You will notice that the older the wood used in the house, the slower the growth of the tree that the wood is made from. A 2x4 with a longer growth cycle is stronger than one grown in a short growth cycle. Essentially, all the lumber we buy today is short growth lumber. They plant trees with a fast growth cycle, so they have less investment involved before making money. Older wood tends to be more dense, so heavier. Getting nails out can be a pain. However, there is also a different patina to the older wood. Those old grains have had time to age and deeper in color. There are a lot of folks who assume old wood is just trash, but when cleaned up, it's quality surpasses modern wood. I encourage you to salvage every piece you can & reuse it. I've been using salvaged wood in furniture restoration & upcycling for over 40 years. There is a big difference in old & new wood over the last 25 years; huge difference if you go 50 or more years.
Thanks again for another film with footage showing the changes. The piggery clearance has allowed you to create a vision for its use and that clearance…….well who doesn’t like a good sort out? The relly’s are funny but getting stuck in brings out the lengthy humour built up over a number of years. It’s really warming to see it. Upstairs clear and the vaulted look is amazing! Keep at it all, it’s already taking some shape. Best of luck, Wayne
The pigery doesn't look like the same building, it's quite charming. As for your family, labour and entertainment, what more can you ask for. Really looked like loads of work, but just as much fun with them there. Great video.❤
I continue to be impressed by your willingness to get stuck in, you have been a very able assistant to Gav. His power & your support make you a godd team. I guess you get it from your Aunt & Uncle. they are truly amazing. You seem to be quite skilled in the art of using a shovel now, and, there is an art.
One little trick with the wheelbarrow - leave it pointing in the direction it is going to empty it. This saves having to do a 8 point turn with a full load. Pig enclosures were usually cobbled or slate floor to stop the pigs rooting the floor up, so get a power washer to blast one corner and see what you have got. I hope there was no damage with Storm Darragh, I had trees down. The trampoline probably blew in at some point as they like flying. Have a couple of days off this Christmas - everything can wait, and you have enough wood to keep warm!
I really enjoyed ep. 11. As a senior in age seeing the athletic ability of your parents and aunt and uncle was a joy to watch. Could my old bones and muscles bend over and pull up stones, grass, and garbage with such youthful ability? I don't think so. I would be aching for days. Nicole from the time you first started breaking down the walls of your future house I can see the strength you have developed. Not only can you write reports you have developed the muscle to snap lath, pull timber with big nails in them, and shovel with determination.
I loved Aunt Jean's "wee shoogle". Not a term I am familiar with, but I know the sentiment exactly. I am too old to have treasured Aunt and Uncles like them still living, but golly, I miss them.....
I am really glad your Uncle found a horseshoe! It’s a wee shoe for a wee bit o’luck! It’s not clear how long you 3 worked on the piggery but it has been transformed. Well done to all!
That wooden structure looks like a bench vise, if I'm seeing correctly and there's a part that turns on one side.🤔 It's really amazing how much you have done this week and the transformation upstairs and in the pole barn is massive. Great seeing family pitch in and help so enthusiastically.❤️
The upstairs is massive, looks great. Your aunt and uncle helped so much, they seem very sweet. I love how the black angel is always watching and sniffing around curiously. You all cleaned up that piggery and barn so well.
😳 Lucky Gav is a in the Building game, blimey that is really gutting a house !!!! At least you have now got loads of firewood 😳 Your enthusiasm Reminds me of my youth
Stripping the ceilings upstairs gives you the illusion of so much more space. Great decision! You have the epitome of a blank canvas now - it'll free you up now end. I also like the way you're making progress on the out-buildings. It's so satisfying putting in the hard work (until you start to spend actual money on the place 😭). Really enjoying your content!
We are really enjoying this journey. I'm sure Gavin knows but modern timber isn't a patch on the ones coming out of the ceiling. Once denailed they have character. A vaulted ceiling is definitely the best decision.
Looking great..the before and after shots are brilliant. The older generation seem to have more energy than our generation....probably less time stuck in front of computers!! 😂
It is great when the demolition phase is over, remember to keep the old copper wire and pipes it worth scrap value, we kept ours until the end and used it to buy champagne.
I know it isn't Welsh, nor particularly used anywhere in the UK, but you might consider a ceiling fan, maybe in wood, to help circulate the warm air in winter and cool in the summer. Since heat rises, the only comfortable place in the house in winter is 6-8 inches below the ceiling! Lol! Not terribly convenient. The pole barn would certainly make a great place for wood storage and a workshop. You've already got a saw horse with a homemade jig (I think that's what it's called.) Ohhh! replacement slates for the roof! That's handy! As to the bones, they undoubtedly slaughtered their own pigs. Nice job on the out buildings. You get an immediate sense of a successful day's work. Great video!
Our home has very high vaulted ceilings and our climate can get quite cold but we’ve found ceiling fans make a massive difference in heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. We run them all year-you just have to reverse them obviously 😬. Just a thought for the design phase down the road. Best of luck!
You are the second person to say this today and I've never even considered it before but it's such a good idea! Don't think I've ever seen a ceiling fan in the UK!
Another great video and yah for Aunty and Uncle, very hard workers. The piggery looks great. Was Gav impressed when he saw how much you guys had achieved while he was away?

Totally agree, we will definitely be using the wood in projects in the new year!

I loved how he just kept filming her as she struggled thru the window, heaven forbid he help her 😂😂
It had me in stitches!😂
@citytosmallholding I was waiting for Benny Hill to show up.
Oh my word, what an amazing couple! Thoroughly enjoyed this video. There’s life in us old pensioners yet!
Wow! So impressed with your Aunt and Uncle. They had so much stamina. 😊
They really do!

The resilient and resourceful Scots are made of stern stuff. What fantastic parents💪👏👌♥️
Absolutely!
Family is priceless. Especially your aunt and uncle

We lost part of a barn unfortunately and quite a lot of trees 😫
Your Aunty and Uncle are amazing 👍
They are indeed!

Ah thanks! There has definitely been our fair share of sore muscles during the journey but definitely starting to feel stronger!
I loved Aunt Jean's "wee shoogle". Not a term I am familiar with, but I know the sentiment exactly. I am too old to have treasured Aunt and Uncles like them still living, but golly, I miss them.....
Fantastic😂
I am really glad your Uncle found a horseshoe! It’s a wee shoe for a wee bit o’luck!
It’s not clear how long you 3 worked on the piggery but it has been transformed. Well done to all!
Here's hoping!
That was very productive and so much fun to watch. Invite your family back soon ❤🇨🇦
Well your Aunt and Uncle sure pt heir backs into it , god bless them.
They did indeed!

I will take a look at bench vices and see if one matches! Thanks!
My goodness that clean-out effort was a job and a half. Well done!
Thank you!
Very enjoyable I am 37 and always wanted to learn to dance like that 😊
Ah yeah they're brilliant!
Grey power yay 👍
Cleaning out the barn and pig sty was a HUGE undertaking. Congratulations to all on a job WELL DONE!
Yes! Thank you!
Grey Army!!! 👍
The upstairs is massive, looks great. Your aunt and uncle helped so much, they seem very sweet. I love how the black angel is always watching and sniffing around curiously. You all cleaned up that piggery and barn so well.
Ah yes, Seren is always keeping an eye on us!
I agree it would be a great chicken coop
The upstairs already looks grand. All that exposed brickwork and beams. Love it!
Its so exciting seeing it all cleared!
Some more great work from you all, well done.
Enjoyed your video, loved your aunt and uncle!😊
😳 Lucky Gav is a in the Building game, blimey that is really gutting a house !!!!
At least you have now got loads of firewood 😳
Your enthusiasm Reminds me of my youth
Yeah I don't think we could have done it if he wasn't a tradie.
I never expected to be wowed by the piggery, but wow indeed!
It was worth it right!
Well done on all the clearing. So much to do, yet you are getting through the first stages quite quickly. Thank you for the update
Absolutely!
It doesn't matter which renovation project you watch there's always a bloody trampoline, very strange. Terrific progress, well done. Regards Jim
Right! The farmer who lived here before didn't even have children so even weirder!

Definitely not looking forward to the spending money part!

Thanks very much! Yeah we have kept all the wood that we can and will definitely use it in future projects.
Looking great..the before and after shots are brilliant.
The older generation seem to have more energy than our generation....probably less time stuck in front of computers!! 😂
Totally agree!
Make sure you put a Radon membrane down below the insulation in the downstairs floor..
Oh good shout we forgot that had come up on our survey!
The wool can be used in the garden as weed suppression and slug deterrent.
Great idea!
GREAT job 👏🏻
Thank you!! 😁
Thanks for posting and sharing. Looks like you all got a lot done.
We're getting there!
Do take a look at , The Irish Homestead...... they've made a super archway from a trampoline 🎉
Aaah I will check that out!
I too watch The Irish Homestead it's called a moon gateway. 😊
It is great when the demolition phase is over, remember to keep the old copper wire and pipes it worth scrap value, we kept ours until the end and used it to buy champagne.
Oh absolutely, it's Gav's favourite past time!
I like the buying champagne idea though!

Thanks so much! Yeah so nice when you get such an immediate before and after!
I hope you kept that old trampoline, @The Irish Homestead, (this week) they used theirs to make a lovely moon gate, which I think is a great idea 😍
We will check it out!!
The outbuildings are gorgeous, wish I was helping out on it
We are very lucky!
Love it
Thanks!
Still love that bathroom paper. 😊
Gone but not forgotten! 😂

Your poor Mum! Your dad knows how to use a spade too lol
Oops Auntie and Uncle
They are great!
Poor old yins, doing all that digging 😮
Couldn’t stop them if I tried 😂😂
Another great video and yah for Aunty and Uncle, very hard workers. The piggery looks great. Was Gav impressed when he saw how much you guys had achieved while he was away?
He was really impressed to be fair!
Is it for putting saddles on
Oh maybe!
The piggery and it's left hand "side part", could make a great small dwelling too...
Yeah I think down the line that’s a definite possibility or it may eventually become my office or something.
@citytosmallholding boundless potential 👍
You need a couple of pigs now for the pig sty
Could you please review the sound volume on your videos. Very low levels comparative to all my other RUclips videos I watch.
I struggled with the volume on this particular vlog too 😥
Hmm that’s so strange - I’m using the recommended settings but I will check it out
Doesn't it qualify the difference between the post war 'boomer' generation and today's light weights. Kudos to Auntie & Uncle
is the roof slate? with membrane under? If so you're lucky.. insulation ( not fibre glass) and you're away
Yeah slate, which is great!
💪❤
It's great to see your aunt and uncle putting a shift in. Stay active everyone, it's the path to staying sharp
Absolutely!
What does a Doctor of Destruction do when all is demolished? Tune in next month....
hahaha don't worry I'm sure we will find some more jobs for him!
Your sound levels a bit low😊
@@Bugs1953 hahahah no way! They are all at RUclips specs after the grilling I got on the second video!
Vaulted ceilings, with vlux windows,...🤔🤔🤔🤔
I’m confused, what are you confused at 🤣
watching how hard your family works is wearing me out! oh & it was hard to hear this video.
youll be in by christmas
😂😂
Love this? 😂
Are you not sure 😂😂
It was meant to be an exclamation mark!!! 😂😂
😂😂
Gav needs a demolition side channel… Bam Bam 💥
He doesn't need any more excuses for demolition 😂
@ loving your work, the house will look ace 💪🏻
Is that wooden structure an old saw horse? Plenty of wood to dry and store ready for fires in the house. Crack on peoples
Yeah we have been using that wood all winter, its been brilliant, it's so dry!
