  • Zen 6 To CHANGE EVERYTHING... Again! CCD Info & Specs LEAK
According to the most recent leaks on AMD Zen 6 (codename MEDUSA), we can expect the Ryzen Zen 6 CPUs to have DOUBLED the core count. We also have some leaks on the packaging and CCDs for Zen 6, so join us as we examine the latest leaks on Zen 6 Medusa processors, which not only includes the latest rumours on the CCDs and cores part of the hardware specs, but also touches on some of the info we've heard already about these next gen Ryzen CPUs. But will Zen 6 REALLY have double the cores? And just how will Intel answer this, if it's true?
We also have some interesting leaks on LPDDR6, complete with slides.

Zen 6 X3D would have 16 cores on both CCD's.
Zen 6 will also feature a 32 core CPU it will be Zen 6c.
Zen 5c and Zen 6c is basically the (e cores) version of AMD.
Zen 5 X3D is unsure if it has X3D on both CCD's.
But Zen 6 X3D is for sure on both CCD and I expect
Zen 6 to have double the cache amount vs Zen 5 X3D.
Meaning Zen 5 could have a little more cache spit to two CCD's.
But there is also a rumor/leaks that suggest Zen 6 to have 3 CCD's meaning Zen 4 will have X3D on one CCD, Zen 5 on two CCD's and Zen 6 also on two CCD's with the 3rd CCD being the CCD0 (which is the main CCD).
But if main CCD0 and CCD1 will have X3D then CCD2 will be Zen 6c (as the 3rd CCD) which is for AI focused and other background tasks and when they implement X3D into the Zen 5 or 6c it will have more performance in frames and apps like DLSS/FSR/Raytraycing. If Zen 6 X3D comes out it will most likely use Zen 5c cores and this will be something like 16 cores Zen 6 + 4 cores Zen 5c or somewhere like 20-24 cores up to 32+ cores AMD's physical core count is a maximum of 8 cores per CCX and 16 cores per CCD if I'm correct Zen 4 was 8 cores per CCD, Zen 5 will be 16 cores per CCD and Zen 6 will be 32 cores per CCD the last one might be Zen 6c only and this CPU will be like a 16 cores on steroids for multitasking and programming and other heavy duty tasks like video editing.

Sounds about right.. AMD talked about a 256C EPYC years back... I was wondering if they would increase to 32C for Zen5C or just stick with 128C with higher IPC and clocks... It looks like the Genoa successor will get 16C at 4nm... They can differentiate by keeping the 32MB L3 where 5C would stay at 16MB with the same shrink...
But I do see Genoa's successor doubling to 192C... That could easily see MI400A have 48C with any advances from CDNA4 (I think up to 400CUs)...
Anyway, they just have such flexibility with chiplets and cIODs it's fun to speculate... A lot will also be about maintaining the layouts which is currently 12CCDs for Cloud HPC chips and 8CCDs for Cloud Web servers... They could move to a 12CCD layout for Turin Dense which would also move to 192C... No one is even close to that so they can wait for Zen6 and perhaps 2nm to move to the 32C CCD...
That will require a cache redesign though I still believe L3 can be removed from the die using VCache stacks... That would make for an even more flexible chiplet design base letting them cram more logic into the dies and design stacks with L3 and\or HBM...

AMD will need a 16 core CCD for the X3D variants. 8ncores are fine for current games, but Zen6 will be a CPU sold during 2026-2028 that needs to handle games released in 2023 or longer.
Also I am pretty sure AMD will bring a 32 core variant if Intel comes with ARL refresh 8+32 (E cores are expected to be much stronger than now).
Also Zen4 cores are currently very small. More than half if the CCD is used for L3 (that does not scale with N3 at all) and stuff like infinity links. If AMD brings a 16 core CCD this does not make it twice as big.
Temps can be an issue if all 16 cores are under full load, but AMD could simply reduce boost clocks under all core workloads.

One thing odd about the zen lineups. They have the i/o die and various configurations of ccd's. Either two on one side, or four on each side or 6 on each side. Where is two on each side? Do the two each side a hedt, two on each side as workstations, and six on each side for server. Hedt should be more pcie than regular desktop and workstation more and server many more. say 32,64,128,256? optimistically, or 28,36 64,128 more realistically, or 28,32,64,128.

So, first obvious implication, Zen 5 is going to be announced at Computex, but we're not going to GET it before the end of August '24.
Or do you mean they're going to release it but only give us detailed information about it (like architectural improvements and changes) once it has been in the shops for 2 or 3 months? I vaguely recall AMD has done stuff like that in the past ~

I wouldn’t read anything into AMD’s presence at Hot Chips. They, like all the other semiconductor companies, go every year, and AMD has historically not aligned their product release cadence with the Hot Chips conference. We will undoubtedly get a lot more details on the architecture (including white papers that are pretty much only useful for people working in the industry) because that’s what this conference is all about, but there’s also a good chance they’ll be discussing RDNA 4 and their next AI chips based around CDNA. And that’s to say nothing of Xilinx, future Xbox/Playstation chips, and R&D efforts that will come to market post-Zen5.
In short, don’t read anything into it quite yet.

_except for like small % of professional users_
Very few, so buy the cheapest ARM and firee up Office Online and webmail. Or the lowest 2 core. Oh wait lowest is 4 these days. It will do fine.
_Majority of software can't even properly utilize 16 cores_
Define majority. By power use%? By lines of code? By number of programs used? Or sold? Many many free downloads of great software. Or by how many they really load up? By total running hours?
The smaller helper programs that load 1 or 2 cores like CChelper, BorgBackup, 4K Downloader, are all programs used by people that also load up Photoshop, Da Vinci, that also may or may not load up 16 cores (often not).
Even then, kernels for large programs like SolidWorks, SolidEdge, certain GIS packages cannot use 2 cores fully, almost every component depends on the previous. For brute forcing many paths for CAM or a good render it can load as many cores as you can throw at it, gpu's too.
_games have problem with 8 cores_
Some do, some do not. A lot is multiplatform, all consoles have 8 cores, so games use 8 cores. If you then have some stuff in the background (most have more than they think) that loads those 8 cores too so 10-12 is ideal to me. My tray: Skype, Discord, Nvidia, Outlook, Qbittorrent, Avid Link, Seagate Toolkit, App Center, Phone Link, G Hub, Roccat Swarm, Everything, GOG, Epic, Steam, EA Play, Mega, Avast, MalwareBytes, Teams, OneDrive. And I am not even that exceptional, many have way way more there. All running in the background.
_lot of them still hammers only 1-2 cores_
Of course the do, for the main loop, but this also is a function of middleware (Unreal Engine, CryEngine, Source, Unity, Godot, FMOD, Wwise) doing this. Even then, I sometimes run Pro Tools, Handbrake, DaVinci, SolidEdge, and aside from the odd game I play (mostly Eve anyway) having good cpu on tap is a good thing for my measly desktop.

There’s a reason why mainstream consumer CPU’s haven’t gone past 16 cores, and the ‘best’ gaming CPU’s are still just 8 cores with a lot of cache.
