I remember reading about Eltonbrand on early 2000s "cheat" websites and thinking it was the dumbest fake rumor ever, on par with Mew being under the truck in Pokemon. Then I found Eltonbrand in the Morrowind Construction Set data and was totally shocked.

Dude I played Morrowind back not long after it came out and all my friends were really into it as well. I could call them if I got stuck lol sounds cheesy now.
But sometimes you just had to grind grind grind. And sometimes give up and come back to it later if at all. I still remember this half flooded temple with all these riddles and a giant energy shield blocking a certain area. I tried for MONTHS but couldn't figure it the fuck out. 15 years later I still think about it. The Devs were smart with this one in particular cause they made the shield wall in such a way you couldnt glitch past it. Plus this was before we figured out the console commands.

Morrowind came out in 2002, everyone with a gaming pc had dialup. Some already had DSL which was marketed as ‘broadband’. There were plenty of gaming forums. In particular there’s little the moderators and regulars on Gamespy’s Morrowind forum did not know about the game.

@@Theclaidheamhmor I used dial-up in the late 90s, by 2002 I had dsl. In general it’s true you couldn’t get gaming information just as easily as now, but in particular Morrowind forum members were knowledgable and dedicated, almost fanatical about the game. I remember the long defunct Game-spy forum regulars included some well respected modders. Pre-Reddit, useful gaming forums were a little harder to find I’m not denying it, but there was still a lot going on.

Eltonbrand is a reference to basketball actually, named after NBA player Elton Brand.
    Taken from UESP:
The odd nature of this sword seems to stem from Bethesda developer Mark Nelson. The NBA basketball player Elton Brand was a member of his favorite team in college, the Duke Blue Devils (itself referred to by his nickname "BlueDev", and the object ID of the sword), whose most bitter rivals are the North Carolina Tar Heels. The number "11171" is thought to be a reference to Nelson's birthday, 11/1/1971. The name of the quest, "Shashev's Key", is also a reference to the long-time coach of the Blue Devils, Mike Krzyzewski, whose last name is pronounced "shə-SHEF-ski".

What probably happened is someone found Eltonbrand in the construction set, and dug into the scripts that cause it to spawn. If not, it could have just been happenstance after someone talked to half the NPC's in the game to find one that'll actually talk to you.

    • @StephenRWilliams

Large open world RPGs like these had lots of volunteer beta testers (sometimes dozens or hundreds). Developers would talk to the beta testers and give them instructions to test certain quests or other things specifically. So a number of people in the community would have prior knowledge of quests and how they worked, then they would go on forums and talk about it, and the knowledge spreads into the general community from there.

The way to make most of Creeper and Mudcrab Merchant, when selling items they cannot afford right away, is to also take items in return, and then later sell them back, once their gold reserves are replenished. So let's say you want to sell an item worth 10 000 to the Creeper, who only has 5000. So sell it, but take back items worth 5000 in total to make up for the real value, and then sell tgem back to get the remaining 5000. This way you will get the full 10 000 from a merchant, who only had 5000 / day to spend.

I don’t know if some of the mods might mess around with the vampire quests and the few times I’ve done them, I’ve stuck to the “mage vampires” (as I played as a magic focused character), but I never experienced any particular problems with those vampire quests.
The only issues I can think of might be the “kill X number of vampires from other clans”, if you’ve already cleared out a lot of vampires before the quest starts (as it will not count these towards your tally, the quest might be impossible to complete).
Sure, some of them might be a bit odd (e.g. one dealing with a young Dunmer whose mother wants you to convince him NOT to become a vampire, where you basically has to take a dive so he’ll think vampires are wimps), but I haven’t found them to be broken.
Bear in mind, though, that it seems that the game is expecting you not to go vampire until you’ve got some levels under your belt (and possibly some tricks up your sleeve, such as the Boots of Blinding Speed and navigation via Recall and Almsivi/Divine Intervention).
Also, if you want to become a vampire, casting Weakness to Common Disease on yourself will make the likelihood of catching it far greater (incl. via the “check a vampire corpse’s inventory until you catch it” approach).

The construction kit makes it easy to see how the game is built. If you were searching for what weapons exist, you'd find eltonbrand. And then you'd want to figure out where in the game it is. Under the item, it will tell you how many instances exist in the world. When you see that none exist in the world, you'd look for it in quests, since that would be the most likely way to add an item that doesn't have an instance in the world.
I love the construction kit. You could build a whole new game with it if you wanted.

It’d have to be incredibly high drop. I should’ve added in there that you’re acrobatic skill takes an additional 20+ after becoming a vampire.

Yes, if you interact with a diseased corpse, whether that be a creature or a vampire, you have a small percentage chance of catching the disease they have. When you repeatedly open the inventory menu of the corpse, the game rolls the infection roll every time. The chance is really small, less than 1%, so you're gonna need to keep repeating the process quite the few times. The bloodline of the vampire affects which kind of vampire you will become, and each clan has their own unique quests and a base, so it is important to know what is the bloodline of the vampire you are dealing with. I used to do it so, that I would just let the vampire attack me enough times, keeping myself alive with spells and potions, just to keep all members of my future clan "alive" (as far as vampires go), but the search trick is safer and easier.

You can get deadric stuff in skyrim really early, but it's very tedious. You have to find a way to powerlevel conjuration to 90, which will probably grant you a few levels by itself, and then you talk to Phinis Gestor in Winterhold. He'll give you a quest where you can summon an unbound dremora and beat him up until he gives you a sigil stone, and then using the sigil stone you can put it in the atronach forge. Then you need to find a way to get ebony gear, so powerlevel smithing, getting you probably a few more levels, then head to Narzlebur or Raven Rock and mine ebony like your life depends on it and make ebony gear. THEN you need to find a few deadra hearts. Go to the shrine of Mehrunz Dagon if you want that. THENN you need some centurion Dynamo cores. So off to Blackreach with you!
Once you combine them, you get Deadric armor. And you're only level 6 or something by the end, assuming you start level one.
