I've been playing drums and producing music wayyyy before you were born. I was playing drums in a band even when this song was released. This song blew our minds as drummers. We all attempted it, but NONE of us could get it exactly like the record. YOU sir just demonstrated to me what I previously thought was impossible. This is THE BEST version I have ever seen from a live drummer. WOW!!!

Just from and for my own personal ears, I never liked the clap and the organ. Right now though, I'm going to search this one on the tube and lean back into those old glory days of the funk!

Finally! Somebody got it right! The high-hat and snare parts are what makes it so hard to play. And even the very best drummers stumble on this beat. They usually play the snare on the 2 and 4 (even Jellybean does this), and NEVER play the high hat right. But YOU and John Blackwell nailed it! I can play it correctly also with claps, but RUclips removed my video. Great job and thanks for the excellent breakdown.

Wow I'm very impressed. I've seen many people play this pattern, many quite well, and some with actually very good takes on it. Don't think I've ever heard anyone play it that well. Something always seems to be a little off. Like others, I was starting to think it really couldn't be reproduced right live. From what I understand, Prince preferred usually the Linn Drum because of drummers tendency to improvise and not stay totally in the pocket throughout the entire song. And what people unfamiliar with the song may not realize, is that it's a very long song. So even when it seems like some are actually really on it, it seems they can never hold the intricate pattern for long.

You Sir are in a lane by yourself and now that you've broke it down I'm sure that others will follow your lead and take it to another level. They keep crediting a Dave for programming the original drum beat. Read Morris Day's book ("Princely Funk") and the "Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions". Prince used to come up with stuff, then SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO DO IT, then throw their name in to take credit for his work because he didn't want to be seen as doing too much. He often went uncredited for his instrumental work (for example, guitar on Madonna's 🎶Like a Prayer🎶). He made up an entire fake producer named Jamie Starr who he credited with his Time work. It's best to ask the people who WERE ACTUALLY IN THE STUDIO WITH HIM.
Early 80's: Rick James even said that he purposely stole Prince's pre-programmed drums and used them for his concert (then returned them with a thank you note 😂) as revenge for how Prince "stole" his dance moves. He knows who programmed Prince's drums! Read his autobiography.

This is the best I've ever heard it. Nice job dude. Didnt think this could ever be done by a human (not a machine). Props.

I knew it. I knew that it wasn't humanly possibly to execute this groove accurately. But you seem to play this beat live much better than Jelly Johnson himself. Thank you.
