You totally should be an Academy voter. You're thoughtful and consistent in your analysis, even when I disagree. Can't wait to see how many you got right!
@@mel4975The Academy creams their jeans whenever black, feminist, or LGBTQ themes are the central focus. I guarantee you if Toni Collette had given the EXACT same performance in "Hereditary" playing a mother whose gay child was a victim of a hate crime or who had to fight against a misogynistic cult she would've gotten a nomination.
Naomi Scott blew me away. I thought her performance absolutely should be recognized. It’s a sin that horror film performances aren’t celebrated. I will never get over Tony Colette - Hereditary and even Florence Pugh -midsommar not being nominated for those performances.
Naomi carried that movie more than the actress who embodied "Rose " in the original...The first film was all over the place...2 is a heavily centered story, eerily dipping between mind and reality
I still say Florence got in for Little Women as a consolatory way of saying “here, you did phenomenally but we can’t nominate horror cause we’re not cool enough” 😂
It's because none of these movies had anything to do with black people being oppressed, gay people being oppressed, or women being oppressed. It's honestly that simple. That's what the academy is obsessed with nowadays. If you want your horror film to get anywhere close to Best Picture it HAS to have a glaring political message like in "Get Out" and "The Substance".
Naomi Scott in Smile 2 is so phenomenal! I think it’s one of the best lead performances in a horror film ever, the same level as Toni Collette in Hereditary.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on Naomi Scott. She acted the hell out of that movie. It's probably the best performance in a horror movie since Toni Collette in Hereditary.
How is it possible that your preferred nominations are so much better (in my opinion) than what will actually be nominated?! 😅 love this video - great analysis of each performance! Couldn't agree more - especially when it comes to Monica and Naomi ❤
The Demi Moore mirror scene was heartbreaking. Surrounded with all the horror in this movie it was that moment of self imposed disgust that was the most horrific. Cinema and acting at its finest.
Absolutely blown away by Naomi Scott!! Genuinely, that level of acting takes an insane amount of skill. Still in shock from her performance. Will be a shame if she doesn’t get even just a nomination!
Naomi Scott was exceptional in Smile 2. She has joined the all time horror movie performances for me and I guarantee you if she gave that exact same performance in a drama, she would be almost certainly a lock to get nominated for Best Actress.
This is why I watch you--your impeccable taste! When I saw Smile 2, Naomi Scott's performance blew me away. It competes with top performances this year, for sure! Thank you for bringing more attention to her performance.
Thank you for appropriately assessing Bill Skarsgard's performance. Just off degree of difficulty and his character's impact on the film, he should be a far bigger player in this award season.
I agree with all of these! I also think Lily Rose Depp and Willa Fitzgerald aren't getting talked about enough for their amazing performances in Nosferatu and Strange Darling respectively, as well as George Mackay's supporting performance in Femme
You know what, Brian? I wouldn't rule out Saoirse Ronan for a nomination at all. Sure, she didn't get in anywhere expect at Bafta but the Academy obviously loves her judging from her past nominations. Also, if the votes are split between Jolie, Kidman, Torres and Anderson, some voters may think ' you know, let's give the nod to Ronan for her amazing job in The Outrun' at the end of the day. And there is the precedent with Javier Bardem from 2011. He only got the Bafta nod and then he was still nominated for the Oscar for Biutiful. So it happens occasionally:) Go, Saoirse!
Great video, Brian! I really love all your videos! I think a really fun video for you to do would be your pics for nominations for the Razzi Awards, which i believe come out the day before the Oscar nominations..
Ralph Fiennes absolutely should be nominated. I can't take Best Actor seriously without him. Brian is letting his meh reaction to "Conclave" influence him here.
Big yes for Naomi Scott! Wow, what a powerhouse performance. With the exception of the opening scene, she was pretty much in every frame of the movie. But like you said, not only does she have horror bias working against her, but sequel bias. Another similarly intense horror performance that should have been recognized by Oscar a few years back was Samara Weaving in Ready or Not. Both Naomi and Samara had to pitch their performances at an 11 for pretty much the entire runtime of their films...no easy feat.
You know it's a big year for female actresses when Nicole Kidman is in her best acted film of her career and isn't going to even get nominated. 😐 If I was nominating: Nicole Kidman - Babygirl Demi Moore - The Substance Fernanda Torres - I Am Still Here Pamela Anderson - The Last Showgirl Amy Adams - Nightbitch
I’m interested how you made a big stink about Saldaña going supporting when she’s really a co-lead, but have no problem pushing Qualley for supporting when she too is definitely co-lead.
There were so many great lead actress performances in horror this year!! I’m incredibly happy Demi Moore is getting the attention she deserves for the Substance, I agree with you that Naomi Scott was impressive in Smile 2, and I really wish Lily Rose Depp was getting more praise for Nosferatu she was incredible!!
I was about to say that I couldn't agree more, but leaving Torres out of the list for best actress is unacceptable to me. I would easely replace either Kidman or Ronan by her.
I'm totally with you on Jesse Plemmons for Civil War. He waltzed in and gave an incredibly memorable performance in about 5m. I just didn't see that same impact from Rossellini. It's crazy.

Why not Conclave as Best Adapted Screenplay? Not the most exciting film of the year, but one category where this successful, Oscar-friendly film could be acknowledged.
I would say that both Babygirl and The Substance are pretty strong on both the premise and the directorial execution of that premise. However, I think that both scripts have some clear flaws (the first suffering from lack of development and the second overstaying its welcome).
I don’t always agree with you, but I always appreciate the depth of your analysis and your explanations for your choices. You’ve done the film season of 2024 very proud.
My picks as an Academy member Actress: Mikey Madison, Daisy Ridely (Young woman and the sea), Demi Moore, Nicloe Kidman, and Cynthia Erivo Actor: Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Hugh Grant, Ralph Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan (A different man) Director: Denis Villeneuve, Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, Coralie Fargeat, and James Mangold Original Screenplay: Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, Coralie Fargeat Adapted Screenplay: Peter Straughan, Denis Villeneuve, James Mangold Picture: Anora, The Brutalist, Dune Part 2, A Complete Unknown, The Substance, Conclave, Wicked, The Wild Robot
Really enjoyed this video! I’m curious if you have an opinion about the use of AI in the brutalist and whether that would hurt its odds at the Oscar’s?
Anora was a film I didn't like at all but I can't deny the amazing performances from both Mark Eidelstein and Karren Karagulian and I'm shocked they're not getting as much attention because they were the true stand out performances for me in that film
I think that The Brutalist is remarkable. Definitely best film, best actor, best director and best cinematographer. Some of those scenes - perhaps especially in the marble quarry- are just so hauntingly beautiful ❤
I never really thought that deep about it but Kieran Culkin probably should be up for lead actor in A Real Pain and not Supporting. But also shouldn't Hugh Grant be a Supporting actor for Heretic
When I saw “The Substance” in the theater last year, two people walked out when Elizabeth (Demi Moore) was putting her makeup on and off. I guess they must of thought that that scene was ridiculous. I enjoyed the movie overall, and everyone else stayed until the film ended.
A Real Pain snubbed but not A Complete Unknown is really surprising but I think original screenplay is really passionate for you and it shows by your choices. Monica Barbero was in Top Gun Maverick so she’s slowly coming up but this was another step in the right direction for her.
I wish more awards voters and critics would be like you -- make picks based on what impressed them the most, instead of basing their decisions on they think others would choose. The awards season would be so much more exciting and more films/performances would get a chance to share the wealth, if we could just do away with this mob-thinking mentality.
I just watched “A real pain” and I totally agree that Kieran is the lead actor, even more than Jesse. He’s incredible but he’s not by any means supporting.
I don't think agree with Eydelstein instead of Borisov. Eydelstein has the flashier performance but he never has to show emotional depth, Borisov shows several kinds of emotions, he looks like the typical henchman but he acts so much with his eyes and with his delivery. I compare his performance to Casey Affleck's in Manchester by the sea, that was very subtle as well.
Was Red Rocket on your Oscar ballot back in 2019 ? That was Sean Bakers last film and I think that film is super underrated. It’s hard not to root for Sean Baker because you can tell he loves what he does and he’s not doing it for fame and none of his films have a big budget or any big actor minus Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project but man does he cast for perfection. He tells these original realistic stories that you can see actually happening and none are boring. He takes simple stories and makes them super entertaining.
Just wondering if you have any thoughts about the stuff coming out that AI was used to enhance Adrien Brody's accent and also for some of the background buildings in the film. I see some people calling for him to be disqualified. Wondering how it affects your view of his performance. Love the videos btw! Just found your channel and I binged a ton of them!
Speaking of horror at the Oscars, I’d like to give my two cents with that. I was glad David Dastmalchian won at Fangoria in 2024 (I voted for him!). In an ideal world, I’d nominate him for a Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award because he WAS Jack Delroy in Late Night With the Devil. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role. I like old TV and I think he was really believable as a ‘70s talk show host. Not only that, but he consistently nails emotion. It never seems like he’s acting, he’s just there existing in those cinematic worlds. The passion is never lost. Dastmalchian is more known as a character actor in secondary roles, but he absolutely nailed his mainstream leading role in Late Night and gave, in my eyes, what is one of the greatest modern horror performances.
how were you not blown away by Cynthia Erivo in Wicked? I am surprised she isn't getting more love for this performance. ( I do understand maybe people are waiting for part two .. but still)
I agree about Saoirse Ronan. She is a brilliant actress. I can not believe she has been forgotten. Months ago everyone was talking about her performance. She should have won an Oscar by now.
Brian Brian!! Thank you for recognizing Bill Skarsgard in my favorite movie of the year "Nosferatu." Such an amazing performance. And Naomi Scott!! Why has she not been in the conversation?! She was terrific!
I don't really get why Paramount did not campaign Naomi Scott in Smile 2, she could've been a dark horse this season, they put all their cards in Gladiator II and not even performing well 😂 but I'm glad she won in the ASTRAs for Best Performance in a Horror/Thriller ❤️
Perhaps they should have named the movie "Smiles"...with the title "Smile 2", that movie was already relegated to the generic horror movie bin on the awards circuit people's minds.
My best actress pics would be Naomi Scott smile 2 Cynthia erivo wicked Fernanda Torres im still here Demi Moore the substance Pamela Anderson the last showgirl
2:08 -- YES! The choice of The Wild Robot for an Adapted Screenplay nomination earns this video an instant Like. Why are Academy voters so quick to ignore the top-notch writing that goes into making a high-quality animated film? I'd love to see it WIN this award, especially if Flow ends up winning Best Animated Feature. (Since the last time I commented, I've actually seen Flow, and it is a very good film and deserves its accolades. However, my preference is still for The Wild Robot.) I haven't seen most of your choices for Best Picture, but of the movies I HAVE seen, these would be my choices: The Wild Robot (yes, Picture, not merely Animated Feature) Wicked Nosferatu Dune Part 2 My Old Ass Flow Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

I definitely pick Demi Moore& Glen Powell for Hit Man but the movie I’d really like to see nominated is Don’t Move and Aubrey Asbele as best actress
If sing sing misses picture, it sadly won’t be replaced by challengers. It’ll be September 5 or nickel boys
yes yes yes on naomi scott!!
Fun fact: the screenplay from I'm Still Here was adapted from a book written by the son of the family being portrayed
Smile 2💜 The Substance ❤️ Wicked 🩷💚 Hard Truths 🖤The Outrun🩵
Oscar's rarely do the right thing
My best actress pics would be
Naomi Scott smile 2
Cynthia erivo wicked
Fernanda Torres im still here
Demi Moore the substance
Pamela Anderson the last showgirl
Nicole Kidman ❤
To me Josh O’ Conner is in a leading role but he did do great
2:08 -- YES! However, my preference is still for The Wild Robot.)
I haven't seen most of your choices for Best Picture, but of the movies I HAVE seen, these would be my choices:
The Wild Robot (yes, Picture, not merely Animated Feature)
Wicked
Nosferatu
Dune Part 2
My Old Ass
Flow
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
