This is the only decent review of this thing. The tech head reviewers are all "Ooh, it's no good for 4K video editing", "Ooh, it doesn't have dedicated graphics", "Ooh, the lid flexes when you twist it", "Ooh, it doesn't feel as premium as the Dell XPS". They are, as we say in the UK, a bunch of wankers. There is nothing else like it on the market unless, as you say, you want a refrigerator. Managed to track one down in the UK (for some reason the thing is as rare as hens teeth over here) and I am well pleased. Good job fellah.

You can buy an eGPU to go with it and that actually turns the Gram into a pretty powerful editing machine. As for the flexing, that’s small potatoes.

I just bought one, after lusting after them for a year at Costco. It appears that it is quickly replacing my MacBook Pro 13. I concur with everything said here. This is a great value in a great form factor. The only downside for me is the cheap speakers. I minimized the WIndows partition and installed native Linux. I'm getting 10 hours of battery. I just ordered a 1TB NVMe to extend the disk space.

The reason why LG is underrated would be that it doesn't spend much on advertisement like Samsung. Product itself, LG is wonderful. So as a consumer, sincerely Im glad that I can get products of better quality at a cheaper price.

Best review ever. I have TWO of these laptops and they are by far best laptops I've ever had. Every other review is like "who needs such big laptop?? And the few people who do need a big laptop need more power." I bought a gen 1 Gram 17 to share with my gf and loved ti so much I bought another gram 17 as soon as gen 2 came out so we could each have one. I would say this is the perfect laptop for 80% of people I know. I suppose about 20% of people I know have more unique requirements requiring either more portability or more power (or they are just fully entrenched in the Apple ecosystem).

I've had my Gram for a couple of months now - they aren't for sale in Australia so had to order it from overseas - and I just love it! I set the Thunderbolt port to charge and bought a Baseus powered expansion hub (Baseus Type-C HUB Adapter AC Multifunctional Charger) so I can load photos from my SD card and charge it (cutting down on desk clutter) from the same device. The screen is superb, and the light weight still takes me by surprise. So many great things about this device. Absolutely no regrets about getting this machine. Linux runs beautifully on it, and is far more responsive than Windows.

Hi! thanks for the video. I am in a big dilema now. I'm waiting for the new Dell XPS 17 laptop to be launched, but I feel this is going to cost more than 4k. I will use the laptop. for development in WordPress, and maybe some light video edition in Adobe Premiere. The rest will be internet browsing and productivity tasks, videocalls, etc.
Do you think is worth to wait for the XPS 17? Or this laptop can make it? I just discovered thanks to you (so you are right in your video), and literally fall in love (of the laptop).
Another quick question, can the laptop be charged with USB-C? and connected to 2 external screens at the same time?

I highly recommend buying an anti-glare screen protector as it basically fixes the glare problem, makes the screen fingerprint and dust resistant, and I find that it also makes the screen more pleasant to look at. I got one for $17 off Amazon for my 17 inch screen www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081T3KQ4J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=jsb0c89-20 It only comes with one though, so make sure you install it perfectly (ie. fitting the screen just right, no air bubbles) because if you screw up, then taking it off and reapplying won't work because you'll get too many air bubbles (I learned this the hard way and had to buy another one). I just bought the first screen protector I saw off Amazon with decent reviews though, let me know if there are better alternatives.

As I don't know much about LG gram range would like to ask few things, why did you choose LG Gram 17 and not for example LG Gram 15 which would be closer to your XPS 15 ? how is the real battery life on it, you mention 10+ hours, is it on real usage, meaning I am a programmer, sound, video editor.so need a portable device, that can handle tasks. not extremelly loads but code come in or I develop and test daily + audio, video edits. that typical day and work load. So i need to go through day without a charger because I move and enjoy flexibility. @@JDiculous1 I'm just curious of the diference in real world. 2020 gram 17 is around 4/5 milimeters wider then avaridge 15.6 laptop (thats sounds like nothing but would be interesting to see visualy when comparing) and older xps 15 (with 16/9 ratio) is way smaller, but more dense than that. Just wondering if it would be a good replacement. Diference while traveling (compared to 15.6) and diference in something bit more demanding then warcraft 3. Maybe photoshop, lightroom and few hours of borderlands 2 here and there 😅

@@ryancyt I bought this one over 2 years ago. I still like the laptop, but it could be a little bit faster. When I'm doing software dev on the Ubuntu VM with Docker, it's usable but not the most performant. Adobe Premiere not the fastest either, though again usable. I will look into the latest LG Gram 17 to see if it's enough of a performance boost, while also looking at competition.
Also a couple days ago one of the keys on my keyboard fell off, and when trying to put it back on one of the pieces broke. All I need is a simple plastic piece, but none of the repair shops here in Rome have this piece. Ordered one online from some shady looking website, but there's a chance it might not work. Since I work, I can't afford to just ship off my laptop, so maybe not a bad idea to have a backup laptop anyways.

This week, I got my LG Gram 17 with the 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. First impressions:
    1. It's light for a 17" laptop, but not crazy light. It's still a laptop.
    2. The build quality is good. Reviewers show how flexible it is, but I don't think you'd notice it unless you look for it. The only thing I'd say is that the hinge is not quite as stiff as I would like. If you tried using it on a train or plane, it might bother you. On a desk it is stable.
    3. The screen is glossy. (How I wish it was matt!) I got a screen protector to reduce the reflectivity, but I couldn't get it on without air bubbles (which I hate even more), so for now I'm living with the gloss. But it's fantastic having a 17" screen for productivity (and day trading). And it's clear and bright. It's overall a good panel.
    4. Keyboard: It's okay, apart from a couple of differences from a standard UK keyboard layout. In particular: the way the "|" key is situated adjoining the Left Shift key; and the horizontal Return key (which means I sometimes hit the "#" key by mistake). But the typing experience is good so far.
    5. Okay, so it's not a powerhouse. I bought it knowing that it would be fine for productivity, but not expecting to do anything particularly demanding.
    6. It was a bit laggy on first use. I did a clean install of Windows... and now it's running perfectly.
    7. The sound is okay. It's fine, if not anything special.
So far, I'm happy with my purchase, but these things I would change if I could redesign it for next year:
    - matt screen (!)
    - stiffer hinge
    - slightly better, upward firing speakers
    - keyboard layout
    - an Ethernet port would be nice, rather than the Dongle provided...
    - And a more powerful CPU would be nice. Ideally, a Ryzen CPU with their better integrated graphics would be fab.

16:9 is the shorter aspect ratio - 16:10 is taller.
What's with the tinny speakers? If Apple can cram significantly better audio in a space-limited iPad Pro 9.7, LG should be able to work wonders with the space they have in there.
The main reason for buying this laptop is that it "won't decimate your sperm count"!

I have heard some good things about the speakers so it is odd that you say they are not good. Do you have teh 2021 model. I think you have the 2020 model, and you don't know much about laptop speakers because some are much better than others, so you just can't say those are just like any other laptop speakers. I am sorry it is obvious you have not done msuch research for this review

    • @JDiculous1
      @JDiculous1  2 года назад

If you looked at the upload date you'd see that the video was uploaded January 5th, 2020.
I've probably owned 5-7 laptops in my life, this laptop (2019/2020 model) has by far the worst speakers of any laptop I've owned. Much of that is because the speakers are below the laptop (so it sounds better if I turn it upside down). That is just my honest opinion, and in this review there is a speaker test so you can draw your own conclusions. If you were expecting me to go out and analyze the laptop speakers of every other laptop on the market and then tell you where LG ranks, yea sorry I didn't do that, nor did I ever claim to.
