  • TBH I am more impressed than anything that we lifted the head on every single cylinder. On the bright side, I think we have a solution that should hopefully keep this from happening again. In short, don't send 50PSI Through a standard set of MLS Head Gaskets. Your Subaru won't like it.

      Cummins bent a push rod and is getting fire ringed and my wife’s Honda cracked the vcm4 head. Not very impressed with the j35 Honda. Unless it has the j32 multi port heads. Then it may be worth it.

    The Cummins 5.9 fire ring is 1.05 thick and the bore size is 102mm my bore on my subie is 100mm so I’m putting Cummins fire rings in my Subaru 06 sti 100mm bore. Also the head gasket thickness on a Cummins is .060 and my Subaru is .058. I’m already fireringing my Cummins so I was curious about the fire ring figment on a Subaru. And yes the Cummins 5.9 fire ring will work perfect on a 100mm Subaru which is .5 mm over stock 99.5

    Have you considered doing what mighty car mods did with their ez30 built turbo? Marty went smaller turbo and ended up making more power and torque then his larger application, just under 600whp on only 25 psi but over 1200nms of torque now. Being bigger displacement I can't see why you wouldn't achieve the same sort of result.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  5 месяцев назад +2

      Smaller turbo wouldn’t hurt us, but it would significantly limit power output. We had a 6870 on it prior and capped that turbo before anything else. Marty is also using his as a street car where I’m not.
      He also wanted to achieve quicker spool because his power band was pushed so far out. Even with the 7675 we can get the turbo kit up at 4500RPM since we have more displacement. And my set up is a true twin scroll. Jumping up to Larger exhaust wheel will help lower EMAP and give us lower cylinder pressures without sacrificing too much RPM for spool

  • @HeidiFegles
    @HeidiFegles 5 месяцев назад +1

    0- rings will fail. Don’t ruin this motor. Fire rings like the Cummins .105 soft stainless fire ring with groove cut in block and groove in head and ditch the head gasket crush area on the cylinder and never have another problem. O rings are not the answer it’s a short cut.

I'm doing rocker cover gaskets and timing belt and things like the waterpump I cannot find outside of Ebay. They are from GMB. Might be fine but I'm weary of counterfeits.

    Honestly, if I were you, I’d be trying to mimic the Isle of Man STi that Mark Higgins ran. 600 HP, lightweight, and extreme handling.
    But that’s me. I know you like the straight line pulls. I find that boring, personally, but I get how some people do. It just seems like a lot of extreme pressure on the motor and drivetrain for a few seconds of fun. And things break.
    I’ll get a lot of negative comments and you have a different path for this build. Just my 2 cents.
    Good luck with the fix!

  • @HeidiFegles
    @HeidiFegles 5 месяцев назад

    Dude IV been watching for awhile and I think my kids unsubscribed me. Anyways just notice and re subscribed. And 18psi and a good torque curve will lift a head on a 4 cylinder. I just did it. It’s the torque load. And timing advance. Back that timing off a few degrees in the torque curve and save the gaskets. It’s peak timing being too advanced combined with high boost. that lifts the heads. And 650 hp turned down. Dude just run it at that and have a good time. My car makes 400 wheel torque and is an absolute blast to drive. 650 I couldn’t even keep the wheels planted. Back the timing off at peak torque by -2, or -3 degrees off what you have seriously. It makes a huge difference in head gasket longevity. If you have fire rings. Disregard every thing I said and run the same map and let her eat.

    I've used malleable copper seals for cylinder heads before - not an internal combustion engine but a 4500 psig high-pressure air compressor. Pressure increase on the high pressure (4th compression stage cylinder) was around 2200 psig (from 3rd stage pressure of 1800 psig up to 4th stage 4500 psig with tremendous heat). The copper seal on that 4th stage cylinder worked fantastically for maybe 15 years since the previous overhaul with no leakage to the cylinder water jacket until the head material around the seal crumbled from heat cycles (the machine was manufactured in 1943, after all, and the failure occurred in 1976). Had an insert fabbed up for the remachined head after removing the damaged metal, annealed that copper seal (none could be found in our supply system), put that same seal back into place, and good as new. Your copper cylinder block-to-head seals seem to me to possibly be a good solution. Good luck. Great video.

    Nice dude, I got that o-ring tool and it's great. I would run stainless wire with composite head gaskets (do subarus come with composite head gaskets?). Then you don't need to replace the wire every time you remove the heads. Replacing the copper wire is a bit of a mission because they crush flat. I've seen a few evos run 1000whp with stainless wire + composite head gasket.

      @@Smeedia 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💙🤘🏽🤙🏽🤘🏽 I'm super proud as a car guy you didn't take the easy way out stuck with it building a new platform in advance in it as will help the import racing scene In the beginning people like you taking the chances leading the way so other people can follow and not go through the same issues and have a strong platform hurting people's feelings out there on the streets taking down v8s

    Is custom-made gasket a thing?
    Like what would be used for high-powered race engines...?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes and no, most companies have told me no. They don’t wanna spend the money on tooling for a low volume market. They’d loose money on tooling vs what they’d sell.
      This I ring option should hopefully hold better

    Is this diy gasket really the best solution? If it doesn't work, is the block done? Sounds like a half measure. How about getting it professionally machined for a proper fire ring gasket. Do it right, do it once.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  5 месяцев назад

      Same process that machine shops used, instead of using a Mill I’m just doing it by hand with the tool designed for it

      @roblloyd2432 5 месяцев назад

      @@Smeedia You could get purpose-built rings with a specially designed profile and gaskets designed to work with them. I'd think the result of sandwiching some copper wire under an MLS gasket not designed for that could be quite different.
