I thought the plastic was going to be pre-camoed because I'm new to Gunpla I didn't know they didn't do that and I had to apply water slides. I failed to do water slides in every part other than the shoulder shield and the mono eye, I didn't attempt to do it until I learned how to do it right...it still without decals.
Love the look of the Zaku in its desert camo scheme but I took one look at the decals and the marking guide in the instructions and decided this kit was a great reason to learn how to paint camouflage spots with an airbrush. Even if they're water slides, applying those looks like an exercise in frustration and I build Gunpla to relax, not to get stressed out. Still need to get me some masking putty and the right shade of brown but I've got seven kits in the backlog cue before I get to this one. So with the rate I build that's a problem for 2023 me to deal with.
I really hate the water decals from this kit. I had applied many water decals before so I know how to do it. But for this kit, the decals don't stick or too easily rip apart.
I dont get how bandai decals are both thick, extra large transfer excess, and yet still end up ripping or peeling or just silvering despite the 10th softer application.
Just curious how often do you end up painting the kits after you review them? You review so much that I can't imagine spending the time to get them all painted would definitely stress me out lol
as much as I love the look of this kit and yet still have to build it . the price was pretty high specially buying from a US based Estore at $50 I hope Bandai may see a way to release it for more mass release as I would like to army build this suit as this and the Zaku Cannon are both my fav designs
Just a tip, watch Pbandai for another run of it. Those online stores price gouge the shit out of these kits. They're half that price on bandai directly and the shipping is flat cost.
As a zeon ms builder I have thought about paying the resell prices for this kit before, but not being a fan of waterslides and not having the mindset of attempting to paint the camo patterns means its a hard sell. Perhaps is the pbandai usa store ends up having a rerun preorder for cheaper some years down the line. Oddly enough so far I only have the char c6 zaku II from the origin line so I haven't got the "its the same zaku build" syndrome yet.
I applied the camo decals. It was... not fun. The result is ok. I don't mind normal marking decals but applies large decals over curved surfaces was a nightmare.
Nah not really. You could maybe lay wife strips of masking take on the decal sheet and trace and cut out the shapes from the masking tape and use those for masking your camo
Building the kit was fine the water slides were fucking awful. The flat surfaces are okay to apply but the big camo pieces that go over multiple surfaces and different angles look awful. They probably made it look worst honestly

I'm already a huge zaku fan, but give it a desert color scheme and I'm in love. I built this kit but didn't attempt the water slides.
I got both p.bandai origin desert zakus and they're worth every penny. Super fun to build, great detail and really posable!
have you applied the water decals to the double antenna? It seems like a difficult task

Bandai water decals are usually too thin and fragile for my taste. Oddly enought, 3rd party decals are better most of the time

it's funny how the cucuruz doan's zaku got a mono eye internal detail update but not this one

The technology just doesn't exist for them to do a mixed color injection like that. It's just not how the machines work.
