Nice breakdown, but there's an issue with your 'problem' with Golden Parry. The fact that it starts quicker is in no way disadvantageous, even if you're used to the timing of the other parries. The first parry frame is the earliest of all the parries, yes, but its last parry frame is also the latest of all the parries, tied with all the other Ash of War parries. If you hit the button at the same time, Golden Parry will never miss a parry a different parry would have hit.

Also the fp cost is easily offset with the talisman you get off of black knife assassin in lucaria. Seriously you can never run out of fp with it unless you carelessly spam parry for no reason lol. You parry and you stab you get fp back you spent on the parry.

it depends to some people react to parrys by knowing the attack and specting it or by reflex i react by reflex so i rather have a fast wind up but if i know what attack is coming i rather have the slow wind up because is ''safer'' it all comes to preferences but its good to know what you said about golden parry something to keep in mind

    • @heyimanameheyimalastname
      @heyimanameheyimalastname 2 года назад +76

@@altair658 Dude you're not getting it, it's never "safer" to use anything else because of how long the Golden Parry lasts. I'll break it down even further to help you understand: say you're using the slowest parry shield, a normal medium shield parry, and an attack is going to hit on frame 30. And say you'd usually parry on frame 14 - the windup is 13 frames, so the parry frames start on frame 27 and lasts until frame 32. If you instead used the Golden Parry and parried at the exact same time, the parry frames would start on frame 22 which is much earlier, but would last until frame 36. You could even start 4 frames earlier with Golden Parry, and it would still end at the same time as the normal medium shield parry. No matter what the situation, if you use any other parry and it's successful, then the Golden Parry would have been successful too

As a tip to those who can squeeze it into their build - golden parry costs 4 FP, the assassin cerulean dagger talisman restores 15 FP per crit. As long as the enemy you're fighting is riposteable you'll be able to continuously parry

If you activate a parry against a wall while riding an elevator (like the first elevator you come up and there isn't a gap between the elevator and the wall) the shield will spark during the active parry frames. Very good way to get a visual of when the parry starts and stops working.

A tip of timing the parry - try not to look at the weapon so much but rather pay attention to the hand movement of the enemy, for example: click parry button when you see the hand start going towards your character. Try practicing on the normal swordsman enemy by the merchant Kale at the start of the game, you will see what I mean, its much easier to hit when you pay attention to the hand movement rather than the weapon. (don't parry when the hand is moving away from your character---- DO parry when it starts coming towards your character). This is especially noticeable with enemies like the Crucible knights. And btw, I only know this works well with buckler and Carian Retaliation.. dont know about other shields.

Golden parry hard counters Rivers of Blood, it was never OP, and neither were great shield turtle pokers or dual spears.
Any build can use it and you can put it on a 1 weight shield. golden parry makes them all trivial.
Now can we move on and talk about an actually broken weapon the colossal sword's crouch poke. when 2 handed it cant be parried (unlike the rolling R1 poke from DS3) it comes out faster than a halberd poke and it does full colossal poise/stagger damage so it true combos into pretty much anything.
Go take a look at some of the red summon signs at Academy Gate, you'll see more greatswords than any other weapon by far.

I have seen people say the reason parrying seems so inconsistant between differetn people testing is that parry frams suffer from frame drops causing you to lose multiple active frames e.g. dropping 1 frame can cost you 1 or more parry frames so worst case is a medium shield could lose all its parry frames because it has so few if you drop from 60 to 59 for even a moment.
The other thing I have seen people say is your other weapon that is equiped effects your delay when parry frames start and can cause the frames to end early too due to animation loops
either way I see parrying as under whelimg and while it can be good when mastered you can get better results by focusing on other aspects of the game, to those who enjoy it good for you I hope ou have fun but I think something is off with it and needs fixing. The risk/reward for parrying is too heavly weighted to high risk and not enough reward/payoff for the increased risk.

The bottom line to all of the strategy videos is the right tool for the right job, and knowing how to use each tool. For every boss and NPC understanding their weakness and strengths will tell you which tool to use. When I get a new weapon, I like to go back to old areas and practice on weaker foes while gathering resources and runes to level up. At 500 hours, I’m just now learning to Perry with a shield. 😂

I'm struggling to understand a couple of things:
    1. Do magical parries like the Carian Parry still parry normal, physical attacks? Or does it ONLY parry spells?
    2. Once FP is consumed in special parries like Golden Parry, does the shield still parry normally or does it do the animation but no parry applies?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @leonardoknecht7230

I can't tell on the version of the game now but
      1. Carian parry can parry normal attacks without FP consuption (even with more frames), only consumes FP on spells.
      2. Once out of FP all ashes of war parrys will be converted to regular parry, so normal parrys are still on, but with les frames.

I just fought the crucible knight duo, I tried the buckler parry and the golden parry. Although the timing was easier on Ordovis with the normal buckler parry, it was so much easier to parry the knight with the spear with golden parry. I ended up using Golden and just relearned the timings on the sword knight and it worked (i've always found parrying thrust weapons difficult, especially spears, since DS3 days). It it just me that really struggles with parrying thrust attacks? I'm so much better with swings/slams

Carian Retaliation is the best parry imo. It's great for anti-mages and gives you extra damage to boot. Can force dodge roll catching in PvP if you parry a spell and follow up with a good roll catcher. And deals pretty good damage in PvE even after the patch. Nowhere near the old 10k damage with the Carian Knight's Shield, but over all very reliable. Golden Parry is slightly more situational. Really good if you're getting ganged in PvP.
Side note: You can parry spells as well with the Erdtree Greatshield. Isn't a weapon parry but can come in handy with certain situations with the high damage tracking projectile it shoots out.

I've always used a hit and fade play style. That being said I am now seeing the advantage towards these actions. But how are they done with weapons? I've never been one for use of any type of shield.
