Lock's disappointment is palpable 🤣 Hold the line, good sir! Matty, don't be afraid/discouraged to give your honest opinions. It creates great conversations and what we're all here for! ✌
I don't know about that. It seems like his issue here was predicability. I feel like he may actually really enjoy the characters and build of Hollywood more
@@ColombianThunder That's my point, the whole movie relies on prior knowledge of the historical context, same as inglorious basterds. You know what the movie is leading towards the entire time and the joy/entertainment is in the building tension.
@@liampugh I think that may entirely depend on if he even knows that the movie revolves around that. Even then, his issue with predicability here was from chapter to chapter and not so much the whole of a movie. I think if anything because the Sharon Tate stuff is so tangential to the movie up until the last 20 or so minutes will actually help him appreciate it, especially since Matty is big on character and whole crux of Hollywood are the characters of Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton. At worst I could just see him finding the Sharon Tate stuff pointless on a first viewing without any context
I do not understand Matty's taste in movies at all lmao. Some of his takes on this and Die Hard for example are baffling to me, and very much against the grain and out of left field. You can really tell how little cinema he's experienced before this show(as he's said himself tbf), by not realising how influential Die Hard was, or seemingly missing the point with Tarantino's style. Expecting to *always* be surprised otherwise you'll be underwhelmed, is just setting yourself up for disappointment, and is ignoring alot of other aspects of great filmmaking. I can't believe his take on the basement scene also, that's my personal highlight of this movie, Fassbender especially was amazing in this scene. Tarantino dragging out scenes to build tension is a staple of his style, but Matty just doesn't vibe with it at all. Regardless it's still a fascinating listen and interesting to hear a unique perspective from someone coming in so blind to these classic movies! You certainly never know what you're gonna get lol
Yeah, Tarantino's movies in particular are love letters to cinema and its history, and pay homage to countless movies and stories of the past, so sadly someone who only exposes themselves to modern four-quadrant Intellectual Property movies probably isn't going to have much enthusiasm or appreciation for QT material. Can't even imagine him getting to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
A movie being influential doesn’t have anything to do with how good that movie is. While I like inglorious more than Matty, I completely disagree understand his criticisms of the movie, I understand how someone could say scenes drag on and that it might be a bit boring. He has pretty valid criticisms
Next, he'll tell us that he prefers Call of Duty 4 to Black hawk down and that Black ops did "the russian roulette scene" better than The Deer Hunter...
Calling this movie boring is an insane take lol. I saw it for the first time this year too and I was engaged the whole time. I thought the slower parts really added to the overall slowish burn to the climax. I respect the opinion but of all the words Matty could’ve used I was not expecting boring lmao.
This movie is easily in my top 5 ever. The dialogue, the scenes, the shootout, the characters, and the ending are next to nothing but amazingly well crafted.
You complain about their not being enough said or enough story in Mad Max but now a movie that tells an interesting well crafted story with great dialogue, characters, and action but you were bored. Those parts that seem slow are building tension and further developing the characters. To me this movie is just masterful on every level.
I’ve gotten really into movies over the last few years and while watching inglorious basterds and Pulp Fiction for the first time I felt similarly to Matty. It felt like the movies were testing my patience. I also remember getting really irritated when I first watched scott pilgrim because Edgar Wrights brand of stylistic editing was something really jarring to me. I love all of these movies now. I think appreciating certain aspects of filmaking come after being exposed to enough movies and keeping am open mind. I like a lot of films now because of what they do differently from other movies I’ve seen. Imo Tarantino can be indulgent, but I love his stuff for it. Just relaxing and enjoying a scene, instead of fixating on what the next plot point will be is what’s important for appreciating his stuff imo.
Movies CAN surprise you, but its kind of an odd opinion that it is their JOB to surprise you. It is one tool in the toolbox, but movies don't exist solely to surprise. Maybe a mystery movie I guess. If everything was a subversion of a genre or a twist, there would be no genres or things to twist
Whether you love OR hate our favorite movies, it makes each conversation GOLDEN. You and lock have started something very special and I’ve loved every Call Sheet so far
Matty my boy we need to have a frank convo, just be the same analytical as you are with games and the characters. Enjoy the silence and see the nuances in the actors. Not a peloton
Why I don't think whether or not he's on a pelaton will affect his enjoyment of a movie, I do agree that a lot of the joy of the movie are the nuances in performance. That first chapter I would completely understand feeling impatient for if you already know or expect what the point of the seen is going to be, but for me, it's one of my favorite scenes because the exercise in tension and performance are entertaining on its own to justify the length
Matty needs a good explanation of the Bomb under the table from Hitchcock and cinema expectations before he continues, otherwise he's gonna hate so many movies lol
Calling this boring is so out of left field for me. Respect but I honestly can't even figure out how thats possible to feel that way. It's something i'd expect a tik tok addict to say about the movie.
Basterds isn’t my favorite Tarantino film. Most of his films are amazing but I have it right before once upon a time in Hollywood at second to last. The main villain was phenomenal but the movie felt a bit pretentious. I can however appreciate how much it means to Jewish person as a revenge film. Kind of like Django to a black Person but I was thoroughly entertained by Django
This guy has some of the worst takes period. Not just with film, but games as well. He calls Inglourious Basterds "boring" yet he enjoyed Starfield. He couldn't get into Sekiro because he wasn't interested in FromSoft making an action/adventure game. Saying that FromSoft could learn how to do story right from Lies of P. It comes as no suprise he also has horrible taste in film.

Aight Matty, you said we're free to T-off on you, so here I go: Can you go one episode without pulling a "ermmm a video game did this better 🤓🤓"?? Its apples to oranges: yes, they're both fruits. But when I want orange juice, I don't go to the store to buy some apples to throw in my juicer. Sit down, relax, maybe try to stop watching movies while its late as shit and trying to predict everything that comes next, and immerse yourself. Not everything needs some kind of crazy twist, cliches are cliches for a reason: they're tried and true. But you've gotta give a little to receive a lot. You don't need to love every movie you watch. I get that. But I'd never have thought you of all people would be coming at some of these topics with such a TikTok level attention span 😭😭
He’s been poisoned by MCU and Star Wars. jk I think he’ll learn to appreciate more subtle nuances in time, not everything needs to have an Empire Strikes Back or Kotor style twist for it to be compelling.
Yeah, this will probably sound snobby (and I do enjoy some MCU) but it's kinda painful to watch someone whose primary experience with movies is only the most expensive and glossy mass-market "entertainment" of the last quarter century. I mean, if something is "boring" because it builds suspense or you know where it's heading, maybe the whole format just isn't your bag. Framing pacing and sequences and everything against games as a point of comparison also doesn't help.
I don't think it's a film's job to necessarily surprise you or have a huge plot twist. I think Matty just needs to watch a lot more movies to start getting a feel for greatness, pacing, and story-telling. This is a very interesting series to see someone experience all these films for the first time and develop a preference.
Man I try not to be negative but damn I really just did not get Mattys complaints at all. Seen this when I was 15 and Matty was 14, loved it then love it now.
Matty should be forced to scour the earth to find one other person who also thinks Inglorious Bastards is boring - before he is allowed to watch another movie again.

Different opinions create interesting conversations. IB is one of my favorite but it’s interesting to hear a take on the opposite side. I understand Matty’s complaints and respect them even though I strongly disagree with some. I felt like Matty was maybe in a videogame mindset, where he expects the unexpected and any filler or silence without a purpose doesn’t forward the story? Maybe try to dissociate the two mediums? Maybe I am wrong. Now, I don’t need validation but I hope he likes The Godfather because if he doesn’t, it’s gonna sting!
I’m starting to think he’s going to hate every Kubrick film. Which is sad to me. Although I’m holding out hope that he may like Full Metal Jacket or Dr. Strangelove. And maaaaaaaybe (hopefully) clockwork orange. But I’m telling you right now he will disappointingly hate 2001, which is just sad.
I think Matty would still enjoy something like Django Unchained, but given his personal issues with this movie he should probably skip Hateful Eight :P
Love that Matty is getting to speak his opinions honestly. One thing i would like to respectfully disagree with is when he says its the filmmakers job to surprise him, i think thats a very limited point of view. Not saying he has to love marvel or blockbuster movies but i think the filmmakers job is to just tell a good story that keeps you interested and satisfied by the end. If to Matty that equates to being surprised thats totally okay but to me just saying "its your job to surprise me" comes off a little out of touch and one-track minded in my opinion, especially to potential viewers who may be seeking jobs or are in the film industry. Love the new channel, keep up the great work guys!
Matty's opinion on Tarantino being "economic" and putting money into actors is true for stuff like Inglorious Basterds and Hateful Eight, but I feel like Death Proof, Django Unchained and especially Kill Bill just throw that out the window. Tarantino makes movies he wants to see, he makes what he loves and is passionate about. And he excels in writing dialogue that is interesting.
Matty has watched too much anime. Transformers is probably more his speed, thinking any wolfenstein game is even remotely close to this masterpiece is a complete joke
Seems like most of the comments are people who indeed did not finished the video and got really upset from a deep passion for Inglorious Basterds. Mattys takes were really fair on terms of his tastes and he also loved a LOT of things in the movie that people are treating like he hated it.
Stellar film, surprised with how you grew bored with aspects. I am one year younger than you, so I don’t know if age was the issue. I will concede my attention span has worsened in some ways as I’ve gotten older and become more used to my phone and other tech always being at the ready.
I appreciate your honesty! I very much disagree but I can't say too much since I dislike most of the Marvel movies and you'd obviously disagree as much with me one some of my takes on that as I would here. All's fair in subjective art, I guess.
I gotta say. I checked out the imdb 250 due to these videos. And holy fuck is it a shit show. Some of the most influential, important and greatest movies of all time are barely scraping 200s while lowest common denominator garbage that has no business even being on the list at all is even in the sub 100s. A good portion of the list has nothing to do with quality and all to do with modern day marketing budget and social pressures of "its popular so it must be good".
So I had a thought... given that the 250 list is in constant change, should y'all capture it so that he's doing the full (as it exists now) list, and than at the end (which at one movie a week will take about 5 years mind) catch up on any new movies added? It would actually make the list matty watches be more like 270 or so I'm guessing, but that's not the worst thing...
I’ve been really enjoying all the content you’ve been making on the channel but I have one piece of feedback, the intro segment causes whiplash. The opening sequence is made up of all these beautiful pieces of cinematography with swelling music then it immediately hard cuts to Matty yelling “Welcome to Retro Rewind, IN TODAYS VIDEO!” while he’s wagging his finger in the air. I know Matty is a high energy guy and that’s great, it’s why enjoy all his channels but I feel for this channel in particular maybe he could make his intro a little more subdued especially with Lock saying the audience skews older on this channel. Besides that small piece of feedback everything has been great and I appreciate that Matty stays true to his opinion even if it may not be the popular one or one I agree with. (I also look forward to the day when Matty stops referring to well made movies with great cinematography, complex characters, and strong themes as “Artsy Fartsy” and calling things without a Empire Strikes Back or Kotor style twist predictable and thus lesser than, not everything is about shock and awe. But I can only hope that comes with more time and exposure).
This movie was gifted to me on my 10th Birthday. I had seen Kill Bill before when i was 8 but i hated it. Inglorious Basterds completely enamored me though and i would say it was my proper introduction to "cinema." I completely understand why you felt it was boring, i myself don't understand why i didn't think it was boring at 10 years old because 10 year old me only liked superhero stuff and pixar lol. It changed my whole view of what a movie could be. It was also the first movie besides maybe The Dark Knight where i understood the importance of a good performance.
I’m sure Call Sheet will eventually have some rewatches (and they absolutely should way down the line), I think anyone can get a movie wrong the first time. Maybe Matty will hold on to his take, but there is still hope
I didn't like the film the first time I watched it as I thought it was boring as well, but my partner really enjoys it. So I've watched it a couple of times over the years and it's a really great film, I don't think 1 watch is enough to appreciate everything it does.
Always love hearing a different view on one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks for being honest with it matty Curious what you'll think about kill bill and hateful 8 after hearing your criticism of bastards
You should rewatch the movie. I had the same kind of first impression, but the more I watched the movie the more I loved it and it eventually became my favorite Tarantino film.
The film creates a lot of tension and awkwardness between the characters which creates an interesting scene. I think it's best to watch each scene in the moment and not jump to a conclusion on how the situation will resolve.
This is one of those movies you watch more than once. It is a very saturated film. My first viewing I gave it an 8/10 but it gets better after a 2nd viewing. You catch new things
But (as with most things) this is not universal. I was surprised that I did not enjoyed it on rewatch. The strongest part of the movie is Hans Landa, how unique and unlike almost every other SS officer he is. It's very intriguing and fun to watch him, however the second time the magic is gone, you know what to expect. And while this works for me with tons and tons of movies, Inglourious Basterds just isn't one of them because there is not enough to look forward to... Just to say I'd not count on Matty falling in love with the movie on a rewatch.
lol, If Matty thinks it dragged on for too long in scenes he probably shouldn't watch anymore Tino movies. Seriously, don't do it, Matty. I like his movies but that is a valid complaint and you'll be torturing yourself if you watch more of them because they're all like that.
I saw this when it came out. I was 13 at the time, and it blew my mind. It introduced me to what acting and film making could be. After watching Inglorious Basterds I, couldn't go back to Star Wars with its stiff acting and overall mediocre screenplays.
You dislike media that is predictable but think Endgame is a masterpiece? The entire movie was predictable. You know they use the Quantum realm to time travel. You know they go back to certain movie moments and get all the stones. You know who dies immediately. You know everyone comes back from the Snap. You know how they will beat Thanos. You know Cap will lift the hammer and do shield combos. You know the sacrifices that have to happen. The only reason to like Endgame is for the action. Which is mostly tucked away in the last act. And man, if you think Inglorious Basterds is artsy fartsy pretentious, you haven't seen anything.
Then maybe don't watch and watch something else you enjoy rather than leave a negative comment that has no value 😂 not everyone has Ctitzen Kane as their favourite film and Matty's perspective is refreshing and unique. The beauty of film is its subjectivity, you should probably be more open-minded lol
Yeah, I haven't watched it. I watched the trailer back when it was released and considered watching it. But it sounds just like how I felt about the trailer. Meh.
I think people like me just feel triggered because we want Matty to exhibit a little more depth/consistency in terms of how he watches movies. I love Matty but Jesus his movie takes/explanations are mind boggling because he doesn’t understand the nuance of what directors are trying to do

Stellar film, surprised with how you grew bored with aspects. I am one year younger than you, so I don’t know if age was the issue. I will concede my attention span has worsened in some ways as I’ve gotten older and become more used to my phone and other tech always being at the ready.
Memento is a pretty great and unpredictable movie that Matty might enjoy
Memento has got to be on Call Sheet. Make it happen dudes
I appreciate your honesty! I very much disagree but I can't say too much since I dislike most of the Marvel movies and you'd obviously disagree as much with me one some of my takes on that as I would here. All's fair in subjective art, I guess.
Dang so mattys opinion on how great a movie is is based on how much it suprised him. Dude would love season 8 of game of thrones.
Let's get some older movies going too! "Once Upon a Time in the West" is damn near perfect.
Audience set you up for failure. This movie is one you gotta build up Tarentino fandom to appreciate more.
He is one of the only directors that has no budget or time limit
Yeah, I’m done with this series.
Yes!!! Iv been working for this one. Arrivederci
Come back in 6 months and watch it again if you still don’t like it.. you just have bad taste
Inglorious Basterds completely enamored me though and i would say it was my proper introduction to "cinema."
I completely understand why you felt it was boring, i myself don't understand why i didn't think it was boring at 10 years old because 10 year old me only liked superhero stuff and pixar lol.
Here’s where the fun begins…
Did Lock just call Eli Roth a 'great director' 😂
I didn't like the film the first time I watched it as I thought it was boring as well, but my partner really enjoys it. So I've watched it a couple of times over the years and it's a really great film, I don't think 1 watch is enough to appreciate everything it does.
Always love hearing a different view on one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks for being honest with it matty
Curious what you'll think about kill bill and hateful 8 after hearing your criticism of bastards
Yeah, you really gotta be into dialogue to be a die hard Tarantino fan, luckily I am and he's my fav director
You should rewatch the movie. I had the same kind of first impression, but the more I watched the movie the more I loved it and it eventually became my favorite Tarantino film.
I would say he should stick to reviewing games, but he's awful at that as well.
This movies will grow on him. Guaranteed
Tik tok brain
The film creates a lot of tension and awkwardness between the characters which creates an interesting scene. I think it's best to watch each scene in the moment and not jump to a conclusion on how the situation will resolve.
My favorite movie of all time- but admittedly, i walked out the theatre disappointed. Maybe our young matty needs to mature.
Welcome to:''Matty has terrible takes on films.'' hahaha
The JRPG Guru
I’m shocked of his opinion because he actually liked Pulp Fiction.
Well no bc the rest of his movies are actually fun...he tried to be too sophisticated with this one and that's not his strong point.
@@TylerNorCal We must've watched entirely different movies.
I'm going to be honest Matty I hate your taste in movies. I don't wanna be that guy but go watch Marvel then.
@@smaug_237 no
Damn im honestly surprised Matty didnt like it
one of the greatest movies of all time, top 25 at least.
End game was predictable tho so that doesn't check out. They gonna bring everybody back right...
It's funny how often I agree with Matty
Donnie was eli roth?! Wtf
This movie is awesome
Kind of boring???? I didn’t expect that. I thought you’d like it more than Pulp Fiction
Creation of the Gods part 1 is s fantastic Chinese movie
Yeah, I haven't watched it. I watched the trailer back when it was released and considered watching it. But it sounds just like how I felt about the trailer. Meh.
Horrible take
Do A Clockwork Orange
OMG 😂 Wolfenstein did it better, wow people who only experience media through games and Anime are wild.
mooooore
Kind of boring 😮
This is a very toxic comment section.
I think people like me just feel triggered because we want Matty to exhibit a little more depth/consistency in terms of how he watches movies. I love Matty but Jesus his movie takes/explanations are mind boggling because he doesn’t understand the nuance of what directors are trying to do
@@toddg1322 everyone watches and experiences films in different ways. not everyone is going into a film thinking about the director's vision or how a film measures up artistically; they just want to be entertained
