I love Land Rovers Defenders. I crashed one in Germany when I was in the military. I backed it into a parked 4 ton Bedford truck parked on a tank run test road whilst on guard duty. I thought I was going to jail for life, but on colonels orders I was marched in and when asked to explain myself I was nervous…and said well Sir the Bedford was painted camouflaged I never saw it. He looked up over his glasses and laughed, he followed up by saying I wonder if they can take a 110 defender and shorten it to a 90 series 😂😂😂 I lost a weeks pay and was restricted to barracks for a month 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ was a fair deal considering the damage I did to it. Enjoy the trip, I drove these land rovers in the Deserts, Canada, America, Germany, Bosnia and Northern Ireland. They will always have a special place in my heart 👍👍👍
They are nasty. Utterly useless in any military scenario other than basic base duties. There’s a VERY good reason why every terrorist group insists that the CIA supply them with Toyotas - they work. Having served in Southern Africa when the local terrs (also involved in a Rockefeller/CIA proxy war) were in the habit of planting Russian land mines on roads and tracks. In such situations I would rather be on foot or a decent bike. Too many lads lost legs and more driving those useless Land Rovers in the bush. And this is before we address their total inability to stop even a stray 7.62 short round with their aluminium panels. Ludicrous. But it’s easy to see why these Starbucks addicted hipsters have got into them. They fulfil their need to pose in the latest trendy ‘retro’ toys - whilst everyone who has ever been off-road knows that a Land Cruiser is vastly superior. The only thing worse than a Land Rover is a VW Beetle or an upturned French pram! Peace
Freddie, the green vehicle you thought might have been a 1950s Toyota, is actually a 1950s Willys-Overland, kind of the original SUV. So you got the decade right! Willys was a company that made many of the jeeps for the U.S. armed forces during WW2, so it has that jeep heritage. Willy also made a convertible version, the Jeepster, which has the same jeep-style front end as the Overland. I hope this helps. Keep up the excellent work. Liked and subscribed. 👍
Iconic British vehicle , like an E-type or a Bonny! I grew up in the countryside with them trundling down the lanes and over the fields and its the only vehicle from my childhood that still looks modern and fresh today! Amazing. I can remember my dad navigating the narrow lanes, trying to avoid crashing into them being 'enthusiastically' driven by the offspring of the local landed gentry ...it was a terrifying trip to school most mornings!! Mind you ... As I found out years later the ones from the 60's were horrible to drive any distance !
Yup. A staple of rural British life. But, as an ex Landy owner and someone who lives in a farming community in Yorkshire...I know of 3 Landys locally. A Defender & 2 Series (one a show diva and one I assume is a non-running project) All the farmers these days drive pick-ups. And their wives drive those "Range Rovers" that Posh Spice designed. They take the kids 200 yards to the village school in them. Land Rover got left behind & vastly over priced.
About 20yrs ago I spent a month delivering Defenders to Felixstowe Docks averaging 2 a day they were all heading out to Egypt I think & all sand coloured! Loved driving them!
That very vehicle is on their site for £44,995.00 ... for a 2008 defender. And they charge a fortune for "seat covers" that looks like someone threw a loose sack over them ...
A most excellent example. Buy now before the kids come along! A good investment and tow/travel vehicle for the Bonnie. Enjoy. Looking forward to your opinion. I loved mine. Safe, happy travels 👍
Brilliant, compared to the fiat, filming you sat inside the Landy looked like you were in someone’s front room😂 Your enthusiasm and excitement was like watching a small child opening presents on Christmas Day😊
I drive automatic well, but can not imagine doing it with my left hand, LOL. So happy Nene Overland wanted to partner with you and let you use this for the trip. Dream come true!!!
Very few Defenders here in the USA. The only comparison would be Jeep, but the Defender has a very British appeal. Can’t wait to see where you go in it!
I've been very fortunate to own a Classic1985 LWB Range Rover and a Military 110 Defender of similar year , I enjoyed them for many many years. But as my mechanic said to me, "you'll love them until you hate them". Singularly the most unreliable and expensive vehicles to run and maintain I have ever owned. But what what memories. Today I drive a 2010 Nissan Exterra and I have to say it's a relief to own something that run and runs and runs and is just as good off road and furthermore a fraction of the cost. I totally get the Landy thing but I doubt I will ever own one again but by 'eck they sure are things of utilitarian beauty. Nice review Freddie, love your channel.
I was about 15 or 16 when my brother and I piled into the back of a long wheelbase canvas covered Landy for a journey through Wales to a holiday home near Bangor. Lying in the back of the vehicle with the roof rolled back admiring the scenery in the sunshine listening to the cricket on Radio 3. This was before seatbelts where mandatory! Later that holiday a rear half shaft broke and our driver replaced it himself! I can understand and enjoy your excitement. Rather more expensive than the Fiat to run though. Have fun, you guys are always up to something interesting!
Ahhh you have an eagle eye Simon, because I was totally oblivious to this! The sound of a 3.5 V8 is very appealing and now I know this, I think it may be my favourite too!🤩
Indeed. I had a 50th v8 for a while in the late 2000's. Did 30k miles in it and took all around Europe. So thirsty, well under 15 MPG! But smooth and comfortable. Now have a 110 2.2 TDCI and, to be honest, it's smoother, faster, quieter and I don't regret the change. But I'm so glad I had the opportunity to own the 50th.
Brilliant marketing tactic by Nene Overland letting you have the LR 110 for a couple of weeks. I would definitely stake some of my hard-earned cash on you owning one before the year's out. Hope you and Monika have a brilliant time with the LR in Cornwall.
whenever i see a landrover enthusiast i,m always reminded of the aussie saying " if you want to go into the bush get a landrover , if you want to come out again get a toyota ! "
I love landies, weird fact being they are one of the cars that have the highest percentage of those produced still running on the roads today. Pity its not summer and you could peel the roof off! Enjoy.
When we lived in Sweden about 14 years ago I nearly bought a new Defender 110 like the silver one that was in the background of your video. My wife loved it, but found it difficult to get into the cab as it was too tall for her. As it was going to be her main transport we didn’t buy it, and instead bought another Land Rover model. I still regret it to this day!!. Enjoy your Cornwall trip.
You mentioned the radio in your rundown. It’s a Pioneer SPH-10BT. I have one in my C5 Corvette. Pioneer has an app for it called Smart Sync. The radio has a pull out on the top edge with a built in swivel phone clamp. When used with the app it creates a kind of mini infotainment system, with mapping and audio controls for the sound system. Enjoy the Defender, it looks phenomenal.
I live in the village next to Nene Overland we have a lovely Coffee shop in the village a stones throw from these guys. Try when you come back. The owner of this fine establishment goes in there.
Oh, Freddy 👍! This is amazing! Sometimes, my choices in life become more apparent when seen from a different perspective. I chose the 1784 trim in my Tundra, and I now realize the love of the brown leather interior has more to do with my youthful, lusting after Defenders than identifying as a cowboy 🤠 .
The 2.4 diesel was one of the best engines to go in a Defender - probably because Land Rover had nothing to do with it. The vehicle you've been loaned is luxury compared to the Series Land Rovers it evolved from. The big storage box between driver and passenger is a legacy of the third seat that used to occupy the space. I always liked the three-seat layout, particularly when changing into second or fourth gear if there was an attractive woman sitting next to me (too much information probably). You mentioned celebrities sniffing around Nene. I always used to fill my Sprinter up at North Oxford Services because I could stare at the bikes at BMW Motorrad across the forecourt. One day David Beckham pulled up in a navy blue LWB station wagon. He was in his full "Duke of Norfolk" outfit and was very "look at me, look at me". I obviously ignored him, but must admit I liked his Land Rover. I've only got one tip for your Cornwall trip - never try to turn that thing around in a country lane, you'll be going forwards and backwards till Xmas.
A new bike and Land Rover at the same time, will be a hard pull between which to drive, thanks for the insight to Nene Overland, never seen inside their place before, it certainly is a cool place. Have a happy two weeks, had the pleasure to drive a new 2007 Air Con Defender hand top back in the day with wait for it, electric windows! Those small little comfort made all the difference. It will be interesting to see how noisy a soft top is, I wonder do they add any extra soundproofing in the upgrade? Hope you and Monika have a great time driving around. My memory was of how many people would stop, smile and chat when they saw a Defender, and that in Ireland where they are not as big as the UK.
I think it’s genuinely neck and neck with which draws more attention (Dax vs Defender). Switching from one to the other feels like a dream because they’re such polar opposites. I think there’s no extra sound proofing in the Defender- it is loud😆 I must get in the swing of waving at other Defenders!
love Defenders..they are nearly impossible to find older ones in the US...and if you do find one...be prepared with a defibrillator at the ready...lol....my face would be cramping up from the constant smile riding around in that thing..LOL...
I’ve heard they’re also much more expensive in the US. It’s apparently becoming quite big business shipping 30year and older ones over to the US🇺🇸 It’s true- I have a constant pain in my face from a ridiculous grin!😆
@@FreddieDobbs I did own a 1973 International Harvester Scout...it was as close to a defender as could be found here...3 speed...lock in hubs for 4 wheel drive..you could climb a wall with that thing in 4 low..LOL..it was a tank..lol...
Dude! That place is crazy cool! The 110 is one of my favorites and nearly impossible to get here in the US. So….If I ever win the lottery, I’m heading straight to Nene Overland!!
Hi Freddie To see that 4x4 really made me smile, amazing memories. One of my uncles in the 60s had one like the 4x4 next to the Land Rover ? Camel Trophy, it was popular in Argentina in the 60s and 70s. We called it " Estanciera ". from Ika . I am sure there are a lot of them still driven in Argentina. Nice video, like always . G
Genuine enthusiasm. Just like a twelve year old boy getting a new bicycle. You certainly have enough room for luggage. I will be keen to hear your thoughts on the driving noise level with the canvas roof on the motorway. Living the dream.
Hi Freddie, a little bit of history, in the 1940s a Spitfire on a training mission crashed in the field opposite where you did the walk around, there’s a little memorial to remember the young pilot
I had a 110CSW once. Loved it. Hated it too: it was determined to financially destroy me 🤣 Also, used to go to Cornwall every summer as a kid so looking forward to the next couple of vids. Enjoy yourselves
Ahhhh Duncan, your Defender experience has described my fears! But every time I look at the Land Rover here in Cornwall, I get one step closer to a loan application!
@@FreddieDobbs ahhh yes, you're in trouble all right Freddie. Do NOT fall under its spell!!! (This is very very serious - I'd have another in a heartbeat & I know so much better!) Noooooo.....they crimp aluminium door skins direct onto a steel door frame (or vice-vera) whatever - physics happens - the germs of corrosion from this unholy matrimony started before they even left the assembly line. And be honest with yourself Freddie - all the way to Cornwall you had nowhere to put your right arm & shoulder, did you? Reverse Tardis - huge on the outside but tiny on the inside. And that old ad campaign? "95% of Land Rovers ever built are still on the road" Yup. In the same way as Trigger's broom (Fools & Horses ref). No, you MUST resist this urge with every fibre of your being or else you'll wake up in 10 years to find you have no money, Monika has left you & you've become powerfully built around the middle, developed a liking for camouflage clothing & playing in the mud, destroying green lanes with other fat, middle-aged divorcees. Whilst listening to Lynard Skynard. Just...NO!
Awesome collection Freddie. Luv the video. The green jeep you think is a Toyota is actually a Willys Station Wagon from the 50s and 60s, powered by an F4-134 Hurricane petrol engine.
It suits you, Freddie. I used to drive these in the emergency services years ago. One the worst storms in years and I spent an entire night shift towing people out of ditches and rescuing people from floods. They are fearless machines! I assume by now you have discovered the appalling turning circle? Part of its charm. Very cool colour scheme, exactly what I'd go for if I had a spare 60k or whatever these things cost now! Now go and get it muddy 😉
What a job- rescuing people in a Defender!😃🙌🏻 I’ve now discovered the turning circle issue after trying to park on a very tight country lane. It was a 25 point parking manoeuvre and I’ve lost three years of my life due to the stress and anxiety of the experience!
When we lived abroad in West Africa we owned a Landrover 110 County that was able to fly along the aweful intercity roads. The only downside was the rate of wear of the suspension bushes.
My brother had a series 2 that we used to bolt apart in the summer and drive around SAS style, no doors, folded down windshield etc, rather more basic than your one. You will need deeper pockets for fuel than the little Fiat.
Hi , fun and games coming our way over the next 14 days . No wonder they lent it to you both , never mind the width , look at my style .😀🙃😉👍👍❤They both love it and think of the saving as now sleeping in , a tin shed . Magic
Q: Would you like to borrow a Defender? A: Twist my rubber arm. Do they still make the boxy Defenders in the UK? The ones they sell in Canada are more styled like the Ranger Rover Evoque or have a Kia Soul look about them (too fragile). Nene's inventory all look pristine. Early 2000's boxy Defenders Defenders here sell anywhere from GBP 35 - 45K . . . about the same price as a brand new Jeep Wrangler. Just checked Nene's website - they are very similar prices in the UK - maybe a bit less and they look to be in better condition. When I lived in the UK my parents bought a 1960's model in around 1976 . . . it was very "agricultural" on the inside.
Freddie nice video mate. I am glad to see the 110 has a Ford Transit engine in. I have driven the Paris Dakar many years ago 86 !! In a Defender 110. normal / standerd engine wasnt very good, with overheating and gear-box problems, and just way to slow!! Lol 😁😉😊
@@FreddieDobbs The Disco is slighty better...I was an Instructor for Camel Trophy doing off road driving training. Now my passion has gone back to motorcycles again. I am riding every day in the snow and ice here in Little old Denmark. Passion is king !! Love your bike videos Freddie. I would love to join you for a ride sometime. 🏍😃😊
We used to have a big red 110 which my wife loved. Certainly a go anywhere do anything machine. Enjoy Cornwall, it’s a bit cold down here, but not minus temperatures thankfully. I’m in South East Cornwall near Looe, so if you’re in the area, ping me on Messenger, and you can stop in for some tea, meet the doggies, and see the bike collection.
Just watching this after getting off the phone with the garage (unfortunately not Nene overland but a specialist local to me) about my 110. She should be done in a couple of weeks and I couldn't be more excited! She has been in for nearly a complete rebuild and has been away since mid August. This video has made me even more excited to get her back. I am sure you will enjoy your time with this beast. Oh and I just thought I would add, it is pronounced Nen, rather than Neen. Take it from a local lol.
Lol Freddie, you are funny. It will be interesting to see your opinion of the Defender AFTER you have driven the 390miles to Cornwall, a drive I am familiar with as my Mother still lives in Peterborough. I guess you are seeing your folks again, but you have any spare time, be nice to have a chat at one of the biker haunts in this neck of the woods.
I have never seen so many Land Rovers in my life. But they did have one good old green 1950s Jeep. I don’t know what they called that model. But they made a convertible just like that called a Jeepster. Those Land Rovers are just like Jeeps they don’t change much over the years. They just keep going. That Rover suits you Freddie, but I you should have tried to get a pickup model so you could have put the Triumph in the back. I hope you take that top off and go four wheeling.
I was thinking about how perfect a pick up would be with the Bonneville in the back! I want to try some off roading but honestly, I’m too scared I’ll damage it😆
There is a charm in classic off-roaders that nothing else can quite meet. Should be some great videos coming up. And my guess for the new bike is Honda Super Cub.
If you come up this way again Freddie the sportsbike shop in Boston is well worth a visit for all things clothing a stunning selection of gear at great prices
Great video and what a place. I can see you were in heaven. You could do with one without all the seats so you can put your Bonnie in the back. Looking forward to see what this bike is waiting for you. I've just bought a project 1974/5 Honda CB125, can't wait to get started on it.
Great video. So many Defenders to choose from 👍. You should do the Land Rover Experience Day at Eastnor Castle, it’s amazing what they can do off road, I was lucky enough to do it when I was working at a LR dealer. Yes that was a real fire, a Charnwood Cove 3 12kw beast 👍
Straight onto auto trader now like I do after watching so many of your videos. Looking forward to seeing the 125 footage next, also I'm sure you mentioned recently that you are going to go to India. Can't wait for that as I'm sure we'll see some royal Enfield s. That defender they gave you looked perfect although the blue one in the workshop looked great too. 👍👏👏
@@FreddieDobbs because the internet is so accessible by phone, I was swapping my car's and bikes 3 times a year like an addiction. I've started looking on Rightmove at property which is great because swapping house's isn't so easy. Plus you definitely need to run that past the Mrs 😂. Always thought those little Dax monkey bike things are cool! Bet you could easily fit a tuned up monkey bike engine in one 👍
My gf and I got a Landy from Nene. Ex display model of theirs. 7" lift big tyres TVR blue paint and ragtop. Absolutely beautiful but needed a clutch every year! Sold just before they went up in price - doh

Gotta be my favourite 4x4 the old defenders such a classic no nonsense look , loved the vid thank you for sharing 👍🏻
How fantastic! Well fine Nene! If I buy one I’ll come to you!
I think there’s no extra sound proofing in the Defender- it is loud😆
I must get in the swing of waving at other Defenders!
Awesome video and awesome content can’t wait for the next video Thank’s Freddie and Monika
I love defenders i had an old one about 20 years ago good vehicles,
Finally onto the Beast - enjoy the Defender!
Thank you so much, I love it!!💪🏼
Expensive, slow, cumbersome but brilliant ! Living the dream,eh, Freddie ?
True, true and true!😆
love Defenders..they are nearly impossible to find older ones in the US...and if you do find one...be prepared with a defibrillator at the ready...lol....my face would be cramping up from the constant smile riding around in that thing..LOL...
I’ve heard they’re also much more expensive in the US. It’s apparently becoming quite big business shipping 30year and older ones over to the US🇺🇸
It’s true- I have a constant pain in my face from a ridiculous grin!😆
@@FreddieDobbs I did own a 1973 International Harvester Scout...it was as close to a defender as could be found here...3 speed...lock in hubs for 4 wheel drive..you could climb a wall with that thing in 4 low..LOL..it was a tank..lol...
Dude! That place is crazy cool! The 110 is one of my favorites and nearly impossible to get here in the US. So….If I ever win the lottery, I’m heading straight to Nene Overland!!
Truly characterful vehicles and so beautifully restored. Terrific👍
Hi Freddie
To see that 4x4 really made me smile, amazing memories.
G
What a fantastic insight, thank you for sharing this, Guille. Sending all my best over in Argentina🙂👋🇦🇷
That thing is stunning! Enjoy it.
I look forward to your first breakdown video soon …. 🤣🤣
Got that right, he should have swapped for the Jeep
This is pure schadenfreude!🤣
It really is Glamping Central, a dream haunt for 'Landy' luvvies.
Nice Landie, you'll love it, but get used to that turning circle on them Cornish roads. Have a great trip
Genuine enthusiasm. Just like a twelve year old boy getting a new bicycle. You certainly have enough room for luggage. I will be keen to hear your thoughts on the driving noise level with the canvas roof on the motorway. Living the dream.
I can’t lie- it isn’t quiet. Loud talking (at least) is required at motorway speed😆
Great content Freddie and Monika!
Thanks Stuart🙂
will pop over there with my SA V8 110 as it needs some changes for 2024 present. Thanks for the vid.
Rover paradise! Great place to dream. Nice job.
I'm doing my CBT and will be buying my first bike in the spring so I'm really looking forward to your next video. Keep the great vids coming Freddie
Gorgeous looking vehicle!
Great vehicles , that does suit you Freddie 👍
Top pick that Landy. well done, enjoy.
Hi Freddie, a little bit of history, in the 1940s a Spitfire on a training mission crashed in the field opposite where you did the walk around, there’s a little memorial to remember the young pilot
Oh wow- it’s the first time I ever visited that spot, but I’ll remember this if I ever go back. Thank you
I had a 110CSW once.
(This is very very serious - I'd have another in a heartbeat & I know so much better!)
Noooooo.....they crimp aluminium door skins direct onto a steel door frame (or vice-vera) whatever - physics happens - the germs of corrosion from this unholy matrimony started before they even left the assembly line.
Just...NO!
#mega excited to see the next episodes......drove the V8 190 in my time in Oman! Enjoy....
6:39 it’s an old Jeep Willys Wagon. Another excellent video
The green vehicle is a early 1950s Willy's panel jeep station wagon. We own a 1949 Willy's Jeepster.
Morning Freddie. 🏴
Hello Mike🙂
Impeccable vibes on the video
Appreciate it🙂🙌🏻
Awesome collection Freddie. Luv the video. The green jeep you think is a Toyota is actually a Willys Station Wagon from the 50s and 60s, powered by an F4-134 Hurricane petrol engine.
Good luck on some of those tiny Cornish roads!
What a job- rescuing people in a Defender!😃🙌🏻
I’ve now discovered the turning circle issue after trying to park on a very tight country lane. It was a 25 point parking manoeuvre and I’ve lost three years of my life due to the stress and anxiety of the experience!
@@FreddieDobbs hahaha I've been there!
If you're "down West" in Cornwall the drive from Lands End to St Ives along the B3306 won't disappoint
I LOVE the sound of this!! And yes- significantly deeper pockets needed (I’ve already learnt this on the drive to Cornwall😆💷)
Hi , fun and games coming our way over the next 14 days . No wonder they lent it to you both , never mind the width , look at my style .😀🙃😉👍👍❤They both love it and think of the saving as now sleeping in , a tin shed . Magic
I was thinking I may have to move into the Defender full time😆⛺️
Q: Would you like to borrow a Defender?
Now that's what heaven looks like for me, omg so much beautiful defenders
I like the defender liked the idea of owning one a few years ago. Interesting to see how you get on with it.👍👍
Freddie nice video mate. I am glad to see the 110 has a Ford Transit engine in. I have driven the Paris Dakar many years ago 86 !! In a Defender 110. normal / standerd engine wasnt very good, with overheating and gear-box problems, and just way to slow!! Lol 😁😉😊
Appreciate it🙂
Very interesting to hear of your thoughts on the engine/gearbox- I’ve heard similar. What an experience to driven on the Dakar!!😃
Thank you so much🫖🙂
Any wait to see you on a Honda Daz! And those Land Rovers were utterly sublime.
Toy & Candy for Mister Dobbs 🎉
Dangerous rent I guess 😅
Have a wonderful 2 weeks travel in this superb vehicle 🤙🏻✨
Thank you so much!🙂
Just watching this after getting off the phone with the garage (unfortunately not Nene overland but a specialist local to me) about my 110.
My thoughts too!
The green and cream ‘Toyota’ is a Willy’s Jeep early to mid fifties I think.
I think it's a Jeep Wagoneer.
Ahhhh thank you both- I was completely wrong😳
Looks like a willys Overland to me.
I’ve spent the past two days on Auto Trader now. I must try and limit my daily Land Rover searches!😆
And I thought I was a bit quaint liking these things... I'm not alone there, am I?...
Cheers.
You are definitely not alone!🙂🖤
1950 s American Jeep Freddie 😊😊😊😊
Great video as always mate, but you just reminded me why I moved away! The winter weather, whether you're cycling or motorbiking it is just bitter!
