Here in Germany it's actually cheaper, because it's not 1st grade asparagus. (People here are really quite snobbish about this. I like the purple one the most, but the green is very close. They don't taste that different, and the purple is a reddish purple, and very dark. A bit like blue/red cabbage(I don't know the English translation). Is there like a difference in taste, texture, or nutritional value between green or white asparagus? 😅 This video didn't address it. From my understanding, these are the same plants, except one is exposed to sunlight. It just seems like extra steps to harvest white asparagus if there isn't any major differences 😮
Exactly. Actually here in Germany when we talk about asparagus we always mean the white one. If you want the other one you'll have to specify you want green asparagus.
I never understood why people are so enthusiastic about white asparagus. I prefer the thin and green ones (salted and slightly grilled with a drizzle of olive oil 🤤)
The same is true for cauliflower actually, farmers used to tie their leaves around the head to prevent them from turning green, but in recent years we've bred cauliflowers that wrap their leaves around themselves, pretty neat!

This seems like way too much work. Why do we have to have white asparagus? Doesnt the green one taste good? Why does the color matter? I have never eaten it, so please, someone tell me? I have seen it in stores but never bought it.
1) White is not a color. (2) Green asparagus is more nutritious because of the chlorophyll. (3) I never noticed it to be bitter. I smother it in butter and salt and pepper. Yuuuummmm!

They taste different is all. White asparagus is not bitter and instead has a mild, slightly sweet and almost creamy flavour. It's delicious in salads or just eaten with dijon mayonnaise lol
you know green asparagus is not the only source of chlorophyll, right? White asparagus is more tasty, zero bitterness and a slight creamy mouth feeling just serve them along with some kind of green beans as side dish you health nut

Dark cycle
The asparagus plant is a crown that produces multiple canes. The photosynthesis happens from the unharvested canes that are allowed to fully develop.
Well from my experience white asparagus is always bigger than green and is more uniform looking. Where as green can be super skinny or thick af

I'll take green every time, more nutritious, and I'd rather eat a plant, or anything, that wasn't stressed when harvested, you can taste it.

Wait... is this voiced by Elizabeth from Storynory? I love how she reads Norse myths. If this aint her, they sound a lot alike.
Forced rhubarb in the UK uses the same concept, the rhubarb deprived of sunlight has a higher sugar content.
Chlorophyll is the beneficial part of vegetables. Why is man always messing with creation.
Seems like too much work just to get the same thing as a green one tbh...
Green color is the good stuff
White is premature less nutrients
WHY DOES IT TURN PURPLE THO
The thing looks sick. Theres a reason it needs sunlight. Leave it to humans to fix something that aint broken.
They over price the hell out of it making us think they’re healthier when it’s literally the same shit lol wow. Smh
I would think without chlorophyll, this makes the white one a zombie. Ewh.
I have no idea why they do it - white asparagus tastes worse for me, more earthy - now I know why 😂
Green looks so much nicer. Why would anyone want bland white?
Because it tastes better.
How do the asparagus grow if they aren't allowed to photosynthesize?

Why is white asparagus such a big thing in German culture?
Does it has the same nutrients as the green ones?? I don't think so.
We NEED chlorophyll.
Yes chlorophyll has most of the vitamins you get in your green vegetables. Why keep it out?

3 times the price for a discoloration. I’ll pass.
Then how did it grow upto that, does it have stored nutrition
Probably less nutritious than green.
