The Last Word is one of my absolute all-time favorite cocktails. I like to make a slight variation, courtesy of the spectacular Old Crow bar in Zurich: shake it with a few leaves of fresh mint. It adds a subtle freshness that elevates the drink to another level!
I don’t really agree that the choice of gin is secondary; it needs a fairly assertive gin. I like it with Tanqueray Ten. But a gentler one like Bombay just makes for a “flat” flavor profile.

Black lily- fernet, Cointreau and lime juice
Hanky panky (credit Savoy Cocktail book)- gin, sweet vermouth, fernet
Dubodreau cocktail (credit Jamie Boudreau)- Bonded rye, dubonnet rouge, fernet, st germain
