Lost my mom last October to cancer and going back to this highlight of a perfect game on mother's day made me tear up and think of my mom as well. She truly was special.
This has to be one of the best moments in MLB history. The fact that he did it on Mother’s Day and his grandmother was there at the end to hug him is priceless.
D Mac I understand I'm late, but Armondo Galleraga(the guy that got his perfect game blown by a bad call) had an unofficial one(because of the blown call) with only 3 strikeouts.
This guy only pitched in the majors for 4 years, has a win-loss record below .500, and an era over 4.0, and yet he accomplished something that many of the very best haven't. That's wild to me.
Looking back on this is crazy as a Bay Area sports fan. Dallas Braden is now a podcast host and does color for the A’s with Kuip who called this game, and Gabe Kapler was the last out and is now the Giants manager. Time flies.
The thing that makes this so special is that it was on Mother's Day and his mother had recently passed away from cancer... That's why he was so emotional!!
His mother actually died about 10 years prior but I bet he was still very emotional thinking about his mother. His grandmother had raised him since high school.
What's weird is... a perfect game is REALLY RARE... and I saw 2 of them at Safeco Field. And I've only been to 6 MLB games in my life. A statistician should figure the odds of only going to 6 games ever and seeing 2 perfect games. Then factor in at same stadium. Then factor in both in same year.
There have been over 200,000 total regular season games in Major League Baseball, and only 23 have been perfect (should be 24). I don't know where to go from there.
People quick say who this guy or crowd was weak blah blah, y'all forgetting the fact that this man who came from the slums of stockton California and did his work from the ports to the majors and pitched a PERFECT GAME. not too many pitchers can say they did it so stfu and enjoy that anyone out of the ordinary can do something like this..
It a perfect game and Oakland was not his hometown it was Stockton and why his grandma is so emotional is because his mother passed away when he was in high school
Dallas is legitimately one of the coolest people I have ever met. I was at the Oakland Athletics fantasy camp when he came there his first time. He was hilarious, knowledgeable, and all around a good sport. He did strike me out once, but I did get a double off him to right field. I love this video and seeing his success. I also enjoy his RUclips videos and when he’s on the tv hosting games, etc.
I can't watch this video enough times. It will never get old and it will always be exciting. It helps that he's also a fantastic person and he really adds excitement and enthusiasm to the atmosphere of every A's telecast. I hope he stays with the broadcast crew for as long as they'll have him.
There's been many great A's moments, but this has to be near the top. Everyone at the restaurant I was at (Mother's Day) were anxiously watching the game, some who didn't even follow baseball. The achievement simply transcended sports. Mindbending, almost out-of-body moment.
I'm very touched to see him sharing the moment with his grandma, a lot of people don't realize what that means to family members. I don't have kids or grandkids but I understand how special that moment was for her.
The team wanted that just as bad as Braden did. Great defense from all, especially Kouzmanoff. Such an amazing moment, hugging his grandmother who helped raise him, playing for his hometown team on Mother's Day. Special.
Yeah. It's happened against the Rays 3 times in the 23 perfect games in the history of the MLB. It is _technically_ 'mostly' against the Rays, but its happened twice against 3 or 4 other teams, so it's not like the Rays have a _vast_ majority of MLB's perfect games thrown against them. I think it just _seems_ that way because in recent past, it _HAS_. Those 3 perfect games have come in the last 6 in MLB history (all 3 perfectos have come in just the last 5 years). There have been 21 perfectos since 1900, but there have been an abnormally large amount in recent history. Between 1881 and 1979, there were 7 perfect games over 98 years. Since 1980, there have been 14 perfectos over just 34 years, and 11 of those have been since 1990. In other words, there have been twice as many perfect games thrown in only 1/3 of the time. There have been 4 no hitters pitched against the Rays. There are plenty of teams that have had more thrown against them, so I'd say you are mistaken about that part. Again, it just _seems_ that way because all 4 have come in the last 5 years. They had ZERO prior to 2009. Now, the Rays have only even been in the league since 1998 or something, right? So, if you take that into account, you would probably have a case that they have had a lot of perfect games and no hitters thrown against them considering they have only been around for 16 years!!
How many MLB games have their been, total (as in ever)?? And this was only the 19th perfect game in MLB history? Wow. Just plain wow. That's something they can never take away from you, Mr. Braden. Outstanding job; very happy for you.
Watching a perfect game highlight is always so amazing because the broadcast is benign and run of the mill and some of the amazing plays being made all add up not knowing that it will end in baseball immortality… how do you not love baseball
I think the only player left from that team is Barton, and braden wasn't a bad pitcher he was just plagued by injuries, and he had one hell of a change up one of the best in the league, plus gray pickoff move
This was one of the most incredible baseball moments in my lifetime. A rod disrespected this guy in the media after running across the ound a few weeks before this, and essentially called him a nobody in the post game interview. You take that along with his mother and to see him with his grandmother, absolutely incredible. Couldnt be happier for this guy.
5:19 that “oh no!” you hear from someone in the crowd is exactly what I yelled at my TV screen from my chair in my living room of my apartment in Walnut Creek, CA (located just outside of Oakland) that day when that ball left the bat. It looked and sounded like a hit, but the defense was in the right place and made the play without much drama. What an awesome day for Dallas. I was a young man living away from my family working my first “real job” in an effort to have a career, and my mother had been battling with stage 4 breast cancer for a few months… she had to cancel our Mothers Day party because she just didn’t have the energy to do anything. I was sad and scared, and didn’t know what to do, so I just turned on the A’s game. When he recorded the last out I actually cried a little but. Then, I called my mom and told her about it. She was weak, but she was very excited to hear about this tremendously rare feat.
I remember this game vividly. Brought my little sister to her first game. In line to get tickets, a father asks if i would like to buy some extra tickets he had because some friends couldn’t make it. For $10 bucks a seat I couldn’t say no. We both knew this was gonna be a good day. Little did we know.. we got to witness some history. Hoping the A’s will stay in Oakland. They were the Bay Areas first dynasty
I'm a Yankees fan and even I get a little teary eyed watching this. IMO it's one of the coolest perfect games in history. I don't care that he used sticky stuff during his career or anything else. It's an incredible feat from a guy like him. And you know, as a Yankees fan I can appreciate a hungover perfecto.
+Dylan Gort Gallaraga's was about a month after Braden (and a couple days after Halladay too, for that matter), so Braden's was still the 19th regardless
It's sad to think that Dallas' final MLB start came less than a year after the perfect game (April 16th, 2011). If only he'd managed to stay healthy...
The A's were really bad that season, but for some reason I decided to turn on the tv to watch. Best decision I ever made. My friend was at this game with his family too.
This is my favorite perfect game of all time. Just something so unexpectedly special about it. and look how tiny that crowd is but how thick the atmosphere is at the end! Only in Oakland
That's why I think no-hitters are more of a pitching feat than perfect games are. Perfect games are just as much of a defensive feat as they are solely a pitching feat.
There was only one amazing play the whole freaking game, if you watch it, 99% of it was basic pop outs and ground outs. Even the play that he went into the dugout was a pop into foul territory so nothing would have probably happened anyway. Your argument holds no validity.
perfect game is like some kind of god-given. Some man never has it even the one had 7 no-hitters, some one had it taken away by bad call. And some nobody can get it someday. Nobody knows. With me a PG is so magical
They are major league pitchers and they were PERFECT that day. Being a good or bad pitcher has little or nothing to do with it. Like someone else said above, something about a perfect game is so magical. For me it's because anyone can be perfect on any day. and it is so rare you only see a handful in a lifetime.. maybe more but it's still a very small amount. Something like 4,500 games played a year in the regular season and most years never see one. So when it happens, it's special. Your comment is irrelevant and misunderstanding what it means and the significance of being perfect on a particular day. Anyone at anytime can do it. Because it has a lot more to do with luck and chance than it does with skill. Although both play important roles. I promise you any pitcher starting in the major leagues is not lacking in skill. Ignorant comments make me chuckle.
Teared up when Braden hugged his grandmother and she was crying. His mom died of cancer his senior year of high school.
My aunt Joan died this mothers day. It was an upsetting time for all of us.
I'm sure his mom is very proud.
+Nate Schwartz aw im so sorry
+Zachary Tedesco erm. not sure if you know...she's not alive anymore.
Lost my mom last October to cancer and going back to this highlight of a perfect game on mother's day made me tear up and think of my mom as well. She truly was special.
It's always so funny to see them discuss the pitcher before the game. A standard practice, and no one has any idea what he's about to accomplish.

*Yup, just another game. Oh boy, just wait and see...*
About his pick off move which he didnt need to use.
MANCHESTER UNITED Who asked?
@MANCHESTER UNITED 1. Who asked? 2. It most certainly is not the most important sport. It's actually garbage.
Kouzmanoff,
You the real MVP.
Saiam Seifi braden owes him for that first play lol
Random fact: Kouzmanoff was the first player to hit a grand slam in his first career at-bat on the first pitch.
The first play and that slow dribbler too
Saiam I
That’s what I was thinking he made some good defensive plays
This has to be one of the best moments in MLB history. The fact that he did it on Mother’s Day and his grandmother was there at the end to hug him is priceless.
wow. this was a great team defense game. it wasnt just Braden. it took everybody. perfect game with only 6 K's.
yea true
D Mac I understand I'm late, but Armondo Galleraga(the guy that got his perfect game blown by a bad call) had an unofficial one(because of the blown call) with only 3 strikeouts.
You're describing almost every perfecto
D Mac most complete games don't have tons of strikeouts. Why? Because strikeouts require more pitches than a pop up or a fly out.
MANCHESTER UNITED omg stop spamming this everywhere
Perfect on a perfect day. THIS is what pitching is all about. And the defense (especially Kouzmanoff) was outstanding.
Watching these highlights today. Kouzmanoff what a performance in the field!
Ya, 3th bsae man is the best player of the day.
This guy only pitched in the majors for 4 years, has a win-loss record below .500, and an era over 4.0, and yet he accomplished something that many of the very best haven't. That's wild to me.

that's actually kinda what makes it cool. I'm an A's fan who grew up in Stockton, seeing something in like this is incredible
Coolquip43 209!
No-hitter in front of his grandma who helped raise him for his hometown team on Mother's Day? Doesn't get better than that.
It actually does, throwing a perfect game
Lmao
It a perfect game and Oakland was not his hometown it was Stockton and why his grandma is so emotional is because his mother passed away when he was in high school
the craziest part is he was apparently hungover and barely even made it to the stadium in time for the game lmao

Foul ball lmao

credit to some fantastic defense especially by Kouzamanoff. love Dallas, happy anniversary to this man!
I had to go back to this 🥹
Same here.
I love how he shows no emotion until the last out is made. Really shows the amount of focus he had in the game.

The foul territory was the real MVP
Still tho it’s a perfect game
It works both ways
Makes you appreciate how good a. 300 hitter is in Oakland
In the 55 year history of the Oakland Coliseum, there have been only two perfect games: Catfish Hunter and Dallas Braden.
look how close this is to being over in the second pitch, just an incredible game
The energy in the colosseum that day was electric. I swear we cracked the foundation when everyone jumped up in celebration.
I'm very touched to see him sharing the moment with his grandma, a lot of people don't realize what that means to family members. I don't have kids or grandkids but I understand how special that moment was for her.

A perfect game is a TEAM accomplishment, on display here more than ever.
One of my favorite moments for the Oakland A's. If you didnt tear up when Braden hugged his grandma you're not right.
Great moment in Athletics history and most likely Braden's best moment ever especially considering it happened on Mother's Day.

I'm a little late but here
The A's were really bad that season, but for some reason I decided to turn on the tv to watch. Best decision I ever made. My friend was at this game with his family too.

There were only about 1,500 people at Tom Browning's perfect game. The game was delayed by rain though.

It’s one of those things few get to experience. The prestige is among the greatest. It’s hard to miss and impossible to replicate.
6:44 did Dallas Braden just punch the shit out of his catcher? LOL
He did, the imp.🤣😂
legend has it he was completely drunk and hungover the day before
The commentator giggles a little when he says 69 mph
It's because of how slow the pitch was
Jack McGrath it's because you don't usually throw a pitch that slow.
His pitches are awesome!!
Win - Braden.
Save - Kouzmanoff.
This is my favorite perfect game of all time. Just something so unexpectedly special about it. and look how tiny that crowd is but how thick the atmosphere is at the end! Only in Oakland
Without Kouzmanoff this game would’ve been spoiled
he went to my old high school, i chatted with him during a football game a few years back he seems really legit
Honestly you can chalk most of this one up to th A's lockdown defense that day. They were just fantastic for the whole game
That's why I think no-hitters are more of a pitching feat than perfect games are. Perfect games are just as much of a defensive feat as they are solely a pitching feat.
