Gotrek and Felix are actual adventurers simply put into WH Battle from WH Fantasy setting. Series of books creates a good story arch and notes their adventures. Whoever put them into WH Battle setting simply done a quick cash grab manuever.
about the Powerplayer in the party thing, yeh it usually aint a problem in my group cuz we're all like that, but then the worse offender of them all got to be our DM and it was miserable, with fights so ridiculous that i actively avoided fights, in any other game my team can go from a fair fight to complete domination but when a Gotrek gets to be a DM it can get real ugly real fast.
I love how Felix slowly comes to understand that he is a hopeless adrenaline junkie who keeps travelling with Gotrek because he just fucking loves to fight impossible odds.
It's a common but satisfying thing in fiction when done correctly, like Rook from black lagoon for example, both Felix and him were woefully underprepared to deal with the things they ended up doing but they stayed around with their slayers because fuck if it wasn't the best trip they've ever had.
to bad its never really a plotpoint of much relivence. its only really talked about in felix’s musings. though i just finished zombieslayer, dont know if its a point latter on.
@@SwordWieldingDuck It isn't something he ever thinks out loud clearly, but by the time of Beast Slayer in Prague, Felix thinks to himself how he has adapted and now thrive at Gotreks side. He enjoys the trill of blade to blade combat and rarely seriously consider leaving or fleeing anymore.
I don't remember that at all aside him wondering if that's his reason he keeps on with Gotrek. By the time he rocks the cradle with Kat, he's been wanted to stop travelling and feels guilty for it. Felix was Gotrek's friend and Remember, but his prime goal in life was to get laid and settle down.
One of my favorite moments from the series is when Gotrek & Felix finally meet Thanquol on the Skaven submarine. Thanquol is all "my nemisisses, finally after X years, I will destroy you", and their reaction is just "who is this rat?".
There's a good one where Felix meets Karl Franz who saves him from a solo duel with an Ork Warlord and Wyvern. Karl says it was the bravest thing he's ever seen, while Felix promptly faints.

That rule about Gotrek's shoulder plate has flavour text saying "On his left shoulder - the side that was once protected by Felix Jager" and it's heart breaking
it's covered in the Realmgate series as well. Gotrek lost his left eye and is used to Felix fighting on his left to cover him. He noticed that he was being pushed on his left without anyone (Felix) there, so he armored up.
My favourite example of Dwarves being portrayed as alien comes from Demonslayer. There's a forgotten Dwarf Karak full of demons in the far North, where the handful of Dwarves left survive by hiding and using secret passages. When the heroes reach them, they plan their escape, but the planning gets slowed down by them trying to work out how much of their ancestral treasure they can bring with them and which parts to prioritise. Felix steps in and suggests that they're wasting time and should just go now, because surely their lives are more important than any amount of treasure? Every Dwarf in the room then proceeds to stare at him as if he'd grown a second head before deciding to ignore the insane Manling and going back to their discussion.
Gotrek and Felix stories are basically: Felix: That is the most horrifying and grotesque *insert monster* I've ever seen. I'm surely going do die horribly now. Gotrek: Brutally murders *insert monster* in whacky and comical way
LOL I wouldn't even say it "whacky or comical" at all, gotrek is far from funny. It's very grim book hell the frrst few books have them fighting a guy who was mutating babies and kids. Most of what he kills is often times in beyond brutal ways lol
I would say a lot of the time gotrek is beaten and almost killed until Felix either backstabbed the enemy or helped figure a way out of it at a critical moment
My favourite Snorri line in the the book DragonSlayer is when they(Felix, Gotrek and Snorri) got back to Kislev, there was a Skaven invasion (guess led by who :P ). Gotrek was like: "I think I heard a Rat Ogre or two. I call dips." and Snorri was like "But Snorri wanted to kill a big ratty too." which Felix responded with "You can have mine, Snorri" which made him smile and to which he answered with a big smile "Thank you, yoiung master Felix!" That line made me crack XD
Yep. He has many moments that can bring a smile. The only thing that annoyed me was when he wouldn't carry Gotrek's axe because it was his weapon and Felix had to.

While being a wanted criminal in the Empire Felix is named "Friend of the Dwarfs" making him the second human after Sigmar to be granted that titel. And the crazy slayer engineer used his parachutes to airdrop more slayers onto a chaos army from his armored and armed airship after it ran out of bombs while stating something along the line of "time to get serious"
@@Alex-xt1rr I read that a few weeks ago, and don't recall slayers airdroping out of the spirit of grungni. I think some warriors came down the rope ladder, but I don't remember parachuting down.
In older lore, it was pointed out that Gotrek and Felix fought Malus Darkblade and Malus was one of the only people to ever live through the encounter with the duo. Tz'Arkan was horrified and forbid Malus from ever meeting them again.

For all the lore of barely mentioned places in the Warhammer world Gotrek and Felix are responsible for (Araby and Albion), I find it deeply hilarious that their time in Cathay is never elaborated on beyond "they couldn't find anything to finally kill Gotrek so they went home."
On this note, it is still super annoying to this day that we never got to read what G&F were actually doing in Araby, Ind, Khuresh, Cathay and Nippon, but rather the next novel starts just as they have returned from there.
@@vahlen5281 There was a short story about them heading east, it's included in the omnibus, where they fight a yeti (spelled yhetee). Otherwise the whole thing was just an excuse to have timeskip when the new author took over writing the novels. Would be fun if someone went back and expounded on those adventures now that Cathay actually has lore.

The whole point of the slayers vow is that it's a complete rejection of suicide. It's more like a sentence of execution, but you're allowed to fight back. It's my favorite dwarf sub-theme because it is a fundamental rejection of suicide. They don't just go fight a monster that can kill them. They're soldiers who are sentenced to death, so they still try to be useful by fighting enemies they think they can beat. As they grow stronger they seek out stronger enemies
You know what….ive never thought about that…..I’m taking this as further anti-suicide motivstion. “When you feel the world is not worth it, don’t end it. Take an example from the dawi of warhsmmer - fight back and see just how long you left adventure could be”
Interesting piece of trivia for all Snorri fans out there: Snorri is actually dead in the lore. Way before Snorri got its character fleshed out (i.e. years before the book series), we got to read about his death in battle. It was in a short story included, I think, in the Empire`s 4th edition Army Book. Basically a huge battle develops between the imperials and orcs, the former being helped by a contingent of dwarf slayers, among whom Gotrek, Felix and another salyer called Snorri. At the end of the battle (it's the same battle in which Gotrek utters his now famous line-turned-Special-Rule: "Look Snorri, trolls!"), Felix finds Gotrek next to a recently dug grave, and Gotrek says (with a smile): "Here lies Snorri. He killed four trolls. The last one fell on top of him."
@@GLevario12 I think they lampshade that in Giantslayer a bit by referring to it as like a possible outcome or it was some sort of vision or something, but it’s been a long time since I’ve read that passage so I might be missing something.
That story in in the Empire 4th Ed army book. At the time William King (the father of G&ze and if the modern WHFB lore) was in charge of the lore (see Mannfred vs G&F in the 4th Ed undead AB) and he wrote that story before G&F became a huge success and their earlier short stories were collected in Trollslayer and Skavenslayer. Later on (demon slayer) he introduced Snorri. The explanation is those are different time lines in which things developed differently

I like the low key nature of the novels. It adds to the badassery, but adds a tinge of tragedy that the only one who'll remember any of this, is most likely Felix's brother.
Or that most likely anything able to kill Gotrek will surely kill Felix right after therefore leaving the saga w/o a proper ending. The early books could easily seem to never get a chance to publish b4 we find out about Felix mailing them back to Otto.

The collection of stories about Gotrek and Felix fighting Thanquol’s forces, who Thanquol actively sabotages, takes place in one book, Skavenslayer. A good book, and a damned good entry for the series as a whole.
There is a later book, Manslayer (book 9), where they return to Nuln and have to stop another plot (Chaos, this time), with the epilogue signifying Thanquol's return to the series.

Man, as a Tomb King enjoyer I have to admit, Slayers are the best thing in fantasy. Having played a year-long WFRP campaign with a guy who took the slayer oath end-game, they are amazing. This dwarf was a master craftsman who fought with a huge gromril warhammer and in between slaying would forge sculptures of our adventures. Of course my Sigmarite priest was his best friend.

The thing I liked about gotrej and Felix was that up until the later books it was implied they were just another set of heroes. They were a snapshot into the world rather than unique god entity
While I personally think they’ve always been a cut above the rest, you’re absolutely right. That short story where they meet another slayer and HIS remembrancer proves that they’re not even the only odd pair of Man and Dwarf wandering the world for the exact same reason they are. They give the Warhammer world a whole lot of depth. Truth be told as awful as the End Times were, the Gotrek and Felix novels set during them do a great job of depicting what it’s like for someone who doesn’t have all the knowledge of prophecies and the Incarnates of Magic going through them - desperately trying to survive and always caught between planning for after the crisis is over while also acknowledging the fact that this time, there might not be a normal world (or indeed any world) to return to.
While im not really into gotrek and Felix, there was this story of where gotrek fought(and killed) an infernal guard. He later figures out that the infernal guard are pretty much chaos dwarf slayers, who wear armor instead of going ass naked. He later thinks to himself that while chaos dwarfs are corrupted, they are still dwarfs deep down.
Thanquol for all the hilarity he brings, isn't someone to really take lightly. He is legitimately devious, and is one of the most powerful skaven mages around. In an attempt to capture that dwarven airship he not only halted it in it's tracks with his magic, he actually started reeling it in. Max upon witnessing this said to himself, " I dont wanna try dueling that guy." His ego does lead to his downfall, in fact one time when he had Gotrek and Felix captured, he was overjoyed to finally have his archnemesis at his mercy. He was flabbergasted to learn they not only had NO IDEA who he was they had zero inkling they had ever been constantly interfereing with his plans.
Never forget that he not only summoned SKARBRAND but lived to tell the tale. Fun fact: this incident is also a big part of why Queek despises grey seers.
@@owenkasaboski6902 Thanquol's Doom. It's the third book in the Thanquol trilogy (after Grey Seer and Temple Of The Serpent). The trilogy is set in the time-skip between the Gotrek & Felix books 7 and 8.
Max also lost to Thanquol before that happened, which means Thanquol is already strong without the warpstone cocaine and after the warpstone cocaine that rat is absolutely monstrous. Basically after the events from Daemon Slayer book the Skaven attacked the outpost in Kislev near the Chaos Wastes and everyone there is held in prison

I just love the idea of chaos gods looking at gotrek carving his way through their most elite soldiers like they're butter WHILST IN A PLACE THAT DOESNT FOLLOW THE RULES OF PHYSICS. . . I just picture them going: "fucking. . . What?"
Considering he has one of Grimnir's axes, I'm not surprised. The axes of Grimnir make you about half as powerful as an ancestor god. Gotrek has one, the dwarf high king has the other. And Grombrindal brought one with him when he came back to the mortal world

Am I the only one who feels bad for felix not being in AOS. It really pains me to see Felix's last moments in the old world was being trapped underground, writing how he only wished to see his family again as he runs out of air.
Part of me wants Gotrek to find Felix as a Stormcast but he has died so often that he doesn’t remember who he is. And Gotrek has to help his friend come back. Probably by going up to Nagash and kicking the shit out of the god of death until he gives back Felix’s soul.
Exactly what i wrote on a review. I got introduced to Warhamer trough Total war so its great to hear stories about the everyday people who live in Nuln, or the garrison of Karak eight peaks.
@@oligb1469 I always pictured Gotrek as more guilt-ridden and slightly bitter with moments of true friendship with Felix occasionally shining through. BRIAN BLESSED's bombastic performance feels a little too hammy for my headcannon, but that doesn't mean it isn't extremely enjoyable.

I made an OP character once, by accident. I'm not joking, I rolled well and made a Half-Orc fighter with 20 strength. I was given a +1 weapon (everyone got something special for their character) and eventually bought plate mail and a shield. The most notable thing to me was when we got assaulted by a demon whose CR was two levels beyond our party and I bodied it easily after about 3 rounds where the rest of the team did nothing to it. I showed up for one round, did half its HP and then killed it in the next round as it tried to flee. The next best thing was when I took 3 rounds to get to the party and killed every creature they fought in two. Man I felt bad. Any monsters that could challenge me would kill the other 4 and anything that could challenge them I would kill easily.
See form the sounds of it you neither planned it out nor spent 3 hours using mental gymnastics in preparation to justify why it isn’t actually that overpowered, you’ve done no wrong.
@@CharalamposKoundourakis at low lvls it is almost a certainly that you'll hit what every your swinging at plus your damage is going to be way above average for about half the game and if they ended the story at around lvl 10 like most games then he would still be doing about 50 percent more damage on average and undoubtedly put his 2 Stat boost into feats or con so he ain't dieing quickly.
@@insidechaos4913 This is the point of D&D. The fighters are much stronger in fights at early levels and casters run support with heals and utility spells that help you solve puzzles. Casters become stronger in short bursts in the late game, but your fighter types keep the consistency when the chips are down. D&D isn't just about the combat and you shouldn't feel bad for being strong in it. If no one else is having fun it's because the DM isn't giving them enough stuff to do outside of combat.
One of my favorite moments in the series was in Orc Slayer, when they had to mine into a dwarf hold. I dunno, just Gotrek dual wielding pick axes “dig diggy hole”.
I think Cain is more like Gotrek but has Felix's personality. Apparently Cain is an amazing swordsman but can't really see it because he's too scared of what he's fighting.
It’s also a combination of him having imposter syndrome. He has the skill to land a blow on a space marine, one who says he has the skills of a master swordsman while watching him train alone. Sure the space marine wasn’t giving it his all but to land a blow on one that’s even halfway trying is a feat in of itself.
I mean remember that time he held of a full blown khorne blessed space marine in melee combat while calling them a pansy before skillfully disengaging so his allies could rip it apart with gunfire? Or when he took out an(admittedly injured) marine in close combat later in that same book?

Felix dies alone in a hole underground in the Old World, writing about how he wishes to see his family and friends again, before suffocating to death as he runs out of air. @@celarc99 he does not suffocate to death. It is kinda implied, but not shown exactly. And his last thoughts were that he heard some noises. Which also implied there are people digging him out.

On the topic of Malakai Makaisson. He made a tank I forgot its name, but it's Makaisson, take a guess what happened. He built an Ironclad called "Unsinkable" It sunk. He wanted to name "the spirit of Grugni" something similar. But everyone else went, "no, no no no no, name it something else, please, for our sake."
Me the time when i got a Dex AC of 20. And the DM didn't know magic existed. Then I ran so fast I ran though a room of cultists without being seen. Because I was moving that fast. Then i got one shot by the BBEG only to just decide dying is cringe and stand up with a nat20 on my death save. Later I one-shot said BBEG. With a critical backpack.

I would like to point out that TECHNICALLY Snorri did win one big battle and it was in one of the most pivitoal books. He also did it so damn funny that I was completely caught off guard.
I can say this is without a doubt of (some) of the best Dark fantasy written. I read all the books and I have to say they really make Felix believed and he comes off very senseable and really draws you in. I think the books are FAR better than the 40k stuff.

Though importantly he came back to life later while Nappa didn't, so he got to get even stronger (And was still strong enough to beat kid Goku really easily back in Dragon Ball before they decided to make friends)
@@Trynt33 To be fair he doesn't have much feats. He could held his own against a Cell Junior which is roughly about as strong as a Super Saiyan or a Goku with Kaioken 8x.
There is only one book dealing with the Skaven trying to conquer Nuln. It is the aptly named skavenslayer. Your confusion about the 3 books may stem from the fact the original troll slayer and skavenslayer books are collections of previously published short stories, so each “chapter” is actually a different short story
Honestly I got into warhammer through 40k, but I think I’ve ended up appreciating warhammer fantasy a lot more thanks to your videos. Now I’ve got a book series I wanna read so thanks for that.
I've been a fan of this series since a long time (around the time where the William King novels were still coming out), so I'm quite happy to see that the series is still being pikced up and enjoyed by other people. One charm point of the series was how it switched to other characters perspectives, even the villians, whic worked especially well for the skaven centered novels.
"Wait Gotrek! They have an Army!" "Good. I need to work up a thirst, come along Manling." "Snorri is coming too, can't let Gotrek die without buying me that ale he owes me." *Trio bumbles off and promptly lays into what was an army* *awed Imperial silence*

The very first mention of Snorri was part of flavour text following a battle report in a White Dwarf magazine. He killed a troll, which fell on and killed him. I'm so happy they made him a recurring, canon character and gave him such a wonderful story
I have only ever read one godric and Felix short story. it made me fall in love with flares. Seeing this angry dwarf to stubborn to die make his way through an entire chaos cult like a living blenders is one of the most badass things I've ever read.
Gonna give these a try. Your Caiphas Caine video got me into warhammer 40k (and man did I enjoy them, great rec!) so I'm hoping these will be just as good.
The thirsting of Zabbia for Felix in “Serpent Queen” is absolutely hilarious, especially given her “situation”. And on the topic of horny Tomb Queens, and this might just be me, but regardless, I swear that Khalida had similar thoughts as her, but unlike her herald, Khalida had an actual filter whenever she spoke or thought. Also you forgot to add two other characters to the main secondary characters… The first is Kat aka Katerina aka Felix’s future wife who wanted to go adventuring with Felix and Gotrek but Felix said no for obvious reasons. She actually saved Felix when they first met from a Khorne follower. The other being Otto Jaeger, the brother of Felix who got letters from Felix to “hold on to” until Felix returned to publish as a book, but in stead published them as a incredibly successful books series called “My Travels with Gotrek” mostly due to the sheer unbelievability of what they went through that (I think) it was believed that Felix was just making stuff up and *no one* thought it was actually true in the slightest.
I'm a major 40k fan but you got me into Gotrek and Felix. I'm reading it the same way you did and I'm loving these books and characters. Thanks for that. Also, Snorri and Malakai are some of my favorite characters ever.
I heavily recommend the audio books sadly only up to vampire slayer, the voice actor does them all justice especially the skaven you won't be disappointed.
These were some of the best novels I've ever read, nevermind just in the Fantasy universe. Just outright belly laughs. Everything about Warhammer Fantasy was wonderful, but these novels hold a loving place in my heart. They did so many good things for the world lol

In bloodbowl short stories they pop up and help a coach get his murdered player back to the arena wrapped up in a carpet. They don’t know there’s a dead guy in there until he starts leaking out
Been going through a bunch of your old vids and immediately got like, six of the Felix and Gotrek audiobooks after watching this. I read a random book in the series when I was a lot younger and never gave it a proper read.
Hey Pancreas, I'm back to say thank you for telling me about these wonderful characters. I started reading the novels a few days ago as my first Warhammer Fantasy books and I'm already halfway through book four.

Gotrek and Felix are actual adventurers simply put into WH Battle from WH Fantasy setting.
Series of books creates a good story arch and notes their adventures.

about the Powerplayer in the party thing, yeh it usually aint a problem in my group cuz we're all like that, but then the worse offender of them all got to be our DM and it was miserable, with fights so ridiculous that i actively avoided fights, in any other game my team can go from a fair fight to complete domination but when a Gotrek gets to be a DM it can get real ugly real fast.
I love how Felix slowly comes to understand that he is a hopeless adrenaline junkie who keeps travelling with Gotrek because he just fucking loves to fight impossible odds.
It's a common but satisfying thing in fiction when done correctly, like Rook from black lagoon for example, both Felix and him were woefully underprepared to deal with the things they ended up doing but they stayed around with their slayers because fuck if it wasn't the best trip they've ever had.
to bad its never really a plotpoint of much relivence. its only really talked about in felix’s musings. though i just finished zombieslayer, dont know if its a point latter on.

@@SwordWieldingDuck It isn't something he ever thinks out loud clearly, but by the time of Beast Slayer in Prague, Felix thinks to himself how he has adapted and now thrive at Gotreks side. He enjoys the trill of blade to blade combat and rarely seriously consider leaving or fleeing anymore.
I don't remember that at all aside him wondering if that's his reason he keeps on with Gotrek. By the time he rocks the cradle with Kat, he's been wanted to stop travelling and feels guilty for it. Felix was Gotrek's friend and Remember, but his prime goal in life was to get laid and settle down.
One of my favorite moments from the series is when Gotrek & Felix finally meet Thanquol on the Skaven submarine. Thanquol is all "my nemisisses, finally after X years, I will destroy you", and their reaction is just "who is this rat?".
lol yea bad ass scene. The classic Thanos "I dont even know you" trope
There's a good one where Felix meets Karl Franz who saves him from a solo duel with an Ork Warlord and Wyvern. Karl says it was the bravest thing he's ever seen, while Felix promptly faints.
I think Felix even asked if Gotrek knew who he was and Gotrek just went “they’re all Skaven, manling, I couldn’t tell you.”

In the end of the video, Pancreas goes over how Gotrek after he kept on killing so many demons during and after the end times, went on to search for Felix with the small chance he is alive. (Or a SCE, Basically a way to keep Old World Heroes alive even if they die)
I love the fact that Gotrex had a greater Hp pool than the entire setting he came from.

That rule about Gotrek's shoulder plate has flavour text saying "On his left shoulder - the side that was once protected by Felix Jager" and it's heart breaking

it's covered in the Realmgate series as well. Gotrek lost his left eye and is used to Felix fighting on his left to cover him. He noticed that he was being pushed on his left without anyone (Felix) there, so he armored up.

My favourite example of Dwarves being portrayed as alien comes from Demonslayer. There's a forgotten Dwarf Karak full of demons in the far North, where the handful of Dwarves left survive by hiding and using secret passages. When the heroes reach them, they plan their escape, but the planning gets slowed down by them trying to work out how much of their ancestral treasure they can bring with them and which parts to prioritise. Felix steps in and suggests that they're wasting time and should just go now, because surely their lives are more important than any amount of treasure? Every Dwarf in the room then proceeds to stare at him as if he'd grown a second head before deciding to ignore the insane Manling and going back to their discussion.
What did Gotrek say to make it seem like he wasn’t completely insane for traveling with this inept manling?
Gotrek and Felix stories are basically:
Felix: That is the most horrifying and grotesque *insert monster* I've ever seen. I'm surely going do die horribly now.
Gotrek: Brutally murders *insert monster* in whacky and comical way
LOL I wouldn't even say it "whacky or comical" at all, gotrek is far from funny. It's very grim book hell the frrst few books have them fighting a guy who was mutating babies and kids. Most of what he kills is often times in beyond brutal ways lol
Snorri thinks Snorri should get some credit young manling.
Also The Scaven end up doing some Looney Tunes-esque hi-jinks.
I would say a lot of the time gotrek is beaten and almost killed until Felix either backstabbed the enemy or helped figure a way out of it at a critical moment
My favourite Snorri line in the the book DragonSlayer is when they(Felix, Gotrek and Snorri) got back to Kislev, there was a Skaven invasion (guess led by who :P ).
Gotrek was like: "I think I heard a Rat Ogre or two. I call dips." and Snorri was like "But Snorri wanted to kill a big ratty too." which Felix responded with "You can have mine, Snorri" which made him smile and to which he answered with a big smile "Thank you, yoiung master Felix!"
That line made me crack XD
Yep. He has many moments that can bring a smile. The only thing that annoyed me was when he wouldn't carry Gotrek's axe because it was his weapon and Felix had to.

While being a wanted criminal in the Empire Felix is named "Friend of the Dwarfs" making him the second human after Sigmar to be granted that titel.
And the crazy slayer engineer used his parachutes to airdrop more slayers onto a chaos army from his armored and armed airship after it ran out of bombs while stating something along the line of "time to get serious"
"we've run out of bombs"
"Aye. Drop the slayer's"
Tbh I'd rather have have bombs dropping on me than pissed of suicidal drunk stunty bastards.

In older lore, it was pointed out that Gotrek and Felix fought Malus Darkblade and Malus was one of the only people to ever live through the encounter with the duo. Tz'Arkan was horrified and forbid Malus from ever meeting them again.

@@radekhomola7658 God this was around 20 or so years ago. In older editions of the tabletop you could also summon a squad of marines as chaos if you rolled double ones on a failed spell.

This is the only way 40k could ever have the end times. One pissed off stunty and his rediscovered manling pop out in 40k. Get found by a bunch of Orks in awe of his fightiness, then Gotrek kills every god in the setting ending with him dying while taking all 4 Chaos Gods out with him

For all the lore of barely mentioned places in the Warhammer world Gotrek and Felix are responsible for (Araby and Albion), I find it deeply hilarious that their time in Cathay is never elaborated on beyond "they couldn't find anything to finally kill Gotrek so they went home."

On this note, it is still super annoying to this day that we never got to read what G&F were actually doing in Araby, Ind, Khuresh, Cathay and Nippon, but rather the next novel starts just as they have returned from there.
@@vahlen5281 There was a short story about them heading east, it's included in the omnibus, where they fight a yeti (spelled yhetee). Otherwise the whole thing was just an excuse to have timeskip when the new author took over writing the novels. Would be fun if someone went back and expounded on those adventures now that Cathay actually has lore.

For every paragraph a quaff of ale, for every mention of the Dawivolk a quaff of ale, for every slain grobi or elgi filth a puff from the pipe. Every page to be read til it can be recounted from memory and then on to the next. For this is the way of the Eternal folk to our core, this is the way of the Karaz Ankor.
The whole point of the slayers vow is that it's a complete rejection of suicide. It's more like a sentence of execution, but you're allowed to fight back.
It's my favorite dwarf sub-theme because it is a fundamental rejection of suicide. They don't just go fight a monster that can kill them. They're soldiers who are sentenced to death, so they still try to be useful by fighting enemies they think they can beat. As they grow stronger they seek out stronger enemies

Basically, they don't value their lives like at all, but also want to make sure that they do the most with their lives as they possibly can.
Interesting piece of trivia for all Snorri fans out there: Snorri is actually dead in the lore. Way before Snorri got its character fleshed out (i.e. years before the book series), we got to read about his death in battle. It was in a short story included, I think, in the Empire`s 4th edition Army Book. Basically a huge battle develops between the imperials and orcs, the former being helped by a contingent of dwarf slayers, among whom Gotrek, Felix and another salyer called Snorri. At the end of the battle (it's the same battle in which Gotrek utters his now famous line-turned-Special-Rule: "Look Snorri, trolls!"), Felix finds Gotrek next to a recently dug grave, and Gotrek says (with a smile): "Here lies Snorri. He killed four trolls. The last one fell on top of him."
Thats the funniest doom, not the greatest. Clearly Grimnir had to will him back to life to fulfill his destiny.
@@GLevario12 I think they lampshade that in Giantslayer a bit by referring to it as like a possible outcome or it was some sort of vision or something, but it’s been a long time since I’ve read that passage so I might be missing something.
That story in in the Empire 4th Ed army book. At the time William King (the father of G&ze and if the modern WHFB lore) was in charge of the lore (see Mannfred vs G&F in the 4th Ed undead AB) and he wrote that story before G&F became a huge success and their earlier short stories were collected in Trollslayer and Skavenslayer. Later on (demon slayer) he introduced Snorri. The explanation is those are different time lines in which things developed differently

I like the low key nature of the novels. It adds to the badassery, but adds a tinge of tragedy that the only one who'll remember any of this, is most likely Felix's brother.
Or that most likely anything able to kill Gotrek will surely kill Felix right after therefore leaving the saga w/o a proper ending. The early books could easily seem to never get a chance to publish b4 we find out about Felix mailing them back to Otto.

The collection of stories about Gotrek and Felix fighting Thanquol’s forces, who Thanquol actively sabotages, takes place in one book, Skavenslayer. A good book, and a damned good entry for the series as a whole.
There is a later book, Manslayer (book 9), where they return to Nuln and have to stop another plot (Chaos, this time), with the epilogue signifying Thanquol's return to the series.

Man, as a Tomb King enjoyer I have to admit, Slayers are the best thing in fantasy. Having played a year-long WFRP campaign with a guy who took the slayer oath end-game, they are amazing. This dwarf was a master craftsman who fought with a huge gromril warhammer and in between slaying would forge sculptures of our adventures. Of course my Sigmarite priest was his best friend.
What made him take the slayer oath in the end?

The thing I liked about gotrej and Felix was that up until the later books it was implied they were just another set of heroes. They were a snapshot into the world rather than unique god entity
While I personally think they’ve always been a cut above the rest, you’re absolutely right. That short story where they meet another slayer and HIS remembrancer proves that they’re not even the only odd pair of Man and Dwarf wandering the world for the exact same reason they are.
They give the Warhammer world a whole lot of depth. Truth be told as awful as the End Times were, the Gotrek and Felix novels set during them do a great job of depicting what it’s like for someone who doesn’t have all the knowledge of prophecies and the Incarnates of Magic going through them - desperately trying to survive and always caught between planning for after the crisis is over while also acknowledging the fact that this time, there might not be a normal world (or indeed any world) to return to.
Ah yes, Felix Jaegar and his ever-growing harem of coffins

While im not really into gotrek and Felix, there was this story of where gotrek fought(and killed) an infernal guard. He later figures out that the infernal guard are pretty much chaos dwarf slayers, who wear armor instead of going ass naked. He later thinks to himself that while chaos dwarfs are corrupted, they are still dwarfs deep down.
The name of the story?

Thanquol for all the hilarity he brings, isn't someone to really take lightly. He is legitimately devious, and is one of the most powerful skaven mages around. In an attempt to capture that dwarven airship he not only halted it in it's tracks with his magic, he actually started reeling it in. Max upon witnessing this said to himself, " I dont wanna try dueling that guy." His ego does lead to his downfall, in fact one time when he had Gotrek and Felix captured, he was overjoyed to finally have his archnemesis at his mercy. He was flabbergasted to learn they not only had NO IDEA who he was they had zero inkling they had ever been constantly interfereing with his plans.
Never forget that he not only summoned SKARBRAND but lived to tell the tale. Fun fact: this incident is also a big part of why Queek despises grey seers.
and how he was putting out so much power bringing in the airship, it got the attention of the chaos mage twins.

@@owenkasaboski6902 Thanquol's Doom. It's the third book in the Thanquol trilogy (after Grey Seer and Temple Of The Serpent). The trilogy is set in the time-skip between the Gotrek & Felix books 7 and 8.
Max also lost to Thanquol before that happened, which means Thanquol is already strong without the warpstone cocaine and after the warpstone cocaine that rat is absolutely monstrous. Basically after the events from Daemon Slayer book the Skaven attacked the outpost in Kislev near the Chaos Wastes and everyone there is held in prison
"Felix...?" The great slayer says confused,hoping aganst hope. The stormcast removed his helm. Felix was silent. Tears began welling up in the dwarf.
"Damm bastard...where the hell were ye!?"

The 2 heroes united once again. And perhaps chaos got scared as...well.

I just love the idea of chaos gods looking at gotrek carving his way through their most elite soldiers like they're butter WHILST IN A PLACE THAT DOESNT FOLLOW THE RULES OF PHYSICS. . .

Am I the only one who feels bad for felix not being in AOS. It really pains me to see Felix's last moments in the old world was being trapped underground, writing how he only wished to see his family again as he runs out of air.
Part of me wants Gotrek to find Felix as a Stormcast but he has died so often that he doesn’t remember who he is. And Gotrek has to help his friend come back. Probably by going up to Nagash and kicking the shit out of the god of death until he gives back Felix’s soul.

Exactly what i wrote on a review. I got introduced to Warhamer trough Total war so its great to hear stories about the everyday people who live in Nuln, or the garrison of Karak eight peaks.

@@TheVergoner Hell if I remember right in one of the Realmslayer books it's implied Archaon actively avoided somewhere Gotrek was because he didn't want to chance it.

I made an OP character once, by accident. I'm not joking, I rolled well and made a Half-Orc fighter with 20 strength. I was given a +1 weapon (everyone got something special for their character) and eventually bought plate mail and a shield. The most notable thing to me was when we got assaulted by a demon whose CR was two levels beyond our party and I bodied it easily after about 3 rounds where the rest of the team did nothing to it. I showed up for one round, did half its HP and then killed it in the next round as it tried to flee. @@CharalamposKoundourakis at low lvls it is almost a certainly that you'll hit what every your swinging at plus your damage is going to be way above average for about half the game and if they ended the story at around lvl 10 like most games then he would still be doing about 50 percent more damage on average and undoubtedly put his 2 Stat boost into feats or con so he ain't dieing quickly.
@@insidechaos4913 This is the point of D&D. The fighters are much stronger in fights at early levels and casters run support with heals and utility spells that help you solve puzzles. Casters become stronger in short bursts in the late game, but your fighter types keep the consistency when the chips are down. D&D isn't just about the combat and you shouldn't feel bad for being strong in it. If no one else is having fun it's because the DM isn't giving them enough stuff to do outside of combat.

One of my favorite moments in the series was in Orc Slayer, when they had to mine into a dwarf hold. I dunno, just Gotrek dual wielding pick axes “dig diggy hole”.

Yeah AOS is such a larger scale setting that it sorta makes sense they don’t really have too much happening there
I think Cain is more like Gotrek but has Felix's personality. Apparently Cain is an amazing swordsman but can't really see it because he's too scared of what he's fighting.
It’s also a combination of him having imposter syndrome. He has the skill to land a blow on a space marine, one who says he has the skills of a master swordsman while watching him train alone. Sure the space marine wasn’t giving it his all but to land a blow on one that’s even halfway trying is a feat in of itself.
I mean remember that time he held of a full blown khorne blessed space marine in melee combat while calling them a pansy before skillfully disengaging so his allies could rip it apart with gunfire? Or when he took out an(admittedly injured) marine in close combat later in that same book?

Same I love to listen to these videos whilst playing games like total war where there is a lot of downtime between battles and helps to keep me calm with the comedy.

On the topic of Malakai Makaisson. He made a tank I forgot its name, but it's Makaisson, take a guess what happened. He built an Ironclad called "Unsinkable" It sunk. He wanted to name "the spirit of Grugni" something similar. But everyone else went, "no, no no no no, name it something else, please, for our sake."
Undestructible II I believe.
And that ship lasted 4 book appearances and a 20 year time skip before going up in smoke

Gotrek in AoS had a GODBEAST nope out of fighting him - of course he can take out a Primarch.
I would like to point out that TECHNICALLY Snorri did win one big battle and it was in one of the most pivitoal books. He also did it so damn funny that I was completely caught off guard.

One has to admire Felix for his dedication to a word given in a drunken stupor to a guy slaughtering a bunch of Empiral Knights.
I do like seeing felix go from: "Oh god we're gonna die!" To, "oh, here we go again."
I can say this is without a doubt of (some) of the best Dark fantasy written. I read all the books and I have to say they really make Felix believed and he comes off very senseable and really draws you in. I think the books are FAR better than the 40k stuff.
I've read the 1st 12 Slayer books 5 times. I felt like the story was just getting started by Zombie Slayer and needed at least another 6 books.

Though importantly he came back to life later while Nappa didn't, so he got to get even stronger (And was still strong enough to beat kid Goku really easily back in Dragon Ball before they decided to make friends)
@@Trynt33 To be fair he doesn't have much feats. He could held his own against a Cell Junior which is roughly about as strong as a Super Saiyan or a Goku with Kaioken 8x.
There is only one book dealing with the Skaven trying to conquer Nuln. It is the aptly named skavenslayer. Your confusion about the 3 books may stem from the fact the original troll slayer and skavenslayer books are collections of previously published short stories, so each “chapter” is actually a different short story

Honestly I got into warhammer through 40k, but I think I’ve ended up appreciating warhammer fantasy a lot more thanks to your videos. Now I’ve got a book series I wanna read so thanks for that.
I've been a fan of this series since a long time (around the time where the William King novels were still coming out), so I'm quite happy to see that the series is still being pikced up and enjoyed by other people. One charm point of the series was how it switched to other characters perspectives, even the villians, whic worked especially well for the skaven centered novels.
This is my go to book series if i want to immerse myself into the Old World

So hyped for that Thanquol video. Also this book got me to get back into the Gotrek books that I petered off on, just finished up Daemonslayer~ Now I have to get his model for my Fyreslayer army!
Daemon Slayer is still one of the greatest moments for both of them.
You did this to me. It was 40k novels only and then i looked into these two. The crusade continues in the old world. I honestly really enjoy the grim dark but without the difficult to imagine numbers. Plus the humor is pretty nice. Thank you my friend
One thing I love about Malikai is that he took the Slayer Oath so he could keep making stuff.
The very first mention of Snorri was part of flavour text following a battle report in a White Dwarf magazine. He killed a troll, which fell on and killed him. I'm so happy they made him a recurring, canon character and gave him such a wonderful story
I have only ever read one godric and Felix short story. it made me fall in love with flares. Seeing this angry dwarf to stubborn to die make his way through an entire chaos cult like a living blenders is one of the most badass things I've ever read.
Gonna give these a try. Your Caiphas Caine video got me into warhammer 40k (and man did I enjoy them, great rec!) so I'm hoping these will be just as good.
The thirsting of Zabbia for Felix in “Serpent Queen” is absolutely hilarious, especially given her “situation”. And on the topic of horny Tomb Queens, and this might just be me, but regardless, I swear that Khalida had similar thoughts as her, but unlike her herald, Khalida had an actual filter whenever she spoke or thought.
Also you forgot to add two other characters to the main secondary characters…
The first is Kat aka Katerina aka Felix’s future wife who wanted to go adventuring with Felix and Gotrek but Felix said no for obvious reasons. She actually saved Felix when they first met from a Khorne follower.
The other being Otto Jaeger, the brother of Felix who got letters from Felix to “hold on to” until Felix returned to publish as a book, but in stead published them as a incredibly successful books series called “My Travels with Gotrek” mostly due to the sheer unbelievability of what they went through that (I think) it was believed that Felix was just making stuff up and *no one* thought it was actually true in the slightest.
I'm a major 40k fan but you got me into Gotrek and Felix. I'm reading it the same way you did and I'm loving these books and characters. Thanks for that.
Also, Snorri and Malakai are some of my favorite characters ever.
I heavily recommend the audio books sadly only up to vampire slayer, the voice actor does them all justice especially the skaven you won't be disappointed.

These were some of the best novels I've ever read, nevermind just in the Fantasy universe. Just outright belly laughs. Everything about Warhammer Fantasy was wonderful, but these novels hold a loving place in my heart. They did so many good things for the world lol
