Contrary to stereotypes and myths (It's about the alleged charges of Polish cavalrymen with sabers and lances on German tanks, which are a product of Goebbels' propaganda).
Polish cavalrymen (chaulevers, uhlans and mounted riflemen) did not fight like medieval knights, attacking on horseback with a lance in their hand, but rather like motorized infantry. "Cavalry moves on horseback, fights on foot" - said the pre-war instruction. Horses were primarily used for fast movement, providing maneuverability unavailable to infantry units. At the same time, they allowed to operate where the lack of roads prevented the use of cars.
Equipped with anti-tank weapons, fighting based on their own fortifications, the Polish cavalry destroyed about 100 German armored vehicles in just one day. And it made the German division, after losing over 1,000 men, incapable of action for the next two days.
    As for the 7TP tank
The Polish army in 1939 used primarily a single-turret version equipped with a 37 mm bofors gun (100+ tanks)
There were no more than 25 tanks in the twin-turret version.

    • @Meitti

Not to mention early WW2 tanks were lackluster in quality. The most common anti-tank weapons used in Winter-War were a combo of jamming a wooden log on the tracks and Molotov Cocktail to the exhaust behind the tank. Winter War was also where the nickname "Molotov Cocktail" came from.

And to add to this great comment: Almost every single country used horses, germans weren't as motorized as they wanted people to think. Only country to come even close to that was the US.

During Polish-Soviet war of 1920 Poles used French FT-17 Renault tanks. They proved to be slow and not as mobile/versatile as cavalry in the vast eastern front. That was one of the reasons Polish Army command thought cavalry was the answer for fast-moving mobile fronts and genuinely thought tanks had their place at static fronts of WW1, not in the mobile and vast plains of Poland/Russia.

Fun fact: great timing, tomorrow is Polish Armed Forces Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, "The Miracle over Vistula", from Polish-Soviet war of 1920. :)
But I must say: incredible ahistorical stereotypes. Such charges never had place, and the cavalry was equipped with modern anti-tank rifles and were used as a highly mobile infantry.

Love the Bolt Action Series! Please more of it. As a Side Note for Joe: Despite the Heroic stand of the Polish Army, Polish Cavalry deliberatly charging against German tanks is somwhat of a debunked urban myth. As a Polish historian asked about it once put it: Do you really think we would have been that reckless or stupid? Btw Poland wasnt the only Faction using Cavalry after WW1. Russian Army used them during the whole WW2 as recon and flanking units and even the Germans used Cavalry like the infamous SS Florian Geyer Division against Partisans in the rear.

That is actually half truth, they flanked artillery stands with cavalry and there were about 2 or 3 tanks with resting crews. Attack was succesful, and then it grown into a myth that they defeated tanks with horses

    • @tkg__
      @tkg__ 11 месяцев назад +2

@@andrzejmisiewicz85 there were two high-profile cases of Polish cavalry charges in WW2. One against sleeping artillery group which was taken by surprise and routed, the second was the only time cavalry actually fought armoured vehicles directly: it was to cover a retreat for an infantry squad, it wasn't actual combat.
Cavalry was equipped with long-barelled anti-tank rifles and they were used in a similar way as modern mobile mechanised infantry squads: moving to where they are needed quickly through hard terrain, dismounting, fighting and then leaving.

In Hearts of Iron II, those polish calvary are very deadly. Historically though it was the polish armor division that nearly stopped the blitz dead in its tracks. in an act of desparation, the German commander of an antiair artillery unit ordered the fuses remove from their flak rounds and had his AA guns shoot the tanks instead of the aircraft. The 88s proved very effective as AntiArmor artillery and spent the remainder of the war operating in a dual role fighting planes and tanks alike. Without the 88s though the war may have ended a hell of a lot sooner 🤪

It's a bit more lopsided than the actual situation when you don't stick to the historical periods of equipment. A stug 33 in 1939 Warsaw is like taking a US M60 Tank to the Battle of Okinawa. Rather favors the Germans here. It's things like this that make me say people have turned Bolt Action into WW2 themed 40k.

I like how you are introducing verious tabletop games Joe! I'd recommend Chain of Command - smaller scale than in Bolt Action so even easier to collect, but you can do some really interesting actions such as throwing granades to open topped vehicles or panic a tank with machine gun fire which is especially interesting in early war scenarios. There is also a very cool way snipers work.
In general Chain of Command is very rewarding, though the guys who are designing it are just a small team so not that many choices when it comes to armies. In my local club we are collecting forces from 1st US Infantry Division (me), 1st Polish Armoured Division as well as some German paratroopers, panzergrenadiers, volksgrenadiers and US paratroopers and the cost of all of those forces is much lower than in Bolt Action. There are some interesting options for early war and your Polish force should work pretty well in ChoC, though there is a large number of infantry both sides have to field - literally a platoon large + chosen support.
You might want to cut the pennants of the Polish cavalry - these were much, much smaller and in general lances were rarely used as POL cavalry was usually fighting dismounted.
There were no cavalry charges against tanks in 1939 - neither by the Poles or Germans, or Soviets. I could only find such examples in the eastern front from 1941 and 1942. I am not even 50% certain, but US cavalry in the Philippines could charge Japanese troops supported by tanks, but as I said I am not sure.
This means that likely only the Soviet cavalry was charging German tank units in 1941 when desperately attempting to slow down German attack at Moscow and likely during the infamous, bloody Operation Mars in 1942. Could happen later by accident because there were thousands of cavalrymen used by both sides in the eastern front.
At least the following countries were using horse cavalry units of some size during the 2nd WW:
Poland, Germany, Soviet Union, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece, Yugloslavia, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Finland, Bulgaria as well as United States of America in 1941-42 in the Philippines. In USA in 1930s there were even ideas about truck transported horse cavalry, which was explained that horses are still necessary in large parts of USA without roads. Chieftain made a very good video about US tank doctrine which also covers cavalry.
The 7TP with 2 turrets were used in small numbers in defense of Warsaw (8th-28th September), but majority was in reserve units and tanks schools, so likely fought only against the Soviets when they invaded. But I agree that it is quite cool and I would be tempted to use it myself - many early war tanks are at least interesting to collect.
Autocannon armed Polish tankettes appeared in small numbers because domestic design of autocannons took too much time - the lesson was learnt so AA artillery and AT guns were both license produced Bofors. Smaller and poorer countries rarely could risk long and uncertain process of designing all of their weapons, especially if facing rapidly growing hostile armies.
Kedyw was the elite unit of the largest part of the Polish resistence - the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) during the occupation of Poland.
In 1939 Home/National Guard units were called Obrona Narodowa (ON) - mostly infantry with very few machine guns and some light mortars.
In 1939 the fate of Poland was pretty much sealed from the beginning - Nazi Germany was the 2nd industial power in the world after USA and spent c. 1000 times what Poland did on its military in the 1930s. Of course that couldn't work in any normal economy so German currency was essentially worthless in 1939, but was enough for early German conquests - it was enough to fight all Poland, France and UK at the same time. This was still a temporary advantage which could only work if UK surrendered or negotiated a peace agreement or the invasion of the Soviet Union worked before USA entered the war.
The important thing Poland did in 1939 was that it refused Hitler and because UK and France honoured agreements with Poland so the war started before Germany was ready for a larger conflict.
Sometimes you have to say no even if you face almost a certain defeat at the beginning of the war so that you win in the end.

All right, people in the comments already did a lot of that, but here's one more:
Contrary to the popular myth of German Steel Machine, they relied on the horse logistics throughout the whole war, to the point that in 1939 a cavalry 'battle' occurred between Germans and Poles. Poles won, although the situation was dire due to historical reasons - Polish horses were always tightly bred with steppe ones, resulting in a smaller but resilient animal, that had stamina to charge straight from march and do so multiple times, Polish sources even 'mocked' western ones often calling them fat as a result. But in that particular fight those fat horses managed to push Polish uhlans into the river and Poles won only because their commander teamed up with his soldier to cut down German leader, managing to force a rout. Later that day, pushing on with charge they came under heavy fire and many of them died.
Most balls-to-the-walls action happened under Wólka Węglowa, where around 1000 Polish cavalrymen broke into a charge to break out of encirclement and into Warsaw to continue fighting. After dismantling enemy infantry positions they went under artillery barrage at full speed and rode between armoured cars and tanks showering them with fire, amusing Italian journalist who was present on the German side at the time and suffering 'only' 20% casualties, half of it dead. The source is obviously biased, but one of the survivors claimed in his diary that Germans were so embarrassed by this, that they interrogated POWs from that day on whether they partook in the charge and executed them on spot if they did.
All in all, in campaign of 1939 Polish Army performed 16 confirmed charges, most of them attacks of opportunities and not a hopeless last ride against an enemy, some ending tragically due to poor recon or unfavorable circumstances (like Husynne, in which combined forces including mounted police (!) managed to crush Soviet infantry just to fall under indiscriminate fire of tanks following them across the hill, Soviet tankist present in his memoirs mentions with amusement how Poles decided to charge their machines with swords drawn).

The Stug 33 B was used from 1942 to late 1944. So not just Stalingrad. The first 12 was sent there to clear out the factory district and strong points in other parts of the city during the battle. Then the last 12 was sent and used by the 22nd Panzer division on the eastern front. The last report about them being used was mid Oct 1944. The reason so few was made was due to the fact the Stug III was so important that the Germans couldn't afford to stop production to build these specialist types in the assembly lines. So that was why and how the Brummbar was brought out and made since it used the Pz IV chassis. I really do need to bring out my Sturmtiger that I have painted up as the paintbrush ambush one that the Americans captured in 1945.
But I got all the assault gun heavies that Germany used, Stug 33B, Brummbar, Sturmtiger, Jagdpanther, and Jagdtiger. The only one that I don't own is an early short barrel 75mm Stug III for my Germans.

The true issue were the numbers and the decision to export most of the new stuff to Yugoslavia leaving only older models and in small numbers.

When the Germans invaded in WWII, they just backed into their house and said we were just leaving. Then never left.
