In the hood we were always taught to swing first thats just how it goes down rather get in trouble for swinging first than knocked out cold or severely injured.
Excellent advice (fellow instructor here). I also remind my students about the legal term ‘disparity of force’ (which is pretty much what you’re saying); in particular as it applies to a woman being attacked by a man. I’ve noticed that people feel much more comfortable using the “most effective” self-defense methods when they feel legally justified.
