- We are finally laying down some color on my 1998 Subaru 2.5RS that we are turning into a 22B clone! This has literally been weeks in the making prepping this chassis for paint. But the time is finally here! We are spraying the car in World Rally Blue (O2C) using some Eastwood Paint. This is the first time I have sprayed any type of pearl paint, But it came out SO insanely good!

The more I use that paint gun the better I feel about it and the results just get better 🙌
Way better than a battery tray. And did it once it can be done again.. if it bothers you after done you can always pay more attention to the areas of need. The good thing is you will have metal to work with in the future..
Very true! I think I could have smoothed out some of the edges a bit more. But I don’t think it’ll bother me too much. I think that’s where I’m going to put the dry sump tank anyway 😅
Most ppl dont realize how much control and pations it takes to use a paint sprayer👍🏽. It's easy goof up. Once someone gets the hang of it, it's satisfying. Really looking forward to seeing this beauty unfold.
Practice reeeeeeally helps with using one, first few times I thought it was just point and spray 😂

It’ll come out even better if you sand the paint after your three coats (on body panels) sand it down with 1000 or 1200 grit. Then spray clear coat and when it’s all done, sand and buff clear coat . Gives you a really deep blue result. Deeeeep deep

It is soooo satisfying painting world rally blue. 02C. I did it years ago on my Nissan Altima 😂. And I loved every part of it.
It’s nice to be spraying clear on an actual color, spraying clear on white like I did before was rough 😂
As I own a 98 Type-R in 74F color this blue paint hitting the chassis really made this video even more special for me. Hope this car comes out really good and really hoping for some golden wheels too 🤩
74F is such an Og color, I almost did it for this one 😅 haven’t decided on wheels yet but we got options 💪
You'd ove my paint mixing setup. I used a 6 inch piece of 2x4 and made soft jaws with a gal bucket diameter arch cut into them. That way I can use a small drill attachment (1 gal helix mixer can get at Lowes) and the can doesn't slosh around. Then I just have a jar of mineral spirits i dunk it into. *be careful of drill type, some openly spark or arc*

Absolutely insane how much progress you’ve made on learning to paint. I might be sending my gd to the body shop to have the rear quarter fixed. It has a big dent/rust . And someone just side swiped it again. Thankfully insurance paid me for it.

As someone from New England, seeing those exposed a-pillars makes me cringe thinking about surface rust 😂. Typically I clean it up, admire the bare metal, then immediately cover it with paint
They might flash rust a little bit but they’ll have to get prepped again anyway 😅

@@Smeediaeverything.. haha very similar plan to yours if my observation is correct , I want to wide body it interior swap to a black interior less important just can’t stand tan . Then am tossed between a ej257 and sti trans, or go old school and do an jdm ej207, I would love to grab a built motor from iag and a Blouch turbo or jb400 from Grimmspeed , obviously supporting mods as well but unfortunately I have a big problem and want multiple cars and I would paint it the original forest green to be different don’t see much coupes green , recently purchased an 06 rsx type s for a daily but I keep making it to nice lol pushing my coupe to the back burner … if all goes well and I can turn my head to the coupe again I hope it turns out as well as your coupe!

Also you do well at implementing all the new techniques success is inevitable when someone is coachable. I’m doing this to my 85 rx turbo sti swapped. Just a little slower paced lol. Always gets me inspired.. can’t wait to see this finished it’s gonna be awesome.
I’m always open to more tips and tricks with things. There is no room for improvement unless someone is open to critique. 85rx turbo sounds like a sweet project! Where are you at on the build?
@@Smeedia I have merged harnesses, built the motor 100mm forged 9:1 comp with 4:44 5 speed trans from 06-07 jdm wrx, basically it’s running and driving and have worked all the bugs out, I street tuned it on Tactrix open source and am at 18 psi and out of turbo since I ported the d25 heads, it’s a total Frankenstein. and now while driving it, I am doing the metal work, fixing rust spot at a time, the last thing to do before paint is the rear sub frame and skid pans, but I made it accepts all the parts from 09-14 wrx because it fit the best, and I widened each side out by 30mm so I could run stock axles, it’s # 82 out of the right hand drive models. But it’s the first year of the wrx basically. The first rally specific platform so I feel like it deserves to be saved. I’m on the Oregon coast so when I got it she had some rust problems but for 250 bucks for a shell, I couldn’t pass it up .

Man. You've come a loooong way from where you were when i started watching you a few years ago. Really coming along. You should look into getting a cheap fold up rotisserie if you're going to be doing more of these. Between this and the RX7 it looks like you will... it frees you up in a lot of ways. It allows you to come in through the door with the car on its side so you can keep that HVLP upright.
My neighbors have one in their shop I can use. I just haven’t yet. But next time I think I’ll be pulling it out 😅

Just bought a 98 RS (WRB) and plan to start getting it down to barebones for paint before I built a 22B clone. I hadn't seen you guys doing this series but just got the notification for this video. Ironic...or should I say the Almighty Google has brought me here to you 😂 anyway, this idea has always been a cool thought to me when I was younger as I knew I'd never be able to afford the car I was infatuated with like so many others, the 1998 Subaru Impreza STI 22B. It's awesome to see someone else go through what I've been excited but also extremely nervous about! Keep up the awesome work!! 🤘💪
It’s a car a ton of us have wanted for so long. A real 22B is a little out of budget, but dammit we can build our own 💪

I'm not gonna lie. I always forget how good wrb looks when it's clean and fresh... The dark Grey base had me all mystified.. I swore they gave you the steel Grey metallic base.. I bet this paint would be awesome in a matte or satin clear coat finish. But I'm glad you stuck with the gloss over metallic. This thing is gonna be minty

I would have created a "release" for the battery tray, so it doesn't build up any moisture or dirt excessively.

Great work again, very sexy. Most pearl and metal flake paints do rec dark base coats. The color I suggested for the rx7 actually wants black base to help give more pop in the curves

@@Smeedia white still looks goodbut this will help be bold on another curvy project car. Z car, porsche 924, s2k, 90s lexus all look great with bold colors lots of pearl or flake
If your gun needs 30-40 psi set the compressor pressure a bit higher cause it will go down. And set the pressure at the gun regulator to needed psi.
That’s normally how I set em up, i unintentionally have 3 regulators in line 😂

Good stuff man. If you decide to upgrade your paintgun definitely consider a top feed hplv satajet for at least base and clear. Would benefit control, comfortability, all parts cleanable/reusable, atomizes efficiently, shop standard.. also wanted to mention, there’s some clear coats out there that cure completely within 24 hours without baking. I tried out the sherwin Williams when it first came out ages ago. Was pretty wild to be able to handle within 45 min in 75deg booth.
Geez I wish I could tear mine down and do an abw 30mm wrc kit.
Ps when you spray the pearl pull back on the gun off the panel on the last coats so the pearls fall naturally so you don’t have striping.
Will do! Souls hopefully make a bit of a difference when painting the exterior 💪

Here is a little bit of professional help. Say about 6 inch's away from the panels . Spray your base around 25 PSI and clear coat at 32 PSI. Hope this helps you a little bit.

I don't have any affiliation with them, but I've only ever heard excellent reports about their products. They can custom tune and they're pretty affordable!

Makes sense to me your “base” coat was grey - for O2C WR Blue at least, you start w a G6 grey.

Could try a mass loaded barrier, the non-adhesive kind. I’d hate the thought of the beautiful paint job on the interior wrapped in sound deadening. My STI has none on the floor just whatever the carpet comes with but what I notice on Subaru’s like the GD’s and GC’s is hella noise comes from the trunk area and firewall so I’ve been planning on blanketing my rear seat with a mat I already did sound deadening in the trunk. Honestly though, it wasn’t worth it unless I did every square inch of the trunk.

Good sh!t man! Get your overlap a little tighter. And you’ll continue to get better results! Should be 70ish%overlap that’s your issue with dry spray. When spraying paint it’s about consistency. Do you have fan adjustment can’t tell?

@@Smeedia perfect! Needle nose or like make the spray pattern a dot it and spray from a further distance to put paint on the tighter areas that’s where it’s kinda nice to do it dry and make it wet with more coats if that makes sense more trigger finge r

Dawg, use some tape on your paint cans. Make a little V lip or whatever for your pour from masking tape, never get paint running down the side of the can again.

@@Smeedia I've known enough painters in my days, it's a pro tip for sure. On that note, I can't say I'm surprised WRB has a gunmetal-ish base coat, just based on my knowledge of painting. Even if that's all from painting stuff like scale models and whatnot, same shit applies.
