    Catus Maximus for Manly Man of the year haha. I am amazed at all of the different types of tools you have collected over the years. Not only mechanical, but the electrical stuff too. Great video and thanks for posting. Cheers.

    Very impressive collection. The only time I've seen these being used was when I used to visit the engine rooms of oil tankers. Harbor Freight sells a 1" drive set, but I can not comment on their quality since I've never used them. Keep these great videos coming!

    Regarding stores that carry sockets this large, there’s this super cool store in Derby, KS, called the big tool store that has a huge amount of tools. Full selection of SK tools, Knipex, Klein, Channelock, Starrett, and that’s only the hand tools. They have a huge assortment of drills and machining tools as well. I imagine they carry all of this stuff do to the large aerospace industry just a few miles north in Wichita, KS. There’s a place in Wichita, KS called the Yard, that purchases surplus and used tools from these aerospace companies. I bought a pair of NOS US made vise grips that were still in the old cardboard box. Definitely worth the trip if you like tools. Don’t bring the lady if she’ll get tired of standing in each isle for 30 minutes like I did.

    Just watch your video. I started a new job and employer doesn’t supply the larger sockets. I found a set of 1 “ drive impact sockets made by wimmer. Not sure the county of origin, but its not USA, and not for 400 bucks. I agree with many things you spoke about in you video. They do make for great items to have at your disposal around a large press. Anyway, I subscribe to your channel and gonna check it out.
    Later:)

    Snap on impact socket steel is softer than a lot of other brands of impacts and of course softer than chrome socket steel. For this reason the softer snap on impact socket conducts more of the enegy created by the impact tool onto the fastener than say, other impact brands.

    I have the Snapon 1/2" deep impact set. I've replaced all the common sizes multiple because they are softer metal. The drive square rounds out.

    Fun facts. The Truth company in Mankato MN is related to OTC. OTC (Owatonna Tool Company) is in Owatonna MN about 40 miles from Mankato was formed by an engineer from Truth. Truth was later bought by OTC. The Truth name is still around and makes window hardware.

    Harbor Freight makes a pretty good 1"drive socket set. I have a set of those in 12 point chrome. I've used them on a 1" drive impact gun and have had no problems at all. Even heating nuts cherry red and putting the sockets right on and hammering away with the gun with no problem. I know, I know, I should use impact sockets for that kind of thing and I'll get a set sometime but those sockets work much better than I ever thought. I always looked down my nose at Harbor Freight but not any more.

    I was 3rd CAV, I worked on tanks, M1's, Bradley's. 577's, 981's ,88's....Had a shitty command, had to buy my own tools for my walking bag. My tools were POPULAR MECHANICS brand. Thats all I could afford as a E-3. I fought GW-I with a tool bag full of shitty tools.

    Snap on sockets are softer so they dont damage the fastner as much as a hard socket

    That "fluting" is not wear, it is called "flank drive", I believe a Snap On innovation (though almost all manufacturers do it now). The idea is less pressure on the point if the fastener to avoid deforming , the pressure being applied just behind the corners of the nut or bolt. It is not wear, it is the way it was manufactured. Being as I grew up and spent a career on tugboats and ships, most of my 1 inch stuff came from old ships going to scrap, it's mostly Snap On though I am not a Snap On fanatic. There are some Williams and Armstrong. I like my large Armstrong and Craftsman (3/4 drive) ratchets more than my 3/4 and 1 inch Snap On, the Snap On seems cruder, maybe the ratcheting mechanism is just tougher.

    • @CatusMaximus

      I was saying that with fluting (flank drive) or not, when a socket gets worn they all look the same surprisingly.

      Commercially made sockets are available up through about 8 in and you can get larger but they're all made to order beyond that. 4in to 6in are the largest forged sockets all sockets larger than that are machined just too expensive for the forging process and dies for a socket a company may only make a few of the year

  • @InverJaze
    @InverJaze Месяц назад

    Good where rust has taken over. Stuck Sub-frame bolts etc. 1/2 inch just doesn't cut-it.

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  4 года назад +1

      Yes it seems 6in is the limit for forged sockets larger than that and they are just CNC machined because too few are sold to justify the massive and super expensive forging dies as well as huge forging machines to drive them into sockets like that

    What do we call those 12 angle sockets?

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  3 года назад +2

      The number of angles and sockets are known as points so if a socket has 6 internal sides than it is a 6-point if it has 12 internal sides than it is a 12-point if it has eight internal sides and it would be an 8-point Etc

      @@CatusMaximus what are 12 point sockets for?

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  3 года назад +2

      They're just easier to use on six-sided Fastener it's because it's easier to get the socket on when it has more angles also there is 12 sided Fasteners usually with diesel engines or Automotive head bolts
