Selling Children’s Books | Finding the Right Keywords

- Selling Children’s Books can be extremely rewarding. But finding the right keywords, that’s where things can get tricky. Especially when running Amazon Ads. Today I’m going to show you the tricks I use for finding the right keywords so stick around.
A viewer recently commented and asked, “when advertising children’s books the keywords seem to be quite limited since we’re all writing in the same genre. Because of this we’ll all end up using the same generic terms. Can you show us how to do find more specific keywords?”
Great question, and I’m going to try my best.
First off, I don’t want to give some hypothetical book to use for our example. I wanted to pick a children’s picture book that many viewers would be familiar with. So I picked the book that I honestly feel is the best example of just an all around well designed story. That story is, Goldilocks and the three bears.
This is actually probably the best example of a perfectly designed book. Not just a picture book. If you’d like to see a video where I explain how well constructed goldilocks is and how I feel it is the perfect overall story, put hashtag tellme in the comments.
In the meantime, I’m going to flip the screen around and show you how I would find keywords to use for Amazon Ads specifically for this book.

Great video again, Keith! Thanks so much for the helpful content. I have a question regarding my book. I recently published it and started running ads. While I’m getting impressions, I'm not receiving any clicks. I’ve seen on RUclips that some people are suggesting the issue could be a bad cover. However, during a 3-day free promotion, I received 13 five-star reviews, and everyone mentioned that they loved the cover.
Do you have any advice on what might be going wrong with my book ads? I've been running the ads for about a week and a half.
The cover is usually the issue. While it may be an amazing cover, if it doesn’t stop the scroll then people can’t click.
In your ads dashboard there’s an option to customize your columns. If you click on that and select the Views Impressions option, that can really help illuminate whether the cover is the issue.
A Viewed impression is when someone sees your ad for at least 2 seconds. These are people who actually stopped and saw your ad.
@@KeithWheelerBooks I see that all four campaigns have over 1,200 impressions, but no viewable impressions yet. Since it's only been 3-4 days since I started these campaigns, I think it's best to wait about two weeks to get a clearer picture of how the ads are performing.
Agreed! You should give it at least a week and wait til you have at least 1000 impressions on a given campaign before you make any changes.
@@KeithWheelerBooks okay thank you so much 😊
You’re quite welcome!
Awesome! Thank you, Keith! #TellMe

Hi... Just bumped into your video. Pls I need keyword suggestions for children's literature.
Keyword research goes beyond the general genre of children’s books. To increase your books chances of discoverability, you want to focus on finding profitable keywords that are the most relevant to your particular book.
I have multiple videos where I show you how I o do keyword research, both manually as well as with software. The video may be about keyword research for puzzle books or some other type of book, but the methodology is the exact same.
I hope this helps.
Great video! Have you tried Publisher Rocket for your keywords for ads?
Thanks. Yes, I use PublisherRocket quite a bit for keywords for ads.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Exactly! Really amazing software :)

Great tips as always Keith!
Thanks for the continued support.
Once you've started an ad can you add new keywords to it? Or can you only pause the ones you already have? I ask because I learned so much from this video alone a day after launching an ad and I'd love to add to it what I learned from this video.
Yes you can add words to an already existing campaign.
When cutting and pasting keywords and such, are you using Notepad? Would Word or Pages not do? I know how different text softwares vary when you start cutting and pasting into them, etc.
Great question. I’m a computer programmer, by trade, so I always copy/paste from a text editor, like notepad. This way it strips all of the extraneous code that may otherwise be embedded in other doc files. (Ie. MS typically stores don’t size, color, etc.) None of which I want or need when copying things over.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Ok, great. So you cut and paste into Notepad, leave it for the time, and then re-cut and paste it once you need it?
Exactly.
Thanks, coach. You've been a lot of help!
Glad I could help! 👍
Thank you…
You are very welcome! 😊👍
Does amazon allow authors to use similar book titles in their 7 keywords section for their book? Or are the titles only allowed when placing amazon ads? Thanks.
Excellent question! Titles and author names are not allowed on KDPs backend keywords only on Amazon ads keywords.
#tellme also thanks for your helpful video

You seriously have to say smash because every other youtuber does? Such sheep we are...
Heck I’ve said give it a Smashy-Smashy, drop-kick that thumbs up button, hit that thumbs up an odd number of times, etc.
I try to mix things up a bit!
But how exactly does one smash a like button? With a hammer? That would certainly damage the phone.
Press aggressively with your thumb upon the screen.
Not necessary. A gentle tap will suffice. See my point?
Oh I totally see your point. I was being hyperbolic.
