Couple of suggestion for the future since we're probably watching the past. Once you pull up the floor covering & discover lovely floors, put the covering back down when possible & use it to protect the floors while you're deconstructing and redoing the room. Then, take out the flooring cover. Not sure of the age of the wood you breaking apart...but if it is old wood original to house, or close to, the wood was generally taken from old growth forest. The wood we get today is fast growth wood. You can compare the end grain and weight of old growth & new growth & see the divference. Old growth wood is so much stronger for this reason. So if it's reusable, pry out or cut as needed and save it rather than breaking it up. You will need to treat the whole house for bugs since you've already found wood worms, so the existence of an infestation doesn't make it unusable. You can also use wood hardener when needed & seal it off with shellac if you are concerned about residual odor. Spraying hlaf water/half vinegar will also help address odors. Worth noting, most of the garbage in landfills is construction waste, so it's always good to use it if you can.
Now thinking back keeping the lino on the floor would have been much more sensible! The wood is really great as you say, we are definitely trying to keep as much as possible and re-use where we can. The last owner had a lot of cement render put on the walls so there is quite a bit of damp and rot in the wood so some couldn't be saved but we love a bit of reclamation so definitely going to be putting the doors back and using the other wood where we can!
Definitely save the old wood ,as has been said already ,tends to be much better quality. I used some old floorboards for my trailer floor which has outlasted the exterior marine ply I previously used and then some . . Added to that the old wood will be all in Imperial measurements rather than metric and easier to reuse around the house where replacement bits are needed ,not forgetting to be aware of lead in the old paint which I'm sure you are already aware of ! Good luck !
Have you thought about keeping a record of all that wallpaper? A collage of each piece could be interesting as a record. I didn't realize you could have so many different patterns in one home! Keep up the good work.

Wow that’s quite the selection of wall papers. So glad that Lino came up so easy to reveal lovely hardwood planks. Hope they are in good condition to keep
I might be a bit old fashioned, but hoping you kept a lot of the structural lumber from the cubby in the bathroom, it looked in good nick and can be used around the farm. If the old furniture had woodworm it could be saved and restored, some of those old pieces are still beautiful.

Brilliant, those floors are in really good condition and you can really see the potential after you stripped back the house to bare bones. Are you going for air source / ground source heating or a gas heating system? Those original windows are beautiful, and it would be lovely to see them restored but not sure how energy efficient they will be. Those fireplaces are gorgeous as well
Yeah we are going to go airsource we think. Groundsource is just too expensive. I feel exactly the same about the windows but on doing some research it is very hard and VERY expensive to change a single paned window to a double one but we will keep the windows for sure and use them else where
@@citytosmallholding Sounds like a good plan. If air source heating then absolutely get as much insulation put in as possible and underfloor heating. It's a real shame about the windows but from a cost point of view, they are incredibly expensive to restore and have the glazing replaced. Another source of heating might be that beautiful inglenook fireplace in the kitchen and some stoves installed in those beautiful fireplaces. Hopefully your chimneys and roof are in really good condition and the chimneys will need sweeping and cleaning to bring them back into use.
@citytosmallholding I've got air source heat pump,it works very well& I live in rural Scotland! Grou d source was too expensive for me! I do feel quite sad seeing everything getting ripped out, i didn't realise it was going to be so drastic, and kind of assumed you'd preserve the original layout. Obs without the newer features like the boiler cupboard and loo kitchen. Top tip, I expect you'll get mice moving in during winter and they eat weird stuff like rubber, foam rollers, that kind of thing. You need metal containers for anything edible, which is almost anything 😂
Dont be sad! We are keeping the original layout but none of the building had insulation, it needs to be fully replummed and rewired and the walls were full of rot and damp because of the dodgy concrete patches that were used on the stone work - so we are stripping it back to re-point it all in lime and ensure the building can breathe. Our intention is to make this house last for hundreds of years after we are gone but for it also to be eco friendly/energy efficient. The doors will be going back in and we will be keeping the floors throughout. The skirting that doesn't have rot will be used as we move forward - don't worry we wont be making it into a boring beige box 😂. Very good shout on the mice! Although tbh we haven't found a single dropping in the house but with all the work going on I think they may take an interest this year!
@@citytosmallholding oh phew I'm so glad about that as the house has a lovely feel and so many renovations remove all the character. So happy you're using lime. You probably know this but there's a lime supplier near Brecon called Ty Mawr, also Celtic Sustainables in Cardigan will be full of great stuff for this project.
So interesting to see how good materials were used in original floors…and how sad to see how gradually inhabitants lives declined…re the bath…40 years is nothing…our current bath is over 60 😀
Hi, Please tell me that you did not discard all the skirting boards, you may find they will be difficult to replace. If there is enough room, you may want to consider widening the stairs.
You know what, it actually is. The roof for the house and a couple of the barns were replaced in 2011, so in the scheme of things, its pretty new which was a big reason we bought the place.
i dont't know... maybe a bit rash getting rid of the toilet/kitchen would save many steps if you whipped up a truly potent batch of curry..... jus sayin! wow the bones of this house i am truly envious that you get to do this, if only i had this chance when i was your age. i am so enjoying this journey.
Please please please wear a paper face/dust mask at a bare minimum , A fpp3 type mask would be ideal , who knows what your breathing in 😮. Loving the progress you both work very hard 💪🏻

You're all doing amazing
Thanks so much!
Great floor!
Thanks!
Love the cottage doors, hope youare going to reuse them!!!
Absolutely!
Wallpaper in every nook and cranny
Lovely wooden floor
We are very lucky!
@@citytosmallholding Totally
Going well ,have you kept a sink in the house for water and cleaning tools etc ? Looking great though soon be a totally blank canvas
We had to turn off all the water in the house unfortunately but we have an outside hose, so we are all good for cleaning
So interesting to see how good materials were used in original floors…and how sad to see how gradually inhabitants lives declined…re the bath…40 years is nothing…our current bath is over 60 😀
Oh wow haha!
I love the tiled floor in the hallway and the kitchen. Will you keep it?
100% we love the tiles
How lucky you are, that they didn't glue the linoleum on to the floor boards!!!
Right!!!
Hi,
Please tell me that you did not discard all the skirting boards, you may find they will be difficult to replace.
If there is enough room, you may want to consider widening the stairs.
We saved everything we could!
Wonderful floorboards in the first room! Why does the corner window not have any light coming in?
It's boarded up because there is a broken pane of glass
Have you kept all the original skirting boards
Yep. A lot had bad rot but we saved what we could
Beautiful house, with so much potential. Is the roof sound, because that would be essential before you start rebuilding.
You know what, it actually is. The roof for the house and a couple of the barns were replaced in 2011, so in the scheme of things, its pretty new which was a big reason we bought the place.
@@citytosmallholding excellent
@1:24 is the name of the linoleum manufacturer ’Brumfelt’?
I thought it was Brumfield no?
Think I would have left the floor covering down to protect this great floor boards if you are going to be ripping plaster off the walls
Yeeeah, had a few comments like that - that would have been very sensible. Definitely kicking ourselves a bit with that!
i dont't know... maybe a bit rash getting rid of the toilet/kitchen would save many steps if you whipped up a truly potent batch of curry..... jus sayin! wow the bones of this house i am truly envious that you get to do this, if only i had this chance when i was your age. i am so enjoying this journey.
Honestly we saved you the shots but I feel like someone had that same idea with those toilets - hence us being very keen to get them out 😂
Da iawn ❤❤
Diolch!
I liked the doors and baseboards, but the toilet in the kitchen was a terrible idea.
Agreed 🤣
Maybe the old lino would have protected the wood floors, then take it up later. Sorry its a bit after the event though.
Yeeeah that actually is a really good point ☹
Are you keeping that Welsh dresser? Also, where in west wales is this? Looks stunning!
Absolutely - its beautiful! We are in Ceredigion.
Lino is wonderful in its own right. Insulating, hard wearing and expensive. Useful in shed if not in house.old pattern irreplaceable.
Please please please wear a paper face/dust mask at a bare minimum , A fpp3 type mask would be ideal , who knows what your breathing in 😮. Loving the progress you both work very hard 💪🏻
Yes we have learnt our lesson now 😫
