19:02 one thing about them old JD heads is, the little smiley face you have in each cylinder. It's actually a cute little face 😀 Especially after all that incredibly precise work. Good job!
On your standard steel guides ... throw them in your home freezer over night and they'll drive in easier (with lube as usual). You don't have to use liquid Nitrogen every time to use the old contraction trick. Great content ... subscribed.
As a retired Machinist it's amazing how much time you can put into a set of heads cleaning sandblasting seat and guide work re-cleaning and putting the heads together and the all-important paint job.
I love your 3 angle cutters, and the brilliant machine. When I was an apprentice in 1970s England, we used 3 sets of stones followed by lapping. It was laborious!
So I know this is an engine channel, but it seems like you folks know a ton about cast iron. It would be interesting to see you folks do a compilation video of cast iron repairs that you have done.
I, too, love watching machine shops; I'm so glad I found your channel at the start of Covid. Firstly thanks so much for sharing. Second, you cannot believe how fortunate you are to be working in the family business and in an awesome trade. Thirdly, your shop! Spotless!!!! Perfect. I know a lot of people don't care about the mess but I can't stand it. Taking a few minutes after a project or the end of the day to put things away and clean up makes coming in the next morning that much better. It also shows customers that you care. Not that less tidy people don't care, just not as much ;)! Take care and have a great week!
I can't wait until I have all my parts ready and have enough for you guys to do the work on my engine its going to be incredible to see the work done and see it run afterward
I love watching the work you guys do. Around my area machine shops are closing down because the next generation doesn't want to take over or the works not there. Keep posting please. Really enjoyed the 455 build
Good video. I'm not 100% sure but those heads look a lot like some older IH truck engine heads. I worked at a IH truck dealership in the 80's and spent a few years in the machine shop there. Maybe John Deere copied the engines or built them under license
You guys are a great team and seem to really enjoy working together. Had I known that machine shop work like yours was this satisfying I would have gone to school for it. I'd love doing this kind of work. Plus, you have the right tools for the jobs.
Love this length of video versus a minute or two of shorts, you get to see more of the the full process. Like others here, I find this type of work soothing also. It must be something engineering type people can relate too. Keep them going. Can do with a video update on the new build please.
Hey Yall , enjoy watching 👀 the machine work going on . Fun to watch you and your Dad and learn things as we go . Great work and I love the attention to detail that goes into your work . Take care and God Bless .
Would grinding the valves after cutting seats and checking the valve height cause a bit more recession? If so is there a reason why grinding after vs before cutting seats ?
Love the channel! great tagging along with you as your working :) appreciate the time you take to put this together for us 👍. Take care folks! Cheers 🍻
@@MrHuntertaylor I’m a mechanic, particularly the decking of a head/block intake/exhaust on the heads is my favourite. Love your videos, keep them coming as they are the best👍😎
Hey Nicolaus, I really like your RUclips content. As a 3rd generation working at their family automotive machine shop, I get to learn a lot from your informative videos. Just had a question - At @16:22, what is your valve grinding machine setup? Also what kind of coolant are you using while grinding them valves? Thank you.
Absolutely loving this content from the other side of the world 🇦🇺. Does the Serdi position 'float' when cutting seats or are you winding the X and y handles to the exact spot to start cutting? I understand it's using the guide to cut but how does it get centred in the first place. Hope this makes sense 😂
What would a Yanmar 3GM30F cylinder head rebuild ballpark cost be? It’s a marine Diesel engine. I can’t get any machine shop in Seattle to even answer the phone.
I am building a car And I've already done engine work on it one But I would love to send my heads to you and have them rebuilt and receded and Have them built so they can handle horsepower I absolutely love watching what you'll doAnd maybe yo can make a video out of my heads.
Hey ,quick question for you , when cutting the seats and all the small metal fragments go shooting around the head ,how do you ensure no metal gets into coolant and the internal passages of the head ?
I think you are asking the wrong shop. These guy refurbish engines. They aren't focused on building engines for power. Check out the channel called Power Nation. They build a ton of stuff for power. They might already have a video on your 4.9L ford.
i just got to ask you Can one install valve seals on a enguine that doenst originally have them? i got an 1968 IHC434 with the DD148 4 cylinder 2.5 liter Diesel engine with abaut 6000 original hours on it - I dont care for more Horsepower but the exhaust sut is sticky and builds up because engine oil is slowly leaking down the valve guides in small quantities - gets burned from the intake side and gets spit out on the exhaust side - abaut a coffee mug per 40 hours of run time i payed 1100$ for the entire tractor so a engine rebuild kit for 1800 really is not reallysomething im willing to make, I use it less than 80hours a year - can one install valve seals after the fact on a engine that originally doesnt have any- im especially worried that the valves will not get adequate lubrication - for now I will switch from 10W40 to 15W40 oil to reduce guide leakage can one install valve guide seals on a engine that doesnt have any?

Great explanations and narration. Ha! I see you must live on the plains close to KS with that kind of wind.👍
Would grinding the valves after cutting seats and checking the valve height cause a bit more recession?
If so is there a reason why grinding after vs before cutting seats ?
Technically yes, but grinding to touch up takes less than .001” typically.
Love the channel! great tagging along with you as your working :) appreciate the time you take to put this together for us 👍. Take care folks! Cheers 🍻
Nic, have you thought about merch sales? T-shirt's/hats/hoodies etc? Didn't notice any on the website.
Y'all have any luck with chilling the valve guides to give a little clearance when installing? How much interference for do you have?
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching! :)
You do beautiful work. You seem to take a lot of pride in your work. People don't get that everywhere.
Nice!
Back to factory specs. May be better depending on seat material !
Top notch work your dad and you worked so hard and you deserve it
Thank you for your video
Excellent

Such beautiful work
Really dig that clever lifting tool you made with the different threads on them, great idea!

Triple air float, then locks down when cutting from my understanding.

Nice engineering. Love it.
why dont u use your hydraulic press to press the valve guide ?
do you do work on small engines. like snow blowers or lawn tractors.
Nice Nicholas!

Been the same way here in Kansas wind from hell for almost a week.

That is what the final wash, rinse, and blowout are for!
We throughly rinse and blow out every passage before assembly.
Another great video Nick! And your dad is a case! Lol
Love the videos one question how much power do you think you could make with a built 4.9 l Ford

You're right, that's why I invested into assets like cryptocurrency and some stocks

What's one of those drill bits cost that you your take the valve guides out?
I believe they’re a little over $200
Sweet video

Love the video
I don't know the first thing about machining but I'm curious how long the sort of job would take?
Without interruptions both of these jobs could be done in a days work. Unfortunately, interruptions happen lol.
Good 👌
The later seems viable to me!!!!
Do only work on domestic?

whats the part number of the mitutoyo valve guide bore gauge?

You can get it here, if you decide to order tell them I sent you :)
notification squad, Have a nice weekend!🔥🔥🔥
You as well! Thanks for watching!
How much a build like this cost?
Depends, but usually easily in the range of $1k
Why not invite Junkyard Digs out to revive that pickup outside your shop?
I don't like the Serdi seat machines I like using Berco machine personally.
Why couldn't you drive the old guides out, instead of drilling them out?
👍
