While living in Germany in the 80s and 90s I lived next to a farmer who grew asparagus that would cover the spears once they broke through the soil. Every morning they would walk down the rows and cover the emerging spears, high and higher until fully grown. When ready they would harvest long thick heavy white spears of asparagus that were amazingly tender. He sold to many of the local Gasthaus. Best I have ever eaten.

@@lazygardens - First of all, he lives in a country were there is no significant cold weather, like the Philippines, or southern California, or Southeast Asia because his plants are growing all year 'round. Second, he added egg shells for calcium, and later added a time release fertilizer - Asparagus are heavy feeders. When he trims the plants he takes ALL but one mature stem each time - he did this at 4 months, 8 months, and then 12 months - this gave the plants time to produce good root growth. If you harvest for your own use, you should stagger your planting so you have a container to harvest each month, because after harvest you need to let the plant grow so it can produce plenty of shoots at the next pruning.

Yes! You need to weed them around springtime especially when it dries up. I’m still waiting for mine to give me harvest. It’s been close to two years. Once they start fruiting they will give you yield for many years. I heard from some people, their asparagus patch is 99 years old. It’s been pass down to them. I’m not much into vegetables gardening. I love perennial flowers.
The only vegetable I grow every year is garlic and herbs and my additional , Asparagus. It’s cancer fighting vegetable. Amazing!
