This is one of those songs that keeps me going. I was at my lowest point 3 years ago I hit rock bottom, I ended up going to jail doing a total of 22 months. Got out and completed 7 months of parole. Now here I am sober since April 15 2022, I’m 28 years old now, I finally have my own apartment, I have a good job and I’m living the life that I should have been living years ago, but this song makes me so happy and literally takes the words right out my mouth, I don’t do them same drugs no more. Chance I love you man
@Sherrianne Nicholas It’s not practice makes perfect, Chance is saying how perfect she is and how he was just practice for her. It’s not supposed to be funny it’s just the line that gets in his feels.
Timothy Fitzgerald - nah, people can enjoy an entire song but still like a specific lyric or verse from it. Doesn’t mean you’re skimming, just appreciating the word play.
Allen Iverson Got Me , I would do the infamous Rant but I already Lost my sanity’s, it’s just Time for me to go in motion Fame ain’t worth it being a good person Is Money Don’t Change , My environment And energy Does so I gotta attracts what align It🥴, This World Shady Black Live Matters Racists Still exist
The last lines sang in this song can indicate why this project is called "Coloring Book". Chance uses the fact that he and his significant other or someone he cares about don't use the same drugs anymore as a metaphor for them growing apart and maturing and going their own way. He names the project "Coloring Book" because it reminds him when he was a child and how everything was better or when "they did the same drugs" and how he was close to this special someone. Also the point of a coloring book is to color within the lines. When he sings "Don't you color out don't you bleed on out". this is just showing another way of him not wanting this person to change and grow away from him. The coloring book symbolizing how he and this special someone and all of the colors were withing the lines or together, and the action of coloring out side of the lines , as he states, is this special someone growing away form chance. Chance ultimately misses this person and is saddened that they had to leave each other and mature. This can explain the odd setting for this music video. It looks like some kind of children's show studio. Another instance of how he misses the past. I don't know if this correct by any means. It's just something I picked up on.
The last lines are actually about he's daughter, he refers to her as "Dandelion". He wants her to stay in the protected environment and to "stay in the lines" of the coloring book and not "bleed out".
oh I see. At first I was wondering why he would say this about his daughter in this specific song because it is clearly about someone chance used to like or a person that means a lot to him in the past. So maybe the purpose of him adding in those last line of the song is a connection between his daughter and this women in the song and a way of him saying how he doesn't want his daughter to follow in the same footsteps as this person sang in the song. He doesn't want her to grow up and change and loose her innocence. And how he is afraid of the entire cycle being repeated with his daughter as the next generation for the significant other in the song.
“She don’t...laugh the same way no more.” This song hits so many emotions. It’s about heartbreak, growing apart, making mistakes, falling into bad habits, trying to help someone who can’t be helped, trying to heal permanent scars, ending things but still caring so much about each other.
Without a doubt, I wish this version was on the album. Every time I'm listening to the album I stop at Same Drugs and pull up youtube quick to get this version.
The feeling of nostalgia is often described as the cognitive dissonance between happiness and sadness. Part of you remembers the times of happiness, is thankful for it, while the other part of you knows that not only can you not go back, but things will never be the same again
Chance The Wrapper every rapper is an artist, because they all make arr by pretty much every definition. It's not a label you can slap on to shit you like.
This song is so deep. its about friends who distance eachother because of age. Not doing the same drugs no more means that they have finally grown apart and the only thing left is memory. so he starts to recollect the memories in the end as he walks away symbolizing the path he is going in order to forget about it all. And i just totally made all that up, stop taking these comments so seriously and listen to the song, interpret it into your own words and see it through another perspective. That's how art works. it keeps you thinking.
I lowkey just go to like Genius.com or some other music/lyric/rap site if I haven't already followed up on the process of the album. From what I found, the lyrics are about an old friend who's followed a different path while also looking back on his own past and the feelings of losing while growing up (Hence the PeterPan references to Wendy)
And the ending references him walking out on this past life/childhood. Leaving a childlike place surrounded by puppets, beautiful lights, falling snow, etc.
Suzette, I am here tonight because he performed the song on The voice with three of the contestants that had done been eliminated, and that performance was absolutely amazing compared to this video, I hope you got to see it ‼️
@@brandonswartz8592 Oh wow thats so beautiful. I was thinking about like a drivethru Wendy's where you might go as a kid with your parents. How the window is now closed, the restaurant different, your parents have changed and you're no longer in the backseat just driving along with someone to trust completely.
“Same Drugs” describes the relationship between Chance and a girl from his childhood. Realising that they no longer share the same interests and experiences that they did as children, Chance reflects nostalgically on their shared youth and explores his own feelings of loss around growing up - Genius Lyrics
that shit was deep, everyone when he left was a puppet , even the girl he loved became a puppet, but he is still real, with no strings attached. give this guy a grammy! he deserves the shit!
Hands down Chance’s best song. When he sings the lyric ‘we don’t’ and the female sings straight after ‘I don’t’, really puts heartbreak into perspective. This isn’t a song about people taking drugs, this is a song about heartbreak and losing someone you love, you drift and grow apart and stop doing the ‘same drugs’ you once did.
Ending is epic... This song has definitely changed for me over the years. The words are fluid. I'm seven years into my recovery and I can so feel this song. Glad my paths have crossed with yours Chance. God Bless You!
Been a big fan since Acid Rap. Crazy how 2015 I used to ask people if they listen to Chance and they always reply "Who is that?" now they finally know. Im glad he is getting the recognition he deserves.
Danielle King for real tho! lol I used to always play acid rap and one of my best homies told me they never heard of him till Coloring Book. I was like 'Nah you just weren't paying attention' 😂
Danielle King I know I've been here since I saw 10 day on my suggested like a couple of years ago and I was like wtf and then I was like wait this dude isn't famous yet....
"Don't you miss the days, stranger? Don't you miss the days? Don't you miss the danger?" is one of my favorite parts ever in a song. This song is a masterpiece
Actually i can hate him pretty easily. My music taste is massive. Which is exactly why i can hear how untalented this generic fake rapper is. Wake up people xD This generic shit you call music is actually just a tool to condition millions of people into stupidity.
Why would that make you hate him though, just because you don't like his music? I prefer lyricists however that's not what chance is, Especially on coloring book. Listening to a lot of different music won't help a small mind.
Dokter Dre i'd say he's more of a rapper than all the people who just mumble through a fucking song. At least you know what he's saying and it makes sense. Plus the whole thing about rapping is that it is rhyming. If it didn't then it would sound kinda shitty
My mom died of an overdose almost a year ago now. And my father got deported back home. I always loved Chances’ music, but this version brought me out of my dark place. I’m currently pursuing my dream career, and listen to this everyday on the job of my dreams. Thank you Chance. Thank you so much for saving me from doing something I’d regret. Thank you so much.....
I saw Chance live in concert with my ex, this was the last song he did. She recently passed away from an overdose and this song 5 years later hits really hard. How hard you ask? Im crying while writing this out......all you need is happy thoughts, right Chance?
At the end its you against you. Stay strong brother, live a full life. Go fishing, take the trip, be kind, buy food for the homeless, adopt a stray kitten, write a card to someone who is close to you, go to the party, forget yourself a little - so on day, when you meet her again in heaven, you can tell her all of it.
I love when Chance sings "you were always perfect and I was only practice" and the girl makes a skeptical noise to the "you were always perfect" and challenges it by singing "I was only practice" in unison with Chance. Just completely brilliant.
If you like this kind of narrative tool in songs, there's a song called Dearly Departed by Shakey Graves that does something like this, I'd recommend it.
Chance The Creator as we amazing chance fans see him as that the sad part is it won't happen i love chance i found all his songs and albums amazing but the people like lil yachty, ugly god, kodak black, and 21 savage they have no skill nothing good they just cuss a shit ton of times talk about fucking your girl or mom and it's just so dumb and somehow people find that amazing like in ugly gods new song he says bitch 32x and people are like "wow he's so good" i have a friend like that and when i showed him chance he says chance is trash it's his opinion but i always loved chance and will keep on loving him
Chance. Do it for the art like you used to. Forget numbers and fame please. You actually saved me. I’m typing this reaching out to someone I don’t know but would love, truly. Thank you.
so much fucking talent...its a shame more rappers/musicians sang like that. if you told me had 0 musical training I would have a hard time believing it...
i really wish people could see the beauty within the video and the music itself. The song is about growing up.once i realized this everything made since. the video seems to be mimicking sesame street. the peter pan references throughout the soung... the losing your marbles line.. this nigga is amazing . hes saying he dont do drugs no more and not meaning it literally but meaning he doesnt do the bad habits and things he used to do because he grew from them(Stay in the line was one of the most beautiful lines to me. mann we need more artist like him !!
+Chris Hernandez I agree but the main message behind the song is to grow . Just think about it (the coloring book) and he said stay in the line which is showing him trying to break bad habits
People saying the video is trash and it doesn't make sense but haven't understood the meaning of the song. Same drugs isn't about drugs! Same drugs is about growing up and realising the things that used to give us a buzz or a high aren't the same. Chance has really blown my mind with this one replacing people with puppets like children replace real things with made up. A masterpiece, truely.
Hones T I always thought it was about a friend he used to smoke with and hang out with and they started to go down a dark path and started using harder drugs like heroin and chance missed them lol
My ex wife and I bonded deeply over this album, saw Chance during the tour. We were married for 6 amazing years. But eventually you can hit a point where you arent the same people and want different things from life despite the love still being there. I wish there had been some kind of hurtful reason for us to divorce, but we just didn’t do the same drugs anymore.
Chance is such a creative genius, I can't think of any other rapper that'd make a music video with a puppet, I hope in the future I can get the chance to work with him, such a talented individual.
lol chance is really talented and all but I would't call him a "creative genius" just for having a muppet in a music video. Again as Jonathan Graham said, credit is also with the director.
this song, this album was a musical baptism. it was cleansing. a rebirth. inspiring. I was so happy for Chance when this dropped. He had truly found peace, and that peace sounded so beautiful.
Fun fact about chance, his first mixtape "ten day" he is looking up on the album cover. This is him symbolizing looking up at the "rap game". His second mix tape, acid rap, hes looking directly at the rap game. And his third mixtape coloring book, hes looking down on the rest of the rap world. Pretty cool
handles139 its not meant as a cocky thing, its more to symbolize how hard he has worked, and by staying independent and true to his beliefs he was able to rise above the rest, doing it his way.
I've been listening to Chance since he got suspended from high school and dropped his first tape. Its awesome to see him doing good and making a name from himself! Much love bro
THESE LYRICS ALWAYS TAKE ME OUT 🥺: Don't forget the happy thoughts All you need is happy thoughts The past tense, past bed time Way back then when everything we read was real And everything we said rhymed Wide-eyed kids being kids Why did you stop? What did you do to your hair? Where did you go to end up right back here? When did you start to forget how to fly?
Thank you for your Spirit. I discovered you in 2015 as I battled a 27 year eating disorder. Your music, your soul, your recording b4 the World got to know U ... You allowed for me to be calm and embrace my soul to simply just JAM! Your musical creations are medicine. GR8 FULL 4U
I feel like this song is so catchy to the point where it doesn't make any sense.😂 I be outside like, WE DON'T! DO THE SAME DRUGS NO MORE! 😂 This song is magical🔥🤘🙏
It’s the end of 2023, and I can finally say: we don’t do the same drugs no more. Thank you god for deliverance and thank you chance and team for this timeless musical masterpiece 🎉 I’ve loved chance from the start. His music has themed many of my nights, days, and now a forever nostalgic feeling everytime I hear any of his music.
You're the man Chance. From one Christian to another, God bless you bro. Keep up the great work. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.” - Jeremiah 29:11
the transition from 3:20 - 3:40 is just so beautiful. The visual shift alone is awesome, that part of the song alone is awesome but together it's even better. I love it.
This song means a lot to me because, for me, when I listen to it I imagined my past self/ex friendships. I just think of myself singing to those people who are no longer in my life. I remember times in high school, when this song would play as my friends and I drove around the city. We would sing along to it, not really listening to the lyrics. Not a care in the world. "We don't, we don't do the same drugs no more." I can relate to that by taking it literally as I don't do drugs the way they all do anymore, and things had to change. The universe literally made sure I couldn't be in that phase anymore (I had a bad reaction one night). Anyways, I also think of it as we just don't lead the same lives anymore. We're not on the same paths. For a very, very, long time, I chose to suffer and miss them. I wondered why it had to end this way, after all the times I tried to control my life and make sure everything was perfect. But then life tells you "Ha, bet." Life is so wild tho because now, at 23, I have been hearing and seeing that all of those people from HS are still in the same exact place, same drama, bad energy, bad stories, etc. Then I imagined how drained and unhappy I would have been trying to be the peacemaker for all of them. That was when I knew forsure, it was meant to be. Who knows what my life would have been like if I kept going and felt unstoppable? And had friends who were negative, toxic, and lowkey did not actually ever mean well for me.Crazy! Change is so painful for me. It always was since I was a little kid and probably may always be like this. But I know in my heart it has to be this way. "I was too late, I was too late.. a shadow of what I once was." Chills.
Victor Castro Chance has plenty of hype songs, you just haven't listened to them probs. 'No Problem' and 'Angels' are some of the most hype songs most recently
I open my youtube after listening to it on Twitter, it's the first thing I see on my home YT page. I'm not even subscribed to Chance, I feel blessed (and maybe a little bit high too)
to my knowledge this song is about Chance looking back nostalgically at a relationship he had with a girl, and realizing how much they have both changed, for better or for worse. I think we all have someone like this, a family member, friend, or ex who we havnt thought about in a while...
I think of it that way too. This song reminds me so much of my ex partner. Our galaxies were so different that we are the depiction of Chance and the lady by his side. This so is hitting the home of my heart!! We still love one another greatly!
He also references Peter Pan a lot in it. He says things like a shadow of what I once was and how did you forget how to fly. If you listen closely throughout the song he talks about it a lot

1:51 - “You were always perfect, and l was only practice.”
That line gets me every single time.
like in practice makes perfect. ( i dont understand why it's funny).
@Sherrianne Nicholas It’s not practice makes perfect, Chance is saying how perfect she is and how he was just practice for her. It’s not supposed to be funny it’s just the line that gets in his feels.
When Jay z asked "Do fools listen to music or do you just skim through it" it was for lines like that

Helix or because of his previous album called "Acid Rap" can be connected to "Coloring Book" ... get it Acid-> Colors
Thatone Nigga why would that be relevant?
Good analysis and you need to be a journalist :)

"Don't you miss the days, stranger? Don't you miss the days? Don't you miss the danger?" is one of my favorite parts ever in a song. This song is a masterpiece
You literally can't hate this guy. He's so good at his style no matter what genre you listen to, all he got is props
Actually i can hate him pretty easily.
My music taste is massive.
Which is exactly why i can hear how untalented this generic fake rapper is.
Wake up people xD
This generic shit you call music is actually just a tool to condition millions of people into stupidity.
Why would that make you hate him though, just because you don't like his music? I prefer lyricists however that's not what chance is, Especially on coloring book. Listening to a lot of different music won't help a small mind.
Zay Is the Way Thanks I love you because you use my words , I'm A big fan of him 😻
Zay Is the Way 8k people thought differently
Stay strong brother 🙏
L + Ratio
hope you're still surviving and thriving, sending you lots of love!
I know you are getting stronger everyday. Sending much love
You got this, Liam. You got this!! 🙏

I really loved that Chance added the girl's voice to the song making it more emotional and nostalgic
Yeah that caught me off guard but it sounds beautiful (:
FLOREZ I honestly liked the original more
MXRiderForLife I agree!
Summer friends is going to be insane...
Brian Spinner def my favorite song on the album. that would be awesome if there was a video for it
Man!! I'm waiting on it!!!
don't they already have a video for that?
Most definitely the best song on coloring book. Definitely anticipating the video.
Brian Spinner bro I'm waiting on that
I saw Chance live in concert with my ex, this was the last song he did. She recently passed away from an overdose and this song 5 years later hits really hard. How hard you ask? Im crying while writing this out......all you need is happy thoughts, right Chance?
Keep fighitin, she would have never wanted to see you in such pain
😢
I’m so sorry , stay strong no matter what
At the end its you against you.
Stay strong brother, live a full life. Go fishing, take the trip, be kind, buy food for the homeless, adopt a stray kitten, write a card to someone who is close to you, go to the party, forget yourself a little - so on day, when you meet her again in heaven, you can tell her all of it.
Sending all my love
thanks for donating 1 mil to cps you saved my education huge creds
I love when Chance sings "you were always perfect and I was only practice" and the girl makes a skeptical noise to the "you were always perfect" and challenges it by singing "I was only practice" in unison with Chance. Just completely brilliant.
Me too
If you like this kind of narrative tool in songs, there's a song called Dearly Departed by Shakey Graves that does something like this, I'd recommend it.
I wish you could save RUclips comments
Good observation friend👍
Hadn’t consciously noticed in the hundreds of times I’ve listened to this song until your comment. Don’t you miss the days.
Who’s listening in 2025?
✌️
Chance The Rapper and The Puppet... still a better love story than twilight
Watching Chance evolve is honestly something else.
Chance will go down as the greatest musician our generation has ever seen
Chance The Creator as we amazing chance fans see him as that the sad part is it won't happen i love chance i found all his songs and albums amazing but the people like lil yachty, ugly god, kodak black, and 21 savage they have no skill nothing good they just cuss a shit ton of times talk about fucking your girl or mom and it's just so dumb and somehow people find that amazing like in ugly gods new song he says bitch 32x and people are like "wow he's so good" i have a friend like that and when i showed him chance he says chance is trash it's his opinion but i always loved chance and will keep on loving him
Drink Guud Bleach said exactly what all us chance fans think. we know his talent tho✊
Chance The Creator GO WATCH THE LINK IN MY BIO
Chance The Creator agreeeeeeeeeeed
Drink Guud Bleach lol I like all those people you named lol Chance is good as well.
yebba’s voice so beautiful
CHANCE MADE THIS FULLY AWARE IT WILL BE LOOKED BACK ON 30 YEARS AS A CLASSIC
oddly enough, I never read anyone online that have realized this song is a reference to Peter Pan's chapter 17 "When Weny grew up"
Yea I don’t think we’re makin it 30 years
@@dylanroth1057 I felt that😔✌️
@@dylanroth1057 I will 😆
When you watched this 20 times since it dropped, he needs a Grammy like now 🖤✊🏾

Charlie Charles yup
Charlie Charles The video is mimicking The Muppets from the early 90's dipshit😂 Awesome show❤️
+Melvin *the muppets
Its actually about his ex, and that they dont share the same drugs (habits) anymore like they used to
+Chris Hernandez I agree but the main message behind the song is to grow .
Clay Boy I guess it could be interpreted that way also
he tweeted it wasn't about drugs
My ex wife and I bonded deeply over this album, saw Chance during the tour. We were married for 6 amazing years. But eventually you can hit a point where you arent the same people and want different things from life despite the love still being there. I wish there had been some kind of hurtful reason for us to divorce, but we just didn’t do the same drugs anymore.
"I CLAIM THIS VICTORY IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!" - Chance 2k17
Jason DoubleV praise the lord
Carter Robinett Always praise to the king of all kings.
Killable Gamer wow you deserve to go to hell
Sebastian Flores No he just hasn't heard the gospel yet.
Gods pretty dumb but proud of my boy Chance
Chance is such a creative genius, I can't think of any other rapper that'd make a music video with a puppet, I hope in the future I can get the chance to work with him, such a talented individual.
lol chance is really talented and all but I would't call him a "creative genius" just for having a muppet in a music video. Again as Jonathan Graham said, credit is also with the director.
dude there's tons of them lol Aesop Rock has like half of his videos like that
Tyler the creator but give some credit to the director as well
Jordon Broughton
Facts, how'd I not mention Tyler, The Creator.. I'm wilin, lol

Unstated, but perhaps a reference to the "Trinity"...?
this song, this album was a musical baptism.
it was cleansing. a rebirth.

Pretty cool
Josh T original
Handles139 actually makes sense when you see the three covers all in order next to each other
Josh T that's dope
handles139 its not meant as a cocky thing, its more to symbolize how hard he has worked, and by staying independent and true to his beliefs he was able to rise above the rest, doing it his way.
Josh T that’s so coooll good job chance 👏🏻
Those chords 😩 beautiful
"you were always perfect, and ii was only practice."
Jeez, I feel like I know him personally just from listening to his music for years. He is truly an icon. His music is beautiful.
Much love to Chance. 🙌
because each mix represents a time in his life. it's beautiful isnt it?
I love him so much for this😩.
This version is so much better than the Spotify and Apple Music version I swear.
This song makes me feel feelings.
Theinsomniac826 you know what? Same
I've been listening to Chance since he got suspended from high school and dropped his first tape.
Its awesome to see him doing good and making a name from himself! Much love bro

Looks like the only good artist in your history.
Robert Garcia Lol my youtube history is plagued by others. However the music on my channel is 🔥 imo.
well it was suspended from college but whatever
I love artists who have that mellow funk and gospel kind of vibes, like Chance, Pharrell and Snoop to name a few.
MrSsb2000 chance does it the beat though.
THESE LYRICS ALWAYS TAKE ME OUT 🥺:
Don't forget the happy thoughts
All you need is happy thoughts
The past tense, past bed time
Way back then when everything we read was real
And everything we said rhymed
Wide-eyed kids being kids
Why did you stop?
What did you do to your hair?
Where did you go to end up right back here?
When did you start to forget how to fly?
Every time.
My favourite song in Colouring Book tbh
My nigga chance is #4 on trending he deserves this
This version >>> album version
This was already one of my favourites of the album but he took it to another level here.

ABC GamingHD John Legend and Eryn Allen Kane aren't on the album. And the music in general.

Thank you god for deliverance and thank you chance and team for this timeless musical masterpiece 🎉 I’ve loved chance from the start. His music has themed many of my nights, days, and now a forever nostalgic feeling everytime I hear any of his music.
The female singers have a beautiful voice
Cooper Andersen it's Eryn Allen Kayne look her up she's amazing
Her and Abbey Smith (Yebba), you should check out her videos too
and an amazing body, like damn do you see they those puppet lips move?
I think Chance has a beautiful voice too

the transition from 3:20 - 3:40 is just so beautiful. The visual shift alone is awesome, that part of the song alone is awesome but together it's even better. I love it.
Imagine if Mac Miller and chance had made a mixtape together
This comment almost caused instant tears 😢
Dang

I would’ve drowned in my tears. The soul that album would’ve carried 😤
crying
Happy for you, reading this while listening to the song made it 5 times better
Keep your chin up. Head strong. You are doin it.
This will help whoever reads it

ImDibb no we need someone hype, we need a good rock band to perform and put the players in the mood to win!!
Victor Castro Chance has plenty of hype songs, you just haven't listened to them probs. 'No Problem' and 'Angels' are some of the most hype songs most recently
ImDibb too late already said who it will be next they said Adele and Fetty Wap
ImDibb yeah
NateDaSavage dang I really want something different this year
3:24 from this point is straight up gospel. Moves my heart everytime
I open my youtube after listening to it on Twitter, it's the first thing I see on my home YT page. I'm not even subscribed to Chance, I feel blessed (and maybe a little bit high too)

I know but, still :')

to my knowledge this song is about Chance looking back nostalgically at a relationship he had with a girl, and realizing how much they have both changed, for better or for worse.
Hes singing to Vic Mensa. Look into their past amd present
@@shooters66 this is literally about the city Chicago
He also references Peter Pan a lot in it. He says things like a shadow of what I once was and how did you forget how to fly. If you listen closely throughout the song he talks about it a lot
It's about his home city Chicago and how it has deteriorated into a violent place. He even calls her "Wendy," aka Windy, the Windy city.
