My husband and I saw this movie earlier this week - most of the patrons at the matinee showing we’re of our vintage and lived these events. To a person, at the conclusion everyone stood and clapped! A timely and important reminder that journalists who do their jobs are essential to uncovering the truth and bringing it forward. Kudos and thanks to Spielberg and the fine actors who did this so well!

I don't think Tom Hanks is underrated - I think he is the best actor of my lifetime - also he regularly gets good scripts and makes the best out of them. I think he has made the most money of any actor - well deserved. I do not know of any Hanks' films that I did not like or rather that I didn't love.

When I think of Spielberg, I think of the unbridled power that gets unleashed when you get to do what you were born to do. Most of us do ok. We find a niche, get a pay check that supports us and we do fine. I've watched so many documentaries on the way he works, Jurassic Park, Schindler's list, Saving Private Ryan, building shots, running with a camera, racing actors through different versions of a line. He was generally touched by something special.

I saw THE POST yesterday and did find it FUN. It never flagged, kept me interested all the way through, and made me laugh in the end, when I could see the movie as a prequel to ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN.

    • @BartAlder
      @BartAlder 5 лет назад +2

The Post ends exactly where ATPM starts. Just watched both in one sitting and it's almost seamless. That said, Tom Hanks is great but Jason Robards was absolutely outstanding and forced to choose between the two Ben Bradlees it's Robards hands down. That's not shade thrown at Tom Hanks, it's just that Robards was exceptional, he could mix menace with charm in the same line, you like him even when he's rather threatening. Both films are terrific of course.
And Meryl Streep, my god, there aren't enough superlatives. Not only hasn't she ever delivered a single bad performance, I've yet to see her give a great performance in an otherwise average film. For my money she is the most bankable star in the actors' firmament. A staggering career. My least favourite of hers is Iron Lady, I've only watched that one twice!

  • @veritas6335

The world hasn't changed much with regard to women. This interviewer directs all her questions to the men and literally ignores Meryl Streep! And the movie is largely ABOUT Katharine Graham. Whitford skewered her perfectly and summed up the theme hilariously with his incisive "what Meryl is trying to say is...." crack. Bravo.

It is ironic and illuminating that in an interview in which the Harvey Weinstein/Me Too moment in history is discussed at length, the female film critic and interviewer goes through forty minutes of the interview without directing a single question to Ms Streep, as if she were not even there. Shame on her. It’s easy to observe that Ms Streep finally grew disgusted and interjected herself into the conversation. Otherwise a very interesting discussion among some of the real pros in the industry.

Just saw the film and it’s very good - obviously intended as a message to counter the “ fake news propaganda” but nonetheless a great piece of drama. Tremendous performances but look at the cast. There is a scene with Streep with her daughter in the grandchildren’s bedroom that should be a requirement for acting students to see - an ode to her craft.

And I remember the Pentagon Papers: my step-dad was there (infantry... not a good gig) and we'd watch Uncle Walter every night and he'd say 'The Army is lying to them all' or, more specifically, 'Westmoreland is a liar. The body counts are all lies. We cannot win this.' When the Pentagon Papers came out, he was vindicated, and I started my path to becoming a reporter, and then an activist.

I know of a supervisor in astrophysics who stole a female honours candidate's thesis and published it with his name on it. She appealed to her university and they dropped her enrolment and her supervisor, a man of course, was not even censured. Academia is one of the more enlightened places, more accepting of women in positions of influence than the mainstream and this crap still goes on there. It's disgusting and the people who coattail on the accomplishments of others, mostly men exploiting women of course, should all be banned from the gene pool.

Powerful and Deep film; Shakespearian-esque characters and relationships. The pervasive purple hue of the image however makes the film look like another bad Blu-ray transfer; Speilberg is going for authenticity with image but wow...purple color timing.

saw "The Post" just yesterday and bloody hell, it was a great movie. btw, you could've transitioned the end into "All the President's Men"!
(spoiler alert a future movie : "Chappaqiddick", is based off of another Nixon-era scandal which was one of the defenses against Nixon and his Watergate cover-up)

You just don't get it do yah the context the most important aspect of people understanding history so they see the present for what it is something Hanks/Spielberg/Streep feel as if they are above because if they saw reality for what it is they'd have to see themselves in the mirror but like the vampires they act as they refuse to truly see what they are & defend the status quo like why they supported Clinton they think everything is as it should be because they've been elevated. Bubbles burst & those so high will realize their golden wings aren't functional & down they'll go sad to say but true.

I found hope by watching this. I pray that, "history repeats itself" is true. I can't wait to see this movie, (side note I totally love Bradley Whitford, I was a big big west wing fan) and I want to say thank you to whoever produced this. It has given this 52 year old woman some hope which unfortunately I have very little of. After what I have lived thru during the last 30 years of my life. Arguable what was suppose to be the best years of my life. I wake up worried every day about my 17 year old daughters future and by the way she is a total alien to me since the changes that have taken place in the past 30 years make her and I so so very different. For example in my late 20's I was the marketing director of a coliseum that had sporting and live events, I paid 20K for a full page ad in the Sunday Arts section of the paper to advertise the power rangers.....I had no computer.... and I made advertisements on the copy machine....She heard her first busy signal at age 10....has never read a newspaper and she barely watchs tv BUT someone who watch this will be happy to know that she does go to the movies!! So maybe, just maybe all is not lost.

    Mr. Speilburg
I would think a movie about the life of Doug Layton when he was voice for the Alabama Crimson Tide would reveal religious tension in America and the world. Doug always thought of himself as a great pontificator with his skill at public speaking. He was active in bringing about the burning Beetles albums in 1966.
“Burn The Beatles!”1966: Bigger Than Jesus? | The Pop History Dig
I think the timing is right to get America back on the side of the British since the death of the Queen. The Royal family is having their troubles and this would take attention off the negative waves floating around about whether or not to have a monarchy in Britain. The truth has not been revealed of how Doug Layton really felt about the actions of Americans toward John Lennon and his comment about Jesus Christ. It would be best to create a movie at this time while his only daughter Tyler Layton is still alive. You could consult with her so she could fill in the blanks and do it in a way to make it into a movie. She alone may have the resources to locate those who are still alive to uncover the truth.
Doug’s life alone would be a way to include the sports of football told by the commentators of Birmingham during the time of Bear Bryant. I do not feel a proper movie has been made which tells the truth of that period during racial unrest in Alabama. It would reveal the truth about the negotiations of Bryant to get Southern Cal to come to Birmingham with Slam Bam Cunningham the black running back. Forrest Gump just did not give justice to the life and times of Bear Bryant as commentated by Doug Layton and Eli Gold.
His background in the Marble Capital of the world in Sylacauga Alabama would be and inspiration to the Sylacauga Emerging slogan they have for the Marble Capital. Doug started out as a radio announcer at WMLS there in Sylacauga. It is also the home of Jim Nabors and his many friends who may still be living there.
I hope you consider the possibilities of this break through opportunity.

    • @toddvandell85
      @toddvandell85 3 года назад +1

      @Matt Orfalea
Well, what they really mean by a timely story, is more that it's actually timeless.
      Evergreen, if wou will.
It's timely from the standpoint of, no matter what year you watch it, it will always be relevant.
I haven't seen it yet, but it's walking down cinematic paths previously walked by earlier movies like *All The President's Men.*
If you knew your film history, at all, or just your American history in general, which your question makes painfully clear you're entirely clueless about, you'd realize that this movie is set way back in the early 70s, nearly 50 years ago, when Washington Post newspaper people like Ben Bradlee and Katherine Graham were prominent figures at the paper.
I'll blame your obviously very young age for your ignorance.
The reason there's nothing about Wikileaks?
Wikileaks didn't exist in 1971, the year the movie is set in, and also just two years after Katharine Graham took over as publisher of The Washington Post, a first, in the newspaper industry.
A female newspaper publisher was unheard of at the time.
      Anyway.
      The point being?
Your references are completely irrelevant to this movie, because The Post movie is *SET* in *1971.*
Not one of your references had anything to do with that time period.
      WikiLeaks wasn't established until 2006.
35 years after this movie's time setting.
Edward Snowden was born in 1983, 12 years after this movie is set.
So, your references may be more current/timely, but they have precisely nothing to do with a movie set in 1971.
I think the more correct word they should have used?
      The movie is *timeless.*
Even though it's set in 1971, much of it's message is still relevant today.
      That's what they mean.
      And for all that?
This is a movie about *The Washington Post.*
      Not about WikiLeaks.
      Not about Edward Snowden.
Or Chelsea Manning, who wasn't born until 1987, 16 years after this movie is set.
      Pay better attention next time.
Those people were whistle-blowers to WikiLeaks.
Their stories came out in The Washington Post, eventually, yes, but again, far later than 1971, the year this movie is set in.
Can't discuss history that hasn't happened yet, especially in a movie.

What about the painters and photographers who have reflected the beauty and power of women in their work? Streep is grandiose and misguided. She openly claims the women are in some way superior to men, to the applause and approval of everyone in the room! I don’t think women are any better than men, it think we’re just different. When did it become a competition anyway?

I need to see this movie. My kids need to see it when they can. When schools bring back the arts, that's when I'll have faith in them. Instead they let parents walk in and destroy normalcy for all to have a stable upbringing. Does that make sense? When both sides seek and destroy we all loose. Reading books...key. Will lack of good schools take my children's future? For truely great schools I think we need truely great parents. If the parents are messed up?? I think they need the understanding and help first then the kids. So I think the chicken is before the egg, hence stablize familys...stablizes schools... homes... futures. Fix. the court system. Key to helping families.
