      aunt becky but they kind of "broke up" after "Mockingbird" became huge! Harper didn't like being famous or having attention either!

      That's a rumor. Some sources say he helped write it, but usually that was only due to Truman's drunken commentary. If Capote did write it for Ms. Lee, there is no way he would have let it slide by - he very much coveted her winning the Pulitzer, that he would have come out and said it then. I adore Truman's writing, but unfortunately we cannot claim To Kill A Mockingbird among them.

      +Sue Ellen Davis When I think of Capote, the first word that always comes to mind is 'charismatic'. He was a great talker, but he was also a great listener. I can see why society ladies adored him.

      He would be a blast until he makes you an unflattering character in his next novel. He wrote about all his New York friends and exposed their secrets. He didn’t understand why they got mad and refused to speak to him after that.

      A blast to hang out with? Yes. As someone to keep as a good friend? No. He used people. No loyalty or honor. He'd turn on you if he saw it as in his interest to do so. In the end, he was at depth nothing more than a prick.

    He was a Libra. Libras are all about justice. He wanted the glaring truth out. The high society didn't like that when he wanted the truth out, that was their dirty laundry. He wasn't arrogant, he was the real deal. Brave enough to live openly gay at that time was actually very brave. What reporters label with words like ''tragedy'' ''failed'' etc. only words to do their job which is shocking the crowd over and over with big newspaper words, that's all. None of us are black & white, we are all complicated individuals but not as openly as Capote was. ''He looked at me and tears came into his eyes, and put his hand on my arm and he said Al 'n' he said let me go, I want to go.'' - and the ''glaring truth'' went with him. I salute the man! Rest in peace.

    Thanks for a very informative video. In addition to "A Christmas Memory" Capote wrote another story, "A Thanksgiving Visitor," featuring himself as a boy and his friendship with his elderly cousin Sook. This story, like "A Christmas Memory," was made into a TV movie starring Geraldine Page. Late in his life, he also wrote "One Christmas," focusing on his relationship with his father. I discuss this story collection on my channel, Reading Closely.

    I think it’s sad when “real” parents come and take a child from where they are happy, after leaving them for years. This one doesn’t seem to have ended up too bad for him, though.

    I did a book report in high school on "In Cold Blood", which was fresh out at the time.
    It's a shame what happened to this tormented genius. He was a victim of alcoholism, as was was many famous writers including Edgar Allen Poe. Steven King is also an alcoholic, but through support groups such as AA, was able to recover. No such groups existed in the 1840's when Poe was suffering.

      He probably would not have been allowed to.
      If he was drafted all he would've had to do was show up and open his mouth and they'd have sent him home.
      You couldn't be gay back then.

    I don't know which side to take. Hollywood excepted Truman Capote for being gay. Or, Truman Capote backstabbing all his Hollywood friends. He wrote a scathing article about all the drama he heard from his Hollywood friends.

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix 7 лет назад +6

      There was a nonfiction novel by Truman Capote comprised of three chapters previously published in "Esquire" magazine and published posthumously (in 1987 in the United States, in '86 in England) as "Answered Prayers: An Unfinished Novel." But the missing chapters supposedly included one titled "And Audrey Wilder Sang," an account of "the beautiful people of Hollywood and New York... and how they're not so beautiful." To what Capote article about Hollyweird do you refer?
      Andy Warhol did something similar toward the end of his life, which also caused an uproar and, presumably, also the loss of some friends (as had been the case with Capote's tell-all tome). And, as "The Andy Warhol Diaries" didn't have an index, SPY Magazine published its own index to the book, so one could actually find the celebrity references within, such as "Hall, Jerry . . . body odor of," page #, etc. The Index itself was a real hoot!
      Unfortunately, I lent my copy of the Index for "The Warhol Diaries" to a former friend, who never returned it to me. I have had so many bad experiences from loaning books to people I refuse to do it anymore. I advise buying a person a copy of a book as a gift, instead of lending another one's own copy, since my experience is one rarely receives the book back again.
