Derelict Farmhouse Renovation: Why You Should NEVER Render Stone Walls with Concrete (ep.14)
In this episode, we uncover the worst damage yet in our DIY farmhouse renovation journey. While stripping back the walls and removing concrete render, we discovered major issues with the wooden joists and lintels in our 120+ year-old stone house. These structural problems are going to set us back significantly and force us to rethink our plans for restoring this abandoned farmhouse in Wales.
Join us as we revisit progress made in November, with help from my Dad and Uncle, and push forward into January despite setbacks. Along the way, we’ll show why using concrete render on stone houses is a huge mistake and share our plans for preserving the character and structure of this old property.

Its a proper home😊😊😊
That little shovel worked almost as hard as ya'll did!!😅Such a nice place!❤
don't think you should refer to design from a different era as "ulgy"
Might i suggest a leaf blower for clearing the rooms of dust ? it will also get loose grit out between the stones ( unless you're sandblasting the stones later )
Digging swales & making berms with the soil is vital to water control & erosion reduction.
Just found your channel. Catching up 😊 there not a more loyal creature than a rescue dog (know from experience ❤). She’s a good girl. I see the staffy personality x
Lovely video, "music" = 🤮🔫
Just found you guys. Lovin it
I love nothing better than a cinderella story .. and this princess is going to be gorgeous!! New subscriber here!!
Wow, this must be a sign from above, I’m in the USA and I LOVE renovating RUclips videos, your home is just stunning, I can see what it could be. My motto in my creative life is “It’s not what it is but what it could be “.
Dear Nicole and Gav, I found your channel today. What a wonderful property. You've achieved so much in such a short time - congratulations on your hard work. Our renovation is tiny compared to yours so I have some feeling about how much effort you've put in. We're in Wiltshire so if you are stuck and need a hand just get in touch and we'll come and help you for a day or two. Best wishes for the future! Rich
Such a cool project. I love old farms being brought back to life! Will you be doing any more information on the old mill? Maybe share an old map of when the mill was working? Watching from Pembrokeshire!
I am so pleased to have found your wonderful channel. I enjoyed your video and will continue to watch. Your hard work will be such a joy to you both. 😊
Feed trough guaranteed, we had them on the farm that I grew up on
Tbay was very satisfying seeing that stone work finally able to breathe aftr soooo long, well done folks, rooting for you both! 🙌🧡
Please please don't ruin that old stove and it's mantle !!! Never be seen again.
Hi Found this episode on the state of the walls and supporting timbers intriguing and worrying. Hope you guys are ok and find an easy solution to that one. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hi, Just caught up with recent videos including the ‘dude, dog and digger’ episode which was great. Really enjoyed seeing how much of that track you managed to clear. Well done!!
Must be hard work but will look fab
Legendary effort. God bless
The dream ! Just found your channel , will devour it all when I get back from doing the horses ! I’d love this one day ❤
Love the puppy. Thank you for saving this beautiful building that I'm sure will turn in to a fabulous home.
So, I'm late to the party! Somehow the fabled algorithm has done its deed and found your channel for me. Two video's in and I'm hooked. It's a gutsy project and I'm so full of admiration for what you're doing.
Love these two, always grafting away!!
Oh, what a disappointment! I'm sorry your going to have to go through all this extra work but that is what buying a house to remodel it is all about, isn't it? And it always ends up being more work than you thought. A shield of protection around you as you continue your work.
Give yourselves some time off, it’s part of the the project planning 😊
The scourge of cement render.. This material must’ve done untold damage to our old buildings over the years. Peter Ward’s damp rot y.tube videos are interesting - if you’ve not seen them? Really enjoying watching you both (and the dog!) take on this heroic endeavour! 🥤🛋️🍿📺
Reminded me of the time when I was younger moving into a derelict old vicarage in Wales that my parents had bought and doing pretty much everything you guys are currently doing inside the farmhouse, hard work but very rewarding. Best of luck to you both.
Oh well done! what a fantastic achievement... You's worked so hard and it showed... looking forward to the rest..I do hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New'Years and and well deserved break..you have wonderful family and beautiful neighbours...
Super enjoyed this snapshot of your life! Absolutely want to see your progress moving forward! You have a huge hydropower electricity opportunity there with all that fast flowing water! Potential for some serious kilowatts! Very exciting! Well done to both of you! +1 subscriber 😊
Gav, you give me a good laugh 😂
REDNECK WATERPARK
You guys could use a Stihl Trimmer with accessories re Hedge trimmer! That would make quick work of a lot of those brambles. Another item that might make a lot of sense to rent is a Mulcher to take all of the material and break it down into mulch.
In the old days they used to bury cats into the walls for good luck..
So nice of the company to send you a dog toy. Love the wallpaper
You have worked keep going all the best to you regards jan ,
Good hard work
Hope that you kept that beautiful hutch, and the China that was in it! A beautiful piece of furniture!
Absolutely!!
Did you have tests done for asbestos in that plaster etc
Buy a tractor then you can dyke the river at the source 😢😢😢😢
I think you went too far pulling down the ceiling and walls. Why didn't you put any debris catcher on the floor? With winter coming it is a bad time to take out all the insulation.
We don't live in the house so it makes no difference when we took out the insulation and if you watch our latest video you will see exactly whey we had to strip out all of the ceilings and walls - the joists were completely rotten and we would never have known if we hadn't done that and the 1st floor would have eventually collapsed.
That classic1970s fireplace is a classic 1930s one 😏
Well, such damage to wooden parts is to be expected if moisture is trapped in the wall by using the wrong materials such as cement plaster. Typical damage for incorrectly renovated half-timbered houses. The only thing to do is to replace everything and not make the same mistake.
The horse manure is aged enough for compost. The dog has a channel “pup tent to posh for rent” and defers to his solicitor for any future cameos on this channel.
😂😂
Well done with the clear up. Not easy.
Liked and subscribed so the algorithm can start doing its thing! Good luck.
Thanks!
As always, renovation is something of a voyage of discovery. Along the journey you are surprised, annoyed, tired and exhilarated and sometimes all in the same moment. The main thing is you and Gav are approaching it correctly. Stopping, pausing, checking, re-thinking and making decisions. No two ways about it, those rotten joists do need to be inspected and probably removed. It’s a heck of a job but not insurmountable. The main thing is that despite the hard work, once it’s done, you’ll have peace of mind for the rest of your lives. That peace is definitely worth grafting for. Keep going, thanks again for sharing and suck up all those positive messages and turn them into action. Best of luck, Wayne
Thanks Wayne!
Where’s the after part😬
Lime is a must on a solid wall as lime will breathe, concrete seals the wall structure and retains dampness in the structure. The concrete was possibly added in the post war years.
Just when i think the video cant get any better a Black Lab turns up! :) ❤
