Gotta love a lathe ceiling for making the finest, most exquisite dust ever. Trouble is, it's absolutely addictive and all the ceilings and walls will need to come off now that you've started because nothing, absolutely nothing will have a straight line in it until you put it there! Good luck! It'll be done sooner than you know.
Hi ya, enjoying the journey, looking forward to next episode, Tip: Damp down dusty work places with water, via watering can or just splash by hand, Makes for a cleaner working space. All the best. G
What a surprise to see that floor sitting on dirt. Wow. Well, you will make it right and be rewarded with a house that shelters you for a lifetime. Keep up the morale and remember to have fun. Someday this will be a memory and having fun will make it so much the sweeter. Stick a wheel on that gate, let it carry the load. ❤
Renovating an old house, there are ups and downs, joy and disappointment, but the time will come that you will be proud of your work and your lovely home. When all the dirty work is over, that's when you'll be relieved and eager to move on to the next phase of work. Good luck and see you there.
I just binge watched the series so far. Its brilliant. Your commentary is amusing and relatable! I recently moved to England from the Netherlands with my partner and my dream is to do something similar to you someday. I was raised in the Netherlands (with an English dad), but have been so drawn to rural places in the UK. As someone who is currently in London like you were, I'll be sure to follow along! Keep up the great work!
At least the wooden floor downstairs is only in that room, it looks like it had previously been repaired with short bits attached to some of the ends. The gate looks far nicer than the fence panels and things are moving along nicely, you must be feeling excited and anxious at the same time. It's a beautiful house, I can see why you bought it and I am looking forward to seeing you make it home.❤️
i used to live in a 400 year old cottage, i think the damp problem wouldnt of been noticable when it was lived in as their would be a fire going daily. in my old place if i went away for more than a week it would take 2 weeks to get all the stones warm again, well insulated when renovating and had central heating but if the fire hadnt been on in a week and it was cold outside you could feel it creeping through the floors and walls. stoves and ranges beat open fires, at present tho a open fire is all we have, during a few storms its been a godsend, having a fire provided heat and cooking when we had no power, the longest we had no electricity was 4 days but for some around us it was a week.
@@citytosmallholding i moved to sw ireland 15 years ago, although its a little warmer and bad winters are less comon, theres been some that have rivaled those that i experienced in the uk, the worst winter we had our central heating broke down and it took 6 weeks to get the parts to fix it due to everywhere being snowed in, also didnt help we were living up the side of a mountain, views were great tho, somewhat spoiled now imho as the light houses no longer have a sweep of light, as they have changed them to LED tech. coldest ive experienced was -27c up in scotland so most winters since then its been a doddle. last 2 years weve had no snow and very little frosts down here in the sw, even got potatoes in january with no issues. do think tho weve got to have another cold one as its been a couple of years now. as a kid i spent quite a bit of time in north wales hill farm area, was always great to come inside at winter to get warm by the fire or the kitchen range.
Great to see you getting it done. Im guessing youll be digging out the entire ground floor to add a dpm throughout otherwise youll have cold damp floors also a great opportunity to add underfloor heating throughout the groundfloor.
Here is a tip for you: Screw a couple of old (but well fitting) shoes to the bottoms of two plastic buckets with a lid and use them as a means to get closer to any overhead work... When you will do the ceiling dry wall you may want to try it... (spoiler alert: it works, especially on those relatively low ceilings)...
If you used some of those wood boards as vertical slats screwed to that gate-frame it would a lot “less unglamorous” (to coin a double negative!). Keep going, we’re all agog!! Les
Get stuck in, that’s the way ! I did mention on my last comment about advice for your chimneys/fireplaces of course that’s free of charge advice. I also suspect you are getting loads of advice on how to do things, which can be annoying, but if I could suggest and it’s along way off after watching this latest episode as when you have the electrics done you might want to consider raising the plug/switches from the normal skirting board height to about 2 1/2’ to 3’ up, we did this because it saves you bending down plugging in vacuums etc and if your planning on staying into your senior years it makes a difference. Anyway well done both. Ray 👍
@citytosmallholding LOL I should have been a bit more tactful 😳 It's just that your house is so beautiful and traditional but some things just don't belong in there 🙃
Wow, your really getting to the bottom of things and doing a great job while your at it. The new gate looks perfect and shout out to ya dad for his stella lawnmowing!!❤
40 years ago family friends moved into the old homestead on their farm, a friend was showing how water diviner rods worked, for a joke he walked through the lounge, where the owners father had sat in front of the fire, the rods went crazy, lifted the floor boards there was a spring under that exact spot, but someone had put a drain outside the house and the water ran into it.
So pleased to see you both wearing masks, I use the same one for woodturning. Obviously you now understand the potential issues with welting the corner of the fire place. Good to let of steam thought. A nice woodburner will go well in there. Go careful with the timber from this room, woodworm, dry rot, wet rot etc.
Ah yeah we had to destroy the wood from this room as per the surveyors instructions but we will keep everything else! Yeah I learnt my lesson on the titles 😂
Glamorous gate or not you guys are stepping ahead. Well done on the front room. We had the same, beams on the solemn too. We lifted and replaced with insulation and concrete. Job done. Looking forward to next weeks update. Keep firing on.

Well done again both. What a task you set yourself. Me, I love a length of 4x2 and how adaptable it can be to all sorts of tasks so when Gav ripped into the lathe and plaster with it, well, it made for an aggressive and impressive tear down. The fact that you both turn to a get on with it is so refreshing to see. Those old ceiling laths are great as starting kindling for a fire 🙂 Also keep the floorboards…. Cost a few quid to buy original floorboards at a reclamation yard.
Was Gavin a vandal as a kid ... he seems to enjoy the demolishing a bit too much 🤣you can get wheels to put on the latch end of the gate to make it easier to open and close.
Do you guys have a plan for the floors on ground floor? Will you dig down and then pour a pad? Or are you going to do any reinforcing interior or exterior under the house? Really curious how this will play out!
Hey, we are going to dig down and put underfloor heating in and then all the bits and bobs that comes with that - screed etc etc - Gav is better at the details than me 😂
Well you have touched on a bit of a sore spot there Karen 😂 - I would love to but Gav is saying because we will have all the pipe work under there and if we want any insulation we will basically lose it!

That's a very good idea!
All old floors sat on dirt, airbricks in the walls kept the air circulating and prevented damp.
Worth having a look at Make Do Grow for the way they solved a similar problem (no foundations, dirt floor, damp). Very innovative.
