2021 Honda CRF300L Rally Oil Change

- Maintenance is the process of preservation and knowing how to work on your own platforms is modern day survival. Being self-reliant is the goal.
The new 300L has an 8,000 mile oil change interval making it an ideal Moto World Traveler. We expect to change oil once a year as apposed to other bikes 500 to 1000 mile interval.
To put it into perspective the last trip we did in our go-rigs totaled over 2,600 miles. @mike.a.hernandez and son give the Rally it’s first oil change.
I watched this video about 3 times, and then went ahead and changed the oil yesterday on my Rally, I did it with my daughters, and it was amazing shop time with them, and this video really broke down just how simple and easy the oil change actually is. Kudos for making such a great video.

Great to see you teaching your son! My Dad had me helping him when I was that age. We started with me getting to know all the tools and me handing them to him. Then it progressed to me watching him take things apart and I would put them back together. He would just have to go back over the bolts to make sure they were tight. One morning (I think I was 12 or 13) before he went to work, he left the keys to his car, the Haynes manual, and a new water pump. Told me he had faith in me that I could do it. I did and that was one of the proudest moments of my life. It made me happy to see you do that with your son.

Nice job teaching your son and the people watching this. I just got my CRF300L Rally in November but I am going to have to finish the brake in come spring. There is about 10" of snow outside here in central Washington state.

I enjoy it a lot when your song helps you out. These strengths will remain in his memories and for sure will make him so proud of you. I would only suggest, please, to ensure always addressing the different tools you use and the volume of oil required. Following your suggestion, I bought a litter of the same oil and couldn't get a lecture on the level...Then after I figured out that more oil is needed ( 1.8 lts). as I check the volume of the oil I drained from the bike...
PRO TIP: Always looses the filler cap first just in case it won't come off!

I think things like torque specs would be good for the future because turns out my manual doesn't even have torque specs for the drain plug or oil filter cover. Where did you find those specs?
Thanks for sharing! How did the KN-112 oil filter work out for you? I see that RevZilla says that it fits the '21-'23 Rally, but KN recommends the KN-103, lots of conflicting info out there.
Great to see you two enjoying that bike. What brand of "click style" torque wrench are you using? Finally got my Rally, but, we are entering winter up hers in Vermont. Sure looks warm where you are!!

Nice little helper! Did you get the Mosko 40? I couldn’t make out the size. I have the 40L Rackless set and am really struggling with getting all I need in the confines of the panniers. I’ve had to go to a much larger duffle to carry the tent, sleeping bag, pad, poles, and all the items associated with shelter. My clothes, toiletries and kitchen and food filled the side bags. Of course I am downsizing from a GS, but I REALLY skimmed down! I wonder if I would have been better served with the larger Rackless panniers. I’d be interested in seeing how and how much you pack when camping. Would make a useful video!
Thank you! I am running the Reckless 40 also. It is a minimalist setup for sure. I think if I change the rear stinger 8L to the stinger 22L it will be the right size for a 3 day setup. Its designed to manage either size. My next vid will be a loadout vid.
I found the torque specifications for the 12mm oil drain bolt, but not the four 8mm oil filter bolts. Where did you find that?

I never use a torque wrench on simple bolts like the oil drain. I have been an auto mechanic for 40 years, and just do it by feel. I have seen many nuts/bolts stripped by someone with a torque wrench. Often the manual calls for too much torque. Anything with aluminum threads is super easy to strip. If you strip the threads in the aluminum case, it's going to get REAL expensive.
@@geraldscott4302 With your decades of mechanic experience, you have developed a keen sense of "feel" on how much "tight" pressure is enough. Many of us non-mechanics envy you. What is your recommendation to the lay person on how much is enough?
10 or 12 Nm on the oil cover, 24 Nm on the drain plug
why does the 300 rally have a 10000 and the 450L is only 600 to 1000?
If that's a new bike, the valves also need to be checked/adjusted, and they are shim type valves. If you don't know how to do shim valves, have the dealer do it. I recommend Western Honda in Scottsdale. I never use a torque wrench on simple bolts like the oil drain. I have been an auto mechanic for 40 years, and just do it by feel. No, valves do not need checking at 600 miles according to the Honda Maintenance Schedule. And there is a torque spec: 7 ft lbs on the filter cover bolts and 18 ft lbs on the drain bolt. The reason for the torque spec is some owners were commonly breaking the bolt heads by over tightening by feel.
