Lyrics, far as I can tell, done by ear
    ___
    Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
    Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Last Saturday night I got married,
Me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife are parted,
I'm gonna take me a stroll uptown
    Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
    Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Sometimes I live in the country
    Sometimes I live in town
    Sometimes I get a notion
To jump into the river and drown
    Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
    Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
    Stop rambling and stop gambling
Quit staying out late at night
Go home to your wife and your family
And sit down by the fireside bright
    Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
    Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
    Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
    Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene

Like this tune is a favorite pastime to them that the Columbians all know by heart. Hence it being "practiced." Have you played Singularity? It's not exactly Bioshock, but it takes enough cues from it that I consider it an honourary entry into the series. It even has a city, a lighthouse, and a man who shows up to ruin the city.

I find myself wanting to feel bittersweet about this song, like sad that Colombia is thrown into chaos after this moment. But then I keep remembering that they're singing as the warm up to a public stoning. I seriously think Irrational should have given the white residence of Colombia SOME redeeming qualities so you can actually feel bad for them when they're killed off.

    • @fyrespark2077
      @fyrespark2077 2 года назад +5

The redeeming qualities are their religiousness, their kids, the peaceful life element, the fact they're victims of a man manipulating them into having a cult of personality.

I absolutely love the way this track builds the atmosphere up so much before the raffle pulls the rug out from under you. You can tell in little moments and bits of dialogue that folks aint right in Columbia but until the raffle its pretty happy and lighthearted. Personally I tried to see as much of the city as I could so the bits and bobs of prejudice were there but my stomach still dropped a bit when the curtains parted. The fact that the prize for the raffle is only the “first throw” scared me a little. It wouldn’t just be the winner who hurt them. It was every single person in the audience. It’s chilling, and it made me think not only about who the people of Columbia are, but how Columbia was built. The city wasn’t established overnight, and Booker isn’t just getting there at the opening of it. There were ten other raffles before he came and tore it down. How many people’s blood were spilt so that the city could live? It isn’t a perfect game, but fuck, do I ever love Bioshock Infinite.

This Song is big part in american History.began with leadbelly (black blues singer) who seemingly learned the song from his uncles in around 1900.
allegedly there was a written script before but got lost.Later you have the weavers, johnny cash, eric clapton, tom waits and lot more who made covers.besides that its really good work how the song was used in bioshock.fink probably, brought the song to columbia, made it a white-church song.and the timing fits the feeling that this peacy place isnt what it seems,so this song ended the calm sunny feeling and the game starts to show slowly what the truth is.goodnighet irene - good boy my lovely wife, goodybe cloumbia fake world.

Johnny Cash sings this song. I was listening to an old record by him and was surprised I recognized it from Bioshock Infinite. The record I have is supposed to be a gospel album, even though this version of the song doesn't seem like one. But it is interesting considering the religious overtones of Bioshock Infinite. (Edit: Turns out when looking a bit further that this song was an extremely religious song first. It was called "If It Had Not Been For Jesus", a Christian gospel sung to the same tune, first recorded in 1930 by Blind Willie Johnson.)
