This is singularly the best kayak angler show on RUclips ever. And by far, anywhere in any kind of media I've ever seen. I've been watching fishing shows all my life as an avid angler. Thanks!!
Yes. Absolutely. He is a class act and does not turn his show into a reality tv moment like the googan squad. This is totally a guy I would want to fish with.
7 Minutes and 44 Seconds worth of fishing...& NO STINKIN' COMMERCIALS! I love it!!!!! Great fishing, and haulin' in the Smallies, when other so-called "Fishermen" would rather be home, where it's nice and warm. You definitely have my respect, Sir!!!!!
Best Smallie fisherman on RUclips, hands down! Keep on treating the fish as well as you do; it is fantastic to see someone not tire the fish out , use a net, release the hook quickly using tools (if necessary) that are near by, and soon after return the fish to the habitat! And, you have consistently caught nice northern fish!
It was a decent day for winter fishing! I caught probably a dozen of those smaller fish, just didn’t put them all in the video. Lost a couple more nice ones too.
A pleasant surprise to see a new video from you this time of year, I figured everything up your way would be froze solid. I hate to rub it in but we went walleye fishing here in east Tennessee last Friday and it was 82 degrees, even on the warm side for us this time of year. Watching your video make me feel like a wimp for only taking the bass boat out this time of year, need to break the kayak out. The wife bought a new Vibe Sea Ghost and she's wanting to try it out so maybe this coming weekend. Thanks for another great video!
He can catch fish, large smallmouth bass in his bathtub been following him for two years and am very impressed by his fishing knowledge gotten obviously by the great bass waters he fishes,my first whopper plopper was because of his vids, very effective here in so Florida, haven't gotten a kayak yet but I'm looking ..very entertaining informative RUclips videos, He's the very best !!! I rehabilitated a knee replacement watching his vids ....keep em coming ...
awesome video!!!! i love fishing for smllies, i wanted to make it down to that spot this winter but i never got the chance. maybe next year, thanks for making me really want another smallie right before the season ends though, i cant wait for may to go after them once again.
When I'm fishing winter - I think its a little warmer than Mid February in your neck of the woods. Another very good no frills yak fishing vid - keep it up
Heck of a way to send off the season, man! One of my main goals with getting a kayak is to be able to find fish in cold water. The main river I fish has a LOT of fast water and inaccessible shorelines. It makes it hard to find wintering holes from the bank and the current makes it sketchy to take my Old Town canoe out alone. I've never been able to find fish before the spring.
I don’t want to make it too easy to find. I was surprised nobody was sitting on that spot when I pulled up. It seems like there’s always somebody parked there lol.
Hey, I was pointed towards your channel by a commenter on one of my own videos. Wow, amazing smallie at 2:54. Holy cow. Nice action and commentary throughout the video, explaining what you are doing. I like it. Subscribed!
Thanks Caleb, I’m glad you enjoy the videos! I still have a ton of awesome footage from last season I’ve been going through lately, plenty to keep me uploading videos every week or two until it warms up enough to get the kayak back out. I’m planning on ice fishing for some catfish on Thursday too so I’m hoping to get a couple of them on the hat cam!
You held your cool even with the shoulder surfers. I’ve had the same thing happen to me on the lower Potomac in the spring during tournament season. I’ll pull a “pig” out and the “pros” will ask if they can fish my spot! Lol Great vid as always.
We all launched together, they wanted to hit a couple other spots first and I went straight to the spot I wanted to spend some time at since we got a late start.
I was going to ask where you found open water but I found where you said there was a power plant upstream. I have been dreaming of open water and floating the Minnesota and Mississippi since it got to cold for this Carolina boy. Great video, going to watch some.
West_Nebraska_Dude when does it get good to fish in West Nebraska? After watching this video I'm not sure how long I can wait. I'm in ND. I have a few days the last week of March and I'm thinking of going for a drive...
the first video I ever watched was of him using the bitsy jig. so I went and bought a few. now that's my go to jig for smallmouth and places with a lot of grass. its just light enough to sit on top of grass and not sink through the grass.
Bitsy bugs AND the spook lure lol. I went out and bought one for myself because of his vids. A week later a friend of mine mentioned "Damn i wanna get one of those spooks...ever watch NDYak fishing guy?"
I totally agree with you, he deserves a big cut. Also for the Whopper Plopper and some Z-Man worms and.....I've purchased just about everything (except the BBZ-1 rat....soon baby, soon!) and all BUT the poopin ploppers have nailed plenty of fish! Still hoping on the WP's... Bucket list purchase is a good steady Yak and Matt's gear.
I had to find a video with snow on the bank to be confident in going out this time of year, the waters below 40 degrees still here in Idaho and I’m dying to get the boat out for some smallies. I wasn’t sure if that was still too cold to catch anything, but I’ll give it a try! I’m new to bass fishing
Dude. Just subscribed. I love how you crush these hogs from that yak. These dudes with the 25k bass boats are making me laugh. I don't have one and was always kinda jealous. So I think I'm buying a yak.
Get a kayak, you'll have a blast! Even on lakes with bass boats around me there's a lot of spots they can't get to and I can. Plus you can get a lot closer to the fish without spooking them in a kayak. I've caught so many bass just having a lure dangling or floating a couple feet from me, I've almost lost rods a couple times because of it!
Cool! I love your videos! I love river smallies and been wanting to see you do a late winter video. I'm in the market for a kayak. I just got into bass fishing a couple years ago. I have always fished paylakes for catfish and never thought bass fishing would be as fun but realized very quickly I LOVE IT!! Thanks for all the great info!! Keep it up. I'd love to see a video about eddys and how to fish them.
It was about 40 degrees out but it didn’t feel too cold after the past couple months of winter. I wear the same light nylon/ polyester water resistant pants I use all summer but I’ll wear some thick polyester fleece long johns under them with some wool socks and warm waterproof winter boots. I mostly avoid anything cotton since it absorbs water so I’ll have a synthetic material base layer up top with a warm polyester fleece mid layer and a North Face thermoball jacket.
What length of rod are you using here? This will be my first season fishing on a kayak. It helps to see how you handle the yak, pole, paddle, and net. I have a 7 foot Lew’s camo rod/reel combo from Bass Pro. I also have a new Pfluger 35 reel that I am looking to mate with a pole. Bitsy Bugs are the ____!
Nice video man! Now I just recently purchased a fishing kayak this Christmas and I can’t wait to get it out on the water this spring. Now as a kayak angler, do you feel that while I’m going to be on a river that having an anchor is necessary? Thanks!
I almost never bring an anchor on the river but it all depends on the kind of fishing you do. I generally like to cover as much area as I can when the water is warmer. Even on this trip I sat and fished this spot for a couple hours but there wasn’t much current where I was sitting so it took very little effort to stay in one spot.
Commenting on a video that is several years old, but I was wondering what part of the Mississippi river you were fishing on? I live in St. Cloud and some of the scenery looked fairly familiar, but you could also have been farther down stream near Monticello or up stream near Little Falls. Take care!!
Okay so I’ve been doing it all wrong, your in Minnesota in February, and I’m in North Carolina in February, and I’m not catching anything. We have strippers that run in schools. But I really enjoy large mouth. I can’t get them to bite here when cold. Again, I’m sure it’s me. Thanks for the show, I need to get back out there. Cheers
What gloves are you using for winter fishing and do you like them? I struggle to find the right type of glove that can keep my hands decently warm and thin enough I can feel the bite.
I think I was wearing my Under Armor jogging gloves here. They aren’t that warm or waterproof but I can work my gear with them on and they have some grip on the palms so my paddle doesn’t slip.
It closes today I believe and re-opens on the second Saturday in May. It’s mostly to protect fish during spawn but it doesn’t make much sense with bass since they don’t spawn here until late May or even early June.
My casting setup I use the most for smallies is a 6’8” M XF St Croix Legend Tournament with a Quantum Smoke reel and 12lb Trilene Sensation. I mostly use that for heavier jigs, the Whopper Plopper and the Reef Runner Cicada.
Yeah the season never closes in ND for bass, walleye, and pike. I’ll be getting out on the Sheyenne or maybe Nelson Lake as soon as we get a day with decent weather. If I wasn’t working tomorrow I’d probably get the kayak out.
My biggest weighed smallmouth was 6-2 at 22.25” although one I caught this spring just shy of 22” might have been heavier. She was 5-13 a couple days later spawned out. Not sure about my overall biggest. I’ve caught catfish, pike, and musky all in the 15-20lb range and a walleye just over 10lb.
Not when the water is that cold lol. I stand and fish in the Tarpon quite a bit during summer though. It’s tough because there’s not much of a spot to put your feet without shifting forward a bit and doing that makes keeping the kayak moving in a straight line difficult.
This is singularly the best kayak angler show on RUclips ever.
And by far, anywhere in any kind of media I've ever seen.
I've been watching fishing shows all my life as an avid angler.
Thanks!!
YES HE RETURNS. You are my absolute favorite kayak angler!! Hoping for TONS of vids in these spring and summer months!
Yes. Absolutely. He is a class act and does not turn his show into a reality tv moment like the googan squad. This is totally a guy I would want to fish with.
clarence bubbins love watching his videos!! Very informative and nice to watch. I learn a lot by watching him!! Always look forward to his videos!!
PaddleADK and his no bs approach to fishing is so refreshing. No give aways. No music. Just fishing.
clarence bubbins absolutely!!

Agreed, he knows his stuff!
Oh yeah! Congrats, Matt! This is the channel I really get happy when the notification pops up!
Hard to believe that he can do the everything by himself - paddle, video, and master fishing all by himself - remarkable.
I realize this video is 2yrs old but it's still fun to watch! ...👍🏻😎🎣
Man you make winter fishing look like prime time autumn fishing. Nice work.
It was a decent day for winter fishing! I caught probably a dozen of those smaller fish, just didn’t put them all in the video. Lost a couple more nice ones too.
Your a true inspiration , make me want to fish all the time because of your videos
I love jigs for smallies. So effective. Great job! Can't wait to go catch some off my kayak this spring.
I can’t get enough of your videos, solid fishing with that jig, cheers from south Florida
Love to watch your video. Learn a lot fishing from you
Awesome video.. glad to see you back in the yak. Looking forward to the warmer weather.
A pleasant surprise to see a new video from you this time of year, I figured everything up your way would be froze solid. Awesome vid! Glad to see u back out on the water!!
Nice video. Love the snowy scene. Kinda cozy looking actually. Nothing like being dressed for it. Gorgeous smallies too.
Love to see ya out catching fish no matter what the conditions, god bless!
Awesome video! Those smallies were beautiful!
Great video once again..Now I want to go fishing ..Thanks Man....
Thanks for sharing your fishing skills!
I enjoy your videos love fishing smallmouth down here in N.C.
Amazing they are that active and you can catch them...Kudos!
Heck of a way to send off the season, man! One of my main goals with getting a kayak is to be able to find fish in cold water. Very nice! Can't wait to bumb into u at that area. I go there every year! And Agree very nice and Bestest mn winter fishing! :)
Dude I just stumbled on to your channel. Now I have a lot of footage to check out. Absolutely Digging it!!!!
Thank you so much for keeping this spot secret man I really appreciate it the pressure on that section of the river is ridiculous
I don’t want to make it too easy to find. I was surprised nobody was sitting on that spot when I pulled up. It seems like there’s always somebody parked there lol.
Beautiful smallies!
Amazing smallies! Nice work!
Hey, I was pointed towards your channel by a commenter on one of my own videos. Wow, amazing smallie at 2:54. Holy cow. Nice action and commentary throughout the video, explaining what you are doing. I like it. Subscribed!
Its insane how excited I get seeing that you uploaded a new video. by far my favorite youtube channel
Thanks Caleb, I’m glad you enjoy the videos! I’m planning on ice fishing for some catfish on Thursday too so I’m hoping to get a couple of them on the hat cam!
Ur the only guy I watch on RUclips bro. Ur a BEAST on the water!!!
I like your vids before even watching it.
OMG , will def be watching this later!!
Awesome vid!💯💪👊LET'S GO!!!
Man, loveing the content!
You held your cool even with the shoulder surfers. I’ve had the same thing happen to me on the lower Potomac in the spring during tournament season. I’ll pull a “pig” out and the “pros” will ask if they can fish my spot! Lol
Great vid as always.
We all launched together, they wanted to hit a couple other spots first and I went straight to the spot I wanted to spend some time at since we got a late start.
Yup, cant wait to get back on the river! Nice video Matt, that first was super fat!
Yes! Finally haha awesome vid 🤘
Mann, this cat can catch a great shot of the space station thru a shot glass!!
Best pickup line to use on women:
"I will take you in the net. Come here girl. Now that's a chunk"
It is like being there!!!
I was going to ask where you found open water but I found where you said there was a power plant upstream. I have been dreaming of open water and floating the Minnesota and Mississippi since it got to cold for this Carolina boy. Great video, going to watch some.
wow.. holy wow.. great fish
You are the man!
awesome video!
Amazing as always, Matt ... You're a brave man to be yaking right now, so I'll just live vicariously through your adventures 👍
West_Nebraska_Dude when does it get good to fish in West Nebraska? After watching this video I'm not sure how long I can wait. I'm in ND. I have a few days the last week of March and I'm thinking of going for a drive...
Jarrod Dale u Nebraska people are lucky smallies and pheasants
That first smally was by far the biggest smallmouth bass I ever saw caught anywhere!
It would definitely be an eye opening experience if you rolled that kayak. Good thing you have a Sit on Top, a dry bag and a life vest on board.
You catch some big fish keep up the videos
Holy smokes!! I now own some bitsy bugs...they owe u a cut 😂
the first video I ever watched was of him using the bitsy jig. so I went and bought a few. now that's my go to jig for smallmouth and places with a lot of grass. its just light enough to sit on top of grass and not sink through the grass.
Bitsy bugs AND the spook lure lol. I went out and bought one for myself because of his vids. A week later a friend of mine mentioned "Damn i wanna get one of those spooks...ever watch NDYak fishing guy?"
A1K3N FISHING that's awesome. He should have a deal with them lol
Sean .D that's awesome!! I bought a spook too because of his vids.
Two casts, two fish. Can not beat that. I'd weather that cold for sure.
Holy shit! It's really a big bass.
Another quality video.
I say that first smallmouth you caught was at least a 5 or 6 pounder!
Kevin Sweet yea that thing was huge he was so calm and nonchalant about it
NDYak..u are the new Al Lindner, in a kayak, get yourself a TV show.
Now that's a nice smallmouth.
I've never seen anyone cast like how he does. It's very interesting, I've been fishing for 15 years never seen anything like that.
Nice bass on the first cast! The others were good too!
You have good ones over there, Matt 🎣👍
Thanks! I’m lucky to have several great river systems around here to fish!
Dude! Way to freakin long since your last post. I love your videos man.
super nice, gotta try me some yak fishing
Dude. Just subscribed. I love how you crush these hogs from that yak. These dudes with the 25k bass boats are making me laugh. I don't have one and was always kinda jealous. So I think I'm buying a yak.

Get the kayak! It’s a blast getting into some of the hard to reach spots and finding fish!
Daaaaamn!
Ahh, what a glorious sight to see, I am totally jealous too lol. Is that up around the cities area? I didn’t think there was any open water right now.
Love your vids. How do you get such clear shots in the water in your videos. Do you use a polarizing filter for your GoPro?
Dope thumbnail dude!
good stuff
Love seeing you out there killing it. Thanks for the video. What is your cold water clothing outfit?
It was about 40 degrees out but it didn’t feel too cold after the past couple months of winter. I wear the same light nylon/ polyester water resistant pants I use all summer but I’ll wear some thick polyester fleece long johns under them with some wool socks and warm waterproof winter boots. I'll take that for the first fish of any day!
You’ve got a fantastic channel going here. Really like the video’s. I gotta ask where’s the dry suite and life vest?
Brotha make sure you wear a PFD so you can keep making these awesome vids!!
What type of paddle? Thanks! Love the vids
Thanks! It’s a Bending Branches Angler Pro. I’ve had it for several years though so I don’t think they do the camo blades any more.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@ndyakangler were you able to paddle upstream on this stretch? Or did you float down
Nice video man! Now I just recently purchased a fishing kayak this Christmas and I can’t wait to get it out on the water this spring. Now as a kayak angler, do you feel that while I’m going to be on a river that having an anchor is necessary? Thanks!

NDYakAngler Ok. Thanks for the advice man!

Take care!!
You can tell by how they curl their tale when out of the water it's cold af out there.
Cheers

I think I was wearing my Under Armor jogging gloves here. They aren’t that warm or waterproof but I can work my gear with them on and they have some grip on the palms so my paddle doesn’t slip.
That first smallie was an absolute toad!
That's the biggest bass I've ever seen.
Taking care of business!!! That's awesome👍😉 when and how long does Bass season shutdown? Never heard of such a thing
It closes today I believe and re-opens on the second Saturday in May. It’s mostly to protect fish during spawn but it doesn’t make much sense with bass since they don’t spawn here until late May or even early June.
I'm from northern Illinois I've never heard of a season opening or closing for any specie of fish???
Awesome video man 👍
rod and reel setup for your casting?
Line setup as well. Gonna try and get on more smallies this year. Thx man
My casting setup I use the most for smallies is a 6’8” M XF St Croix Legend Tournament with a Quantum Smoke reel and 12lb Trilene Sensation. I mostly use that for heavier jigs, the Whopper Plopper and the Reef Runner Cicada.
Thanks for the video!
You fish earlier than may in ND right? I need to find the regulations...
I just get happy when I get notified of your videos.
Yeah the season never closes in ND for bass, walleye, and pike. I’ll be getting out on the Sheyenne or maybe Nelson Lake as soon as we get a day with decent weather. If I wasn’t working tomorrow I’d probably get the kayak out.
The first fish he landed had to be pushing 5 pounds...nice fish.
I don’t know which is your biggest smallie but that seemed like it deemed a measuring haha
Hey Matt,
Why didn’t you weigh or measure that first Bass? It looked like more than five pounds! 👍🏼👍🏼
You may have mentioned it, but what type of rod and line were you using that day? Thanks!
when does bass season usually close for Minnesota? I believe it opens up again in May?
Awesome video. Is that a bitsy bug mini jig or a flip jig?
It’s the mini jig.
Thanks.
Just curious, what is your PB smallmouth? Also PB fish overall? Thanks.
What was the water temp. at? I'm up in Qc and wondering if I should take my Yak out too...
Around 43 degrees F.
Imagine being able to see 7 feet into the Mississippi River🤔
Do you ever stand and fish in the Tarpon 120?
Not when the water is that cold lol. I stand and fish in the Tarpon quite a bit during summer though. It’s tough because there’s not much of a spot to put your feet without shifting forward a bit and doing that makes keeping the kayak moving in a straight line difficult.
