- Are you looking to sell more books? Have you been thinking about running book ads but have no clue where to start? Well, you’re in luck because we’re about to start the next Saturday Series all about running ads to books. Today, we’re going to cover how to run amazon ads. So, stick around:
A while back I did an entire series on running AMS ads. While most of the data within that series is still relevant, I wanted to start this sell more books series with an updated intro to amazon ads, since there are a few things that have changed within the system.
Now, I wanted to start the sell more books series with Amazon ads for 3 main reasons:
1. They’re super simple to create a campaign
2. You can start campaigns dirt cheap(as little as $1 a day)
3. The audience is a warm audience, meaning they’re already on Amazon to buy
One thing that should be noted is that since nothing is guaranteed when it comes to running ads, you should never budget money that you cannot afford to lose. Also, as you probably know, KDP pays you 60 days out from the time of a sale, where as, Amazon Ads take their money out on the next billing cycle.
Ok, enough disclaimer crap, let’s get started:
I know that was a lot of info and you’re probably a bit overwhelmed. That’s ok and perfectly normal. Take it slow. As with all of the ad platforms I’m going to cover in this sell more books series, there’s going to be a lot of trial and error. What works for one author, may not work for another. In fact, what works for one book, may not work for another. So, don’t be afraid to experiment, remember, you can always pause ads and keywords/products if they’re not being profitable enough for you.
Now that you know how to run amazon ads, you may be wondering how to understand the resulting data that you get. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Click on this video right here and I’ll show you how to read the numbers and what those numbers mean to help you sell more books. Or you can check out this video that youtube says you’ll like.

I'm on it, let's go...can't wait to binge this series this weekend 🙏🏽 TY
Great! Let me know your honest thoughts.
Amazingly helpful! Just started this series and plan to watch them straight through today.
Glad you’re enjoying them! 😊👍
I'm so glad you posted this. Stay safe.🤸♀️
Thank you. You as well!
I love this video. Super useful and clear information, as usual. Keep it up.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Good stuff Keith. Thanks so much.
You’re very welcome!
Haven't had great success with AZ ads in the past but great info here!
Yeah, they can get frustrating. But once they’re dialed in, they can be a game changer.
Have you found luck with any other ad platform?
Great video, thanks!
You’re quite welcome! 😊👍
Thanks for this!!!
You’re very welcome.
Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Good stuff, can't wait to try it!!
Thanks. I can’t wait to hear your results.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Got my 1st click today! Ratio is 50:1. Might seem like a small thing, & I probably need to tweak the campaign, but it was still exciting!!
Got it, thanks! Do you have a video on getting the Amazon Advertising certifications?
Unfortunately, I have not done a video on that, as of yet.
Good job 💐💐💐💐💐💐
Thank you! I always try to provide useful content. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hi Keith, your videos have been instrumental as I go through the process of publishing my first book. You have made advertising so clear and accessible. This question is unrelated to ads: I thought I heard there is a certain link you should copy when linking to your amazon book page, and that linking the wrong one can get you booted from Amazon. Is this the case and would you mind clarifying? Thanks!
Technically, yes that is true, though most people won’t actually get booted. The key is to use the short link that ends with your isbn or asin. If you do a search for your book on Amazon, find it and click on it, the url will have the entire path, including search terms and time stamps.
So, if you send out that link, Amazon will see what looks like a bunch of people clicking the exact same link(including time stamps) which is a huge red flag.
Thank you so much, this was very helpful. It is frustrating that I can not see my ad when I hit ad preview. Am I doing something wrong?
When you hit preview, you should see a pop up with a sample of what the ad will look like. If you’re not seeing that, you may have a pop up blocker turned on in your browser.
Is using the same keywords for all 3 match types at the same time beneficial? Other videos I have watched say leave automatic alone for low income books because of cost and the words they choose?
It really depends on the book. Typically, I stay away from automatic ads, but that’s mainly because I’m a control freak. I want control of my keywords, etc. As for using all 3 match types, I usually start with all 3 and then possibly pause the broad ones if they’re costing me too much.
I hope this helps.
Trying to get to the right website your own on cell phone cant....
Question, do you upload your keywords in an excel or csv file?
I usually upload them manually directly into the keyword box.
Hi, I have a question as I am a newby. I just did an amazon ad campaign and waiting to hear if it was approved. I had not thought of this until after I submitted it, but I selected for the campaign to start today, but it won’t be approved until after today. What happens? Does amazon still end the ad the day you selected it to end? I selected it to run for 5 days just to test it to make sure I’m on the right track since it’s my first book and first ad. Next time I now know to not have the ad to start for a few days out of me submitting it.
That shouldn't be an issue. Once it's approved it'll go live. Don't be surprised if you don't see a lot of impressions, as many times it takes a week or so for you to start seeing some real momentum with your ads. But it sounds like you handled it the way I did when I first started out. Dip your toes in so you don't get in over your head. Kudos and best of luck!
Hi. I'm not a author per se, I'm just trying to market/sell my notebook journals. How would the strategy for running an ad campaign change? Does it make sense to run ads?
You can absolutely run ads to journals, but I would stick with running Amazon Ads. They have the warmest audience, easiest interface to use and cheapest budget requirements.(from my experience)
Im going to watch your first video on this...
😊👍
I am doomed. So if I have ten cents set and a daily budget of $5 - that's 50 clicks a day? After 50 clicks the ad disappears? I am miserable that I can write and draw but the business side destroys me - I can't focus and hold it all together. Very frustrating. I envy those who can create AND market their work.
28th OMS you’re not doomed. It’s a lot more complex than that. First, remember that impressions are free. That means that people will see your book without you paying a penny. You only get charged when they click. If you get 50 clicks and no sales, then you’ll probably want to re-address your book description because the person thinks they want your book and click on the ad but something on the description page isn’t closing the sale.
You can make a good number of sales(depending on the book, niche and keywords) just with 10 cent bids and a $5 a day budget.
Help how do you stop or pause the ads? It's hard to find on my phone so I'll have to do on my pc. I didn't do keywords I will do and get again doing keyword ls but not until like mid fall or mid or end of sprig or fall.
Glad you figured this out.
@@KeithWheelerBooks me too it went to $62 so I'm guessing from the $57 maybe
Could be
Hi Keith, Do you need to do separate ads for different covers with the same interior?
That’s up to you. When you run an ad, typically, it’ll only point to 1 product. So if you want to advertise 2 books, you’ll need to run separate ads. But typically, if the interiors are the same, I usually only run ads to one of them.
@@KeithWheelerBooks okay, thank you 😊 and thanks for responding so quickly.
You’re very welcome!
Ok I found it! It was harder to find on cell phone rather than p.c after $57, I think that's enough. I say keywords would have been better....so with status paused they can't take anymore $ correct? I could ask company through email but nah they should have a # instead like kdp and Amazon do. If it wasn't for you I would have to wait a long time prbly for a response
The dashboard isn’t live, so a few more register in the dashboard tomorrow for what came in today, but after that, if you have the campaign paused, you should not be charged.
@@KeithWheelerBooks ok gotcha thanks
😊👍
Hello Keith hope everything is good on your side? Well in SA not going anywhere with this covid and mostly at home. I got myself blocked on draft2digital due to some books that had repeated contend and I discovered that to late. Anyhow Is it posible to stick to a fixed amount as low as let's say $30 for amazon adds? I'm still stuck with books that does not sell at all and curently thinking of running adds but it sounds so expensive
Setting a budget of $30 is very very doable. Now when you set a budget on Amazon ads they only allow for daily budget, that said, I have never had Amazon come anywhere near reaching my daily budget. But the important thing is to make sure that you check your analytics at least once every other day.
@@KeithWheelerBooks thanks keith appreciated
You’re very welcome! 👍
Hey Keith love your videos. I have a question: I set my daily budget at $5/day and .20/ea. When I type in the common keywords, I see authors books on the search result that are sponsored. But when I put in my more detailed keywords I am bidding on...none of the results are sponsored, so I am no where to be found. I emailed KDP and they told me to increase my bid amount??? What, I am not getting any impressions at all for certain keyword...what does that have to do with my click budget, am I bidding on impressions, or clicks?
Excellent question!
It's a bit more complex than what I can type in a comment field, but the simple answer is...You're bidding for impressions, but paying for clicks.
Basically, Amazon uses the bid you enter in(in addition to other things like relevancy) to determine what ads to show(aka Impressions). When someone sees your ad and CLICKS, then you're charged for that click.
I hope this helps.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Thanx, now I get, you are a genius my friend!
So glad I could help.
thank you, you shot my mind!
I will publish 20 books at once. Should I have a campaign for each book? How do I link the campaign to my book?
I definitely would start small and only run 1 campaign. Once you get familiar with everything, then you can branch out and do more. While I sometimes run different types of ads for the same book, I never run ads for more than one book in a series at a time.
As for how to link your book to the ad, it’s actually done in the process of setting up your ad.
I hope this helps.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Fantastic, thank you.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Perhaps instead of a campaign for each book, I add the title of the second book on the campaign of the first book...
If it’s a series, Amazon should link them on Amazon, so once they finish reading one, they’ll be offered the second.
When trying to sign up an advertising account, it wants to charge me $40 a month to have an advertising account. Is that normal? I just want to run an ad to see how things go. How do I create an advertising account without paying $40 a month just to see if the ads will work? I am not a KDP or KU author. I am a wide publisher who just wants to generate more traffic to my books on amazon
No you should not have to pay $40 a month to run ads
I recently purchased publisher rocket to make my life easier as an author, but I have been really frustrated with it. I am doing Amazon ads now and I am putting in my keywords. I am adding suggested books and authors that are similar to my book…but they are rejected. The red letters come up saying 0 keywords are excepted. My book is a children’s book. Why are some book titles and author excepted that are listed on publisher rocket and other are not? When a book title and author is excepted…should I click broad, phrase or exact? Thank You!
I’m not sure why they’re being flagged. I suggest reaching out to support. They’re typically very responsive.
I suggest selecting with broad, phrase and exact to start and then you can deselect as results start coming in.
@@KeithWheelerBooks thank you! I appreciate your feedback!
Happy to help! 😊👍
Damn - I was getting all excited about doing this...but, I have gone with a hybrid publisher to do all the background work for the 2nd edition of my existing book, which means that my KDP page isn't connected to the new edition, hence not being able to run an add. Is there any way around this please? Thanks.
You should be able to message KDP and ask them to link the books.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Many thanks, Keith. I am also unable to change/update my bank details. KDP seem difficult to get hold of. I hope they can manage to sort both of these.
You should be able to email them through the contact us option.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Ah, lovely. Many thanks, Keith.
My pleasure
Keith, any quick advice on Google ads for children's fiction books? Is it worth it? TIA.
My suggestion is to go with platform based ads(ie Amazon ads) it’s much easier to sell someone when they’re already on a platform to buy. I personally do not use Google ads for my books.
That said, if you do decide to go that route, I’d love to hear how it goes.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Will do. I think that Dale mentioned it briefly in one of his videos. But the more I think about it, Amazon is probably the go-to route for authors. Thanks, amigo.
My pleasure. It is the 600lb gorilla in the marketplace. Not the only game in town, but definitely the first place I suggest going.
How does Amazon charge for your ads? Do they deduct it from your bank account every time someone clicks on your ad or is it a monthly bill?
thanks
It’s a monthly bill that auto withdraws from the bank account you link to it.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Hi, thanks for replying to a question that I now realise was clear in your video. A couple of other things if you don't mind simple questions. Can you just link your financial information to a credit card rather than full bank account? Maybe a better idea given internet hacking. Also, can all the formatting for a book be done in Microsoft than uploaded, or do you need to use Kindle's suite of tools. Thanks.
No worries at all. I don’t mind answering questions at all. To the best of my knowledge, since they’re utilizing direct deposit, it requires banking info, not just a card. As to your other question, yes, you can use MS Word or any other text editing software to create your manuscript.
I was excited to take all your information that I learned on your tutorial and get to work on my campaign on Amazon ads for my children’s book. I bought publisher rocket and went to work! I found a little over 200 keywords and I was hopefully that everything would go smoothly. After a week, I have 955 impressions and no clicks. I believe I need to increase my bids, but the keywords that I have impressions on, I can read the whole phrase I typed in, but the ones that have no impressions…have only a couple of letters showing. So, I can’t tell what the whole phrase is. I am sure it is something simple to fix this so I can see the whole phrase. I don’t want to increase a bid not knowing which one I am doing. Can you tell me how I can see the complete keyword? Any advice? The keyword I have the most impressions on is the word “book.” I guess that is just to broad and I should not use keywords like that. I have started with a campaign of only a $1 a day which I know is very little. I started my bid at 10 cents. I knew going in that this would be a learning adventure, but I am hoping to go forward quickly! I appreciate any advice! Thank You!
The algorithm cares about relevance. So you want words that are relevant to your book. You can update your bids a little, but if you’re getting impressions it means the bids are winning as is. No clicks typically means that the ad copy isn’t speaking to the customer.
As for seeing more of the text on the screen, you can try to stretch the width of the cell. If that doesn’t work, you can try deselecting some of the columns shown on the screen. (Click on customize columns, on the top-right side of the page)
Do you have a tutorial on how to write to best ad copy for Amazon ads. I am also questioning if I need to change my book cover. I illustrated the book as well and I noticed that the cover shows up darker than I would like on a thumbnail. I think I need to lightening it up a bit. Thank you for your help! I really appreciate that you take the time to answer questions!
I don’t have a video on ad copy, but the key is to do 2 things.
1. Make your copy honest to your book (you don’t want people to expect 1 thing, then click on your ad and find out your book is something else)
2. Speak to their emotions. People buy on emotion, so make your copy speak to their emotions. (Shock, happiness, nostalgia, sadness, etc.)
Also, feel free to join my Facebook group, Self-Publishing Today, and remember to answer all 3 questions.
Once in the group, you can share the cover image of your book and ask for feedback. Same thing with ad copy. I answer questions in there all the time, as well as all the other great members of the group.
Thank you for answering! I just joined your Facebook group and answered the questions! I look forward to belong to this group. It will be a great encouragement to me and hopefully, I can be an encouragement to others!
I’m excited to have you in the group!
I'm starting this tonight due to inflation.....I been wanting to do this for a while
It’s never too late to start!
@@KeithWheelerBooks what does this mean? ad campaign has been moderated.??? Is that approved or no
It’s their way of saying they’ve reviewed it. Below that sentence it should say whether or not your ad has been approved.
@@KeithWheelerBooks it don't say approved no where but this
Below ads are eligible to be served on Amazon : with title of ...
I plan to get both of my books on Barnes and noble and see if it gets accepted for a book signing later down the road
So I'm deciding to be lazy and do automatic targeting and next time if it dont do good do the manual. 200 keywords is a lot ha. Im in college again for another degree and work so I'm like wow 200 gesh...haha
I completely understand the appeal of automatic targeting. Just understand that it may cost you more per click and even if it’s not successful, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn something from it.
I just don’t want people to run automated target ads, not get sales and then quit and say Amazon Ads don’t work. Ads DO work, you just may need to try a couple tweaks before you find the sweet spot for your audience.
@@KeithWheelerBooks right I understand. I was going to try the manual one after before I give up on it. With the 200 keywords
Makes complete sense!
Huh. I guess I should be doing custom text. I skip it normally.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Will do.
Kevin Maguire sounds good
lastly they have a new category called sponsored brands..
Yeah they’re always adding and tweaking the options in Amazon Ads. Believe it or not, some Amazon ad platforms have the option for video ads, but that’s not yet available for KDP.
