For those that want more information on your options. Killing him doesn't have a huge impact if you kill after the Godrick fight but you will miss out on 1 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone that he sells later for 20000 runes.
"If you kill Gostoc beforehand (Godrick), you won't be locked into the room containing the Rusty Key."
"However, you can kill him to get his Bell and give it to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold to allow them to sell his stock. At this point he will not drop runes he stole from you, to retrieve the runes it is necessary to kill him before defeating Godrick. His shop does re-open at a later point."
"Killing Gostoc will not lock you out of Nepheli Loux and Kenneth Haight's quest as it can still be completed without him, but you will miss out on the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and won't be able to buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks even if you gave them his bell bearing."
      From the wiki

In previous Souls games, the general rule of thumb was that any enemy with a weapon that was roughly the size of the player (slightly smaller or slightly larger), you could parry it. You could not parry claws, tails, or anything else that wasn't a weapon. You also could not parry massive enemies. I have no idea how many of these rules remain the same for Elden Ring, but that was the old standard.

Inside the Volcano Manor, you can find the Dagger Talisman, which increases the power of critical hits, which may be particularly useful for this build (along with the HP/FP on Crit Talismans).
I can't recall the exact location, but it is located behind a stonesword key door INSIDE one of the buildings, leading to a massive room with dangling cages. Rather than dropping down onto the cages, turn right, drop down near the candles and explore this new area a bit. The Talisman is on a corpse.

If you put Carian Retaliation Ash of War on any shield, the parry is the same. Not only is Carian Retaliation the best parry (it has waaay more active frames and a fast start up), but it also can parry spells and other magic attacks. Because it is just an Ash of War you can put it on a new shield you want to use and the timing will be the same.

Limgrave, Gate Front Grace is the best place to practice early in the game. Enemies there have spear, sword, hammer w/ various strong & light attacks. FYI the Carian Retaliation Ash of War parry starts frame 8 & has 14 frames while the plain old buckler starts at 8 & has 11 frames. If u use it to parry a physical attack, Carian Parry doesn't cost any FP & using w/a medium shield won't change anything and u still have 100 protection if u block & parry (natural for PC KB/Mouse users but awkward for controllers)

The Storm Wall, Carian Retaliation, and Golden Parry ashes of war all parry the same on medium or small shields. And their parry is the small shield or buckler one (depending on art). In other words, they're very good. In particular, Carian Retaliation costs 0 FP unless it actually deflects a spell, despite also acting as a buckler parry, so slap that on a medium shield with 100% physical block to have your cake and eat it too. Storm Wall is available earlier, though, so maybe start with that if you're going medium.

One tip I will always say; when you successfully land a parry always walk forwards toward their body then press the light attack button. I have done many a tests in this regard and had the most success with this advice.
Also as an additional note there are some enemies that are parryable but not reposted/critical so if you come across that you aren't doing anything wrong and it is just the game design

    • @Swarm509

When you say walk towards them is this because you will be out of range of the critical hit move and just do a normal swing/damage?

@@Swarm509 as you were swinging, moving when you were stationnary or stopping if you were moving breaks your combo. To land a crit you have to:
      1 be in range
      2 be stationnary

I think that's what Connor tried to say.

Almost all bosses can be parry. In fact, a lot of enemies can be parried and riposte. But, most bosses, typically end game bosses need to be parried 2 or 3 times for riposte. Generally, if mobs or bosses are the same size or a bit larger than you, then yes, they can be parried. For example, the Gladiator, Crucible Knight can be parried but Gladiator is a bit harder but he can be parried. As for bosses like Radagon or mini bosses like Blaidd can also be parried but you need to parry them 2 or 3 times for riposte instead of 1. But if your enemy is a size of Gargoyle then you'd be better off destroying their stance for riposte instead. You'd need a colossal weapon (recommend dual-wielding) to destroy their stance and riposte for massive damage.
For beginner : DO NOT use Buckler or Small Shield if you're new to the game. Use Medium Shield with Parry / Golden Parry instead. And the reason is that Buckler and Small Shield are very punishing if you failed to parry. Sure, it has more parry frame than Medium Shield and a lot more on Buckler but Medium Shield provide more protection in case you've screwed up. If you're really comfortable with parrying, then switch to Small Shield or Buckler and try to go aggressive, especially if you're using Buckler. Because Small Shield has more parry frame, especially Buckler, sometime, it's easier to do "Panic Parry" and it's more rewarding to go greedy instead of waiting for parrying opportunity. After you get Golden Parry, it's best to equip it instead of normal Parry because Golden Parry provide more range, so you can hang back a bit instead of getting up close in personal to parry.

I feel like people might not know initially how to use that parry data.
Buckler is really good because it starts at 6, so you can be late, and ends at 21 so you can be early too.
Small shield you can't afford to be too late with the start at 9, but you can definitely afford to be a little early because it stops at 22/23
Medium Shield, you definitely can not be late at all, with 11 startup, but it also stops at 18 meaning you can't be early or it falls off

A year later I would actually make a 2.0 variation of a Parry guide.
The easiest way to learn how to parry is understanding that it is easier to start easy, than to jump in and take the plunge. The Parry AoW is probably the hardest parry in the game. Followed by the buckler and then golden parry. And in that order I'd actually advice to get a 100% block medium shield (best investment is the Brass Shield), but Golden Parry on it. This combo will make sure you don't get that much damage while training and you get your timing in order. Once you have that down, downgrade to the Buckler. You will take more damage if you don't get the parry, but the window is very similar to Golden Parry. After you have the buckler down, try and parry with the Ash of War, and even consider putting it on claws or a dagger. The latter two are of great help in PvP because people don't expect it.
Then last: discipline. Do NOT finish bosses until you have their parry pattern down. Do this in your NG run. Find a new humanoid you can parry? Train first, then finish the content. At some point you will notice the parry "clicks" and you get a trigger itch for it. Now, do the same thing in PvP. Golden Parry first, buckler, then a knife with the AoW.
Once you got this down, you need the final exam, which is training against all weapon types and the most dominant arts of war that people use. This will take months to train, but I can bet you all your runes: when the DLC hits, you can parry and 90% of the player base cannot. Happy invasions :)

Instead let him open the gate for you, and talk to him again. While you finish the castle he's a vendor and he locks out of his store after killing the boss till the end of the game.

Here's another way to think about parrying. Parrying is like the mini-game with a swinging pendulum where you have to hit the button when the pendulum or pointer is over a specific point. It's all about timing. One way to "git gud" is to just turtle, or block relentlessly, and pay attention to the timings from when the enemy begins its swing and when it hits your shield. After that, experiment with parrying while focusing on the limbs of your enemy and the timing that you perform each parry.
That's the way I figure it out, at least. I'm not good enough to back to back parry the crucible knight twins boss fight, but I didn't need a summon or ashes at least lol
    Good luck you maidenless wretches.
