to the home". Can Meryl Streep turn a phrase, Wow!
This woman is a master at her craft. I'm in awe of her. My favorite actress ever.
The Into The Woods cut gave me CHILLS!!! What a great actor-of-the-song
Interviewers often irritate me by interrupting or trying to impress with their own knowledge, but this was an excellent interviewer who was delightful in his own right without overshadowing the guest.
When she gave that girl a hug it brought tears to my eyes. Meryl is so gorgeous, lovely and generous. I'm so in love with that woman 😍 .... not in a creepy way, Meryl 😉😂
Lovely Lipstick no she isnt shes just rude get over it her neighbours say so
MrDante1047 Fake rumor. Ever thought about people who just look for attention? People who have met her can attest to her warm and kind nature. She literally hugged a girl, I’m sorry but you can’t deny what’s right in front of your face. I’m pretty sure video evidence is better proof than random internet rumors.
Meryl Streep is so smart, elegant and beautiful. Of course she's a brilliant actor, too.
why is she so poetic, i'm in love
As far as I am concerned Meryl Streep can do no wrong. Amazing Actress, wonderful woman and a Diveine Talent! Thank you for all the joy you bring into the world!
Meryl is the greatest star and a noble human being. Lucky we are that we live in her time. She is my inspiration too🌹
Wow that was great. I could listen to this women all day everyday. Her conversations are like poetry. She’s not known for being one of the greatest actors of all time for nothing. And she comes across as a woman with a lot of heart and intelligence. Great great interview 🙏
Meryl is the best American actress of our time. In a class of her own and nothing but class!
Two genuine souls. Refreshing.
Exactly 💙
She is brilliant. Very modest
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful interview of an exceptional person & one of the best actors of all time.
From a mad keen 75yo Aussie fan.
"If there's nothing but STEM, there's no FLOWER" -Meryl Streep
She is great... And I love her...❤️
In every role she plays she is totally convincing , always worth watching in a vast variety of characters, good informative interview .
“#BarbraStreisand…she had said that she was an actor who sang…I knew that. When I was sixteen, I listened to her records obsessively because she seemed to be someone who was telling a story in each song. And each one was almost its whole little narrative film. There was something so dramatic about how she did what she did.”
Are you kidding me, Meryl in Postcards from the Edge, "I'm checking out". Have a listen, brilliant!!!!!
I love her because she’s so funny too me in any genre of acting she does.
Great interview. Pleasantly surprised, although I shouldn't have been, at how highly intellectually this interview was. Enjoyed immensely! Always a fan of Ms. Streep's work, but she has been elevated personally in my eyes. A delightful hour, well spent.
I love Meryl Streep, she is one of my favorite actresses of all times I love every 1 of her movies good or not so good. I just love her so.
“If there’s nothing but stem there’s no flower.”
👏🏽👏🏽
What a great artist she is... a living legend
What a great interview, she seems so nice and humble
Oh he loves her and loves his great luck in being able to engage in this way. He is passionate, yes but about his subject not himself. And Miss Streep really comes through!
Fascinating! I wish the interview was longer. If she retired now, she would still leave the most extraordinary legacy of performances. And Trump thinks she's overrated. Hah!
she will be remembered as a great actress. trump will be as the worst president.
Ha! And he should wish he had a *rating* at all above 0!
With even that, compared to the greatest actress of the century, his 'rating' in any endeavor of his present 'occupation he would need a 100 years to rise above
that *0* to a 99!
Trumps the one that’s overrated
@@loisfolk5492 yeah, I think that Trump does all those weird things to get people's attention. And then when people starts talking about him, he gets the attention.
she is a grate actress, probably the best and it's incredible how humble she is.
Elle est adorable avec son sourire 👍
People are to critical of the interviewer.. he was more involved than he should’ve been, but he did his research and I think everyone enjoyed the interview at the end.
Well not thanks to him!
Wonderful She is
Love her.
Absolutely beautiful. I love this woman.
You are the consummate, informed, researched, charming interviewer. 👏 Thank you.
New Jersey’s talent well displayed. ALKS. Once an actor like her reaches the top, everything is possible. Her talent is undeniable. She can play any role she wants and succeed. Congrats MSI
Meryl is so loving and motherly , I got emotional watching this.
A beautiful singer and woman 👩🦰❤️
What a classy woman!
Wonderful classy Meryl and funny, professional fantastic interview/chat by Anthony Tomassini. I could listen to them forever and the amazing musicality of their voices.
I wonder how Meryl was as a student. Her teachers taught her, but learned from her so much!! Meryl finds colors in lyrics…a unique painting for each unforgettable performance.
An angel that wears anything. May she continues being blessed and an inspiration for so many of us.❤️❤️❤️
Thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
How great for us to be able to listen to this smart woman and be able to watch her wonderful work. That makes me so happy! Hopefully she’ll want‘s to work for many years! I‘m looking so forward to see more of her.
I LOVE Meryl Streep!!!!
As a former actor and composer I love what she says about Music -- "the 'sleuth-gate' (how do you spell that?) of the Soul . " :-) .
Perfect description of the effect music and special lyrics.
It’s spelled “sluice-gate”
Most Amazing and Graceful actress
as a singer there are TOO MANY gold nuggets i learn and take from this. I will rewatch this many times until I remember everything they both say. Wow some things I knew but others I am in awe and enlightened I never thought before clicking this Meryl Streep interview I would receive such knowledge. Jfc
I’m sorry I fell in love with her work so late I missed out on so much but better late than never …. Meryl😍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹♥️
❤ Beautiful interview and beautiful lessons to learn. Very inspirational.
Remarkable Interview! Acting is a special skill, Capturing the essence of the whole which requires " listening ". It is the most essential aspect of life, the Voice speaks volumes. Thank you, The New York times Event and your eloquence Meryl Streep on Womens suffragette, History, Democracy and Progress. I love your versatility, your truly beautiful and amazing.💜🕯💜🕯
I just love her.
He is just doing his job. And she knows that. To me this is just two people having a converstation
Thank you, Bobby. The interviewer is clearly an admirer... but this never felt like he was hogging the interview.
The best interviews are, to an extent, teamwork. ;)
Yes but it is not supposed to be a conversation. It is an interview. No one is there to hear that guy talk and bore us to death.
Great actress !!
can this man let Meryl talk?!!
no, that's not part of his agenda
MultiKarola24 He is just sharing his feelings and excitement that the rest of us feel. I think he did a great job.
he talks more than her ;she is a star !
He's like a rádio. Take off him please!
I think the is really unfair. He does a marvelous job and Ms. Streep obviously appreciates his expertise.
I loved this interview I really loved Meryl Streep In into the woods and the movie ps that she did with Paul Rudd and Topher grace really amazing
I loved what she said about Geraldine Page.
You are so fucking jealous it just isn't funny!
Wonderful interview with Meryl 🌈🙏
Listening this interview to Meryl Streep I can see how deep she studies every character she plays to perfection.
Good grief. Who let this guy on the stage? Endless pre-amble to statements that aren't quite questions. Reading lyrics we're about to hear anyway. Continually stating the obvious. He's infuriating. It's a testament to Streep's acting ability that she manages to stay pleasant and engaged throughout.
I felt that he talked too much, rather than giving the lion's share of the airtime to the person he was interviewing...in this case, Streep. Always disappointing and annoying in ANY interview, when host uses most of the airtime for his own voice and opinions.
He is passionate. What didn’t you do it? Did your boss chose him over you. No, I didn’t think so.🤪
Well… i think it was more of a conversation between two people who are passionate about what they are discussing. He did ask quite a few interesting questions that led to conversations between the two that they both seemingly enjoyed. He didn’t overwhelm her with too many questions, It was calm, relaxed, and well structured.
Definitely wanted more of Meryl
He did rather keep going on about the connection between speaking and singing. But on the whole I quite liked him and I think she did too.
She is just amazing Meryl have seen quite a few of her movies.. Sophies choice so emotional so intense that move..
She is also a great singer, my opinion. We all know what a superb actress she is.
Does this guy ever shut up? My God. I'm totally enamored with Streep but cannot even watch this disastrous interview. Another example of Streep's professionalism. She smiled all the way through and let him drone on and on.
"The changing status of women is the most de-stabilizing event in human history. You see the reverberation of it all around the world." WOW. Truth..
She looks great .
So intelligent, talented, amazing Meryl Streep! I love Meryl Streep!
"I believe in illusion and happiness. Sometimes happiness is an illusion that we need to prop up and support, just as much as the dreadful truth."
Excellent podcast!! Informative. Authentic. Inspiring! Keep the good work going. 👍🕉️🙏
This lady is by far one of the greatest actors ever since Betty Davis ❤️
Happy birthday meryl from italian boy live in rome
56:48 She is such an amazing actress! She can convey a personality so easily and quickly it's incredibly. From the know-it-all rebel to the innocent wannabe.
Love Meryl 😀
It was 72 minutes of pure aesthetic and spiritual pleasure to listen this maevellous lady
Thanks so much
Tony Jay, in Disney's "Hunchback," sings to Quasimodo as Judge Claude Frollo, with words quite similar to "Stay With Me." Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz are both icons of musical theater lyricism, and obviously borrow from one another, when the storyline demands it.

So supertrue! Voice is sooo important in defining someone

thank you for this masterclass. xo
Meryl Streep is a treasure. This is just wonderful. (But seeing that black and white of Juiia Child, I can't help thinking about Dan Akroyd doing Julia Child on Saturday Night Live)
she made my hair stand up on end all over my body singing as the witch!
Terrible terrible interviewer. Streep is so good it doesn’t matter who she sits down with she will shine regardless.
What a graceful, interesting interview 😅
You are beautiful Miss Meryl Streep
There are a little tooooooo mmuuuuuucccchhhh clips😂 But... Meryl is still amazing!💖
The man is a nuisance! She is great as always.

Anthony Tommasini has done his homework and is musically grounded.
Una actriz mas que encanntadora
Love you Meryl, ❤
I was very surprised to hear that she majored in costume design. Whenever I have seen her at gala events, most of the time she was horribly dressed and I always wondered who in the world dressed her. She is, without a doubt, one of the finest actors that has ever been on the screen. She is a great person, I am sure, in the real world. I would pay dearly just to meet her for lunch along with a couple other people.
Beautiful vocal❤❤❤❤❤
