  • have you ever seen water inside an aquarium heater and wondered if it is broken? I give a full description of why this happens and why it may not be a reason to need a new heater.
    if your heater is broken or you feel it's broken use your better judgment and replace it, I take no responsibility for your actions or your aquariums.
    this video is just a show that manufacturers are aware of the condensation that occurs inside of the aquarium heaters and they say that it is perfectly normal and does not affect the functionality of the heater.

    Finally someone who's explanation makes sense instead of scaring people about explosions and electrocution risks. Indeed, if there is a puddle, then it developed a leak :)

    Thanks for the info, I bought a cheap 300 watt heater for my 75 gallon and it condensed at that upper area of the heater. Panicked for a bit until I did some more research. You’ve quelled my worries for now lol

    I have (had) the same heater. Noticed yesterday that it was about half way FILLED with water. I've had it for a quite a few years, and took it out to gently clean it the other day. A seal somehere must have given because it filled with water, somehow still working though. I took it out and threw it in the trash and I'm using another heater I had on hand. I say if there is ANY water in your heater, it's garbage. Luckily I had no electrocuted fish, but I suspect if the water had gotten any higher in the tube I would have.

      Correct, like I said condensation is normal, accumulated water is not, the reason there was no electricity flowing into your water is because the electrical current wasn't reaching the water in the tank because the heater was only half full

    I want to mention that I'm a big fan of heating the fish room to the proper temperature and not using heaters at all. If you live in a place that is multi-zoned, this is doable. Where I live I have wild temperature swings, and because my apartment unit is not multi-zoned, heaters are a must.

    Just had this it made water live 240v. The heater only has a rubber bung and the adjustment screw is the weak spot I set mine now a fill the cap with super glue to seal it propper and use a controller water in side means heaters seal is comprised and heater must be thrown away and not used

      It all depends on if it's just condensation or if yours is actually leaking water like I talked about in the video, If you're getting a pool of water that is filling up and touching the coils then it's likely broken, If you're just getting condensation on the glass that's probably all it is

      @@TrafishAquatics to be honest they are pretty crap design Iam electrician if I had the hight in my sump I would not fully submerge them rediculas the design of them and as for condensation Iam pretty sure that only happens when water has all ready breached seal

      Condensation is very common and if You watch the whole video I actually show a page on aqueon's website where they say it is possible for condensation to be in the heaters and not to worry about it. The reason we get condensation in heaters sometimes is because of the environment they're manufactured in, many of these heaters are manufactured in places like China and Thailand which have very humid climates, The factories that they're made in are not climate controlled so if on the day they were manufacturing the heater it was very humid, that humid air gets trapped inside of the heater and can't escape, Once that heater is put into an aquarium and turned on you have hot and cold temperatures on the inside and outside which cause condensation of that humid air. It's basically the same thing that happens when you put a cool glass of water on a table on a hot summer day and the outside of the glass sweats from the heat and humidity condensating on the outside of the glass.

    Yeah, we'll agree to disagree. In tank heaters should NOT have condensation inside. If I see that it gets replaced. I always have at least a couple spare heaters. I've had two disasters with heaters malfunctioning and cooking my fish. I don't take any chances. Water inside means something is not right and that heater is getting replaced. I also no longer buy "cheap" non-name brand heaters. I will only buy Eheim Jager, Aqueon Pro, Fluvals, etc. Any of those no name brand crap heaters you get from Amazon or other sites like that are just asking for a disaster to happen. I've never had condensation with an Eheim heater, which is my preferred brand. I have several in my aquariums.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 года назад

      That's perfectly fine! Generally speaking a little bit of condensation inside of a heater is perfectly fine and I've seen it in many of my aqueon heaters as well as eheim jagers. And per aqueon's website that is perfectly normal due to the climate that the heaters are manufactured in. if it's getting a lot of condensation to the point where it's pooling in the bottom then yeah definitely replace it.

    I would highly recommend anyone who questions their aquarium heater's condition and suitability for continued use contact the manufacturer for guidance. Heaters do go bad and ultimately the manufacturer should be the one to make the call. I keep extra heaters on hand in case of failure. It sucks when there's a pandemic and you can't run out and replace a heater when you really really need it, lol!

    water isn't a very good conductor its the minerals in water that conduct. i recently discovered some stray current in one of my tanks so i chkd the heater and it was cracked and completely filled with water. i was horrified but all the fish in there were and still are completely fine

    I havent experienced any water in the heater as of yet thank god,but my only issue well with the eheim is the overheating. Eheim instructs you on how to calibrate but even with consistent calibration it always seems to overheat by 4 or even 6 degrees.In my 40 breeder i have a 150 watt eheim it has finally calibrated to 78 degrees fish are happy.I recently set up a 10 gallon quarantine tank as I want to get new fish and I had a eheim 50 watt in there ive calibrated and resetted to match my main tanks temp and it'll overheat and overheat.So I got a fluval m50 for the 10gallon im gonna try this and see as this QT is only for new fish..I wanna see if it keeps the temp I want.One question can I fully submerge the fluval m50 like the eheims??

      As long as the heater says fully submersible it's fine, 99% of the heaters made today are built this way.

    If you have any water in your heater it’s malfunctioning. Theses heaters should never have that much condensation in them in the environment their in. The temp is the same on the inside and outside for the most part. It’s not unpopular it’s how they function. A submergible piece of electoral equipment is manufactured under a guideline of safety. Water should not be in your heater. If it is there is a chance it can pop. If you find condensation return it. Water and electricity are not friends. I’m sure like me there are people out there that have had a heater pop and kill all your fish. Imagine if your hand was in the aquarium when that happen. Theses days I keep my building at 78 and the majority of the tanks stay there without heaters and the aquarium that need a higher temp like rams discus I use heaters. But electricity and water are a no no. Remember when you are making a video and you present a topic like this saying it’d ok you are presenting yourself as an expert and giving permission you can be healed libel. Be very careful. Yes leaving the factory you can have condensation. After that heater turns on there should never be any condensation in that heater. Temperatures are at equilibrium.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 года назад

      The temperatures will never be at an equalibrium, tanks are kept at about 78-80 degrees and the heaters are heating up to well past that constantly to heat our aquariums, and the moisture will never leave the heater as it is a sealed unit, The manufacturers are aware of this and have even posted on their websites in the FAQ section as shown in the video that this is normal to have happen. if your heater is filling up with water that's a different story.

    • @ricbrunner3880
      @ricbrunner3880 4 года назад

      Trafish Aquatics equilibrium doesn’t mean in perfect union it could mean a few degree variations as the mechanics of physics work. But in order for you to get condensation it would have to be out of equilibrium for an extended time. I can’t get your whole comment but I will tell you you are wrong. And yes you can get condensation from the factory but that air will adjust as the outer temperature changes. You will have a small amount of condensation at first but after the temperature heats up inside the glass the condensation will stop and should never see it again. If someone puts a disclaimer on a product like you say and someone is killed because they used a defective product the manufacturer can be prosecuted.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 года назад

      The definition of equilibrium is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. In order for that to happen they would have to be the same. If aquarium heaters only went up to the same temperature as the water inside the aquarium creating an equilibrium between the aquarium heater as well as the tank water then there would be no way for fish to receive burns from heaters, which does happen, because the heater would not be any hotter than the water that the fish is living in. therefore the heaters are actually getting much much hotter than the actual water temperature within the tank which creates an imbalance in temperature which would allow for condensation to build. Also if you watch the entire video aqueon specifically puts a disclaimer on their website that this is a normal occurrence in aquarium heaters and does not affect the reliability or functionality of their heaters. if they're willing to make that claim on their website then they're willing to be sued over it if they're incorrect.

      Trafish Aquatics Hears the truth. I enjoy your channel. You’re a young guy in the hobby and doing great and enjoying it. I say go for it. I’m an old guy been doing it since the middle 70s. The question of equilibrium was not a question I got wrong on any test in any science class in college. The sun keeps an equilibrium based on the pull of gravity and the push of fusion the push and pull are not always equal but it maintains and equilibrium within a rang of changes. The heater works the same. You set it at 78 the thermostat reach a little higher depending on the manufacturer. Then it shuts off. It drops temp by a few degrees then the thermostat turns it back on. With in that rang moisture shouldn’t develop. This is just a matter of Physics. Nothing else. I don’t have an opinion on it it just is a fact. My concern is how you put this. You are not an electoral engineer you can be held liable for what you’re telling people. You are essentially an aquarium hobbyist. Unless you have a degree in fresh water biology and an engineering degree. You’ve told people it’s ok to use a heater that clearly has moisture in it. If you decide to do that’s it’s on you If you tell others it’s ok can you be sure that they can make that decision for themselves based on your recommendation? It’s not a point of disagreement it’s a point of liability. I’m not telling you this to disprove your point I’m telling you the science of it and the fact that you can be held responsible for what you say in a public forum. You can’t be sure that someone might take your advice but not have the experience and knowledge to make that decision and could possibly make a uneducated decision that leads to injury. Take my advice be very careful how you present you’re opinion. I watched an amplifier repair tech passing himself off as a teacher. He had a student working with him. He had him open up an amp and start to do some basic things. He never told him not to touch the capacitors or transformers. Because he wasn’t a teacher he didn’t understand the importance of knowledge. The kid touched the wrong thing and in a blink of an eye he was dead. An amp doesn’t have to be plugged in to kill it retains a charge. I tell all my students to keep their hands out of the back of the amp till it’s been discharged. Nothing to do with fish but same idea. Do nit get me wrong I think you’re are developing a great show. You’re not so far off on all your information and lost of it’s harmless. But damn someone that doesn’t have the knowledge and understanding might say Trafush said it’s ok that’s why I felt ok with sticking the heater back in when I got knocked off my feet. I bread rare fish. I have to have a disclaimer when shipping and use a proper contract that protects me and the customer. As a nurse I keep liability insurance because I am a professional and can be held liable. And as an amp tech that teaches amp repair I keep insurance for that because this shit can destroy your life.
