  • Well it has taken months of planning and building, but the Project Show-Off Axial SMT10 RC Monster Truck is finally complete. It actually wasn’t an easy finish to the project, Greg had to change up a few parts from his original plan and that extended the finish time of the build. Plus there were a lot of new cars that came into the shop that he had to concentrate on reviewing which pushed off the build even more. But it’s finally done and you’ll get to see the finished truck in this video and you get to see it running as well. However, not a ton of running. The Beast Broke! The goal to build the ultimate solid axle RC monster truck didn’t go as planned. Find out what went wrong with this build by watching the full video. Let us know what you would have done differently. Thanks for following the series!

Running spooled axles at either end is pretty savage on all components in a MT. Folks will run a locked rear end on slippery gravel, but on grass, no wonder it tore it's self apart. Running open diffs will also make it less tippy. I've been beating on basically stock SMT10 (builders) with full size J Concepts tires, cheap cast lower links and c' n knuckles with a 4600kv 4 pole 4x4 SCT motor and I've killed a stock servo saver. That's it.

Just beautiful. wow. I could look at that chassis all day long. Well done Greg, you killed it. I love bashing monster trucks, the Team Associated Rival has been my go to basher lately, the ability to adjust the truck is really nice.

Now you can appreciate why the LMT is such a good truck.
Everything is double shear. 17mm hexes to keep the wheels on and not strip the hexes and the servo saver helps the rod ends. The gear don't skip because they are beast.

I break my LMT every 2 battery packs on average. And when I upgrade one component, another fails... Sometimes sticking with plastics is the best idea.

Thank you for showing the durability issues. I built a custom SMT10 last year and had many of the same issues (and more!).

Oh man! Its always bummer when builds like that are a little less than you expect. I run those munitions and love them, but they don't like tons of power, they do round out easy. Everything else looks super nice! really awesome build. For your top links, can those fit on the inside of the chassis? it seems like that might put less torque on it? Sure is a nice one build though. I have really been debating on building a tube chassis based SMT10 or a plate chassis. Id really like a LMT but I think the pocket book says to stick with a platform I already have. lol. Maybe on our next online freestyle comp we can have you as a judge! have a great weekend and great job on the build!

most of the problems your having are because your diffs are locked, you can here it straining when your steering and it seems to roll over easy because of the locked diffs, unlock them and it will be a much better truck, you wont know yourself if you unlock them

i definitely think the wheel hexes are a big reason they strip wheels. they have a wedge at the end and i never have issues with the normal flat hexes. but with my smt10 i’m building right now i can’t test out the flat hexes

I didnt know how much diffrent my smt10 would be when I took out the lockers and put diff gears in. I stopped breaking so much stuff(axles, wheels, rod ends, and servos. I thought it was Just bad design for the longest time. Put diffs in with 50k fluid and its totally a diffrent truck

Fantastic build, well done. But i got into the vid and after 1 minute see you have the plastic axles still! i have the SMT10 and keep it only because i think its still the best scale looking MT but the durability of the standard parts is woeful! look at the axles wrong and they break : )

After looking back at this....maybe would have less in an LMT....and be more durable. As an smt10 owner myself(and spending over 1000$) I was also disappointed in the durability, even after upgrades. Had to put aluminum wheel adapters on so it would quit loosening the wheels, hardened axle shafts( they still bend), broken rod ends every time I run it, bent shocks, bent hardware, should have spent half as much for an LMT that's twice as fast, and more durable

Seems to be needing more heavy duty parts? Sometimes simplistic is better?
Metal looks cool, Sometimes it just doesn't work out well? But regardless of that, the amount of time and money putting together your own build justified your skills 💯, awesome build, even if it can't take our fingers abusive nature, lol
