  • Crossbow Appreciation Month continues with comments from viewers and my thoughts about them.
I am not sponsored by anyone! But I do share what I like and what I don't like. And I like a good coupon code to save a few bucks as much as you do (see below). My "perfect" crossbow setup these days includes:
Killer Instinct SWAT X1 (starting 2023)
Burris Oracle X Scope (since 2022)
AJ's Custom Arrows, LLC (since 2024, Reaper FOC shafts, 8.35 GPI (40 Ton Carbon) with 110 grain inserts and Vanetec Swift 2.25" vanes on the SWAT X1 and Reaper 9.6 GPI shafts (24 Ton Carbon) with 110 grain inserts and Black Sky vanes on Bunjie, Jr.
Bunjie and I also recommend the following, 100% of time:
Burt Coyote Lumenoks (since 2012 or so) (save 10% on lumenok.com with coupon code BUNJIE )
Swhacker #251 3" cutting diameter crossbow broadheads (for our last 20 or 30 deer/hogs and woodchucks). Swhacker stopped production of the #251 in 2023 but never fear: the #243 is the same exact item, although a different color. You're good to use that one :)
Dragon Claw arrows from Wyvern Creations (good outfit, been buying different gear there for years, these arrows were great in the SWAT X1 throughout the 2023-4 Crossbow Seasons!)
A.J.'s Custom Arrows, LLC (since 2024, see below)
    ajscustomarrows@gmail.com
    (203) 528-8736
    / ajscustomarrows
Check out the Gear Page on our website, deathbybunjie.com. Again, I am not sponsored by anyone! But you can see what gear I like and don't like on that site. And if you buy from Amazon.com using one of those links, Death by Bunjie receives a small referral fee and you DO NOT pay more! How cool is that?
Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie.
Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows), a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at around 400 fps! This crossbow helped expand the Kingdom fo Bunjie by introducing me to compound crossbows and showing me they're nothing to be feared, and also helped me get my first deer on public ground. This crossbow also inspired the "Rule of 400" that I talk about from time to time: a crossbow that can shoot a 400 grain arrow at 400 feet per second is the definition of a modern crossbow--producing over .7 slugs of momentum and over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy, the envy of the archery world.
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
Bunjie and I have written two books: The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method ( amzn.to/3zJbAI0 ) and The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story ( amzn.to/2Peq4aC ), both available on Amazon.com with those links.
Check out the Death by Bunjie podcast, Talking with Bunjie! It's available on deathbybunjie.com or on the podcast app of your choice.
    Facebook much? deathbybunjie
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, Yankee Militia. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
If you've read this far, then there is only one thing left to say:
    All Hail Bunjie!

I love this video. I didn’t comment on the last one because I really appreciate the help you’ve given me related to crossbow hunting. I was thinking though, the modern crossbow is EXPENSIVE. I could afford it, but many people can’t.
The options you talk about do help people and stagnation wouldn’t. Thanks. I’ll always be a fan.

I agree with you, Rich. There are plenty of crossbows out there from many companies or brands that are comparable to the Swat X1 and Tenpoint technologies. These other brands are cheaper, but still have the capability to shoot 400 fps with a 400grn bolt. With a less expensive brand you could have the money to pay for a better scope. Another possibility is to keep your current crossbow and spring for a better scope like the Burris Oracle, that is an option I'm thinking about right now. Making an older crossbow that you like and trust better seems like a true improvement on equipment and a good way to grow as an archer.

I agree with the past sentiments - best crossbow channel on the internet. Love your attitude. Love your tendency to be humble and admit to your successes and mistakes and I've learned a lot from you! And as far as "your base," I spent a small fortune of my crossbow and scope. Your "base" includes guys like me who spent a fortune, AND guys who buy something off the shelf at Walmarts. None of us are better or worse than the other. We are all in this together.

Rich watching your videos over the years, I personally have learned so much about crossbows and new equipment out there. Yes when I started my bolts were stock bolts. Then you had a video on zombie slayers which I upgrade too. Then you mentioned custom arrows, and at 64 and crossbow hunting for many years I felt it was time to go custom from AJs custom arrows. Which by the way are the most accurate I’ve ever shot. The bottom line is by you staying current, you have kept me interested in your videos. For what’s new and what works. Thank you for all you’ve done and are doing to promote crossbow hunting.

Hi Rich, I really enjoy your videos and totally respect the way you approach your gear selection. By the way, I made use of your discount codes last year at Lumenok and Swhacker, thank you. After using the same crossbow for 10 seasons I look forward to using my new Swat X1 this fall. I did save my money for a few months to purchase the Swat X1 but I believe it is a good value for the money. Thanks for the Crossbow Appreciation Month videos!

Rich - I like that you try out new gear. I value your opinion, so I use it to determine my next gear. I took up crossbow hunting a few years ago. I didn’t know if I’d like it, so I went a little cheaper and bought a Center Point Mercenary 390. It’s been a great crossbow and I’ve taken many deer with it. I’ve never had anyone tell me I should go more expensive, nor have I ever thought anyone’s ever talked down to me, including you. I see us all as a crossbow-hunting community regardless of whether you “drive a Porsche or a Hyundai”, so to speak. Happy Hunting, friend!

I will never get tired of hunting the same deer out of the same tree stands with the same crossbow. I've been doing it so long that I can't even remember when I bought my Ten Point Blazer. The Blazer is so reliable and accurate. I'm almost 72 and I do not want one of these new tech Crossbows. I watch your videos about these new CB's but I know I'll never purchase one. Sometimes I really like the 400fps other tines I like the much slower and simpler excal. I think it's great that OB still gets use even though you have much better performing gear. You're doing great keep it up.

Rich I think you switched from rifles to crossbows because you wanted a challenge and Bunjie fulfilled that need for a challenge. As a former compound bow hunter, I could appreciate the struggles you went through and enjoyed watching your adventures. Modern scopes and faster crossbows take some of the challenges away, but I think some people would enjoy watching you overcome some of the challenges with technique rather than technology. For example, limiting yourself to 20 yard shots and closer. At the other end of the spectrum say compound bows vs traditional bows, I have friends who would like me use a trad bow to take a deer. I am not willing to always get within 10 yards to take a deer with a trad bow. My guess is you would not be willing to limit yourself using the older equipment. I think your goal seems to be to make crossbow hunting easier and more accessible and I thing that is the best way to go. I enjoyed your discussion...

As a new fan of death by bunjie and also a person who that will be a 1st time crossbow hunter this upcoming season, I truly appreciate the years of knowledge and evolution you are bestowing upon your viewers. I was given an older horton crossbow a few years ago and have yet to shoot it due to crazy work schedules and whatnot.
As ive become more determined to make this a part of life, i kept asking myself, ultimately, what is the most important thing I need to make sure im 100% confident in when archery hunting. It's about etically putting that animal/deer down as quickly and efficiently as possible. I know that my older crossbow can do the job but my confidence in it is not there. Which is why i decided buy a cheaper 400fps killer instinct crossbow. This decision was based on the more readily information on the newer crossbow thay could be found.
Watching your videos testing different products have helped me get closer to having the confidence of pulling the trigger and harvesting an animal.
Keep it up, its definitely appreciated!!

They will get offended because you are talking about newer expensive technology that you love to use and they take offense to that because they’re shooting a lower and crossbow that’s like under $400. also bowhunters is a very broad definition. A lot of these people can’t see spending thousands of dollars when they only hunt a handful of times out of the year.

My favorite "Death by Bunjie" moment was when the gift of Bunjie Jr. hooked Genevieve into crossbow hunting. Watching her get her first deer with a crossbow was priceless! I'm a very long time vertical bow hunter who has an interest in crossbows. Heck, I don't even hunt with a crossbow, & I have a Swat X1 sitting in a box. I blame that on guys like you! LOL! I also couldn't pass up the $619.99 deal on one last fall. The day is coming where I may have to hang up my compound bow, but in the meantime I still enjoy shooting one. I find crossbows a bit boring to shoot, but that's me. Some day that may change. There's room in the woods for all of us! I have a 71 year old friend who still prefers hunting with his custom made Deathwish longbow. It limits his shots, but he's already harvested a lifetime of whitetails. I don't judge either end of the archery spectrum when it comes to equipment. A person should do whatever they enjoy! Thanks for reminding us of that Rich!

I have no plans to get the Burris scope. As of now. I spend my $$$ other places. It’s all a matter of priorities. I hardly consider you fancy, Rich, when you look at all the guys cruising around on $20K side by sides and e-bikes and hunting from shooting houses that cost as much as a used car. If you’re going to spend some $$$, I’d focus first on the xbow like you do! And 100% agree, you need to try out new equipment so we can learn about it if you want to be a content creator!

Seriously I think it is good to push the crossbow more into the world. But I do think technology needs to do a stand still and fix what they have make them more reliable and stop the speed race.
I like seeing the all the crossbows. The scorpyd is another life long crossbow just like the enforcer could be or even the Axiom. Granted I did always find the Axiom to be on the weaker side of power but thats just me.

I for one adjudicate you innocent of the charges placed against you in that comment. I think that the opposite is true. I've not seen you belittle anyone on their choice of crossbows. You've only stated fact that a person should get the best and fastest bow that they could and to practice with it to make sure that they will optimize their hunt and proficiency. When I bought my bow I chose a Killer Instinct Ripper 415. It was not the highest price bow, nor the fastest and maybe not the highest rated bow on the market but it's speed was pretty well up there, at that time, and it was in an affordable price range for my budget. I have only known you to give good information and have been very truthful in every aspect of what you've talked about. Thank you, Sir, for your help along the way.

Some people need to hate. How many people talk about crossbows consistently. on You Tube? I don't need to see 100 videos of someone shooting a deer. That is everywhere. Sponsors ruin t.v. shows and now it's spreading to this platform. You believe in a product that is good to discuss but I don't need someone telling me how great it is because they get paid a few dollars and a couple free things. Appreciate what you do and the content you bring. Keep doing what you are doing!

I hunted with a crossbow that was 320 ftps 1 crossbow I ever owned. The broad heads I was using weren't all that great. Then I found swhacker 100 grains. I double banded them and wha la. It became a kill machine. But unfortunately the limbs gave out after 3 or 4 years. So I went looking for another crossbow and decided on one that was $249. Set my same arrows up with swhacker 100 grains heads. I now have a constrictor crossbow. And guess what 500 grain arrows 2 in swacker broadheads. I found it using swacker the deer never ran over 20 yards if shot placement is correct. I Don't like to hunt without them It is a must. I think if your arrows are set up correctly and the correct broadhead your shots will become highly accurate in the kill zone and the deer will not go too far. Rich this is definitely something I cannot hunt without I got to have my swackers. I think you have found out that the blood trail and the game dropping pretty quick after shot it's been a key factor in the success rate, plus a complete pass through. It is sad that after impact just inside the body of a deer it still has 90% of the kinetic energy that it had when it left a bow. I tend to agree wholeheartedly because that 90% after it penetrates the first layer of skin is enough to drive it slap through the deer. I think if you logically think you're set up through you will be successful in hunting The key is know the limitations of your setup.

To; Whomever made that comment to Rich and the Swat X1,
I believe you need to step back and look at the bigger picture like Rich said in this video. If we as hunters (Compound or Crossbow) do not explore our options as the years pass the evolution of hunting will cease. Resulting in the game we pursue patterning hunters. I see it in AZ where I am a professional hunter or "Guide". 20 years ago, Deer/Elk were harvested at around 20-30 yards with archery equipment with no problem. The Deer and Elk started to realize "Hey if we stay 50-60 yards away and observe we won't lose a member of our heard"! So, hunters tactics evolved with modern equipment there is a lot of hunters making an attempt to harvest deer at LOOOONGER distances (80-100 yards) is it for everyone? No. Should you "Take That Shot?" that's a question only that can be answered by the shooter, they're the ones that have to live with the consequences of that action (but I don't recommend it). With that the Deer and Elk have evolved by staying further away yet again! Rich hasn't got away from his roots whatso ever, he works hard, has a family, he and Bunjie have become as regular in my home as the 6 O'Clock news, and he sacrifices takes his time to provide ALL hunters education videos or view points that he has found about crossbows, crossbow accessories, and hunting tactics that help and entertain so many. So for you to call Rich out in such a manor about the equipment that he purchased with his own money is disheartening, because you've missed the message entirely.
