The best investment you will make on any smallholding is to buy your own mini digger. I have had my digger for 18 years now. Looked after it carefully and never left it out in the rain. It's done no end of work for me and paid for itself over and over. Machinery is the key otherwise you will struggle and be knackered all the time.
@citytosmallholding When you look at the hire charges even getting one on the slate pays. You only have to use it twice a month and your repayments are less than the hire charges... (A good quality recognised brand second hand is the way forward) Also if you have digger you enter into the world of having something to offer your neighbours in a trade deal for use of some of their kit.....
It's really unusual to see how much she likes being in there, but she is with Gav lol. It's so funny and adorable. It's also much safer than being out around it.❤
The excavator helped you a lot, it's a huge area so the equipment is worth its weight in gold. The dog is wonderful, you can see that he loves you very much. See you soon
Thoroughly enjoying your adventure. It's a breath of fresh air to watch a documentary like this, unlike most documentaries that just fill time with fat. So looking forward to the end result. Keep keeping it real
Another great episode. I’ve never seen so much mud shifted with determination and style! Those moments with Seren in the cab will live with you both forever. Just special little snippets of time which go to embody everything that is great with this channel. Thanks again for sharing. Wayne.
It has to be said that if this was Gav's first early attempts at digger driving/excavation, he's a natural! Not easy to master so quickly! And.... When that tree finally succumbed you're shout out of "Well done!" definitely resounded with a local Welsh accent! 🏴 Da iawn! 🏴🏴👌 Seren certainly living up to her name too! (In Welsh... A Star ⭐!"
It's good to see you guys have a laugh. Having the digger is making a huge difference fast, you never know what you are doing to find in all of those brambles. It will be good to see how it looks if it ever gets a chance to dry out. Hopefully you'll be getting an all clear for the new sewage system soon. ❤
Slowly progressing considering all the bad weather 👍 Love that your dog is so interested and loves that digger 💗 Discovering more overrgrown bits to the land 👍😄
Hi guys, great video again. As someone else said if you installed a bio disc or an air tec treatment plant they have a pump within them that pumps out pure water and you can discharge into a ditch , the reps will tell you that you could drink it but when challenged they never do. Maybe the rules are different in Wales as in England these tanks are a requirement even if you have an old existing brick built tank which arguably work better than modern ones.👍
Awesome work amazing to see the width of the lane once it was cleared , fantastic to see how your dog has settled so well with you...she really enjoys the outdoor work & is certainly loving her new home with you both..she's such a lovely dog...a perfect match for you both...looking forward to your next video already...
Hope the septic system is viable, well worth the investment. Great job clearing the lane, all that debris would make great compost. Hope you can store it. While it is winter you should see if a friendly farmer with a hedge cutting attachment on a tractor could get your hedges trimmed back. It would take them half an hour. The scale of these tasks is too much to achieve anything by hand or small machine. The more maintenance that can be done swiftly by machine the better. Prioritise your time for the important stuff, both now and in the future.
Yes! We actually got a local farmer to do all of our perimeter hedges so will look into that for sure and yes we have started our compost piles! Luckily space is the one thing we do have!
@citytosmallholding The space makes it easier and less time consuming to organise things. Time is the most precious resource, so managing things well and enjoying it are what you will remember.
Blwyddyn newydd dda! Nice depth of topsoil there, and good to see it draining relatively fast. Mine, on clay, would still be there next year! With brambles, bounce a strimmer up and down, it cuts the brambles without them twirling round the head of the strimmer, and chops them all up into little bits that can be raked easily - years of experience talking. Keep going - I envy your energy!
You have quite a bit of land to maintain, looks like you could do with a brush cutter for the brambles. I have one for my surburban garden which is bordered by bushes. Would make light work of those brambles xx
Consider getting a second hand tractor, preferably with a front end loader attachment. Great for carrying the fire wood, rubbish etc etc and loading out the scrapings from your access. A 3 point link flail mower will get on top of the brambles. I have a 40 year old kubota 4wd diesel tractor and without it I would not have been physically unable to get on top of all the clearing and maintenance required on our 22 ha. I hate to say it but to control invasive weeds often herbicides are the only option, brambles can be controlled with metsulfuron methyl which is also environmentally friendly. A second hand 3 point hitch pto spray unit can usually be picked up cheaply or built easily. Best of luck with your endeavors, from Western Australia.
Gavin so serious until you get rid of the camera and start talking it’s laughing at you about your bramble injury.😂 This was a major eye-opener to waste disposal! This should never be taken for granted. Thank you for sharing❤
get in touch with the local hedge layers group (if there is one and offer your track as somewhere that they could use for a training day or the likes... you might get half of it done and a bit of free tuition and then you can tackle the other half yourself🙃
@ 💕You should add Buy Me A Coffee (Google it) to your page & remember that you are Not forcing people to donate they will only do so if they really want to💕You have Nothing to lose by adding it if you do so add with maximum payment options it’s good because every £5 per cup donated goes directly to you & a person can donate as many cups as they wish each time think of it as every 10 cups = £50💕I watched one guy who mentioned it on his channel once a fortnight & asked people to donate to buying beams for his cottage then flooring roof tiles💕He would breakdown the cost of items needed like per beam/tile etc… the once he raised the amount he would say the next item he needed to buy he started with small items & his first was a log splitter he raised over £30,000💕He was Very honest & said his salary didn’t cover everything💕
@citytosmallholding 💕Unfortunately nothing is showing up maybe it will be there next video, you’ll need to mention it coz people very rarely look through the description every week💕
Hello! I am watching and following your channel from Edmond, OK USA. I just finished up all of the first videos and was so hoping a new one would be up today, and what just popped up?! A new video. I really love your channel.
Don't worry about Crocs & socks, a bruised/broken toe is not long term damage whereas demolition without a mask could be. Great to see you getting full value from the digger hire cost. What you need now is a tractor with a hedge cutter to beat back the sides and top, do you have a friendly neighbouring farmer with one ? or the funds to hire one in ? They can get such a lot done in such a short space. Rember, hedge cutting season finishes soon Mid Feb I think ??
Ah yeah we have had some one in to do our perimeter hedges, they just weren’t keen to do the track and we didn’t know what was in there, we will be able to get them to come next year though and do it!
I Love watching the Beautiful Countryside views there! I am curious what color you plan to paint the outside of the home and will you out a cover over the front door. Enjoy your videos abd you young lady work as hard as your husband
Thanks very much! We need to take the render off as it’s concrete and causing a lot of damage to the house and ideally we would leave it as stone but if not we will render it again but with lime and haven’t decided on a colour yet! Currently deciding doors though which is such a hard decision!
Hope you guys are fans of Justin Rhodes channel as I can see you two being British version. He is full of information about small homesteading and raising his family on the land. I love watching him and his family and I love watching you guys fulfilling your dream.
Looking at the grass and reeds growing I'm sure your finding it very soggy, I would be looking at putting some drain tiles around the buildings and field tiles down to the two streams
If you can't get your hands on larger machinery to take down the rest of the brush, at the very least, you ought to get a smaller chainsaw (smaller than the one used to take down the tree). I can't imagine trying to cut all that down with hedge clippers. I'm new to the channel since your last episode, really enjoying it. I love your dog!
Annoying to see the efforts a private household needs to go through to ensure untreated water doesn't go into the waterways, yet water companies dump millions of tons into our water system regularly without any fear
The photo on the rescue places’ website was really funny and when we met her she just rolled on her back and demanded stomach scratches so we knew she was the one 😂
Buy a brush hog or better yet a mulcher if you an afford is even better Saves time and energy. Here in the US you can get one that you stand on for around $4,000. Those brambles, unless cut down will take over and are a fire hazard.. Ours were well over 18ft high when we got our property and had to chop them down as close to the ground as possible in order to control. They will grow back but you can decide what you want to keep and what you don"t.
Every local authorities are different in Wales I put loads of them in and every one differs the manufacturers say you can drink the water that comes out of it 🤷🏻🤷🏻
Out of interest would it not be cheaper to put a pump out tank in? that way you could install it closer to the cottage and not having to install a hugely long drain out to the new location.
Who doesn't love a digger? So what happens if you don't have land and/or none of it is that far from a water course? Also I think treatment plants need power and I did wonder during that 4 day power cut after the storm, what happens then? I'm on a septic too. Pretty common in Wales. When I last looked you could still replace like for like.. hope that hasn't changed 😮
Yeah I think there has been some pretty big changes recently or so the engineer was saying but because of our plans we definitely need to go to a sceptic tank
I know if you're converting/adding then you do have to go for a plant. I was part of a water sampling project recently across Wales and water quality was pretty good across rural mid/North Wales (many many septics) but got worse the further South you went (higher populations, more industry, more mains drainage) so whether they really cause a problem is up for debate!
Thanks for the breakdown! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
40 metres from a watercourse makes sense but that's really bad luck. I was on septic tanks for 35 years . If done right you never have to worry and it's money well spent. Living on mains water and sewerage for the past year and the quarterly cost is huge for a single person.
We had those once in Malaysia. Our maid had the giggles every time she served them. You can't grow melons though as they don't filter out the bad stuff.
Wholesome + Septic Tank = Huh? Oh, I don't know. I have a pair of lipstick red crocks that I wear with my rainbow knee socks! I look like an escapee from a looney bin, but I'm comfy! They go perfectly with my lime green hoodie and my navy yoga pants. LMAO! I am the perfect picture of eccentricity!
@citytosmallholding they tested mine its one of them treatment plants with 3 chambers that filters the water. Some guy tested the water coming out and said it was cleaner than tap water. But yeah I still don't think i'll be drinking from it haha
Hi, another great video, Gavin , assuming that you have a petrol strimmer, please invest in a Brush Cutter Strimmer Mulching Blade, about £14 off ebay, it will save you hours of work and last a hundred times longer than strimmer cord, .... if it it doesnt do the job . I, will give you your money back 🙂
Is it going to be a s**t cruncher , sorry effluent masticator ? or a bio treatment plant . Also with the amount of people it serves , depending on how many guests you may have it might be advisable not to go for a 2-3 person one
Hi, I cannot wait for the Dude, the Dog and the Digger to hit cinemas.
Hahahaha YES!!!
The best investment you will make on any smallholding is to buy your own mini digger. I have had my digger for 18 years now. Looked after it carefully and never left it out in the rain. It's done no end of work for me and paid for itself over and over. Machinery is the key otherwise you will struggle and be knackered all the time.
Yeah we would really like to get one, just a budget thing at the moment as we need to spend so much on the house
@citytosmallholding When you look at the hire charges even getting one on the slate pays. You only have to use it twice a month and your repayments are less than the hire charges... (A good quality recognised brand second hand is the way forward)
Also if you have digger you enter into the world of having something to offer your neighbours in a trade deal for use of some of their kit.....
Yeah we are definitely having a look at our options as it would be so useful to have one of our own
It's really unusual to see how much she likes being in there, but she is with Gav lol. It's so funny and adorable. It's also much safer than being out around it.❤
Work goes so much better when you have a work buddy. ❤❤
The excavator helped you a lot, it's a huge area so the equipment is worth its weight in gold. The dog is wonderful, you can see that he loves you very much. See you soon
"Please, lets just ignore the Crocs and sox".... best line....thanks for the video
Since it’s turned cold and rainy here, I too have been wearing warm wooly socks and crocs. It’s what all the styling lassies wear 🐊
Thoroughly enjoying your adventure. It's a breath of fresh air to watch a documentary like this, unlike most documentaries that just fill time with fat. So looking forward to the end result. Keep keeping it real
Thanks so much! Yeah we try to keep it without too many filler shots, also because Gav straight out refuses to do them 😂
Another great episode. I’ve never seen so much mud shifted with determination and style! Those moments with Seren in the cab will live with you both forever. Just special little snippets of time which go to embody everything that is great with this channel. Thanks again for sharing. Wayne.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Keep the videos and the smiles coming, lots of people are urging you on.
Awesome progress. Best bit of kit I’ve ever bought is the Stihl Kombi system and the Oregon mulching blade it turns brambles to dust.
Kombi system is awesome and if you feeling the need for an upper body workout add the pole extension for hedge trimming, pole saw work at height.
Gavs strimmer recently broke so we have ordered a new one with a brush cutter so hopefully that helps
Ambitious folks encourage me😊 thank you. 😊
I’m enjoying watching your progress. ❤🇦🇺
Thank you! 😊
Oregon Mulching blade for your strimmer.

Aaah unfortunately we must admit, he has done digger work before, jack of all trades is our Gav 😂
@citytosmallholding I thought 💭 he looked like a smooth operator! Slick and resourceful! 😉🤗
" day off work to play with a digfer 😄 boys and their toys ❤️
It's good to see you guys have a laugh. Having the digger is making a huge difference fast, you never know what you are doing to find in all of those brambles. Yes fingers crossed!!
That track is huge 😮😮😮 and the most expensive and valuable thing you can do is your septic tank updating. Adulting I'm afraid 😢 great work 👍
Yeah not a glamorous project but a very necessary one!
Slowly progressing considering all the bad weather 👍
Love that your dog is so interested and loves that digger 💗

Great to see another update on the farm, looks like a well spent day with the digger.
Great video, you can’t beat real life!
You should do a course on hedge-laying!
Yeah I would love to do that!
Doing a fantastic job. you’ll get there, you’ve got the skill got the determination plus your heart’s are in it. Keep smiling 👍👍😆😆❤️😆
You two are so hardworking and cute! Things are taking shape!
Thank you!! 😊
You know what fair play massive project there doing a fantastic job ❤❤

Well done guts 👏👏👏👏👏👏💕💙
Hahaha...I'll come back for the clean stuff! 😆
Thank you for the lovely video.
That is a great piece of land clearance well done with the cess pits and good luck with the regs
Ahhh septic tank content - the real gold! 😂
😂😂
Gavin so serious until you get rid of the camera and start talking it’s laughing at you about your bramble injury.😂 This was a major eye-opener to waste disposal! This should never be taken for granted. Thank you for sharing❤

Oh the joy of percolation tests! Our clay was not as good as your soil…but fortunately we were investigating for a soakaway not a septic tank!
Scythe might have been more useful than loppers as you can cut the weeds and clear at ground level as you go x
Good work and belated happy New Year to you all.
Sat down with my lunch to watch this one but I think I'll come back to it after finishing food...
Hahahaha yeah maybe give it a minute!
Much progress made! Keep on keeping on! ❤ XXX
HNY to you both, looking forward to more updates of the farm upgrades.
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it and what great progress. The track will be amazing when you finish it. Well done all three of you!
Keep up the great work!
You need a pole hedge trimmer make your life easier 🎉
Well done. Septic tank rules are very important.
So we are finding out 😂
💕I think you need a garden shredder to help you get rid of everything then you can use it around your property💕
Yess 😫 we just don’t have the budget

Your dog. Looks like the rescue worked then!
Love you're videos cheers from cheshire
Septic tanks, diggers and mud. What more could we ask for on a Sunday, eh?
Wholesome! Goes lovely with your Sunday dinner!
Great work.

Oh no! We haven’t heard of him, will check him out, thanks!
Your dog is just like my Sam, (Sambuka) I miss him.
❤️
Looking at the grass and reeds growing I'm sure your finding it very soggy, I would be looking at putting some drain tiles around the buildings and field tiles down to the two streams

Our strimmer was broken and I’ll be honest I can’t remember why we didn’t use our hedge trimmer 😂. Thanks! She’s the best!
Should get an mot failure pickup to use just on the farm to move things about. Snother channel i watch bought one. The restoration couple.
That’s a really good idea!
Happy new year guys 🏴🏴🏴❤️
Seren was adorable in the digger with her dad. Great job done by all.
You need a cordless hedge trimmer
Annoying to see the efforts a private household needs to go through to ensure untreated water doesn't go into the waterways, yet water companies dump millions of tons into our water system regularly without any fear
That is SO true!
Love watching you guys, however it makes me nervous seeing Seren running loose around the diggers etc 😅😊
what a great little dog you rescued what made you pick that one?
The photo on the rescue places’ website was really funny and when we met her she just rolled on her back and demanded stomach scratches so we knew she was the one 😂
You should find out who the local farm contractors are and they'll be able to cut back and maintain the overgrowth and move all that mud.
Ahhhh unfortunately we don’t have the budget for that, we just have to do everything we can ourselves
Buy a brush hog or better yet a mulcher if you an afford is even better Saves time and energy. Here in the US you can get one that you stand on for around $4,000. One man and his dog
One girl and a thorn
Ah hahahahah yes exactly!
Well done. Ddiolch 🎉. Love Seren (Star) ❤️
Every local authorities are different in Wales I put loads of them in and every one differs the manufacturers say you can drink the water that comes out of it 🤷🏻🤷🏻
Oh my days 🤮🤮
Episode about waste disposal, opens with the line 'Time to take a log'. Ok then 😆
We like to keep is real 😂
A good day isn't a good day without the crocs and the Socks 😂😂
in the States we call this a 'perk test'
Out of interest would it not be cheaper to put a pump out tank in? that way you could install it closer to the cottage and not having to install a hugely long drain out to the new location.
We haven’t been given that option? I’m not sure if that is something that’s accepted here unfortunately?
No hedge cutter? That would make small work of that lane!
Friendly farmer with a tractor mounted hedge cutter required me thinks!
Who’d have guessed the dog loves the digger. Or maybe she just wants to be with dad! Great video, your ground is certainly very muddy!❤
Who doesn't love a digger? So what happens if you don't have land and/or none of it is that far from a water course? Also I think treatment plants need power and I did wonder during that 4 day power cut after the storm, what happens then?

The secret to clearing brambles in a machete
Definitely nothing wrong with crocks & socks!
Living on mains water and sewerage for the past year and the quarterly cost is huge for a single person.
any time you see wild tomatoes growing in a field you'll know that someone had their septic tank cleared and pumped it onto their fields
We had those once in Malaysia. Our maid had the giggles every time she served them. You can't grow melons though as they don't filter out the bad stuff.
Oh man that’s so gross 🤮🤮😂
he is digging with the wrong bucket he is useing the levelling bucket.
Its a motorway !
?
Wholesome + Septic Tank = Huh?

Yep, that is exactly where I am headed 😂😂
I think you need to get a tractor with an hedge cutter attached would be able to cut the track down in no time
Ah yesss but we would also need a lot of money for that 😂
@citytosmallholding usually £100 per day
Must have changed recently mine empties into a stream lol
Yeah it’s pretty gross when you think about it really 😂
@citytosmallholding they tested mine its one of them treatment plants with 3 chambers that filters the water. Some guy tested the water coming out and said it was cleaner than tap water. But yeah I still don't think i'll be drinking from it haha
Aaaah yeah will give that a miss 😂
How cool, diggers are fun. Might be time to hire goats to eat you brambles! Schedule them in every quarter
Ah yes, Gav’s strimmer broke so we are just waiting on the new one arriving
You need some leather gloves for bramble work
Is it going to be a s**t cruncher , sorry effluent masticator ? or a bio treatment plant . Also with the amount of people it serves , depending on how many guests you may have it might be advisable not to go for a 2-3 person one
😂 I think it would be the latter and yeah we will get a big one just to future proof.
Youll be in by christmas
Love this!
