I always seen vol. 1 as an action film and vol. 2 as a western. Love them both.

One of the key things with Tarantino's films is that the "meta" of the casting and whatnot often adds to the story the film is telling. In the case of Kill Bill, casting David Carradine as Bill was a huge reference back to his claim to fame in the TV series Kung Fu and his status, at the time, as a big proponent of the martial arts in general (specifically Tai Chi). So to get him to do a film like this, playing a character like Bill... that was a big deal and carried with it a bit of narrative weight. It also made it more interesting to see the difference between "angry" Bill and "calm" Bill (because Carradine's character in Kung Fu was, and Carradine in real life, was pretty chill).
The two volumes of Kill Bill came out at a time when Tarantino was very much the talk of the town (though most of that talk was still about Pulp Fiction and not Jacki Brown, his more recent film at the time). And the fact that they came out so close together was a huge vote of confidence from the studio. A decade later and he most certainly would have been able to get them both released as a single film. But no on in the business thought a 4 hour film--or even a three hour one--would really sell... the success of the Lord of the Rings films was there, sure, but for an action film? No one thought the target audience would have the attention span for that.

I see Kill Bill, while 2 volumes, should be taken as one movie.

Elle didn't kill Pai Mei in a fight, she poisoned him like a coward.

Exactly. This was after he had invited her into his home and expended time and effort necessary to train her. She had no honor.

I have listened to every episode you guys have done so far and your take on this movie made me smile the most out of all your shows. Every director has those movies that people sleep on. Scene where she watches movie with her daughter is a old flick called Shogun Assassin. I can't recommend it enough. Ask Cog cuz he probably knows about it.

Im of the opinion that 2 is better than 1, but both are great. Looking forward to hearing Matty's thoughts.

1 is great but 2 is the better movie for me. The raised stakes make it feel more iconic I think.

Sorry you’re having teeth pain Lock, that sounds rough. Hopefully it’ll get better.
Matty, I’m really glad you enjoyed this one! I like both movies alot but my favorite scenes from the kill bill movies are in Vol 2. My favorite scene being when she breaks out of her coffin, I love the music playing in that scene. I love how Vol 1 is Tarantino paying homage to martial arts films and Vol 2 is more like him paying homage to westerns, which these are 2 of his favorite genres and it shows in both of these. But I do like looking at this as one big movie epic, Vol 2’s first chapter is “chapter 6” after all.
Can’t wait for The Godfather next week, curious to hear your thoughts. The Godfather trilogy are great movies (3 is kindof underrated in my opinion) but they’re movies that I respect more than I love, if that makes sense lol. Apocalypse Now and Dracula (1992) are my favorite Francis Ford Coppola movies in my opinion.

Michael Madsen is the voice of Daud, maybe Matty would recognize him from that. He is also the voice of Carver in Walking Dead Season 2 by Telltale games! he brings something *special* to every character!

6:10 there technically is a version of the movie that combines both called "The Whole Bloody Affair". I think it only released in Japan or something?? I remember hearing that there was talks of releasing it un the US but it just never happened.

It’s had a few limited releases in theaters in the US I think, but not a lot. Unfortunately The Whole Bloody Affair isn’t available to stream, but you can buy it on Blu-ray online I think.

Oh, damn, your thoughts on the last stretch of the movie are on point and so well said! It's one movie for me, volume 2 makes it complete, without it we have cool action flick, which is nice, but ultimately forgettable. Btw when I first saw it as a teen I found volume 2 a bit boring and absolutely adored vol.1 😅 Having vol.2 > vol.1 on your list is just as based as your current top 5.

It feels weird referring to a Tarrantino film as retro when his films are love letters to "Clasic" cinema. Oh god, I'm an old man.

Surprised to see that Vol. 2 had less of a good reception compared to Vol. 1
Always prefered the second one for the same reasons as you Matty, character development….

Complete side tangent, but the Superman analogy scene always irked me as someone that really likes Superman and thought Bill was slandering my boy by oversimplifying his character, but random dorky shit aside, vol 2 is a solid movie lmao

Really enjoyed Volume 1 but felt let down by Volume 2 as a teenager when I saw them in theaters. It just felt really slow paced and overly drawn out with uninteresting dialogue. I might feel differently now as it's been a long time and I'm overdue for a rewatch, but given that I have a tendency to get bored with Tarantino's dialogue in other films of his as well I don't expect my opinion will change much. It's a shame though because Volume 1 really doesn't feel complete on its own, but it's such a damn good movie. We'll see if my opinion changes.

Having different takes than the general public means you actually have taste Matty, don't worry 😂
