Yes, this is a true story. Eddie Vedder is the frontman's name. His mother sat him down as a young teen and told him that his stepfather wasn't his real father as he grew up believing then was told his real father is dead. There's a lot of truth to quite a few of his songs that he wrote about his own life experiences. Always thought Eddie had the best voice out of grunge, rock whatever you want to call it. This man has the BEST vocals and to this day Pearl Jam is still together. They're coming out with a new album soon but they're not giving any clues as to when this album will be released or what the name of it is but I'm PCHYCED ❤
@@ronnietornado396Because Corgan isn’t in the same league. Weiland, Layne, Lanegan and Andy Wood are the only contemporaries of Eddie and Chris that come close to them
"Grunge" as it was labeled back in the day encompasses so many influences and Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam demonstrate that. Vedder's voice, to me, is like a warmed glass of brandy. Deceptively smooth...there is this roughness to go with the sweet.
The 90s were a good time. I turned twenty in 94 so I saw it all come through. Born in the 70s grew up in the 80s and partied in the 90s. So much good music throughout them all.
Yo Molly boy, I'm glad to see that your gonna listen to Pearl Jam Alive. But don't forget react to Pearl Jam's other song called Jeremy or Jeremy Spoken (react to the official music video, if able and possible, but if not, then react to either Pearl Jam song Jeremy the lyrics version or the MTV unplugged live version)
‘Release’ is one of my favorites. They have so many excellent songs! I recommend listening to every song on the first album. It will always be one of the best of all time.
For a bit of a one-shot, I recommend listening to Temple Of The Dog's "Hunger Strike", which features vocals from Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden). The project was a tribute to a deceased friend, recorded before Eddie joined Pearl Jam. The whole album's great, but "Hunger Strike" was the lead single, and the emotion in the lyrics is awesome.
If you haven't yet, you NEED to hear the unplugged version of "oceans", the whole performance is just absolutely flawless. If I listened to that song and then died immediately, I would die happy.
Pearl Jams song 'Black' is one of the most powerful songs. His emotions through his vocals are insane. His vocals are superb! It's a breakup song. But its wild! Soundgarden/Audioslave (same lead singer) Chris Cornell had some great vocals. Not sure if I'd put them in grunge. But they all emerged pretty much at that time. Then new metal was popping up way before 2000. More like 96. Good music passed on and on... and now I get to see the younger generations discover thrash, metal, rock, grunge or new metal and i love it❤ man, i remember my 1st time hearing Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motörhead and all the rest...i was just as excited as Mollyboy!! I feel that!! 😎🤘
"Porch" live at pinkpop 😂 Eddie's a pretty intense dude, but he's all heart and soul and passion (as are they all), and a great storyteller in his music. That's a steep rabbit hole to go down, but worth it. Black Unplugged is one of the greatest vocal performances ever.
I think you should hear Daughter, and Better Man .. also Eddie Vedder does a cover of the Beatles" You've got to Hide your love Away" off the "I am Sam" movie soundtrack... Phenomenal!
Pearl Jam is in concert is wild. Eddie Vedder is having hard time sitting on his stool because usually up jumping around and he did some crazy climbs on stage in his younger years.
The song is about a) a teenage son finding out that who he thought was his father was actually his step father, not his biological father (which is true about Eddie Vedder), and b) the mother then forcing an incestuous relationship with the son because he reminds her of her dead husband (which is a fictional element to the song, not something that actually happened to Vedder). The chorus "I'm still alive" is not meant to be celebratory, but the son basically lamenting that unlike his father, he's still alive and now has to deal with this.
All the PJ songs are about experience and life, such greatness. I have sen them so many times and listen to them all the time. Many many people fly all over the world to see them live. We have met so many people seeing PJ. They still make music, they still tour and are still great. And they do sound the same after all these years. Last tour we saw them in Ft Worth on a Friday and then in Austin on Monday and Tuesday. Also bid, in the TEN club on 3-4 shows. If you get picked in the lottery, you bought the seats so we fly wherever. PS, Foo Fighters live are incredible too. Must see, and we do them as well.
Absolutely they do write songs about real life experiences. Not all but a lot of them do. Eddie Vedder definitely does. His song Black from this concert is the greatest break up song EVER
Alive is the song about Eddie himself finding out that his real dad is dead, and that he is still alive, and that his mother is still in love with his dad, and that he looks a lot like his dad, so.....yeah, that's what happened. And I guess that's why he drinks so much. There is a trilogy about this too, called Momma-son. There's a live version of the trilogy here on youtube, from Zurich-92.
Do we get Pantera ~ Mouth for War?! Other awesome Pearl Jam songs…. ~ Even Flow ~ Dissident ~ Jeremy ~ Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town ~ Yellow Ledbetter ~ Black “acoustic”
"Elderly Women behind the Counter..." has always made me so emotional, and I sing along with ever fibre of my being every time I hear it. The older I get, the more it hits.
The Pinkpop performance (1992) sees a young Vedder throwing himself around the stage like an absolute loon, or Hyde Park (2010) where you hear the crowd as loud as the band. Both powerful performances that capture the essence of Pearl Jam at their very best.
2 Pearl Jam songs that are spectacular are Pearl Jam Bkack from MTV uplugged and Pearl Jam Porch live at Pinkpop 1992. They are 2 if the most amazing performances by any band
Definitely recommend the studio version of this song, because the electric guitar solo on it is freaking epic. In my opinion the best guitar lead that came out of that area and that era of music. The band’s lead guitarist Mike McReady laid that one down. And the kind of voice singer Eddie Vedder has- low and gritty- was the type that came to the fore during that period as well. These guys are still going and rocking to this day.
If you like this, wait until you hear Black! It has to be from this performance as well. It is the most passionate vocal delivery. Talk about chills! It will make your playlist.
In 1991, I was 20. That year on August 27th Pearl Jam released "10". Less than a month later, on September 21st, Nirvana released "Nevermind". Only 3 weeks after that, on October 8th, Soundgarden released "Badmotorfinger". In my opinion, those three albums define what Grunge was and still is to this day. As a 20 year old who cut his teeth on 80's metal and was very bored of it by then, those three albums blew my whole world up! I saw Pearl Jam in 1993 (with Mudhoney and Pantera opening up), I saw Soundgarden in 1995 (With Metallica as the headliner and the Ramones on just before Soundgarden) and I regrettably never had the opportunity to see Nirvana. I'm glad you are having the chance to experience these classic artists now. Rock on, Man! 🤘✌
I was 11 and in the UK when all those albums were released. I didn’t get to see Eddie play live till many years later, but that man never disappoints. Was also fortunate enough to see both Chris Cornell and Scott Weiland before they died
This right here is what I experienced as well!!! Yet I was 17 and had the luck and opportunity to see Nirvana a few times! And yes they were that good! 💯🍻🤙
Can't wait for your reaction homie. Eddie's voice is unreal and soul piercing. Black happens to be my personal favorite, you will enjoy that one alot as well. 🙏
Eddie Vedder was absolutely the type to stand up on stage and smash guitars and hang from the ceiling and stuff. Check out live versions at concerts. My favorite is Live from Pinkpop 1992, "Porch".
The 90’s produced some of the best bands of all time. Tons of bands were getting signed, touring, and radio stations were playing it all. I turned 20 in 93. Partying my arse off and going to shows. It was a great time period.
Their entire Unplugged is...*chef's kiss*. The song is semi-autobiographical. Eddie grew up thinking his stepdad was his real father and didn't learn the truth until after his biological father had died. And, yes, the guitar solo in the studio version is pretty epic.
Pearl Jam is the best band of the last 30 years when you consider the depth of its catalogue. You will enjoy this rabbit hole for sure. You don’t necessarily need to listen to studio versions because Pearl Jam has available recordings of nearly all of their concerts, but you should check out a live electric version too. The electric solo in Alive is epic. If you want a studio version of a PJ classic, I recommend you check out the studio version of Release.
Yea, it's a true story. In a small venue in the early 2000s, i think, he explained how our (fans) interpretation of the song lifted the curse of his original intention of the song.
First, I appreciate your open mind with music. Second, Grunge is a sub-genre of punk, so the bands are all a little different. Third, Eddie Vedder’s rendition of “Masters of War” by Bob Dylan is an amazing vocal display. Give it a gander.
I saw Pearl Jam on their first tour out in a small venue and it was absolutely phenomenal! Then I saw them in Calgary, Alberta years later and they just rocked. PJ and Eddie Vedder is up at the top of my list of all time fav bands ever!! Thank you ❤❤ check out Alive live at Pink Pop concert and yes, Black is phenomenal 😊 I love all of their tunes and my fav concert is their Seattle show, well worth watching 👍💯
This Album Shaped my path and is a reminder that the soundtrack of life is their own and no one but theirs! You my friend, just witnessed many lives changed forever!!! Your soundtrack just got bigger! And yes it is considered “Grunge”! And I grew up and still live within the boundaries that you are now seeing! You have chosen wisely! 😎🤙 🎉❤
The last song on their album "Ten" called "Release" makes me cry just about every time I hear it. You should really check it out! Especially the Live version from Holland.
Black unplugged. The entire MTV set is awesome Anything off of Ten and/or Versus. These guys are some of the best live performers, often better than studio versions. My all time favorite vocalist, barely edging out Chris Cornell (Soundgarden). Fun to see a younger generation appreciating the 90’s grunge era. Cheers
They recently put out a live EP with recordings from some shows they did in September. Check out that version of "Release", cuz the crowd singing along will give you some goosebumps. Great recording 🤘
Been a PJ fan for over 25 years and been to around 15 shows. You need to check out Black and Porch from this same show. And even Oceans (Eddie’s voice man….)
"I've never heard vocals like this before" - welcome to Eddie Vedder.
"Black" from this very same show for sure!
Absolutely
Such a good performance
The best ever
This
I agree the best song from this session was Black!
FYI, when you do "Black" you'll want the unplugged live version like this. For "Jeremy" you want the official video.
💯 that's real!! Black live is sensational and emotionally a ride!! Jeremy video is a mind blower!! Especially in 1990-91. So relevant today!
Solid advice! 💯

Vedder and Cornell were the 2 greatest voices of Grunge Rock.
Vedder, Cornell, Cobain, Weiland
Layne

Black, from unplugged. You have never seen a man, this level of heartbroken, put to words as this performance. a MUST
There is a video of Pearl Jam singing WITHOUT MICROPHONES in a CD store for lucky fans. That’s when it’s really raw. It’s SOOO AMAZING!
