    Me as a multi artist, i gotta admit than one of the more satisfying artforms, is glass gilding. That first time seeing the transformation from matt to mirror blank is amazing to watch. Nice job buddy!

    I used Bon Ami cake to clean glass and surgical cotton. that Bon Ami lasted 50 years as gold leaf specialist...Great video smiley! I would "lift" leaf by putting tip only on ½ the leaf...but your leaf was really good..perfect & wasn't "cloudy"

    What is the flat tool you use to smooth out the gold after it dried out? I haven’t seen a video that has used it and your gold is so flat without creases it looks brilliant
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge
    I have an old 85 drawer shop cabinet I’m wanting to reverse paint and gold leaf on glass panes that slide into the front of each drawer
    I’m a beginner to signs but have a cutter for a stencils and have done raised gold on vellum on gesso

    Interesting! I’ve only ever used gold leaf on paper, and usually I would only apply size where I wanted the leaf so the loose bits can be brushed off afterwards, as opposed to apply liberally and scrubbing the excess off. Does how do you remove the excess without damaging the paint? Or does it withstand the scrubbing?
    Beautiful result :D

    How long do you recommend to leave the gold before you burnish it? Also, what are the measurements for the water size?

    • @karmicfenix
      @karmicfenix Год назад +1

      I saw someone else say that when it's dry it's best to burnish very softly with cotton, and you know when it's dried when it's shiny and not wrinkly. Then you put a layer of enamel in the back where you want it to stay gold or silver and then you wash off the excess with soapy water and a very soft sponge it will take a while but it's best not to rub it too hard so you don't lift the paint and the gold leaf you want to keep.

    • @karmicfenix
      @karmicfenix Год назад +1

      And for the water size if you use the gelatine that comes in sheets you'll see it has a diamond pattern, I don't remember the website but it said 2 diamonds for every pint of boiled water make sure the gelatine is completely dissolved and not hot when applying it to the glass.

    Could you please clarify the paste you've been used at the beginning?? (I'm struggling with no proper info of gilding technics in my country)
    And also tell me if water gilding (water+glycerine on glass) works only with the genuine gold or it's also possible with imitation gold? (I guess it will oxidize, but maybe there is any chance to make it right)

    • @adamwilliams7268

    • @MateiRadulescu1
      @MateiRadulescu1 3 года назад +2

      @@gildy_pleasures Diana, I read some experts saying that it's hard to achieve with immitation gold, if not impossible. On the other hand, I also saw on Handover's website (I think) that they recommend adding more gelatin than usual for immitation gold. Not sure if you can still get the mirror effect though.

    • @gildy_pleasures
      @gildy_pleasures 3 года назад +12

      @@MateiRadulescu1 thank you so much for the answer!
      For now I can tell that it is possible to do this with imitation gold, I use 2-2.5 more gelatin diamonds, than for the genuine gold. (and probably 3-3.5 times more for aluminium leaf, depending on it's quality). It is still hard to minimise the final gaps between the leafs - they are too thick. The mirror effect is not as clear as with gold, but still quite nice looking.
      To cover the imitation gold from oxidation it's possible to use alkyd paint (and probably it would also work with enamels like 1 Shot, if you have them in your country).
      I hope this info also can be useful for someone who'll come here after me with the same question)
